From the Desk YOU OFTEN HEAR PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT THE GOOD OLD DAYS OF STREET MACHINING, BUT HOW GOOD WERE THEY? Having been lucky enough to have been a part of those days – late 80’s, early 90’s, I can tell you they were the best days to own a modified car. People weren’t afraid to think outside the square when building a new car, and it was very rare to see two cars similar at a show or cruise night. It was all about being outrageous in regards to colour, engine configuration and wheel size - back then it was about width, not height! The Pro-Street era bought about a whole new look for the scene. Insane powerplants, crazy paint schemes and race-themed interiors. Again, everyone was out to better what 02 others were doing.

It was all about being outrageous in regards to colour, engine configuration and wheel size back then it was about width, not height! I understand that times change, rego rules get more intense and the authorities now frown upon anything that even looks different to what they expect. It’s a damn shame, but that’s life I guess. If you ever want to see how it was back then, jump onto Facebook and head to Australian Street Machine History – 1970-95. That page will give you a great insight to what we were lucky to experience. It may never happen again, but at least we have those memories that people are happy to share… See you on the street.

HEMI UNDER GLASS TO RETURN

One of the most iconic exhibition cars of all time has to be the Hemi Under Glass. Based on the Plymouth Barracuda, the wheel-standing, rear-engine coupe was originally built to test parts for the Hurst company. Its wowed crowds all over the US and Europe during the 60’s and early 70’s. The last car built, in 1968, is still putting on occasional shows. But plans are now in place to build a new Hemi Under Glass using the 1000hp Hellephant engine package in a new Generation Challenger. If the rumours coming from Mopar are true and there’s a Barracuda coming soon, then that’s the platform that will be used. Whichever way the project goes, it will be great to see the new Hemi Under Glass wheelstanding the quarter-mile again…

What’s Happening SO YOU THINK YOU CAN’T CRUISE A BLOWN ENGINE LONG DISTANCES?

Someone forgot to tell Peter Chronis, who cruised his Issue 10 cover car, the 700hp, blown Clevo XBGT Falcon from his home in Sydney’s northern beaches area to Adelaide for the GT Nationals and back. It performed effortlessly and used 461.61 litres of fuel to travel 3000klms. That’s just a little over 15-litres per hundred klms! On top of that, he had the Top Modified XB GT trophy riding shot gun on the way home!

KILLER CONTENT

Hi Paul and Team, Just wanted to say how much I have been enjoying Killer Rides magazine. The feature cars always impress and your event coverage is great – especially when showing smaller events that wouldn’t usually get a look in. Please keep them coming. I also read with interest your thoughts on the Aussie-style Power Tour! How good would that be! I hope you can get helpers to bring that to reality. Can’t wait to see what Killer Rides has in store for the future. Best of luck. Aaron R - Via Email HI Aaron, Thanks for supporting Killer Rides mate. I go to a lot of hassle picking the cars to feature in Killer Rides so I’m glad they are well liked. An Aussie-style Power Tour would be the ultimate road trip. Not sure how many car owners 10 it would attract, but it definitely would be fun! Stay tuned…

MOBILE PHONE FRIENDLY

Hi Paul, Whilst I enjoy reading Killer Rides on my iMac and iPad, lately I have tried using it on my iPhone, and I have to say I don’t like it. Can you streamline the look of the mag to make it more user-friendly? I really only check out the story to get basic engine specs, the colour and not much else. I prefer looking at the pics to get ideas for my HK wagon build. Apart from that small gripe, I love what you’re sending us each month. Thanks. Steven J – Via Messenger G’day Steven, It’s interesting that the majority of Killer Rides readers, turn to their phones to read the magazine each month and this is the second such message I have received. I have been on my phone to look at the magazine and know where you’re coming from, so from this issue onwards, I’ve tweaked the design to make it more appealing to those who read the mag on their travels. Don’t forget to send in some pics of the wagon to show us where you’re at. Cheers.

LETS HIT THE ROAD

G’day Paul, Mate, where do I sign up for the “Killer Rides Power Tour”? I’d be more than happy to use up a week’s worth of holidays to be a part of it. Just say the word and me and the boys will be there! Travis - Via Messenger Hi Travis, You are one of a heap of people that contacted me about doing a mega-cruise. You have to understand the massive undertaking this would take to make happen and a group of enthusiastic people willing to give up their time to put into staging the event. Never say never though…

PRO STREET TO THE FRONT

Hey Paul, That cover last month is the best! I am addicted to ProStreet and each car on that cover screamed Pro-Street! Absolutely awesome mate! Keep showing the others how it’s done. Pro-Street and Killer Rides Rule! Allan H via Messenger G’day Allan, I have to say, I do like the last cover too. It’s totally different to the previous 10 covers and being a Pro-Street tragic as well, I reckon its cool! Look out for more of this type of stuff in future Issues. Cheers.

UPDATE ON CONDITIONAL REGISTRATION SCHEME IN NSW

Many of you in NSW are likely to have one or more of their vehicles on Historic or Classic Plates and are probably unaware of a recent change to the registration process that the RMS and Service for NSW have introduced about a month ago, with no notice and no consultation I must add. The change is that the “Historic Vehicle Declaration” and the “Classic Vehicle Declaration” can no longer be emailed to your Club for endorsement as they are required to be originals, RMS and Service for NSW will reject any document that appears to be a copy. There was no official information released by RMS when these changes we made so we are in the dark as to why such a change was made? ANSMA has now reached a size that was unexpected when it was created by Graham Stubbs (RIP) back in 1985. We now have over 100 Affiliated Clubs across Australia and inexcess of 2,500 Individual member and growing. This growth is our strength in dealing with the Government over registration issues with our members vehicles but it is also a legacy to the foresight of Graham Stubbs when he started the Association!

CHEVY NOVA

Dare to be Different

This Chevy Nova features a hand-built, full custom interior from the four bucket seats to the custom dash that flows into the full-length centre console. It’s a sure fire way to impress everyone who sticks their head in to check out the trim. The dash keeps an oval theme with the gauges, switch panel and air-con vents. Utilising the body colour with the trim colour brings the outside of the car, inside.

INSPIRATIONAL

s r o i r e t In

Whilst the engine bay is what many consider to be the most important part of a cars build, there’s no denying you’ll be spending most of your time inside the car, so why not make your interior something special as well. Here’s a few to get you motivated…

16

1951 FORD TWIN-SPINNER

The street-racer theme is evident inside this ProTouring early Ford sedan. The low-back seats with harness belts, the bulky gauge panels, wood-rimmed steering wheel and intricate shifter design makes this interior a standout.

1956 CHEV CONVERTIBLE

The classic Chev era (55/56/57) had a classy interior from the factory but when given the street machine treatment, it can become spectacular. The owner of this ’56 Convertible opted for the popular four-seater arrangement and covered the whole lot in red leather. Combined with colour-coded dash and alloy components, this Chev is way cool…

1971 HQ HOLDEN MONARO

And now for something completely different! This build was done by a custom car painter, so it makes sense to see plenty of painted steel inside this pro-street Monaro. As well as the full steel, custom dash and painted trans tunnel, the door trims (as well as the floor panels and headlining) have been given an unusual treatment by grinding on steel panels then a light coat of candy paint. A great effect. The seats and steering wheel ring are covered in Croc skin. You want different? Here it is…

17

Dare to be Different

1969 DATSUN 1200

In standard form, the Datsun 1200 is probably one of the most boring cars in the world. This Pro-Street version is anything In stark contrast to the Aust. Camaro but, with a turbo SR20, tubs and slick paint. And an interior featured, this US-built example’s that screams “look at me”! Using a combination of leather, insides is hardly recognisable thanks to the fitment material and painted steel, this Datsun is all class. of the late model dash assembly, restyled door trims and centre console and steering wheel. Covered in a combination of greys, this could very well be a brand new Camaro’s interior…

1969 CAMARO

1969 CAMARO 18

No colour contrasts a silky black exterior better than bright red, and this Aussie-built Camaro does it perfectly. Again, going for a four-seat set-up, the interior uses lots of aluminium pieces to compliment the red leather including in the custom centre console.

1964 EH HOLDEN WAGON

When your brother is a top notch trimmer, you’d be crazy not to let him loose on your new show car build. Check out the shape of those seats! It’s hard to believe that they were the original EH seats that have been reshaped! The complete interior, whilst being full custom, features an original style pattern in white leather. The seat belts are retractable into the seats for a great effect.

Coming Attractions

It seems like an eternity since Brian Davitt and I made the trip to Traralgon in Victoria with an empty trailer and returned with what will eventually be the Killer Rides Project Road Rage. Those of you who know me, know I love cars that are different and I just have a thing for Bullet Nose Studebakers. My previous Stude, when I published Extreme Magazine was originally built to go Drag Racing, and therefore, we went too far and couldn’t get rego without changing 90% of that car. I just couldn’t do it.

22

23

Readers have been asking whats happening with the Killer Rides Project Road Rage - my 1951 Studebaker. Truth is, not much. But the plans are in place...

All these years later, I was alerted to a ‘one-family’ 51 Studebaker and after a quick phone call, decided this was my new, street-driven project. With a head full of ideas, the plan was to start on it straight away, but as is usually the case with life, other things have gotten in its way and not much has happened in recent times.

Putting together Killer Rides each month, and now Super Rod every 3 months, doesn’t leave a lot of time to spend on the Stude. My weekends are taken up with car shows and photo shoots and occasionally, some family time! So getting into the garage to do anything constructive is limited for me at the moment. I have however been purchasing some bits and pieces in preparation for the build. I managed to source a 2008 Gen 3 Hemi engine that will one day sit between the chassis rails, and if all goes to plan, with feature more cubes than it does now and will be topped with an 8/71 blower and EFI Hilborn Shotgun injector hat. I have already purchased the Kilduff Lightning Rods shifter and have a quartet of VE Commodore bucket seats that will form the basis for the trick interior. The dash will be a custom made deal and will be void of everything but one set of gauges mounted in a way you’ve probably never seen before...

24

There will be nothing subtle about Project Road Rage. The planned paint scheme will be in your face as will the interior and driveline package. At this stage, the Stude will be rolling on some 15-inch wheels in trus Pro-Street style. Though this time I will be making sure the build is done legally and by the book. Once completed, I would like nothing more than to cruise Project Road Rage to events all over the country. Issue 10 cover car owner Peter Chronis has proved you can cruise a 700-plus horsepower blown street car long distances and I want to back that feat up by doing the same. There will be nothing subtle about Project Road Rage. The planned paint scheme will be in your face as will the interior and driveline package. To me, building a car completely different to what other people are doing, is what its all about. Whether you love it or hate it doesnt really concern me. Fact is, you will notice it and you will be talking about it. Stay tuned...

26

Anthony Starcic has always liked Torana Hatchbacks. Now he owns one of the toughest!

ANTHONY STARCIC – 1978 LX TORANA HATCHBACK WORDS / PICS / VIDEO – Paul Beck

Anthony purchased the run-down LX Hatch in Sydney, that was just begging to be saved. Not one for factory faithful resto’s, Anthony quickly put the plans in motion to turn his new project into a tyre-melting Pro-Streeter. Forget building an A9X replica – that was never going to happen. Bolt-in flares and spoilers weren’t on Anthony’s to do list. What topped that list was a big engine, big blower and big injector hat! 28

29

It was at this stage that he spoke to Aaron and Steve at APM in Narellan about building a tough, pumped, small block Chev. The guys are responsible for building some of the wildest engine combo’s on the street and strip, and their combined knowledge and skill ensured Anthony’s Torana lived up to expectations.

Although it’s a small block in size, its cubic capacity is more what you’d expect from a big block. With the right crank and rod combo, this small block now boasts a capacity of 434ci.

Although it’s a small block in size, its cubic capacity is more what you’d expect from a big block. With the right crank and rod combo, this small block now boasts a capacity of 434ci. Whilst Anthony didn’t want to divulge too much about the Chev’s inner-workings, there’s no hiding the black-anodized Blower Shop 6/71 supercharger and equally as impressive, Big and Ugly mechanical fuel-injection hat sitting way above the bonnet line for all to see. Anthony wanted a power plant that could keep a smile on his face whilst torturing the big Mickey Thompson rear tyres. Nowhere was this more evident that at the Sydney Powercruise, where Anthony put every last one of those 1200-plus ponies through the smoking tyres on the main straight during the “Powerskid” competition.

30

31

Anthony purchased the run-down LX Hatch in Sydney, that was just begging to be saved. Not one for factory faithful resto’s, Anthony quickly put the plans in motion to turn his new project into a tyre-melting Pro-Streeter.

32

A tough engine relies on a tough driveline to get the power down to the tyres. No problems here with a purpose-built 2-speed Powerglide backing the blown small block that transfers the grunt to the narrowed nine-inch diff. And after all that fun happens, a quartet of Commodore disc brakes provide the stopping power thanks to the Wilwood master cylinder. Those brakes are hidden behind the front V-series Weld Wheels and the much wider, bead-lock Welds on the rear.

And when the blown small block tries to turn the Torana inside out, there’s a full roll-cage to combat that problem.

33

Already impressed with the Torana’s lines, Anthony knew the hatchback body was going to stay just how the general intended the SS to be. With that said, all badges except the grille “SS” have been removed with the sheet metal copping a couple of coats of white with the black bonnet and window trim by the team at Tony’s Prestige Smash Repairs after their talented body guys got the panels free of any dents, rust and imperfections. The result is one tough looking Hatch.

As you’d expect, the insides are practical. The factory-appointed bucket seats are long gone. In their place sits a pair of Kirkey race seats with Harness belts to keep Anthony and a game passenger strapped in tight. From the drivers position, the MOMO steering wheel, AutoMeter gauges and TCI shifter come into play. And when the blown small block tries to turn the Torana inside out, there’s a full roll-cage to combat that problem. Oh, and the engine doubles as the sound system too – and it only plays one tune all day, every day! 34

HOLDEN NATIONALS – HEATHCOTE RACEWAY - APRIL 6, 2019 PICS – Lauren Jade @ Xposed Photography WORDS – Paul Beck

BURNIN’ UP THE

BLACKTOP

After a more than successful 2018 event, the Holden Nationals returned to Heathcote Raceway and exceeded everyone’ expectations yet again! In 2018, the Holden Nationals bought together some of the toughest, quickest and wildest Holden-powered vehicles in the country. 12 months later, they are back to do it again. This time, tougher, quicker and wilder! Take a bow Todd Foley. You and your helpers have outdone yourselves with the 2019 Holden Nationals. People don’t know how much work is involved in staging an event like this. Countless hours on the phone, dealing with entrants requests, chasing sponsorship and making sure everything runs how it should. It can be a thankless job, but when it comes together like it did this year, you know that people attending – both 36 racer and spectator alike, appreciated your combined efforts. Don’t believe me? Check out Facebook! Its notorious for people to have a whinge, but it’s all praise for this event…

37

38

The Holden Nationals has proven to have built up quite a reputation, with drivers travelling from as far afield as South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland to be part of the field and mix it with the “local Victorian contingent of tough Holden-powered rides.

39

It’s no surprise the limited amount of entry spots filled quickly (in just one week!), ensuring plenty of hardcore racing from the first pass to the last. Of the four classes on offer, the Outlaw bracket attracted the most entries followed by Holden N/A and LS-Boosted, with Holden Boosted just behind them. 177 cars in total made the final cut.

40

As expected, the event attracted a great crowd who enjoyed the hard-fought racing under clear blue skies, making this the most successful Holden Nationals yet.

ROY ROMEO – 1970 FORD CAPRI WORDS / PICS / VIDEO – Paul Beck

WAIT

They say good things come to those who wait. But a 15-year wait? Roy Romeo is just happy this Capri is finally in his garage… 50

51

Sometimes, the right car comes along at the wrong time. That’s how this Capri and Roy first met. 15-years ago, the owner wanted to part company with it, and although Roy desperately wanted to make it his, the dollars were just out of his reach at the time. But as fate would have it, Roys mate ended up buying it and when he decided to move it one, there was only one phone call he had to make. There was no way Roy was missing out on it for a second time… The beauty of this Capri is that it is fully engineered and legal with the 355ci Chev engine, Powerglide and 9-inch diff, the mini-tubs, roll-cage and chassis connectors. That alone sealed the deal for Roy. Though the Capri was essentially like this at the time of purchase, he has made some changes to make the car his own and also enhance the cars appeal. Externally, the Capri still sports the same shade of blue – a Ford Fiesta colour that was added by Anthony Caronna Bodyworks. Roy has changed the bonnet though as the previous owner fitted a scoop, but Roy prefers the reverse cowl – I tend to agree with him on that one! The other change came with a new set of wheels. Previously wearing Weld Draglites, Roy did consider following the current trend of black-centred wheels, but opted for these ultra-cool full polished V-Series Welds measuring 15x10 and 15x4 – the rears having been fitted with bead-locks for that true Pro-Street look.

52

Open either door and you’re greeted with acres of Tan leather covering the Recaro front seats, modified rear bench seat, custom dash, door trims and the 6-point roll-cage. The dash is overflowing with AutoMeter gauges on a polished alloy facia and keeps Roy informed of what’s happening in the Capri’s most vital areas. A MOMO steering wheel and B&M shifter complete the racecar-themed interior. The boot reveals the size of the tubs, a big (for a Capri) fuel cell and two batteries. You may be able to squeeze lunch in there if you’re a light eater…

53

Sometimes, the right car comes along at the wrong time. That’s how this Capri and Roy first met. 15-years ago, the owner wanted to part company with it, and although Roy desperately wanted to make it his, the dollars were just out of his reach at the time.

History shows that the Capri has been fitted with all kinds of engines of the years. Turbo 6-packs, Big blocks, small blocks, Ford, Chev and even at twin-turbo Lexus V8! For a small car, it’s almost like the Ford engineers were daring people to add bigger engines by the way they shaped the engine bay. Roy’s version sports a 400-plus horsepower, 355ci small block Chev that he built at his In Touch Automotive workshop. Starting with an ‘010’ block, Roy added a Scat crank and rod combo, JE pistons, Mellings oil pump and a cam that is big enough to make driving the Capri on the street enjoyable. A pair of Dart Sportsman heads were filled with good gear and bolted on to the bottom end before the gap between them was filled with a Victor Junior intake. Instead of going the usual route and bolting on a Holley carb, Roy went all hi-tech and fitted a Holley Sniper EFI throttle body. Driving the Capri in any condition is now so much nicer. Bolted up to the street-smart Chev is a trans-braked Powerglide auto that uses a TCE high-stall converter to launch the Capri from a standing start. The severely-narrowed 9-inch diff houses 3.7-gears and is just right with the tall Mickey Thompson tyres for regular street use. 54

55

Though the Capri is set up to terrorise the quartermile, Roy would rather keep this one a tough street car. When the urge to race comes along, he has a low 8-second Commodore to satisfy his needs.

Pro-Street cars aren’t set up to go around corners at warp speed, so it’s no surprise to see a somewhat basic suspension set-up utilised in the Capri. The front end scored a set of SCF Race Cars custom struts and Wilwood disc brakes and calipers whilst the rear kept the leaf springs in place along with Drum brakes. An XY Falcon master cylinder supplies ample stopping power.

Though the Capri is set up to terrorise the quarter-mile, Roy would rather keep this one a tough street car. When the urge to race comes along, he has a low 8-second Commodore to satisfy his needs. Now he has the best of both worlds. When the time away from work allows, Roy and his family like nothing better than jumping into the Capri and hitting the road to a cruise night or event somewhere in Sydney. The joys of owning a street-legal, tough as nails Pro-Street car. And it only took 15-years to make it his own‌

MOTOR t n e m e t Exci

There’s no denying that since moving to Melbourne fulltime and having new owners take control, the Meguiar’s MotorEx event has easily become Australia’s biggest show of its type.

OK, call me old, but I remember when MotorEx was just a simple, two-day indoor car show in Sydney that occupied a small section of space at the end of the Sydney Showgrounds expansive hall. Back then, there was no Super Star series, Unveilings or elaborate presentations – just a simple car show held indoors that tried to relive the days of the Sydney Hot Rod Show – which Andy and Donna Minas have successfully done all these years later.

MEGUIAR’S MOTOREX MELBOURNE SHOWGROUNDS – MAY 11&12, 2019 WORDS – PAUL BECK PICS – CHAD SILVEY

Its inside that you’ll also see the Meguiar’s Showcar Superstars, the Inaugurations and the best of the best cars set up to show off their quality.

Fast forward to 2019 and the word MotorEx conjures images of pristine Show Cars, multiple new-build unveils, hundreds of street cars on display outside and many more undercover, along with a multitude of national and now international traders, sponsors and supporters. For sheer size alone, it is without equal.

Taking up much of the available space at Melbourne Showgrounds, the Meguiar’s MotorEx utilises several indoor area’s to showcase the upper-end of the car entrant list as well as trade stands displaying just about everything you need to build a car! Its inside that you’ll also see the Meguiar’s Showcar Superstars, the Inaugurations and the best of the best cars set up to show off their quality. It really was a festival of colour and horsepower. Outside, there’s more happening to satisfy the senses. Drifting, high-flying Freestyle moto-x, dyno challenges and of course the hugely popular Real Street display of cars. There’s been a concerted effort in recent times to include SEMA into the MotorEx program and that was achieved successfully this year with many SEMA-affiliated companies making the trek from the US to promote their products and companies to Australian enthusiasts – a move that will no doubt increase as years go by. It’s a great thing that MotorEx goes for two-days because at the rate this event is expanding, there’s no way you’ll be able to take it all in during one visit…

66

This year saw the wettest bump-in on record. Lots of rain fell during the set up period, but that did little to dampen the enthusiasm of those displaying their cars, products or services. The rain was more like an interruption that a deal-breaker. Thankfully, Saturday’s weather improved considerably and instead of the wet stuff, there was a downpouring of people making their way into the venue to check out the hundreds of cars on display, the huge amount of trade support and entertainment designed to keep even the youngest visitor happy.

67

Saturday saw the Inaugurations take place with many new cars and bikes unveiled for the very first time to much applause and admiration. Some trade stands also had cars uncovered such as the new ProFab Radial Mustang that took centre stage on the Speed-Pro stand. The naming of the Super Six also took place later on Saturday.

SUPERSTARS

GRAND MASTER

68

With all Superstar Qualifiers together under one roof, the awarding of the Grand Master award was always going to be a hard one to chose. But, after the judges had done their thing, it was the Johnny Z’s built, 1938 Fordson Van dubbed “Speedbox” that took the highest honour on offer. Built over an 8-year period, and featuring more body modifications that Hollywood A-listers, the 69 Van has been wowing crowds at shows since its debut and was a deserving winner of the Superstars Grand Master Trophy!

Two days after the event and I am already hearing people fast-tracking their builds to be a part of the 2020 show.

With Sunday being Mother’s Day, you would have expected numbers through the gate to be down a little, but that wasn’t the case. Each day was as busy as the other and by the time the event closed its doors on Sunday evening, there had been around 30,000 people attend the venue to take in in excess of 900 cars and some 300 businesses that combined to make this the biggest and best MotorEx yet.

70

71

With figures like that under its belt, the future of MotorEx looks blindingly bright. Two days after the event and I am already hearing people fasttracking their builds to be a part of the 2020 show. Which, by the way, is scheduled to take place over the weekend of May 16th and 17th. Keep an eye on the MotorEx website for entry details as they become available. www.motorex.com.au

BRIAN DAVITT – 1971 HQ HOLDEN WORDS / PICS / VIDEO – Paul Beck

73

72

With white walls, hub caps and venetian blind in place, this HQ looks like a full granny-spec resto! Or so it would seem…

Whilst this HQ looks like a nicely restored stocker that sits a little lower than normal, don’t be fooled by its sedate looks. If the number plates didn’t give you a hint that there is something not-so-stock living under the bonnet, then the rumble coming from the dual big-bore exhaust should! Brian Davitt, along with his super-talent brother Steve, set out to build a tough HQ that didn’t scream out attention like a balls-out Pro-Street version would, but performed just as well. And although there’s a 700hp, 500ci alloy-headed big block providing the power, you’d never know with the bonnet down. This HQ was found locally on the side of the road for just $1500. With both Brian and Steve being HQ fans, they couldn’t get their cash out fast enough. Back then it was pale green with a white roof and that’s the way it stayed for many of years before an unwanted incident involving the front of a 4WD and the rear of the HQ had the boys thinking of a 75 colour change. When the HQ next emerged, it was sporting its new colour scheme.

74

It’s amazing just how much appeal this HQ has. Seems everyone loves the Sleeper-style build – including Brian!

Steve put in a huge amount of work on the HQ for his brother, making sure the body was straight and the paint was silky smooth. For that, Brian will be forever grateful.

Originally a 253 / Trimatic car, it didn’t take long for Brian to up the ante somewhat. What started as a basic 454, ended up with 500ci of alloy-headed goodness including an LS6 intake, 850dp Barry Grant Demon carb, Comp belt drive and super-tough internals. Backing the engine is a suitably-built manualised Turbo 400 auto, with a nine-inch copping the punishment in the rear. Whilst more than happy with how the big block performs, Brian did mention he has a couple of turbo’s and EFI in the home garage that just might make an appearance one day. I already feel sorry for those little white wall tyres…

700HP

76

500ci BIG BLOCK CHEV Yes, this is the same car! This burnout pic were taken at the Moruya South Coast Nationals when the event was held at the Speedway in August 2005. Never one to shy away from giving the HQ a hard time (either in the burnouts or Drag Racing), Brian flexed the big block’s muscle regularly. At this comp, Brian smoked the HQ into second place overall! At the drags, the Kingswood has run a best of 11.16@127mph!

77

Although he has those two power-adders sitting at home, Brian really is enjoying driving the HQ too much to take it off the road to fit them. One day… Maybe…

Before the colour change, Brian’s HQ sported all brown interior trim. Brian initially looked at replacing the factory bucket seats with a bench seat, but couldn’t come to grips with the column shifts on offer. The change of colour however didn’t suit the old trim and Steve had these Hounds-tooth covered seats in the workshop that weren’t getting used, so in they went to the freshly painted Kingswood. A quartet of black door trims and dash pad soon followed and gave the HQ insides a fresh look. Like the exterior, the inside remains faithful to what the Holden designers had specified – right down to the factory dash, steering wheel and shifter. Just to push home the factory-spec build, Brian added a Venetian Blind!

78

79

What started as a basic 454, ended up with 500ci of alloy-headed goodness including an LS6 intake, 850dp Barry Grant Demon carb, Comp belt drive and super-tough internals.

Before the latest rebuild, and when sporting the green paint, the only non-factory appointment to the exterior was a chunk of metal missing from the bonnet to allow the air-cleaner to hang through. Although a necessity due to the intake manifold used, Brian never did like the fact that it couldn’t fit under the bonnet. That was fixed before the new colour was added and in doing so, put the exterior back to how Holden had intended. For the record, the colours now adorning the super-straight panels are Sunburst Gold with straight White tinter on the roof.

It’s amazing just how much appeal this HQ has. Seems everyone loves the Sleeper-style build – including Brian! And although he has those two power-adders sitting at home, Brian really is enjoying driving the HQ too much to take it off the road to fit them. One day… Maybe…

BROTHERLY LOVE

Brian and Steve were like two pea’s in a pod. Both brothers were heavily into cars being raised in a car-friendly family. Their Dad’s HQ SS was the catalyst for their passion for the model and between them, they have owned, modified, cut up and sold off more HQ’s than they dare to remember. Steve’s passing was hard on the family, and especially Brian who not only shared Steve’s love of cars, they did car stuff together. This HQ is a lasting legacy of great times the pair spent together. The Davitt family is one of the closet-knit families I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Proof that the family that plays together, stays together. RIP Steve, you are sorely missed by us all.

HOLIDAY

All roads led to Narrandera over Easter where a certain Bunny took a back seat to 400-plus Hot Rods and Customs for the annual Rod Run! Every Easter, the small country town of Narrandera (99klms west of Wagga Wagga) overflows with all kinds of Hot Rods and Custom cars. The motels are booked out, the restaurants are putting on extra staff and the town braces itself for four days of reliving everything the Hot Rodding lifestyle has to offer. And with 400-plus entries making the 82 pilgrimage to the event, this year was to be one of the biggest the town has hosted in its 35-year history!

83

Officially kicking off on Good Friday with cruising at the Lake Talbot Caravan Park and a Lady’s Luncheon, the laid back events set the mood for the following couple of days.

The streets of Ganmain were alive with hundreds of people walking the town checking out the cool rides and old shops.

Saturday saw the entrants assemble at the Golf club before heading to nearby Ganmain for an impromptu show ‘n’ shine along the historic town’s picturesque main street. The 45klm trip from Narrandera to Ganmain saw lots of entrants cruise together is a massive ‘conga-line’ of rods and customs. The streets of Ganmain were alive with hundreds of people walking the town checking out the cool rides and old shops – looking for that elusive old collectable… 85

...with 400-plus entries making the pilgrimage to the event, this year was to be one of the biggest the town has hosted in its 35-year history!

Back in Narrandera, all the side streets running of East street were blocked off in readiness for the Saturday night cruise along the main street – without doubt, one of the highlights of this great event. With both sides of the street lined with spectators, multiple food outlets, bands and kids rides - the added attractions providing the perfect backdrop for the cruise night. From 5pm to 10pm, East Street was street rod central!

Every Easter, the small country town of Narrandera (99klms west of Wagga Wagga) overflows with all kinds of Hot Rods and Custom cars.

With the possibility of rain coming, the Show ‘n’ Shine took place under overcast skies, keeping the heat down compared to the previous two days. By mid morning, Marie Bashir Park was overflowing with hundreds of stock and modified cars that complimented the Hot Rods and Customs entered into the event. Amongst the usual mix of Hot Rodded coupes, roadsters and sedans were some unique vehicles including an some cool, low-slung mid 50’s cruisers, a group of wild Rat Rods and even a few 69/70 Cadillac’s! That’s the beauty of Hot Rodding. Everyone has a different idea of what is considered cool.

89

88

As well as many trade stands onsite (including Super Rod), the show ‘n’ shine incorporated a swap meet, a pop-up fair ground and annual Narrandera markets, ensuring a huge crowd hung around all day. With the presentation over, the end of yet another successful Narrandera Rod Run had come. To Steven and Ray Alldrick and all of their helpers who played any sort of part in the events production, well done.

The promise of rain did eventuate later in the evening with a storm rolling through the town, sending owners of Roadsters looking for some undercover parking. Its all part of Hot Rodding and no one was complaining. Monday morning saw the majority of car owners hit the roads out of Narradera for home – no doubt tired from a huge weekend of Hot Rodding over the Easter Holiday. See you all in 2020‌

The town of Narrandera love having the Hot Rod run take over the area every Easter. So much so, that the events organisers have been working with the local Council and have had permanent signage added around the area, including at Marie Bashir Park, stating the Hot Rod Event happens every Easter. Just goes to show that small country towns appreciate this type of event bringing money and patronage into their community.

HARDCORE ardtop H

With 427-cubes of Mopar muscle powering this Valiant Hardtop, it’s a Master Class in how to build a tough street car. 92

93

MICK MCDONALD – 1970 VF VALIANT HARDTOP PICS – BLAKE WILLIAMSON / INSANE GRUNT AUTOMOTIVE PHOTOGRAPHY WORDS – PAUL BECK

At the impressionable age of 12, Mick McDonald spotted a tough and loud VF Coupe cruising the streets. That image was etched into his brain and was the catalyst for this build. Just three years later, the then 15-year old Mick bought this coupe for just $450! Yes it was run down and was in desperate need of a rebuild, but it was the starting point Mick needed. That was in 1989. Three years later, the Coupe was on the road with a 360/727 combo. Up until 2006, the Coupe had seen a number of different engine combo’s before the next big rebuild saw it emerge as it looks now. After persevering for some 12-years, Mick finally has the Valiant hardtop he had dreamed of building all those years ago…

94

95

Though Mick has some unfinished business on the quarter-mile, the Valiant is destined to be more a regular cruiser with just occasional trips to the drag strip. When purchased for just $450, you wouldn’t expect to have bought a pristine car. The sheet metal needed attention and during its last rebuild, it got all the love and attention it needed. Obvious changes to the body include the cowl bonnet, but did you also pick the ’67 Dodge Dart taillights and ’68 Dodge Dart bumper? And that colour! What a colour? It actually started as Honda Champaign but has been modified with white pearl to help the colour stand out more. And standout it does! The body looks much smoother thanks to the removal of the factory mouldings and badges from each side, with just Hurst badges making an appearance on the front guards and two small badges on the boot lid. Breaking away from the latest trend of black-centred wheels, Mick decided upon polished Weld Wheels to help brighten the exterior look.

The insides of this tough Valiant have copped a huge makeover which saw the front buckets get the flick in favour of a pair of SAAS buckets, which in turn necessitated that the rear bench be recovered to suit in black velour. The factory console was also added to the “not to be reused pile of parts, with a Hurst Pistol-Grip shifter now taking up space on the trans tunnel. Just behind the SAAS steering wheel sits a modified dash facia that now holds no less than eight, all-important AutoMeter gauges. 96

97

Other interior additions include a moly, 6-point roll cage with removable side intrusion bars and taxi bar, along with DJ Safety harness belts for when Mick hits the strip! As for a stereo, Mick reckons the only sound he needs to hear come from that tunnel-rammed 427ci Mopar monster small block!

After persevering for some 12-years, Mick finally has the Valiant hardtop he had dreamed of building all those years ago‌

There’s no denying that Chrysler engines are great for making reliable horsepower. And really, if you were to bolt anything other than Mopar into a Valiant, you’d be asking for a lifetime of trouble. No problems like that for Mick. His Valiant is powered by a 360 Magnum Race block that now features 427-inches and boasts a custom sheet-metal tunnel ram, twin 750hp Holley carbs, W5 heads, BPE stroker crank, Callies Comp Star H-beam rods and a solid roller cam that lets anyone with half-decent hearing know, this small block means business. Mick built the combo himself and on pump fuel, made 667hp. A switch to VP Fuels Roo16 saw an increase to 682hp! Mick also pieced together the entire exhaust system using 4-into-1 custom headers, dual 3-inch pipes and Hooker Aero Chamber mufflers.

98

99

The A727 trans is more than up to the task of handling the power now that it’s been fitted with a host of top shelf internals that make this box almost bullet-proof. Down the rear, you can forget about finding a Ford diff. This Valiant is all-Mopar so Mick has bolted up a 4.11-geared, full spooled Dana-60 rear end with 35-spline axles added for good measure. Do you think Mick is serious about horsepower! There’s been plenty of work gone into the Val’s underside too – and let’s face it, they need all the help they can get. Mick has fixed any handling woes by adding Viking Warrior double adjustable shocks to the torsion bar front end, along with modified VH Commodore rack and pinion steering set up. The rear end wasn’t left stock either. The shocks are Afco Big Guns that worked in with Caltrac bars and a Gazzard Bros anti-roll bar. Disc brakes also feature at each corner and get their stopping power from a CL Valiant, double diaphragm booster.

Builds like this only happen because of dedicated people all willing to put in some time and effort to see the project through and Mick would like to give a big thumbs up to Jason Pardoen for any hours of metal work and the roll cage; David VanLoon for the awesome 100 paint; Ian Presser for help with the body work, Ross Miller for the wiring and last but not least, Rod Bowman and David Bishop for their efforts. Cheers boys!

THE RUMBLER

Troy Trepanier has made a name for himself by turning once ugly cars into works of art – and none more than the Rambler wagon dubbed Rumbler. The smoothed body sits on a custom Pro-Street chassis with an injected Chev for power and a trick interior for those cruising it. Such an iconic, Pro-Street car!

1964 EH WAGON

Ben Judd’s Street Machine of the Year winning EH wagon is a mix of subtle and outstanding modifications. STEVE & MARY LOWE – 1970 CHEVROLET NOVA PICS – Stephen Taylor @ The Motorsports Project WORDS – Paul Beck

I’m sure I speak on behalf of every single car guy in Australia that loves big tyres, big engines and tough cars when I say “Our Rego Laws Suck!” Unlike the US, we can only legally go as wide as 10-inch rims on the back and have to run a minimum of 7-inch rims on the front. Heaven forbid that you make any alterations to the cars chassis! That would surely put you in the same league as an ISIS terrorist or even worse, a Bank CEO! Thankfully, we can still feature true Pro-Street cars whether they are home-built in Australia, or created in the good ol’ US of A, like Steve and Mary Lowe’s tough-as Chevy 1970 Nova. This Nova is actually the second Pro-Streeter they have built and cruised. The first, a 72’ Nova, was built in 1983 after visiting the ’82 Street Machine Nationals for the first time. After tearing that car down to do some upgrades, life got in the way of the progress and after it sat around for a while untouched, it was sold off. A short stint playing on two-wheels followed, but the desire to own another Pro-Street Nova was too strong to ignore.

112

This Nova is actually the second Pro-Streeter they have built and cruised. The first, a 72’ Nova, was built in 1983 after visiting the ’82 Street Machine Nationals for the first time.

113

It’s around that time that Steve stumbled across the Pro-Street Era page on Facebook. This page reignited the fire in Steve and when he came across an ad for a half-finished Nova, he sought it out and purchased it the very next day. What followed was a thorough rebuild ending up with the finished product you see here. When purchased, the Frost Green paint, steel 4-inch cowl bonnet, cage and tinwork had already been completed so Steve really had to concentrate more on the mechanicals and interior space.

Building a Pro-Street car is about taking things to extremes. And Steve has certainly done that with the Nova’s big block Chev powerplant. Built by Big Al’s Toy Box, a Big M Dart block is the starting point for the 540-cube fat block. Filled to the brim with good gear including an Eagle forged steel crank and steel H-Beam rod combo, 8.5:1 JE blower pistons and a Comp billet roller cam that provides an idle that turns heads at 100-metres! The polished alloy APE heads have been fitted with Manley stainless valves and Comp springs and bolt up to the Dart block to create a tough long motor. The induction is one of the most important parts of the Pro-Street build, and Steve got it right on his stout 540. Without doubt the hero of this engine is the BDS 8/71 blower set-up that relies on two 950cfm boost-reference blower carbs to supply fuel to light fire from the MSD ignition system spark. Making an impressive 824hp on pump fuel, the engine is both powerful and reliable for regular street use. And doesn’t it look bloody tough too!

114

Making an impressive 824hp on pump fuel, the engine is both powerful and reliable for regular street use. And doesn’t it look bloody tough too!

115

An engine like this needs an equally tough driveline. Steve has ticked those boxes too. The Turbo 400 is a Super Street item from TCI and uses a Derale cooler with two fans to keep the operating temperatures in order. The converter of choice is a 10-inch TCI with a stall speed of 3500rpm. From there, the power heads to those massive Mickey Thompson Sportsman tyres where the severely narrowed and braced 9-inch diff takes care of business. Suspension wise, it’s pretty basic under the Nova. There’s a quartet of QA-1 coil over shocks added with CPP tubular control arms replace the factory items on the otherwise stock front end. The braking system is an all Wilwood affair. The rolling stock are 15x15 and 15x4-inch Billet Specialties Street Lite’s wrapped in 31x18inch and 26x7.5-inch Mickey T’s respectively.

It’s all business inside the Nova. The strictly two-seater interior features a mass of roll-cage and tin work where the rear passengers used to sit before the car got Pro-Streeted. Just two TMI seats remain and have had the headrests deleted before being covered in black and green, bringing the body colour inside. The door trims copped the same treatment. No Pro-Street themed interior would be complete without plenty of extra gauges added to the dash, and Steve has to keep an eye on no less than five small AutoMeter dials and one big AutoMeter tacho with the all-important shift light. And, no matter how bad your eyesight was, there’s no missing those oh-so-cool Kilduff Lightning Rod shifters.

After a year-long build, Steve and Mary are once again enjoying cruising the Nova. Although there have been several offers made to buy the car, Steve has rejected each one knowing full well that he would only go and build another just like it. Instead, he will continue making improvements to it including some Aussie ingenuity in the form of a Joe-Blo EFI injector hat in the not too distant future. 116

PICS SUPPLIED BY

When asked what the highlight of the build has been, Steve told us; “I have won quite a few trophies with the car, but the Holy Grail would have to be winning one of the three Legends Awards at the 2018 Street Machine Nationals in DuQuoin. This 118 was extremely special to me because it was voted by the 4-5 Pro-Street Legends that I have admired since 1982. I couldn’t believe they thought my little Nova was worthy of it!” Steve, Mary and the Nova will be back in Pro-Street heartland come the 2019 Street Machine Nationals. And yes, we are all still jealous in this part of the world…
