From the Desk IT’S GETTING WARMER, AND THAT MEANS MORE EVENTS ARE HAPPENING!

So if you’ve been toiling away in the shed over the winter months doing maintenance or making upgrades on your Killer Ride, chances are you’ll be hanging for the days to get longer and warmer so you can idle your car out of the garage and out onto the blacktop to take in an event or two every weekend… As for the events themselves, there’s any number of different shows on offer in the overcrowded calendar. Sure, there’s still plenty of the usual one-day show and shines, but these seem to be overshadowed by the increasingly-popular Saturday night meets and Sunday morning Coffee and Cars events that seem to be popping up everywhere. These laid-back events allow car lovers to get there weekly fix, while still being able to enjoy their Sunday’s with family etc. They are a great addition to the social life of a modified car owner, but are they destroying the usual car-club based show and shines? I’ve touched on this subject before, but it seems the days are gone where people would put aside a full day to support a show and hang around to the end. Just like they would on a Sat night or Sunday morning catch-up, car owners are now staying just long enough to check out the cars, have a quick chat and then leave. Why not make this year the one where you support as many events as you can. Who knows, you may even get a photo of your ride in an upcoming issue! So when the sun is out, make sure you clean your car, grab the family and take in an event of two… See you on the street.

What’s Happening KILLER RIDES SHOW CAR INVITATIONAL AT SPRINGNATS AND BATHURST AUTOFEST!

Thanks to the team at Autofest, we have been offered space at both the Springnats in Shepparton (Nov 22-24) and Bathurst Autofest (March 7-8, 2020) to stage the Killer Rides Show Car Invitational – a show area for 20 special, high-end cars. At the Springnats, the area is indoors and air-conditioned (a bonus, trust me!) with space for 20 cars. This will be another feature of what I consider one of the best events in Australia. In Bathurst, there will be space for the Invitational inside the Pit Area Garages at the famous Mt Panorama. And here’s the clincher for those not sure – entry will be just $20 per vehicle! Yep, just $20 bucks! And, if you make the Top 10 come trophy time, you’ll get that $20 back in your pocket!

So, what are you waiting for, if you want to be part of the Killer Rides Invitational, better let us know now! Once the 20 spots are filled, that’s it… Email paul@killerrides.com.au now to express your interest.

What’s Happening PRO-STREET SUNDAY UPDATE

The been a fair bit of hype already surrounding the first Pro-Street Sunday event and for good reason. Seems everyone loves the look of a tough street car and is anxious to see a couple of hundred of them all together at one time! I have received many calls enquiring about whether this is a V8 only event, and of course the answer is a definite NO! A Pro-Street styled car is tough no matter what is powering it, so this event is open to any and all cars regardless of whether it has a rotor, four, six, V8, V10 or V12 – anything goes! As long as it conforms to the traditional Pro-Street style, you’re more than welcome to attend. For more information and to download an entry form, jump onto www.killerrides.com.au

What’s Happening NSW VS. VIC - THE BATTLE RAGES ON! Border Battle is a state of origin style cars show pitting VIC against NSW. Created to bring our diverse car community together to showcase as much of the subcultures as possible. We are using the unique former railway station “Junction Place” as the backdrop to the automotive show, but that’s not where the differences stop. Border battle will be run in the afternoon/evening from 2:30-8pm. This was decided to make use of the sunset though the archway and the lights, not only from above but in the pavement as well. There will be live music, vendors, food and of course hot cars! For more information leading up to this unique event, check out the Facebook page: facebook.com/VICvsNSW 14

PRO-STREET SUNDAY – BRING IT ON!

G’day Paul, After reading about the Pro-Street Sunday event you have planned, the boys and I are planning a road trip to Sydney to take it all in. I’m surprised no one has done this before. Having all that horsepower in one place is going to be awesome, can’t wait! Hope you get plenty of support for this one. See you there. Cheers, Jim and the Boys – Melbourne via Email Hi Paul, Hell yeah! The Pro-Street Sunday is going to go off. Everyone I know with a tough car is talking about it. Hope that venue has plenty of space as you’re going to need it. I’m “rallying the troops” now to get their entries sorted. Can’t wait to be in amongst all those killer rides! Thanks for keeping the tuff car scene alive and kicking. 16 Tony W – Via Messenger Hey Paul, Not since the early days of the Summernats have I been excited about going to an event. Pro-Street and everything associated with it is what I live for. Thank god we can now relive those glory days of tuff cars. Well done for keeping us horsepower junkies satisfied. Benny K – Via Email

Hey Guys, Yep, there’s no doubt the Pro-Street Sunday is going to be a big. I have been receiving lots of calls, emails and messages about the event. Remember, we are doing this to raise maney and awareness for Beyond Blue and Men’s Mental Health Care. Bring on March 22nd, 2020! Time to enter now guys!

GREEN WITH ENVY

Hi Paul, What a great issue of Killer Rides #16 is! I have to say, being a fan of Chevelle’s, I have loved that you’ve managed to find a few lately – especially the lime green one you featured in Issue 16. What a great car! The style, the stance and of course the colour. I absolutely love it. Keep them coming. Tyler T via Messenger Hi Tyler, Like you, I am a Chevelle fan so it’s a no brainer to run them when I find them – or they find me! There’s more coming, stay tuned…

TOO TOUGH!

Hi Paul, For me, there’s nothing tougher than a HQ Monaro given the full treatment. Your feature on HUMBLE was awesome and well deserving of being on the front cover. Even blown, it’s great to see that Layton drives the coupe as well – and isn’t that what owning a tough street is all about? Looking forward to each new Issue. John J Via Messenger Hi John, Yep, there’s a reason Layton’s HQ made the cover – it’s a classic Aussie muscle car that’s been given the typical Killer Rides makeover. Being a regular driver makes it outstanding too. Good things to come…

FULLY Charged

Like many Chargers, Nick Flanigan’s ’68 started is extensive rebuild as a well-worn driver that had seen much better days. Time had not been friendly to the aging coupe, but thanks to Nick’s passion and the obvious talent from the team at BMV Engineering, the days are no longer numbered on this special Dodge.

The 1968 Dodge Charger is one of the most sought-after muscle cars of the late sixties. In standard form, they are sensational. Add some late-model performance technology and the big American coupe becomes unbelievably cool!

Gen 3 Hemi 6.2-litre - 707hp 8-speed auto It’s obvious the shell has had plenty of love lavished on it when you see the rolling body in bare steel. The team have handmade lots of body parts including the reshaped bonnet and lowering the sill panels by 30mm to get a better seating position inside. At the time of doing this feature, the dash was being fabricated before the guys moved onto shaving the drip rails for a cleaner look. Both quarter panels were replaced with new items and eventually there will be flush mount glass and CNC-billet door handles, fuel 21 filler, exhaust tips and side mirrors. At this stage, the final colour will remain a closely guarded secret.

Accuair Suspension features on every corner and not only offers a better ride, but a more impressive ride height depending on whether Nick is cruising or parked. Big brakes will provide ample stopping power and are visible through the big-diametre rims.

Nick wanted to go with a Hemi, and decided to power his Charger with the mother of all Gen-3 Hemi’s – the 6.2-litre, 707-horsepower Hellcat version.

While the bare chassis is impressive, it’s the driveline that makes this Charger’s frame even more appealing. Nick wanted to go with a Hemi, and decided to power his Charger with the mother of all Gen-3 Hemi’s – the 6.2-litre, 707-horsepower Hellcat version. Anyone that has driven the factory supercharged Hellcat (whether be it in a Grand Cherokee Jeep or Challenger) will attest to just how big of a punch these engines pack. Mike Tyson wouldn’t stand a chance.

LORENZO CAPOGNA - 1972 XA FAIRMONT

WORDS / PICS / VIDEO – Paul Beck

GLORY s y a D

26

27

Back before hi-tech wizardry had entered the world of Street Machining, tough cars relied on cubic inches, twin carbs and tunnel ram manifolds!

When Lorenzo Capogna bought this numbers-matching XA Fairmont, the idea was to build a tough Pro-Street car that focussed entirely on reeling off low ET’s on the quarter mile. Whilst it was still going to resemble a street car, the main goal was to build a race car. Right through the build process, (which took some 13-years to complete!), Lorenzo rarely faulted from that original end goal. But the longer the process took, the more his attention turned towards keeping the car more street than strip. “The closer we got to completing the build, I changed my mind and decided the car was turning out too nice to race,” Lorenzo explained. “So now I just drive the hell out of it and it drives so nice!” That’s not to say the XA will never see any motorsport action, with Lorenzo already tackling the Cootamundra 400 sprints on the air-strip with a plan to have a go at the increasingly-popular Roll Racing – but just for some fun… Race Pic Supplied By

28

29

So why did the car take so long to complete? Lorenzo is a firm believer in doing things once and doing them right. That meant getting the right people on board from the outset and that not only means waiting for your spot in their workshop, but also having the necessary bucks to pay for their talents and workmanship. There’s a reason why the most successful workshops have long lines of car owners waiting.

On the dyno, the aspirated big-cube, small block produced an impressive 705hp with enough torque to fry those big Hoosier tyres.

Engine wise, there was just one team that Lorenzo had in mind – Trick & Mansweto Racing. Back when the boys occupied the same shop, they took the factory 351 from its original mounts and set about building a much tougher version the old school way. Known for their ability to extract huge power from aspirated engines, it was a no brainer for Lorenzo. There were stipulations though. Lorenzo wanted dual four-barrel carbs and tunnel ram intake. It’s obvious that Lorenzo got his way, with a Tristan Triccas-built, CNC sheet-metal tunnel ram intake manifold taking pride of place between the reworked heads and the matching pair of 750cfm Pro-System carbs that feed the fire below. Visually, the induction system is the hero part of this stout engine combo. But it’s what you can’t see that also impresses.

30

31

After the Scat crank and rod combo was added, the capacity increased to 393-inches...

Whilst Tristan was busy fabricating the intake, Jason set about piecing together the long engine. After the Scat crank and rod combo was added, the capacity increased to 393-inches with suitable pistons also joining the party at the same time. The cam is from the CamTech range and gives an idle that lets the world know this is one tough mother of an engine. Tristan gave the CHI alloy heads a thorough once over and bolted them into place in readiness for the induction. After the ICE ignition sparks the Premium 98 fuel, a pair of Pacemaker 4-into-1 headers dump the gases. On the dyno, the aspirated big-cube, small block produced an impressive 705hp with enough torque to fry those big Hoosier tyres.

Al’s Raceglides were entrusted to build a C4 auto capable of handling the 700-plus horsepower the XA was soon going to be packing. Al is well versed in building tough boxes to suit any application and used only top shelf components in Lorenzo’s C4. Fronted with a serious 6200rpm Dominator converter and using a Precision reversepattern shifter, the box has yet to give any sign of struggling with the job at hand. Continuing the tough theme through the driveline, Lorenzo sent the Fairmont to Pete Cleary at Pro Modifications to mini-tub it, add a roll-cage and also supply and fit a narrowed 9-inch diff fitted with 4.11-gears in the Tru-Trac centre with Strange 31-spline axles sending the power to the blacktop. Not one to leave anything to chance, Lorenzo upgraded the entire suspension using QA1 coil-overs to the front end and replacing the stock leaf springs with more suitable, stronger versions that have been moved inwards to accommodate the larger wheel and tyre combo. QA1 double-adjustable shocks offer a firmer ride on the rear. Caltrac’s were fitted to help cope with the power going to the rear end. Stopping the big Ford from any speed is left up to the tried and tested disc and drum combination that hide behind the 17x4.5-inch and 15x12-inch Weld V-Series rims wrapped in M/T 17x26 and Hoosier 12.5x29x15 rubber giving the XA that traditional Pro-Street look.

Inside, the theme switches between tough street car and restored Fairmont.

32

33

Inside, the theme switches between tough street car and restored Fairmont. The factory seats have been retained and have been retrimmed by Dave at Bad Ass Trimming. Likewise, the seat belts and dash were refurbished and slotted back into the original spots adding some authenticity to the build. In stark contrast to the stock appointments, Lorenzo added a host of AutoMeter gauges along with the full ANDRA-spec cage, cool Precision shifter and a few necessary switches for the pumps, fans and of course, the start button. Who uses a key these days? The boot didn’t escape a makeover either with the alloy fuel cell dominating much of the available space left over after the wheel tubs and cage were in place along with the fuel system and battery. Visually, the XA has come a long way from when Lorenzo found it in the Trading Post in 2003 as a two-owner, nicely-kept original Fairmont sedan. Thanks to the team at TM Smash, namely Albert, Dom and Jason, the one-time family sedan now resembles a much tougher XA GT with a new coat of PPG-mixed Ford Racing Red with the usual GT-black outs, guard flutes and bonnet scoops.

The end result is a tough street car that has a look that will never go out of fashion. It’s a perfect example of having a goal in mind and sticking to that plan. When asked if he would do anything different if he was to do the build again, Lorenzo simply stated, “I can honestly say I don’t have one bad memory of working on this car – either by myself or with mates, it was an enjoyable time with great memories made and the first drive was one of the most satisfying days of my life. As far as I am concerned, the car turned out perfect and there’s nothing I would do different!” Enough said…

Right through the build process, (which took some 13-years to complete!), Lorenzo rarely faulted from that original end goal.

34

35

Massive tanks go to my good mates George and Stef – they both helped immensely during the build. Dom and the team at TM Smash. Jason Mansweto. Tristan Triccas. Atillio. Daryl, and anyone else who helped out!

Moparfest, Canada’s Largest All Mopar event celebrated its 40th Birthday this year and the organisers decided to invite thousands of their mates to come along and party at the biggest Mopar event yet!

36

The annual get-together, or as the case was this year, the 40th Birthday Bash lasted for two big days and nights, taking over the New Hamburg Showgrounds in Ontario to party in true Mopar style, with vehicles on display ranging from the 1920’s right through to the most current models. Car owners travelled from across Canada and the USA to attend this huge event.

The event was founded in 1979 by the members of the Old Chryslers Corporation Auto Club (OCC Auto Club) which established itself as a non-profit organisation with a love of all Mopar vehicles. 40-years later, it’s still the same deal. Initially starting as a 40 display of members cars only, the event was then opened up to include other Mopar owners rides and from that point quickly grew into a two-day program that has been expanding ever since. GOING FOR

MICK SAPIENZA – HQ GTS MONARO

WORDS / PICS / VIDEO – PAUL BECK

D L GO

50

51

After selling his beloved HQ sedan for a short stint behind the wheel of a 4WD, Mick Sapienza went looking for a suitable replacement – and found more than he bargained for.

Many years of looking for a HQ simply ended in disappointment for Mick. Time and time again, the thought of finding that elusive project just didn’t eventuate. A family and mortgage soon took up much of the available cash that Mick had hoped would have secured his dream car. By this stage, Mick had just about given up until a four-door GTS came up for sale in Canberra. With his best mate and partners loaded into the car, the crew was headed for the Nation’s capital with hopes that this was to be the one. Sadly, once again, this was not the case, with the HQ sporting a different colour on every panel – and those panels were in bad shape, just like the interior.

Whether it was the anger from being duded yet again, or the disappointment of not going home with the HQ, Mick managed to get lost in the maze which make up Canberra’s streets. Normally, he would be cursing and swearing, but before he got to that stage, the wrong turn had taken them directly to this HQ Monaro, sitting under a willow tree. A short conversation with the owner resulted in a negotiated price and the deal was done. It turns out it wasn’t a wasted trip after all. With the Coupe back home on the South Coast, Mick cleaned up the new acquisition and drove it around for a couple of years before the decision was made to give the GTS a complete makeover. It was game on whether he realised it or not. “I never wanted to build an all-out show car!” Mick explained. “ I just wanted a nice street car that I could drive to events and have fun with.” It’s obvious that Mick’s version of a nice street car is actually a show-worthy, yet streetable cruiser. Check out the build quality. There’s no wonder that his “street car” has won quite a few awards at some of the country’s biggest events including Street Elite Best Interior at MotorEx, Top Interior, Top Coupe, Top Paint and Top 10 in the Street Class at the Red Centre Nats and Top Interior, 2nd Coupe and Summernats 2019 Street Champion to name just a few!

52

53

As far as colour combinations go, there’s not much about this Monaro that is typical. Take the body colour for example, Mick didn’t want to go down the road most travelled and apply a coat or two of red, black or orange.

As far as colour combinations go, there’s not much about this Monaro that is typical. Take the body colour for example, Mick didn’t want to go down the road most travelled and apply a coat or two of red, black or orange. He was going to paint it the original colour Gold, but instead opened up the PPG catalogue and was immediately drawn towards a custom Gold pearl. But before the colour could be added to the sheet metal, the shell needed plenty of hours spent on it to get it ready for colour, with just the removal of the door mirrors and factory aerial the only deviations from the Holden spec-sheet. Josh at Huskisson Smash Repairs got the nod to lay on the colour showcasing just how straight the original aging body had become. The choice of colour certainly makes this GTS Monaro a standout amongst others.

Mick also bucked the current trend when it came time to repower the Monaro. Instead of going down the LS-road, Mick decided to build his own 350-cube, 2-bolt small block Chev. 54

55

The interior may not be to everyone’s liking, but that’s OK with Mick. In fact, the Strawberry leather is a far cry from what Mick had intended – a full retrim in the factory style hounds tooth material, but was talked out of it by Matt at Inside Rides who expertly trimmed the Monaro into a show winning stunner. In stark contrast to the body colour, the leather covers the original seats that have been padded and patterned to take them to a whole new level. It also continues across the factory dash panel and through the boot area. And just to add that little piece of distinction, Matt stitched in a little Crocodile skin into each seat and trim panel. The same material was used to surround the Hurst shifter in the custom centre console. The dash itself still retains the factory dials that Mick painstakingly refurbished himself. A substantial sound system, comprising of Rockford Fosgate and Pioneer components provide ample cruising tunes…

Mick also bucked the current trend when it came time to repower the Monaro. Instead of going down the LS-road, Mick decided to build his own 350-cube 2-bolt small block Chev after Croft Engineering handled the machine work. Using an old-school cast-iron block, Mick added a standard crank swinging Scat H-beam rods and forged Speed-Pro pistons. The cam is a custom grind from Watson Racing and gives the 350 a menacing idle. A pair of World Sportsman cast heads were soon to join in the block but not before being ported and polished and fitted with Manley stainless valves and Competition springs. Manipulated by Super Flow Heads, these have been taken out about as far as they can, making plenty of power. Filling the gap between the heads is an Edelbrock Victor Junior intake holding a single Pro-Form, Race Series 750cfm double pumper carb. A complete MSD ignition system has been fitted and lights the fire in the small blocks belly. The gases are then sent on their way via a pair of four-into-one headers that flow into a twin, three-inch system.

THANKS TO: Inside Rides. Phil Kerjean Fuelworx. On Point Electrical. PB Smash Repairs. Garth Kanzen Detailing and Nathan from Fireball Coatings. Thanks to all for your assistance getting the car to where it is now.

Whilst Mick could have added any gearbox to the back of the 430hp small block, he decided to stick to just four gears with another old-school choice – a Muncie four-speed box. Built to handle big horsepower applications, the Muncie box easily deals with the job at hand. And before you assume anything, no there’s not a nine-inch diff sitting under the Monaro’s bum. Instead, Mick kept it all Holden by keeping the limited-slip Salisbury 10-bolt diff in place. 56

57

And before you assume anything, no there’s not a nine-inch diff sitting under the Monaro’s bum. Instead, Mick kept it all Holden by keeping the limited-slip Salisbury 10-bolt diff in Keeping in the muscle car theme, Mick added wheels that mimic the style of the day with the black centred Foose Legends measuring a modest 17x7 and 18x8. Hiding in behind the wheels are Wilwood disc and calipers with 320mm rotors on the front and rear. Four piston calipers are also added to each corner. The ride height has been dropped by 2.5-inches in the front and 2-inches at the back thanks to Pedders springs and Sports Ryder shocks.

58

59

It’s taken Mick around 10-years to complete the project with family and other necessities taking precedent over the car build. As it sits, Mick’s hands-on approach has kept the budget spent on the car to under $60,000 – a figure that he could probably double if he wanted to part company with the GTS any time soon. Mick’s plans for the future all circle around having fun in the car with the family in tow. He’ll return to the Summernats and do some local shows, but he is more looking forward to cruising the car when the time allows. And isn’t that what it’s all about?

Walking from the carpark to the entry gates leading onto the oval, you could easily tell this was a big event. Everything from 48-215’s to the last of the V8 Commodores had found a position on the oval.

With 400 entrant stickers ready to go, the organisers actually ran out! Not a bad position to be in…

63

The very first row of cars set the standard as far as I was concerned. The event’s major sponsor, Reflection Detailing & Coatings had a big line up of tough cars in front of their stand, kicking off with the mega-tough ONIT LX Torana that continued down the line with the UNFAZD HZ Holden (blown big block), a couple of blown VK Commodore’s and finishing off with Shannon Longhurst’s stunning blown, injected LX Torana Hatchback.

With clear blue skies overhead, it was always going to be a big showing of cars on display with entrants travelling from all over the ACT and NSW.

Blowers and turbo’s were everywhere – usually attached to the late model Commodore brigade, but there were several other 6/71-blown rides in attendance including the brilliant candy Pink HQ Tonner slung low over a set of big billet rollers.

64

65

Street Cars mixed it with show cars, burnout cars, resto’s and rarities – plus there were even a few Variety Bash cars in attendance offering a different point of view for those that attend car shows regularly. By far, the biggest group on display at the show were the SS Owners Club with what seemed like a never-ending supply of Commodores. This club is making a huge name for itself by attending many events in bug numbers, showing their support for the scene. Other clubs on display during the day included the ACT Street Machine Club, ACT Munro Club, ACT Torana Owners Club and the FX-FJ and FE-HR Clubs that helped out on the day.

66

67

Though it’s held in NSW, the ACT All Holden Day has proved its success by gaining more entrants and more spectators in through the gates year on year. At this rate, the 2020 event will be bigger again…

CREATING A

MONSTER

After owning a mix of street cars including a couple of Torana hatchbacks, a VK Brock and even a Gemini and RX4 Mazda, Rick decided the time was right to jump behind the wheel of yet another Torana. This time though, his requirements were a little more specific. This time he wanted a four-door in either Opaline or Atlantis Blue that was still original in appearance. Nothing like being picky… So, before you think that Rick had little or no chance of finding his ultimate Torana, up pops Matt McDonald who just happened to own an up-spec, Opaline Blue V8 / 4-speed LX Torana sedan and as luck would have it, was looking to move it on. Fate bought the two guys together and a bunch of cash saw the Torana move from Matt’s garage to Ricks. The rest they say, is history…

Rick Conway took a mild, factory 253/4-speed LX Torana and turned it into a blown LSX-powered tyre destroyer!

72

73

RICK CONWAY - LX TORANA

WORDS / PICS / VIDEO – PAUL BECK

The Opaline colour is a Factory Holden hue and one that isn’t commonly seen on Torana’s. The original owner not only specified the body colour when placing the order back in 1977, he also requested an SL/R-spec dash and the unique coloured interior covering the SL/R seats. It all makes for one very special factory car that Rick had big plans for. Those plans didn’t involve too many modifications to the pristine body and paint other than to remove a chunk of bonnet metal to let the intended induction system room to breathe. Apart from that, the most obvious change is the fitting of the satin Auto-Drag Centerline wheels measuring 15x8.5 and 15x3.5-inches.

The original owner not only specified the body colour when placing the order back in 1977, he also requested an SL/R-spec dash and the unique coloured interior covering the SL/R seats.

74

75

Likewise, the SL/R-inspired interior has been largely left untouched from when it left the Holden showroom floor. The swap from manual to auto necessitated a new shifter, so Rick opted to remove the centre console to make room for the B&M Pro-Bandit shifter that now occupies the same space. Two AutoMeter warning lights are mounted to the steering column just rear of the SL/R steering wheel and beside the temperature gauge from the same company.

76

There’s no way the factory fitted 253-cube engine was going to cut it, so Rick combined with Troy from Warspeed to build a tough 376ci LSX small block. The GM crate engine is tough in aspirated form, but when you combine an 8/71 blower and twin 750HP Holley carbs, it becomes a 77 monster just waiting to extract hell on the rear tyres!

The engine relies on a forged rotating system, alloy heads, MSD ignition system and custom Boosted Fabrication headers (that flow into a dual 3-inch system that dumps the gases with ease) to handle the 524hp and 900ft lbs of torque the pumped small block now produces. Cleaning up the overall look of the engine bay was enhanced by fitting the coil packs to the glovebox area along with the MSD ignition system. The fuel cell and Aeromotive Stealth pump live inside of the otherwise empty boot area and supplies plenty of 98-octane pump fuel. Asked if he would do anything different next time, Rick replied “I wouldn’t go with the LSX, I would go with a big block Chev.”

Asked if he would do anything different next time, Rick replied “I wouldn’t go with the LSX, I would go with a big block Chev.”

78

79

Steve from Shift Right built the Powerglide box that is fronted by an SDE blower-spec converter providing neck-snapping launches when Rick smashes the loud pedal. Making sure that grunt gets to the tyres is left up to a narrowed, bullet-proof 9-inch diff that houses a Strange carrier, Tru-Trak centre and billet axles. The entire driveline swap was done in Ricks home garage and wouldn’t have happened so quickly if it wasn’t for mates Paul Fazzolarri and John Spinks. The underside is pretty basic compared to some. Standard height Lovells springs and Monroe shocks are fitted to the front end, whilst the rear has boxed control arms, Super Low Lovells springs and matching shocks offering a tough street stance. The braking system is a little more complex with ventilated Holden discs working with twin-spot AU-series 2 calipers on the front, while the rear relies on WB Holden drums. A VT Commodore supplied the master cylinder whilst a Wilwood brake bias control keeps the balance right.

Whilst the Torana fought Rick through the entire build process, those problems encountered are now distant memories since Rick started enjoying the Torana and the power it produces. So where to from here? Rick really has no interest in collecting trophies and finds that driving to events and having those Holley carbs wide-open much more fun. Along with plenty of street driving, Rick has plans for Summernats, Powercruise and Autofest fun along with a possible trip to Drag Week. You’ll know its Rick – he’ll be the one with the grin from ear to ear driving the only Torana of this colour there…

AMERICAN MUSCLE CAR SHOW - TOWRADGI BEACH HOTEL - SEPT 15TH 2019

WORDS / PICS -PAUL BECK

GETTING Your Muscle On Each year, the American Muscle Car Club take over the carpark at the Towradgi Beach Hotel on the outskirts of Wollongong for a show and shine. Thankfully the sun was shining almost as much as the cars and bikes on display!

82

83

Being held by an American Car based club, didn’t stop the odd Australian-built car from entering and joining in the festivities...

Wollongong is a hot bed of custom cars, bikes and some of the best cruising roads in the country. Ideally located on the NSW South Coast alongside pristine beaches, it’s a favourite destination for those wanted to show off their pride and joy. So it’s no wonder this event is as popular as it is – and only getting more popular each year.

84

85

Officially, the venue opens to the car owners about 9am, but by that time, the car park was overflowing forcing some car owners to park in the general parking area. Bikes were relocated onto footpaths and the many traders and food outlets made do with wherever they could find the space.

Walking through the show revealed all kinds of cool US steel including early Caddies, lots of Mustangs and Camaros, a sprinkling of Dodge Chargers and Challengers, some mid 50’s Chev’s and even a mildly-modified Buick Riviera!

Being held by an American Car based club, didn’t stop the odd Australian-built 86 car from entering and joining in the festivities, and only added to the already huge variety of vehicles on show. And that’s the beauty of this event, it never fails to provide an eclectic mix of cars, bikes and of course, people!

87

Walking through the show revealed all kinds of cool US steel including early Caddies, lots of Mustangs and Camaros, a sprinkling of Dodge Chargers and Challengers, some mid 50’s Chev’s and even a mildly-modified Buick Riviera! For those that like the Aussie stock instead, you weren’t disappointed with some tough Falcon’s, early Holden’s, a sweet blown HK Monaro and lots of XM/XP Falcon’s! And then there were the mass of bikes – mainly Harley’s, that rolled into the venue to check out the show.

ROB BRIGHT_1967 CHEV NOVA SS

WORDS / PICS / VIDEO – Paul Beck

RETRO Remake After building a tough, old school Torana, Rob Bright decided the time had come to build some US muscle mixed with some latemodel technology.

92

93

Although Rob loved his 308-powered LC GTR Torana, an offer was made on the car that was too good to refuse. All of a sudden, the dream of owning a Nova was soon to become a reality. With an empty shed and a pocket full of cash, the search began for a suitable SS Nova. “After an extensive search on eBay USA, I ended up finding this car for sale in Australia!” Rob said. Isn’t it always the way. The find saved Rob not only a considerable amount of time and money, but it also saved the hassles sometimes associated with buying a car from the other side of the world. Sometimes, you just get lucky…

As Rob puts is, the car was in average shape when he swapped some of the accrued cash from the sale of the Torana. But Rob has been down this road before and there’s no way it was going to stay average for too long… Being a muscle car from the 60’s, there’s a fair chance this Nova may have seen some street racing action over the years – even if it’s was just some quick runs between the lights on a Saturday night. Whatever the case, the body and paint was showing plenty of use and Rob being somewhat picky when it comes to the finish of his cars, knew he needed to rectify the body and paint situation.

94

95

The first stop was to see mate Glenn Burns at C-Us-First Smash Repairs where a plan was put into place to smooth out all of the rough edges and then lay on a new coat or two of PPG’s True Red, a colour that suits the Nova’s body lines perfectly. After plenty of time massaging the panels back into shape, the newly applied paint showed off just how great the body had turned out. The final result is so good in fact, Rob took home the Super Smooth Body and Paint award at the Summernats that year. For the record, except for the inclusion of the reverse cowl bonnet, there’s been no body mods made– it’s pure 1967 SS Nova.

The interior is a mix of old school muscle and tough street car. Like most factory muscle car interiors of the time, the original SS seats seats and door trims are covered in basic black vinyl, with black carpet used under96 foot. Updating the 60’s theme is a B&M Pro-Bandit shifter, Billet steering wheel and a couple of more accurate AutoMeter gauges monitoring the temperature and oil pressure. Rob also installed a stereo comprising of Kenwood and Pioneer components.

The interior is a mix of old school muscle and tough street car. Updating the 60’s theme is a B&M Pro-Bandit shifter, Billet steering wheel and a couple of more accurate AutoMeter gauges monitoring the temperature and oil pressure. Rob also installed a stereo comprising of Kenwood and Pioneer components. The carby-fed engine is long gone. Rob’s a firm believer in driving his cars anywhere at any time, so the Nova needed to be not just streetable, but reliable too. Whilst a cranky big block or pumped small block would have been great, the driveability would have suffered. That’s why there is now a more-or-less standard issue LS-1 bolted between the front chassis rails. Making a credible 310hp at the tyres with a MAFless tune, the LS-1 combo features forged pistons, a Walpro 255 fuel pump and a pair of Sanderson headers that flows into a dual 2.5-inch system incorporating Magnaflow mufflers. The rest is just how the factory workshop manual lists. With the colour-coded engine covers, the LS transplant looks right at home in the Nova.

98

99

Ensuring that the highway miles are easily taken care of, Rob fitted a four-speed Turbo 700 auto to the LS but not before fitting a B&M 2400rpm converter. Down the back is a 3.5-geared 10-bolt rear end. The driveline works perfectly for what Rob required in his new ride. In fact, he cruised with the family to the Gold Coast for Cooly on the Rocks and the car performed effortlessly all the while turning heads everywhere. More recently, Rob has been driving the Nova to work each day whilst the daily driver had some work done to it. Mission accomplished…

GENERATION NEXT

Whilst Rob has been spending plenty of time on the Nova, there’s another project that has been slowly coming together in the garage. He’s been piecing together an LJ Torana that will eventually be his son’s. What started out as his work car, has been stripped down, repainted (9-years ago) in preparation for the 202-powerplant and reassembly. There’s no set time frame in mind as his son James is only 4 at the moment, so the pressure to finish it in time isn’t on at the moment. That time will come though…

100

Let’s face it, cars built in the 60’s weren’t known for their handling and braking capabilities. Rob fixed this by modifying the five-leaf rear springs, adding heavy-duty standard height coils to the front and fitting Nolathane bushes and Monroe Gas shocks to each corner. Camaro disc’s and calipers combine with the standard rear drums to provide the adequate braking power. Finishing off the chassis upgrades are a quartet of 17x7 American Racing Torque Thrust II wheels which suit the period of the car down to the ground…literally. Whilst Rob is more than happy with how the Nova has turned out, there are some changes he’d like to make in the future. The rear end will eventually sport bigger wheel tubs and get a four-link set-up with the wheels then being changed to 18’s and 20’s – giving the Nova yet another look altogether. Like Rob, we can’t wait for that to happen…

The carby-fed engine is long gone. Rob’s a firm believer in driving his cars anywhere at any time, so the Nova needed to be not just streetable, but reliable too.

THANKS TO;

103

Once described as the ultimate Automotive statement, the early series Cadillac’s were dream cars for the rich and famous.

104

Even in standard form, Cadillac’s built in the late 40’s through to the 60’s were wild in their design and commanded attention. So you can imagine just how cool a custom Cadillac is to own, cruise, show and even drag race! In this issue, we put modified Cadillac’s under the spot light.

105

Early Cadillac’s are an American Icon, widely regarded as the ultimate in American Car Culture - and that’s in standard form. Once customised, the mass of chrome and often candied colours make for a a vehcile with no equal!

106

All Cadillac’s are known for their over-sized panels, spacious interiors, big engines and huge array of over-the-top accessories and styling queues. When you think Cadillac, you think big! With that in mind, it hasn’t stopped car customisers from chopping, dropping and cutting up these luxuroius cruisers to build some of the finest show cars, wildest cruisers and most insane drag racing vehicles on the planet!

The ‘59 and ‘60 Cadillac’s seem to be the most popular of all models with many different variations being served up at shows and events around the globe.

107

108

Even though they are not as popular with some people, the ‘47-’58 Cadillac range lend themselves perfectly to car crafters. Also clad in excessive amounts of bright work and with body styles the could have been dreamed up by any customiser at the time, its little wonder that these cars are still commanding a huge price tag, no matter what the condition.

ANDREW KOMNACKI_1932 FORD COUPE

WORDS / PICS – Paul Beck

HIGHWAY

Hi-boy

110

111

Just because there’s a blown Hemi up front, doesn’t mean Andrew Komnacki’s ’32 Coupe doesn’t get to see many highway miles…

In fact, it couldn’t be further from the truth. Those with a keen eye would have already spotted the twin gas mixers that sit between the cool BDS scoop and the 6/71 Dyers blower that tops that oh-so-sweet big block Chrysler Hemi that fills the confines of the ’32 Ford engine bay perfectly. Andrew’s 354-cube Hemi is fed a strict diet of LPG for a reason, and that is because it was built to drive – anywhere at any time. Keeping the internal mods to a minimum for reliability, Andrew swapped out the cam for a more suitable Isky stick and added forged pistons to deal with the pressures of running a blower.

112

Let’s face it, a blown Hemi in a hot rod is more about the visuals than the horsepower it creates. Sure, it makes ample grunt, but for pure “wow” factor, there’s nothing more impressive that seeing those big cylinder heads topped with a chunk of polished alloy! If you know of anyone selling a Hemi, my number is listed in the magazine. Backing the big block is a Turbo 700, four-speed auto relieved from a wrecked VN V8 Commodore, with a 4.11-geared 9-inch diff rounding out the driveline trio.

113

When first built, some 15-years ago, it was a typical ‘32 with a blown small block Chev, turbo 400 auto and nine-inch.

This isn’t the first driveline to be slotted into the ’32 however. When first built, some 15-years ago, it was a typical build with a blown small block Chev, turbo 400 auto and nine-inch. And that was fine. But when Andrew started to notice just how cool the Hemi gear was, the first chance he had to have his own, he grabbed that opportunity with both hands and an open wallet. So why the LPG? Well Andrew built this 3-window coupe as a driver. He has attended events all over the country and driven the ’32 to every one of them – isn’t that half the fun? The most recent adventure was a trip to the Street Rod Nationals in Maryborough, north of Brisbane QLD. From his home in Canberra, that’s a drive of almost 1400klms each way! And he did that trip with a Caravan attached to the coupe. In fact, the very next day after the photo shoot, Andrew was once again attaching the Caravan and heading south to Temora for yet another Rod run. Obviously, Andrew’s a firm believer of you build them to use them…

Those with a keen eye would have already spotted the twin gas mixers that sit between the cool BDS scoop and the 6/71 Dyers blower that tops that oh-so-sweet big block Chrysler Hemi

114

115

When the coupe got painted – some 17-years ago, Andrew could have gone for any colour on the brand spanking new Deuce Custom body, but eventually decided upon a custom Magenta from the Debeer colour guide. Whilst Andrew laid on the colour to the chassis and door jambs, a favour from a mate saw the colour added to the body itself. Yes, there’s signs of wear and tear, but that’s to be expected when you’ve travelled more than 100,000-miles in all-weather conditions on some of the crappiest roads in the country. For Andrew, the signs of being used are like a badge of honour. Hot Rodders get it… The pinstriping adds that little something special to the overall colour and is the handiwork is Al Smith.

Swing one of those suicide doors open and the interior comes into full view – well at least those sporty seats do. Believe it or not, they were once serving duty in a Volvo XC70! Andrew did have other seats in place, but they weren’t the comfiest seats he’d ever sat in, and even after just a couple of hours behind the wheel, his back would be screaming “enough”! The Volvo seats are so comfortable, any distance cruise is now a breeze.

...old school VDO gauges take up occupancy in the dash panel, just behind the “swapmeet special” steering wheel...

The gauges are in tune with the period of which the car was put together with old school VDO gauges taking up occupancy in the dash panel, just behind the “swap meet special” steering wheel. The flamed door trims are a cool touch too! Gear selections are made via the B&M shifter.

116

117

118

The wheels of choice are American Racing Daisy measuring 15x7 on the front and a whopping 17x11 on the bum. In between the wheels is a chassis that has one purpose – to provide a safe and reliable ride that does everything right. The coil-overs at each corner and the Commodore steering works with the Rod-Tech stainless independent front end nicely whilst the triangulated 4-bar rear-end does the job required. Commodore discs and Ford drums handles the braking needs adequately.

So, after a 3-year build over 15-years ago, and more than 100,000-miles shared together, what’s next for Andrew? “It’s been on the road for more than 15-years now so maybe it’s time for a freshen up and maybe even a change of colour,” Andrew explained. Whatever changes Andrew has planned, one thing is for sure – that Hemi isn’t going anywhere! Stay tuned…
