Judges pick the finest swine at Killeen Junior Livestock Show Saturday, February 28, 2015 Clay Thorp | Herald staff writer
Some of Killeen’s finest sows were on display Friday at the Killeen Junior Livestock Show. More than 20 swine entered the contest, but only four are selected in each category for auction today at 1 p.m. at the Killeen Special Events Center, 3301 S. W.S. Young Drive. “We’ll have buyers here. They’ll auction them off and it’s whatever the buyer gets,” said Richard Tramp, one of the directors of the Junior Livestock Show Association. “Hopefully, we’ll have some buyers there not only for the pigs, but for the rabbits, chickens, steers, goats and lambs.” The Estes family has frequented the livestock show the last six years and took second and first place in the sow breeding category. Christina Estes, junior breeding grand champion winner said, “Her name is Marshawn Lynch. ... (The judge) said she looks like a beast because she’s all big and broody, so that’s her name, Marshawn Lynch” said. Christina said it’s hard work raising swine. “There’s washing them, you have to shear them about a week before the show, cutting their hair short to make them look good,” she

said. “Cleaning the pens — oh, gosh. We have 12 every year, so it’s a lot of work for us.” Christina’s father, Tony Estes, said raising the perfect pig is an art. “You want it to be muscular with a little

County reserve and grand, so everywhere they’ve taken those two pigs, they’ve won.” Estes said of his two daughters. “They’ve done real good with those two.” He said their family doesn’t show pigs for the money, but for the experience it gives his daughters. “Do they get their money back? Not always.” Estes said. “The students and the exhibitors, they do it mainly to learn responsibility and everything,” he said. “Hopefully, they break even, but sometimes they make a little money. If you’re in it for the money, you’re in it for the wrong reason.” Although it’s a happy day when a sow wins grand champion at a livestock show, it’s a bittersweet moment, knowing soon they will be on someone’s dinner table. “Each one has a personality. They’re fun to be with. It’s like having a friend, you actually develop a relationship,” Estes said. “The advice I would give, is don’t get too attached to them because they are raised for butchering, so you’re going to part with them some day. The first year my daughters got attached. They don’t do that anymore.”

Top steer brings $8,616 at Junior Livestock Auction Sunday, March 1, 2015 4:30 am JC Jones | Herald staff writer
Prize-winning animals were auctioned off Saturday at the 61st Annual Killeen Junior Livestock Show at the Killeen Special Events Center. The three-day event showcased nearly 200 entries, including rabbits, chickens, steer, turkey, goats, sheep and swine. Fifteen-year-old Reid Walinder took home the top honor for his grand champion market steer. The 1,436-pound animal sold for $8,616. It was the first year showing steer for the Ellison High School freshman, though as a 4-H member he has been involved with the livestock show since age 9. “I was happy,” he said. “I expected that I would do ok, but I didn’t have many expectations.” The steer was purchased by the First National Bank of Killeen; Heights Lumber & Supply, Inc.; Gary W. Purser Construction Co.; All American Chevrolet; H-E-B Killeen; Metroplex Hospital; First State Bank Central Texas; Terecia Schroeder; and Bill and Becky Bliton. Reid’s mom, Karen Walinder, said she’s proud of her son’s accomplishment.
“You get these steers back in like May, so it’s a long project,” she said. “He’s done really well. He’s worked with them hard and I’m very proud of him.” Showing animals is a family affair for the Walinders, as well as for many others who compete. “You’ll see a lot of people here - second, third, fourth generations of showing. You see the next generation and the next generation, so it’s fun,” she said. At a scholarship presentation before the auction, 17-year-old Sarah Parker received this year’s Killeen Junior Livestock Show first place scholarship, a $4,000 prize. Other grand champion winners included Jett Curb for his 93-pound meat goat; Kenzie Pardon for her 141-pound market lamb; Payton Aldrich for her 292-pound market swine; Marissa Knapp for her roaster, broilers and cockerels; Kylie Bliton for her fryer rabbits; and Samuel Jackson for his turkey. “We’ve had a great show. All the kids have been very successful. We’ve had great projects, and even better kids,” said Brent Bliton, president of the Killeen Junior Livestock Show Association. “Today is their chance to be rewarded for all of their hard work all year long.”

KISD students learn about farm animals from FFA members at Junior Livestock Show Friday, February 27, 2015 4:30 am Todd Martin | Special to the Herald
High school students taught kindergarteners Thursday at the Killeen Junior Livestock Show. High school juniors and seniors from the KISD Career Center paused in the middle of the local livestock show to spend much of the morning introducing agriculture to prekindergarten and kindergarten students. Groups of students from five Killeen Independent School District elementary schools matched up with high school agriculture students at the Killeen Special Events Center. They toured the center-turned-barn filled with cattle, swine, sheep, goats, rabbits and poultry. Some of the seasoned high school students, all members of FFA chapters, gave presentations about each variety of livestock on display at this week’s annual showcase, which ends at 1 p.m. Saturday with an auction. Senior Staci Bray, president of the Career Center FFA, and senior Jacob Warren, vice president of the chapter, said they welcomed the chance to share their interest with a younger crowd. “It’s fun,” Bray said. “A lot of these children don’t get to see this environment with goats and steers and pigs. For me, it’s exciting for them to see.” During presentations in front of an information board, Bray told students that goats don’t have teeth; they are always hungry and will gum on jackets, backpacks and anything else they might reach. Warren told students a steer could weigh

1,000 pounds, spend a whole day eating hay and drain enough water in a day to fill a bathtub. He also mentioned that milk, cheese and burgers all come from cattle. “I let them know about nutrition and what the different body parts are used for,” he said. Both proponents of FFA and livestock shows, Bray and Warren said the organization allows students to earn scholarships and learn about keeping animals healthy and managing costs. “They smile a lot,” Warren said of the children on tours. “They come in and see the animals and see what we get to do in high school.” Fifty-three high school Career Center students from veterinary, agriculture mechanics and horticulture classes served as tour guides for almost 500 children. “The annual tour provides a community service project,” said agriculture teacher Sarah Crawford. “This gives them a chance to apply what they’ve learned. At the stations, they talk about the specific species. They can be the teachers and leaders and apply their classroom experience.” Seniors Nicholle File and Kalopu Faalevao talked swine. They explained that pigs don’t sweat, but cool off in the mud. Students heard that sheep have poor eyesight but strong hearing, and ewes and lambs know each other’s distinct bleating sounds. Clear Creek Elementary pre-kindergarten teacher Maria Picacio said her students have studied a unit on farm animals.
Duncan Elementary School kindergarten students pet a goat Thursday, Feb. 26, 2015, as KISD Career Center senior Leeila Hanson holds the animal during a tour and lessons at the Killeen Special Events Center during the Killeen Junior Livestock Show.
“They get to see the animals and how they adapt to their environments,” she said. “They are seeing how we use animals, where we get eggs and milk. They ask a lot of questions.” Reid Walinder, 15, talks about his prize-winning grand champion steer at the 2015 Killeen Junior Livestock Show Auction, Killeen Special Events Center, 3301 S. W.S.
