From the Desk
Welcome to 2020! Its going to be a huge year for Killer Rides!
We’re only a couple of weeks into the new year and already things are getting busy. By now you would have noticed some changes to the design of the magazine. After Issue 19 went live, the mag was taken into the workshop for some tweaks in the styling, with the most obvious change being the dual-page front cover. What do you think? Moving to this format will allow a greater range of front cover options, and man do I have some cool covers coming up! Internally, the design has been streamlined to make Killer Rides easier to read and more modern. They say less is more and I have to agree. Let me know what you think about the new look… 2020 is a big year for Killer Rides. We have the first Pro-Street Sunday coming up on March 22nd at Fairfield Showground and also Killer Rides #4 inside the Illawarra Hockey Centre over the weekend of August 15th & 16th, but on top of that I am launching Super Rod - a sister magazine to Killer Rides that will cater to the Hot Rod and Custom Scene. The first issue is due online in February and will be quarterly from that point on. CLASSIC MUSCLE

WHAT’S HAPPENING NEW MOTORSPORT VENUE FOR VICTORIA
After 15-years of lobbying, the Cardinia Shire Council have officially given the nod of approval on Monday 9th December for the development of 128 hectares of land on McGregor Road for the Cardinia Motor Recreation and Education Park.
The $200 million facility will be a world class motorsport complex is set to be completed in a 8 short two-years and will feature a 3.6 km V8 Supercar-capable circuit, an 1/8-mile drag strip, a 1.4km rally cross course, 900-metre go-kart track, a driver education centre, pit facilities and 50,000sqm of spectator viewing area’s including grandstands. There are also plans for a sport-shooting range, vehicle storage buildings and a track side accommodation facility. Project developer, Podium 1’s chief operations officer Felicity Richardson said the company is very excited with the approval and said the local region will benefit significantly from the complex which is set to become the motorsports hub in Victoria. She also added, “We are now going to start working on the detailed design which will probably take a couple more months, and then we will progress to construction.”

VICTORIAN HOT ROD & COOL RIDES SHOW
As I put this issue online, I am also packing my gear in preparation to head down the Hume Highway to Melbourne to take in the annual Vic Hot Rod and Cool Rides show inside the historic Exhibition Building in Carlton. The show is the first indoor event of 2020 and promises to showcase some of the best Hot Rods, Street Machines and Customs currently on the scene along with some cool oldies, live music and more. Don’t miss this one during the January long weekend! Although some local residents are unhappy with the complex being around 1300-metres from residential properties, a council spokesperson said council reviewed the noise assessments provided to date that were undertaken by the proponent and they were deemed “satisfactory”. That’s great news for all motorsport fans in Victoria. The question begs though, who will be first to stage an event there – Autofest, Powercruise or Summernats?
WHAT’S HAPPENING PRO-STREET SUNDAY
The first Pro-Street Sunday is now officially on this year! So now is the time get your entry sorted to be a part of the unique event. Along with the show and shine at Fairfield Showground in Sydney’s west, the event will also feature, trade stands, food trucks and also a performance parts swap meet. So clean out your garage and bring those unwanted parts and accessories to the only show catering just for Pro-Street and Pro-Mod vehicles. To get your entry form, go to www.killerrides.com.au

WHAT’S HAPPENING A TRUE TOYOTA HYBRID
Forget about mixing fuel and electricity, for this unusual project, the team at joined one of their Nascar, 358ci V8 engines with a classic 1956 Chevy Belair two-door sedan. Why? No one is really sure, but the result is spectacular to say the least. Sure, from the outside, the Belair’s classic styling has been retained – even down to the classic Cragar S/S style rims, but it’s when you lift the bonnet, things get really interesting. OK, so the purists out there would be reaching for their heart medication at the thought of anything other than a small block Chev being fitted between the inner guards, but that’s been done to death! The Toyota tech team slotted in a 700hp, fuel injected Nascar engine that will sit on 10,000rpm all day and sound awesome doing it.
The TRD logo on 12 the rocker covers and air cleaners give the game away, but there’s no denying this classic Chevy has a heartbeat like no other ’56 Chev on the planet. And in a game where we all try to outdo each other with our cars, the Toyota crew have just trumped us all! Valued at around $100,000USD, the Chev is going under the hammer at the Cars of Dreams Museum liquidating Auction held by RM Auctions. I’m sure someone will see the value in the ’56 and snap themselves up an absolute bargain…

GREAT EVENT COVERAGE
Hi Paul, One thing I have really enjoyed about Killer Rides is the fact that you feature lots of cool events – some of which are well known to us here in Australia and others that I’ve never heard of before. It’s great to see what the car scene is doing in Japan, the USA and other areas. Thanks for broadening my horizons. Great magazine. Keep up the great work. Ken T via Email Hi Ken, I spend a lot of time searching for interesting events to cover and like you, I love seeing the cars and events from across the globe. There’s plenty more to come. Stay tuned… 16
GETTING’ PERSONAL
G’day Paul, Thanks so much for taking the time to chat to us at the recent Bargo Show and Shine. It was a pleasure to meet you as I have been reading your magazines since Issue #1 of Extreme. My son also sends his gratitude for giving him some pointers with his new camera. Even though he is only 11, he told me he wants to work at Killer Rides when he’s old enough. Thanks again for being ‘one of the boys’. Kevin and Toby via Messenger Hi Kevin and Toby, It’s always great to chat to readers of the magazine to get some feedback – good or bad! Toby seemed very keen to learn as well. We have to encourage the young ones to take up the art form that is photography. Thanks for your support. Hope you enjoy the new look Killer Rides for 2020!
EFFING AWESOME
Hi Paul, I’m not usually a fan of old trucks, but last month’s cover car was simply amazing – a true work of art as you called it. I love the fact it still has Ford power, especially with that many cubes and horsepower. That F100 is everything Killer Rides is. Hope to see more just like it! Stephen R via Email
TRUCK ME, THAT’S GOOD!
G’day Paul, If you had a Car of the Year competition you’d only have to look as far as last issue’s F100 truck. What a tough rig. There’s nothing on that truck that I don’t like. From the big engine, to the big wheels and big attitude, that is, in my opinion, one of the best builds I have seen. I can’t wait to see it in person. Tyler K via Messenger
STIRLING IN SILVER
Hey Paul, What a masterpiece David Aquilina’s custom F100 is. It’s so great to see something so modified get driven. Even though it’s obviously detailed everywhere with an over the top engine package, it’s a credit to David and the builders involved to be able to drive it and not just keep it as a show piece. Well done to everyone that contributed to the build. Richie C via Email Hey Guys, Yep, the truck is stunning. Photo’s just don’t do it justice. It’s so smooth and has so many cool parts incorporated into the build, that you’ll spend plenty of time going over it if you get to see if at a show. And with that 900hp, 600ci Ford fat block providing the grunt, its perfectly suited to Killer Rides.

DARE TO BE DIFFERENT DEANZ RODZ AND RACE CARZ VIPER POWERED KARMANN GHIA
TOTAL
Keith, along with mate Dean, own and operate Deanz Rodz and Race Carz in downtown Graymont, Illinois and spend their days creating custom masterpieces for customers. When Keith decided he wanted a toy of his own, he wanted to do something completely left of centre, and they don’t get much further left than a hot rodded Volkswagen. The Karmann was actually getting built inhouse for a customer and was half way through the build when the owner decided he’d had a change of heart and sold it. From there, it ended up in Kentucky. Not wanting anyone else to take credit for their work, Keith tracked it down and bought it back to Illinois where the build continued on.

Wild. Insane. Over the Top. That’s not usually how you’d describe the Karmann Ghia unless of course you’re looking at Keith’s Viper-powered full-tilt custom Karmann.
650hp Viper V10
21
The body is so far removed from what the Karmann engineers had design, yet it still has the Karmann Ghia feel. Put it next to a stocker though and the mods are plainly obvious. The roof line has been reworked, the factory lights at both ends have been treated to custom work and the bonnet has been modified to give the intake manifold clearance. The cowl has been stretched as has the nose by an extra 4-inches. The drip rails have been removed giving the body a much smoother look. The firewall has been recessed by 21-inches and there’s an all-new floor incorporating wheel-tubs. All the sheet metal work is hand-fabricated in the shop. Once the bodywork was completed, John Wargo added the custom blue and dark silver colour combo and then it was off to The Custom Shop in Flanagan for wiring and final assembly. The body sits on top of a custom made chassis that uses a full-billet independent front end and one-off billet independent rear. An integrated roll cage is connected to the frame and is hidden within the trim. In standard form, the Karmann used a 36hp air-cooled VW engine for power – if you can all it that. Looking in the boot lid now won’t reveal anything but a fuel system. All the good stuff is up front! Forget any LS-conversion here, Keith went all the way with a 650hp, Viper V10 and 6-speed box! Now you know why the firewall was pushed rearward so far. Keith now drives from where the rear seat used to be located.

Glenn Denno from Denno’s Custom Interiors got the nod to bring the Karmann’s insides to the same high standard as the rest of the build. To do that, the custom seats and door panels were covered in black leather and compliment the colour-coded custom steel dash and centre console. With custom gauges and lots of one-off billet components added to the interior trim, the interior keeps the full custom theme flowing.

The entire build took more than three years to complete, but that includes around 12 months where it sat idle. When the Karmann was completed, it hit the show scene hard, promoting the shop where it was constructed and winning awards at every outing from Boston to Vegas! They even managed to win the 2013 Lokar Car of the Year!. With its show duties completed, the boys intend to drive the over-powered compact coupe as much as time allows. With an insane power-to-weight ratio, chances are they will be wearing wide-open grins! The boys next venture is a V12-powered 1940 Lincoln Zephyr. That should be interesting…

PAUL & MILAN_PRO FLO PERFORMANCE_LJ TORANA
WORDS / PICS / VIDEO – PAUL BECK

INSANITY
How do you stand out in a crowd of tough Torana’s? Up the ante with 940-cubes of tough Sonny Leonard big block in the wildest LJ imaginable.
26
Paul Sant and his team at Pro Flo Performance have gained a huge reputation for building some of the wildest street and strip cars on the planet and with a long list of customers waiting for their turn, that trend doesn’t look like slowing any time soon. Each time the team unveil a new ride, the Internet goes into meltdown, and it was no different with the Torana. We ran an in the build feature on the LJ when the rolling body was fitted with its monstrous driveline and the amount of hype the car gained back then was nothing short of phenomenal. When the car made its public debut, Facebook was flooded with images and videos of the Torana’s uncovering. In no time at all, Pro Flo’s latest creation went global! And for good reason…
27
When the tired old Torana arrived at the shop, it was in OK shape for its age. The condition of the body wasn’t really a concern, because by the time the crew finished fabricating, there wasn’t going to be a lot of the factory steel left. Whilst the body shell itself is still all metal, the boot lid and custom bonnet (that includes the scuttle panel) are now made from fibreglass – both of which fastened with push button tabs. The wheel arches have been stretched accordingly to squeeze the one-off set of 20x7” and 24x15” Billet Schott wheels wrapped in ultra-low-profile tyres. When the Torana heads to the track, these will be swapped over for the appropriate race wheel and tyre combo. Danny at Custom Body Works is widely considered as a paint guru and set 28 about removing all the imperfections from the body before applying a few silky-smooth coats of PPG Jet Black which has been highlighted by the cool graphics, coloured to match wheels. The icing on the cake is the adjustable rear wing and dual parachutes!
Each time the team unveil a new ride, the Internet goes into meltdown, and it was no different with the Torana.
29
History shows us that Pro-Flo customers are seriously into horsepower. No one has ever picked their car up from the workshop and left with a stock 283-cube small block providing the power – if you can call it that. This Torana was always destined for a big cube engine, and that’s what it got. So how big is big? It doesn’t seem that long ago that anything above 500-cubes was considered huge, but by Sonny’s Racing Engines standards, that 30 nothing to brag about. Their engine packages start at 525ci, and that’s still a small block! The boys opted for one of their “street” series engines making in excess of 1600hp from its 940 cubic inches! Impressed? If you’re not, you’re reading the wrong magazine! The engine starts as a billet block which is fitted with a Bryant billet crank swinging Carrillo steel billet rods, Wiseco
pistons with pins and rings from Total Seal. The 70mm camshaft is a Sonny’s special grind and gives the engine an incredibly serious idle. A custom belt drive, MSD Crank trigger ignition and ATI balancer finish off the beastly bottom end. The Hemi cylinder heads are massive! There’s more aluminium used in these that most normal full alloy engines! CNC-machined in house, the heads feature Manley titanium valves wrapped in PSI springs and SAR/T&D rockers. The oh-so-cool Sonny’s billet rockers covers hide all the goodness from sight. Filling the gap between the heads is an SAR sheet-metal intake manifold holding two SAR/ Accufab 2300cfm throttle bodies high above the Torana bonnet line. The engine relies on a Dailey 5-stage Dry Sump oiling system to keep it lubricated and is designed to run on regular pump fuel – just the thing for a “street car!”
31
And if that much horsepower isn’t enough, there’s a big shot of Nitrous just a flick of a switch away!
And if that much horsepower isn’t enough, there’s a big shot of Nitrous just a flick of a switch away! With the relative lightweight LJ playing host to this monster motor, the power to weight ratio can only be described as amazing! Pro Flo also fabricated the big custom headers that unwind into a dual 5” exhaust system that exits just before the rear wheel arches. A tough engine needs a tough trans, so Paul had Al’s Race Glide build a Pro-Mod 2-speed Turbo 400 auto that is fronted with a Neal Chance converter with a stall speed of 5000rpm. Nestled in between those huge rear rollers is a Pro Flo built Sheetmetal rear end holding 40-spline, fullfloating axles and a billet Tom’s centre. That’s one tough driveline!
32
As you’d expect with a car carrying this much horsepower, the interior is a mass of chrome moly tube. The ProMod style cage surrounds the driver and ties into the tube chassis to keep the Torana from twisting itself inside out. The seats, dash, tubs and door trims are all carbon fibre and offer strength as well as an all-important reduction 33 in weight. Anyone with half decent eye-sight could tell that this interior is all about getting the job done. From the exposed transmission to the Al’s shifter, the Fueltech dash, Joes Race Products steering wheel and Simpson Harness’ this interior is all business.
Original build rendering by Aiden’s Design and Illustrations...
The plan is to show the vehicle for some six or so months and then change the wheels and hit the track.
34
The fabricated chassis was designed by Pro Flo to not only handle the power being pushed through it, but also get the Torana sitting low. Up front, there’s a custom rack assembly, with double A-arms 35 and Strange double adjustable coil-over shocks. The disc’s measure 14-inches and rely on 6-piston calipers to slow the Torana down after crossing the beams at warp-speed. The rear end also features Strange adjustable coil-overs and a four-link set up with a wishbone track locator. Again, big Strange discs with 4-piston calipers are hidden inside those crazy wheels. And if they fail, those big ‘chutes will bring the Torana to a stop.
The two-year build culminated in the Torana’s unveiling at Summernats 33 just a few weeks ago. Those gathered around when the sheets were removed found themselves gasping with their jaws wide-open as Paul revealed the cubic capacity and of course, horsepower figure. The plan now is to show the vehicle for some six or so months and then change the wheels and hit the track. Paul isn’t one to boast about what he thinks the Torana will do in regards to the ET and miles per hour numbers, but we do know, that when it happens, it will be over quickly. No doubt, when that first pass is completed, the internet will once again be making this Torana the sensation that it deserves to be.

On December 7, Heathcote Park Raceway was dominated by all things Mopar for the 2019 Mopar Nationals.
Co-Hosted by the Central Victorian Chrysler Club, the Mopar Nationals is in its 7th year of running on the first Saturday of December each year. The meet is open to all makes of Chrysler including Dodge, Jeep, AMC, Plymouth, Desoto etc and also anything powered by a Chrysler-based engine.

Aside from the Drag Racing, the Mopar Nationals also included a show and shine along with a swap meet for those looking for that hard to find part for their project and a burnout competition!

44
45
This year’s event attracted hundreds of cool Mopar’s ranging from early Australian and US muscle cars through to the latest hi-tech performance SRT models including lots of tough 300C’s and Jeeps!
One of the more interesting cars at the Nationals had to be the Gasser-style Dodge Pheonix with its nose raised high, big and little rubbers, front bumper mounted fuel tank and induction hanging a long way passed the bonnet line for all to see. As you’d expect, those big back tyres copped a hiding!

48
The 2019 Mopar Nationals was a complete success and set a high standard for the 2020 event to live up to. I have no doubt the Mopar family will be back in force at Heathcote Park on the first Saturday in December next year for another big Mopar Nationals event.

STEVE DANIC_1966 MUSTANG COUPE
WORDS / PICS / VIDEO BY – PAUL BECK
FATE
Steve Danic wasn’t in the market for a Mustang, but when this tough ’66 Coupe got towed into his workshop needing some work, somehow he knew it was never going to leave…
50
51
It seems the then owner had some issues with the Mustang that were doing his head in. Having had just about enough, he sent the coupe in to have all the issues rectified. The problem was though, that the more they delved into fixing each fault, more would appear. All the time, Steve was loving spending time on the Mustang and when the owner decided he no longer wanted the hassles with the build, Steve saw the opportunity to make this cool coupe his own. A deal was done, and the problem-solving work continued – only this time with Steve holding the rego papers.
By this stage, Steve had been over just about every part of the Mustang and knew it was a very special car that someone had spent a lot of time creating. It appeared to be a no-expense spared build, so paying a small fortune for the car wasn’t that big of a deal. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for – well most of the time anyway! When the day came that he had overcome all of the problems the Mustang had arrived with, Steve was ready to hit the road and has been doing so ever since…
Muscle cars of the 60’s had a certain style that you just don’t muck around with. This Pony car’s sheet-metal has been left just how the factory had intended. Sure, it’s a lot smoother now and the panel gaps are more precise, but the essence of the Mustang has been retained. Just the bonnet pins and scoop deviate from the authenticity of the Mustangs heritage. There’s no doubt plenty of time had been spent relieving the body of any imperfections gathered over the years before the Ford-spec Lightning Strike paint was applied to the body, engine bay and now smooth underside. Against the abundance of chrome work, and highlighted by the contrasting red stripe, the body colour suits the coupe perfectly.
52
53
Steve has spent plenty of time, effort and the folding stuff to take this Mustang from where it was to what it is now.
Inside, it’s a mix of pure muscle car mixed with tough streeter. The all red seats and door trims scream 1966 and have been bought back to life thanks to the guys at Unique Marine and Auto Upholstery. All the factory chrome trimmings around the seats and in the door trims were renewed as well.
54
Overall, it’s a damn cool place to spend time in when cruising!
55
The factory dash facia was put back into its original home, but not before being filled with AutoMeter dials to keep Steve well-informed with what’s happening with the Mustangs vitals. The steering wheel is a billet item, but keeps with the muscle car style, whilst the standard issue shifter and console has made way for a more precise B&M Quarter stick. Overall, it’s a damn cool place to spend time in when cruising!
Lifting the bonnet reveals a single carb Windsor sporting 363 cubic inches and show car detailing. There’s lots of polished alloy, chrome plating and plenty of contrasting dark grey paint to give the small block a huge visual appeal. But it’s what you can’t see that makes this Windsor special. Built by Ed Brodie, yes “MR-HJ” Ed Brodie, the engine started with a Dart Sportsman block that received a forged 347ci crank swinging tougher rods and JE flat top pistons along with a roller cam and Isky lifters that gives the stretched five-litre a menacing idle. Next to join the party were a pair of AFR Outlaw alloy heads that scored Jessel roller rockers to deal with the high-revs the engine was destined for. Supplying the fuel is a 750cfm Ultra carb mounted to a Victor Junior intake. The Pro-Racing fabricated 4-into-1 headers and coated dual 3-inch exhaust system dump the spent gases with ease. On the dyno, the 363-cube Windsor produced an impressive 560hp at 7300rpm on Premium 98 pump fuel.
56
A suitably built C10 transmission is bolted up to the engine with the high-stall converter in place to deal with the power from idle upwards. Down the back sits a narrowed 9-inch diff sporting Detroit Tru-Trak centre with 4.11-gears, Strange Pro-Modular centre section and tough 31-spline axles from the same company.
57
The underside copped plenty of attention from the floor pans to the braking and fuel systems. Now covered in the same colour as the top, the Mustangs floor pan has been smoothed off and painted to the same standard, showing the attention to detail put in by the previous owner. Everything is symmetrical and neatly put in its place. Hiding in behind the 15x8” and 17x5” Weld Racing wheels sits a quartet of disc brakes that bring the Mustang back from any speed with ease.
58
59
The problem was though, that the more they delved into fixing each fault, more would appear.
THANKS TO:
Danics Tyre and Auto Centre. Ed Brodie Race Engine Developments. Pro Racing. Unique Marine and Auto Upholstery
Steve has spent plenty of time, effort and the folding stuff to take this Mustang from where it was to what it is now. Although he has owned plenty of cars over the years, nothing comes even close to having as much ‘WOW’ factor as this Mustang and he has found himself enjoying going to lots of car events now and meeting a cool bunch of like-minded people. He grinned widely when he said his wife LeeAnn, who really isn’t into cars at all, is also enjoying everything the Mustang is about. Fate has a way of doing that!

The City Cruise had some tough cars on the Street!
Even with the devastating fires happening across the country, Summernats 33 still hosted some of the wildest cars in the country with just about something for everyone on display. From what I have heard, the numbers were understandably smaller than usual, but there’s not much you can do about the weather when Mother Nature has her cranky pants on! Our man, Chad Silvey, was on hand to capture a tonne of images of the 2020 event. Here’s Chad’s “Snap Shot” of Summernats 33. Enjoy!

Greg Angus’ job as a Car Wholesaler paid off big time when a mate asked him to pick up an “old car” from Mornington.
GREG ANGUS - HT GTS MONARO PICS - JIMMY TEE PHOTOGRAPHY / WORDS - PAUL BECK
That old car just happened to be a classic HT GTS Monaro that his mate was going to “flip” to make some extra dollars. He didn’t have to wait too long to make a sale! Greg has always had a soft spot for the classic Aussie muscle car and when the opportunity presented itself, Greg just couldn’t help himself – he had to have it. Like most cars that require a tow-truck, the Monaro was in a sad state, but still, a genuine GTS Monaro in any salvageable condition is still worth owning. Greg knew that and towed the Monaro back to his own garage where the build process would begin…
74
75
Greg stripped the tired old coupe back to its bare bones to see what he had gotten himself into. Whilst the foundation for a tough street car was there, it needed professional help, so Greg shipped the rolling body off to good mate and panel man extraordinaire Jason Hoctor to put his skills to good use. Jason stripped the metal back to raw steel and replaced anything that was simply not useable.
Greg has spent two years turning that once neglected piece of Aussie muscle car history back to a pro-street styled, blown street car and drives the wheels off it every chance he gets.
It’s a brave man who wants to take a used and abused, 50year old car and make it good enough to wear a shiny new coat of gloss black. But that’s exactly what Greg wanted, putting even more pressure on Jason. With the body work done, and both Jason and Greg confident the Monaro’s aging panels were straighter than ever before, it was off for colour. Shane Gluyas was called upon to prepare the body for paint and lay on the colour. Shane laid on the deep black and contrasting red strips over what it essentially a stock bodied Monaro. Not wanting to deviate too far from the Generals original spec sheet, the perfectly straight body keeps all the badges and mouldings in place, except for the sill mouldings.
The initial build of the car didn’t include the blower or twin carbs for the induction. It was a simple small block Chev combo that made the Monaro a nice, tough cruiser. But like most hardcore car guys, Greg wanted more power. He blames it on his bi-polar, but we all know it’s built into our DNA to crave for more horsepower on a regular basis.
Greg did consider fitting some 8-stack injection, but ultimately, the rush of the blower set up won out.
The second incarnation of the engine saw it stretched out to 383-cubes thanks to the Scat crank, Eagle rods and SRP pistons combo. The tough bottom was the perfect platform for the modified RHS heads to be bolted to before fitting what most consider the ultimate tough-street induction system, the polished Weiand 6/71 blower and twin 600dp Holley carbs. The sight of the induction hang through the Monaro’s bonnet makes quite a statement. Greg did consider fitting some 8-stack injection, but ultimately, the rush of the blower set up won out. After breaking an engine, Greg had good friends Alex and Kris piece together the new blown combo that makes a reliable 600hp. Just the thing to get to any number of tough car events on the crowded Melbourne scene.
76
77
A stage 3, Turbo 350 auto is bolted to the pumped 383 and is fronted with a 3500-stall converter from Hugo’s and passes the power through to the narrowed nine-inch diff housing 4.11-gears, mini-spool and 31-spline axles. That’s one tough driveline.
Just like the exterior, the interior pays homage to how it was back in the day when the Monaro was conquering race tracks around the country and ferrying families to school, the shops and an holidays. There’s no glitz and glamour like todays cars, just a sports car with black vinyl trim and the bare basics. The factory dash remains in place as does the over-sized steering wheel, AM-radio and faux-timber panelling. Just to make sure of some of the engines vital statistics are reading right, Greg added a couple of AutoMeter gauges and ditched the factory shifter and console for a B&M Pro-Stick shifter that is more in tune with the cars build theme. Greg has kept the interior mods to a minimum so if the need to go back to 78 stock ever happened, it’s a day in the shed to make it happen!
79
The Monaro’s underside is traditional street machine spec. It’s been fitted with Pedders 90/10 shocks and lowered coils in the front and reset lowered leaf springs in the rear bringing the body down over the 15x3” and 15x8” Centerline Autodrag rims.
80
Greg has spent two years turning that once neglected piece of Aussie muscle car history back to a pro-street styled, blown street car and drives the wheels off it every chance he gets. Since its completion, Greg and his tough Monaro have been to so car meets and events all over Melbourne that he has probably lost count of the miles he has added to the factory speedo. Asked if there’s anything he would change with the car, Greg simply replied, “I love it!” Enough said…

82
Thanks to Rob Bellio and the team at Kingpin Events & Social Club, the 3rd Hot Rod Social Breakfast gathering on Melbourne’s famous Lygon Street attracted a big mix of Hot Rod’s, Customs and Muscle Cars!
83
For me, there’s no better cruise road than Lygon Street. Lined with cafes and restaurants catering for all tastes and budgets and offering dual lanes each way, it’s the perfect place to show off your pride and joy.
84
The sight, sounds and atmosphere on Lygon Street this morning is exactly what the car scene is all about - having fun with cars!
85
The tree-lined roadways were filled with the rumbling of big engines as the cars started to arrive around 6am in an effort to find the ideal parking spot. By 7am, the streets were filled with all kinds of cool cars and even cooler people, all hungry and looking for that perfect breakfast spot.
The sight, sounds and atmosphere on Lygon Street this morning is exactly what the car scene is all about - having fun with cars!
86
87
But not everyone was content with parking and eating, many people attended the event just to cruise the strip, reliving what it must have been like back in the days when you could fill your fuel tank for ten bucks and cruise all day! The sight, sounds and atmosphere on Lygon Street this morning is exactly what the car scene is all about – having fun with cars!

RAY ZARB - XY FALCON
WORDS - PAUL BECK
PICS - JIMMY TEE PHOTOGRAPHY
MAKING
PROGRESS
92
93
Spotted cruising down a Melbourne street, an eager Ray Zarb stopped the owner of the ‘71 Falcon and asked if it was for sale. Less than 24-hours later, Ray owned a tired, but tough XY GT replica!
It was 2003 when Ray swapped a pile of cash for the then Track Red GT look-a-like, and Ray was content on driving his Falcon the way it was for all of about an hour when the desire to have the Falcon looking better kicked in. Ray drove the Falcon to Competition Engines where Bobby and Zoran were to take on the quick makeover. They had already built the 351-cube engine in the car, so there was no need to worry about that side of things just yet. Ray wanted some cosmetic changes and soon, the Falcon sported all new XYGT trim in white, had the GT-spec dash restored and also made sure the factory sunroof worked like new. The wheels were swapped out for Auto Drag Centerlines and the diff was narrowed to suit the bigger offset. The Falcon served Ray in this guise until 2009 when an unfortunate engine bay fire kick-started what was to become a full nut a bolt restoration.
94
95 After leaving Ray’s garage, the Falcon was shipped to Tony Spanos at Oxford/BSR Body ‘n’ Paint where his team worked tirelessly on the Falcon for four solid months removing any imperfections from the aging sheet metal and ensuring the body was the best it could be when it came time for the new paint to be laid on.
The decision to leave the body factory fresh was made early in the resto so that once completed, the Falcon kept those classic XY lines.
The decision to leave the body factory fresh was made early in the resto so that once completed, the Falcon kept those classic XY lines. Though the Falcon had been painted Track Red with gold GT-stripes, Ray decided a change was needed so he instructed Tony to lay on the Ford Electric Blue Metallic paint from Glasurit. The familiar GT accents down the bonnet and between the taillights were added in black while the gold side stripes were replaced with more eye-catching versions in bright orange. GT badging and renewed chrome work complete the exterior resto.
With the paint barely dry, the rejuvenated Falcon then moved back to its second home at Competition Engines where the boys were to complete the Falcon’s makeover. The driveline was removed from its mounts and given the once over and freshened up, the entire underside cleaned and painted and all the suspension components powder-coated. This section of the cars build was completed in 2009. The car wasn’t to see the workshop again for any major work until 2017 when Ray and his mate Ange Zavlanos decided to mini tub the Falcon to get bigger 15x10” Centerlines up under the guards. It took many cold late nights over 12 months to get the job completed at home in the garage, where the new diff, built by Zoran was also added. It seems Ray doesn’t sit still for long periods of time, and soon enough, the 295/55 tyre the mini-tubs had allowed, were not longer big enough for his liking. Once again, the Falcon wet it for some rear end “adjustments”. This time though, they scored a hoist and workshop to use courtesy of Arthur Sibonis at Bowen’s Automotive that made the job so much easier. After further massaging, Ray and Ange managed to fit 28x12.5-inch Mickey Thompson Sportsman Pro tyres under the Falcon’s now fatter rear-end.
96
97
While the Falcon was off the road this time, Ray took the down time to speak to Zoran about giving the engine a once over. That once-over though ended up being a full rebuild. The cubes have been upped considerably from 351 to a more impressive 410-cubes. Zoran added a 4340 Scat crank and 6-inch H-Beam rods along with custom JE pistons and a Competition Cams custom solid cam and lifter kit that gives this Falcon an undeniable “don’t mess with me” rumble! The 4V cast heads have been ported and fitted with Comp Cams Magnum roller rockers, ARP rocker studs and much larger valves and bigger springs. The TFC intake manifold is port-matched to the heads, and holds a 1-inch tapered spacer and Pro-Systems 780cfm carb. Hanging off the outer edge of the heads are a pair of coated Genie headers that flow into a dual 3-inch mandrel bent exhaust using Hooker mufflers to keep the noise to an acceptable limit. After the MSD ignition system fires the stroker into life, it produces 607hp on Premium pump fuel. The C10 auto trans was sourced from Mikes Transmissions in the US and features a reverse pattern shift and manual valve body. The converter is a Dominator and has a stall speed of 5000rpm. The nine-inch diff has a fabricated housing, TruTrak centre with 4.33-gears and Moser 31-spline axles.

The braking and suspension systems have been renewed and now has XYGT spec coils in the front, reset 6-leaf GT springs in the rear (which have been relocated due to the mini-tubs) and Monroe shocks all-round. The brakes have been upgraded to XF disc and calipers on the front and GT drums on the rear – 98 all hidden behind those cool satin-finished Centerlines.
99
As for the future, Ray openly admits that he will continually tweak the Falcon proving that these things are never really finished. Stay tuned… The white trim that had been previous fitted, remains in place to this day and still looks the part, especially against the body colour. The restored dash features an 8000rpm GT tacho – which regularly see’s the needle heading that way, and the factory console now plays host to a TCI Outlaw shifter that certainly fits the cars new Tough-Street persona. The factory original Superfringe radio remains in the dash and keeps part of the Falcon’s heritage alive and kicking.
Since the last lot of work was completed, Ray has added plenty of miles to the GT speedo. His XY is a regular at car meets around Melbourne and still remains a head turner – even though the major resto was done over ten years ago. As for the future, Ray openly admits that he will continually tweak the Falcon proving that these things are never really finished. Stay tuned…

With the paint barely dry, the rejuvenated Falcon then moved back to its second home at Competition Engines where the boys were to complete the Falcon’s makeover.

Back in the day, the humble Torana was for main, their first mode of transport. Cars were in abundance and not overly priced and parts were easy to get hold of. It seemed like every second car was a Torana with GTR styling and V8 conversions were rare and mostly crude with home-made engine mounts and slapped together exhausts.
103
As years went on, more people (and many manufacturers) saw the value in putting V8’s into the small Holden and at the height of the Pro-Street era, the Torana had been subjected to just about every engine available from turbo 6’s to blown V8’s of various capacities. The race cars with number plates were the precursor to those who wanted more – more power, more tyre and more speed on the quarter mile tracks around the country.

As far as the Pro-Street cars go, the most famous would have to be the PROST-1 LC built and driven around the streets of Adelaide with its blown injected small block hanging out for all to see. Phil still has the car and its currently getting rebuilt. Another notable Pro-Street car is the MYHYDE LJ built at home by Ivan Hans. With its blown small block sporting two Predator carbs and direct port nitrous, Ivan drove the wheels off the tubbed LJ around Wollongong, even taking it to work a couple of times in the steel works! And who could forget MRMAD, the street-driven, 6-second LJ or Mark Hayes’ LC-4540, 7-second big block Streeter?

With the rules and regulations in place that we must adhere to for rego, it’s a little more difficult to get a highly modified LC/LJ Torana legal these days. Most people install mini-tubs, up to 10-inch rims on the rear and try their best to keep the engine below the bonnet line which is easily achieved when using turbo-chargers or EFI. Some people still opt for six-packs though, but don’t limit themselves to the humble Holden six, with Nissan RB26/30 and Toyota 1J and 2J conversions also used. But the big engine of choice at the moment comes across from enemy lines with the Ford Barra Turbo six being fitted into all kinds of cars including the LC/LJ Torana.

In fact I saw a pristine LJ GTR XU1 go for $175K – that money would buy you a second hand Lambo! For Torana diehards though, they would rather the XU1. Check out some of these cool Torana’s we’ve found.

MIKE DENNISON_1951 HUDSON WASP BUILT BY_KENNYS ROD SHOP
WORDS_PAUL BECK
PICS_BART CEPEK
In Hot Rodding circles, the Hudson isn’t exactly what you’d call a popular choice for a high-end custom build! But there are people out there that live by the old adage “dare to be different!” One such person rocked into Kenny’s Rod Shop in Boise Idaho with a plan to turn his once stock Hudson into a full custom rod. The team that work at Kenny Welch’s shop create dreams, and that’s what this owner had, a dream to own something unique in the Hot Rod world. Sometimes though, dreams get interrupted and part way through the build, the owner decided to part ways with the Hudson. Enter Mike Dennison. He too had the passion for owning an “oddball” custom and couldn’t get his cheque book out quick enough to make the project his! For Mike, being different is what it’s all about, and you have to admit, this Hudson is different! The chances of rocking up next to another at the local Cars and Coffee meet are pretty slim. With the project now back on track, Kenny and his crew got back into creating the worlds most unique Hudson Wasp.
112
For Mike, being different is what it’s all about, and you have to admit, this Hudson is different!
113
So, let’s check out the build. The body is now so much smoother than the factory had intended – that’s obvious with the removal of all side trim, badges, handles and anything else that could be shaved. The KRS team also fabricated the entire rocker to mid-bodyline section of the Tudor as well as folding up some cool custom rear fender skirts for that oh-so-sleek look. While they had the metal working tools out, they also reshaped the rear of the hood to suit the cowl, and then focussed their attention on making the front edge of the hood fit more snugly to the grille. Both the front and rear bumpers have been reworked and now sit closer to the body and to finish off the sheet-metal shuffle, the boys changed the shape of the roof rail. Even though Kenny’s team handle the body work, they have a deal with nearby Regenerated Rides who handle the paint work to the highest standard imaginable. In this case, they cover the KRS efforts with a silky-smooth coat of PPG Black Toner with the bumpers and grille sections being coated in bronze Cerekote. Jack Devey was called into apply the subtle pinstripe.
Open up either door and an acre of Burnt Brown and grey leather with basket weave inserts on the door trims, seats, steering wheel, dash and parcel tray. Interior Revolutions can take the credit for handling the stitch work after Kenny’s Rod Show created the custom dash using a ’55 Hudson gauge cluster filled with cool Classic Instrument dials. The seating is as far from 1951 as you can get. Up front, the big bench seat is now a part of history, with a pair of Jeep buckets occupying the same space, but doing a much nicer job in both comfort and visually. There’s now no rear seat to speak off, with the area remodelled with what appears to be a pair of suitcases. They are in fact cool storage units that are hinged for access. One of which hides the air suspension compressor. Different, huh?
114
115
Between Kenny’s Rod Shop and Interior Revolutions, the Hudson sports an interior that almost defies description. Almost. The steering wheel (and column for that matter) is a late model Corvette unit whist the custom centre console houses the Lokar shifter and Kenwood stereo head unit that was installed by Dicks Stereo. The same theme carries through into the boot area where the custom fuel cell is once again, made to look like a piece of luggage! From the custom interior light, to the black switches and all the cool custom touches, the insides of this Hudson are as good as custom cars get. Between Kenny’s Rod Shop and Interior Revolutions, the Hudson sports an interior that almost defies description. Almost.
Before the body got reacquainted with the rolling chassis for the last time, the factory ’51 frame had to have some major upgrades done. An independent front end by Art Morrison replaces the tired old Hudson front and offers dis brakes, rack and pinion steering and Fox coil-over shocks. Down the back, there’s a 4-link assembly with Ridetech air-suspension. Again, disc-brakes were added along with a big sway bar to help the big old Hudson handle a little better. The colour-coded wheels are by Schott and measure 19x8 inches on the front and 18x10 on the rear. You’ll just have to trust us that the rears aren’t plain old steel wheels hidden from sight!
116
117
The chassis wasn’t complete until the driveline was in and bolted up. What’s the last thing you’d expect to see powering such a cool sled like this one? A late model Ford diesel V8? Yeah, me too, but thankfully, the KRS crew fitted a suitably modified Viper V10 engine and six-speed manual trans into the chassis adding not just plenty of power, but also massive amounts of coolness in the process. Lifting the bonnet reveals a bitchin custom intake by Hogan’s and a fabricated air intake that flows from the moulded engine bay.
Kenny’s Rod Shop builds cars to drive. And Kenny proved it could do just that by cruising from the shop to the Goodguys Colorado show – a trip that totalled some 2500-miles.
In stark contrast to the body and bay colour, the V10 engine is coated to match the wheels and the bumpers. You can tick the Yes box for a huge amount of Wow factor! Essentially stock, the Viper engine relies on KRS fabricated stainless headers and dual, three-inch stainless exhaust system to dump the gases on its way to producing 525hp. The power is fed through the six-speed Tremec box to the Ford 9-inch diff that houses ‘cruising-friendly’ 3.9-gears and 31-spline axles.
In Hot Rodding circles, the Hudson isn’t exactly what you’d call a popular choice for a high-end custom build! But there are people out there that live by the old adage “dare to be different!”
118
119
With all of the components coming together as one incredible package, the Hudson was ready to hit the show scene. The KRS crew under the guidance of Kenny himself, spent 2019 showing the USA just what they are capable of building in house. To say the Hudson made a huge impact on the show circuit is a massive understatement. Lots of Best in Show, Top 5’s and more awards were gathered during that time. But it’s not just about impressing the judges. Kenny’s Rod Shop builds cars to drive. And Kenny proved it could do just that by cruising from the shop to the Goodguys Colorado show – a trip that totalled some 2500-miles. The trip included sunshine, rain and even a shattered windscreen, but it also provided plenty of smiles along the way. And that impresses everyone, including owner Mike who is now no doubt creating memories of his own. Cruise on…
