indergarten students caught a whiff of the country Thursday while touring the Killeen Junior Livestock Show. In an annual service project, about 55 Killeen Independent School District Career Center FFA juniors and seniors escorted the younger children from Duncan, Clear Creek and Clifton Park elementary schools through pens of livestock. The children stopped at exhibits, and the high school agriculture students explained facts about cattle, sheep, goat, poultry and rabbits. They also walked past pens containing animals that awaited judging. The 62nd annual livestock show is ongoing through Saturday at the Killeen Special Events Center. A group of Duncan Elementary School kindergartners joined high school seniors Hayley Brooks and Akua Jackson in “the chicken dance.” They also learned that hens can lay as many as 300 eggs a year. “Today is special because the kids come and learn about the animals,” Brooks said. “A lot of them don’t have the opportunity to do that. It’s a pleasure to be able

to teach them.” Career Center agriculture teacher Sarah Crawford said the livestock show in Killeen is an ideal time for FFA high school students to serve younger children and to present information what they are passionate about. “They can talk about what they love and have knowledge about, and it gives them a chance to work on speaking

skills and patience,” Crawford said. All of the high school students involved in the service were also show exhibitors. While the 50-plus Career Center FFA chapter members organized and performed the service project for the children, there are more than 200 Killeen ISD high school students who are active in FFA at the four traditional high

schools and at the Career Center. About 14 classes of pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students cycled through the livestock show, touching sheep’s wool, gazing at young chicks and stroking a long-eared English lop rabbit. “I hope they understand there’s more to animals than those that live on the farm,” said Brooks, who shared with students various facts about turkeys and chickens. “We want to teach the students about livestock and show them how it all works,” said Career Center senior Tanner Dutton, explaining details about goats. “I definitely hope they leave here with more information about livestock.” ‘They love it’ Duncan Elementary kindergarten teacher Amy Shankel said she takes her students to the livestock show every year. “They love it,” she said. “They live in the city and we’re on Fort Hood. I love that students run it. It’s awesome. They love it, and it’s free.” Shankel said her kindergarten students would write about and draw pictures about their experiences while visiting the junior livestock show.
