NLGI Golf Tournament
co-sponsored by Tiarco Chemical
The Omni Homestead Resort’s Old Course was completed in 1892 and is distinguished as home of the nation’s oldest first tee in continuous use. As the game has evolved over time, so too has the Old Course – updates by William S. Flynn and Rees Jones have kept pace with the times. Abundant fairway contouring gives most shots a side hill, uphill, or downhill lie to smallish greens, making approach shots interesting.
5:00 pm – 6:15 pm
Opening General Session:
• A ddress from President George Washington • Awards Presentation • Keynote Address - co-sponsored by Battenfeld Grease & Oil Graham Gow Axel Christiernsson ~ Retired Born and bred in Perth Scotland, Graham graduated with first class honors from the University of Edinburgh, 1970. After having met and married lovely Kristina, he moved to Sweden where he joined Axel Christiernsson. Since 1979,
he has specialized in lubricating grease. With more than 40 years of experience in lubricants and tribology, Gow was most recently the company’s international business development manager until his retirement in 2015. He has been recognized on numerous occasions for his contributions to grease literature including two NLGI Author’s awards, the Clarence E. Earle Memorial Award and the P.P.C. Gonsalves Memorial Award from the NLGI India Chapter. He was one of the “founding fathers” of the ELGI and was awarded the NLGI Fellow Award in recognition of “efforts as a tireless builder of bridges between the NLGI and ELGI”. Graham is currently writing a book called “Amazing Grease”, with tales from a 35 year (r)evolution in the grease industry. Join us as Graham shares an honest, lighthearted and hopefully enjoyable account of an exciting adventure through a maze in grease. This is not the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, only recollections of events, meetings, people and places throughout a long and sticky career in the grease business. And it’s not yet another technical presentation about “the famous grease” but a tribute to this truly amazing material and to all the last enthusiasts throughout our beloved industry all over the world.

You will see the damage the Resort experienced in 1901 and preview some of our many activities and offerings today. This is a theater power point presentation of approximately 45 minutes. Next, we’ll separate into two groups for our Gourmet Safari. The second group will have a short walking tour.*

Pastry Shop
We will then proceed to the Pastry Shop! Here we’ll have a meet & greet with the Pastry Chef. Chef will provide some introductions to the Hotels Signature Ovens & their history as well as an *The first group may have a property tour following their Safari.
explanation of the Bread Program. Bits of food, signature dishes & how to make cheesecake will be shared. You’ll also get to sample Cheesecake Lollipops!
Main Kitchen
Finally we head to the Main Kitchen to meet with the Chef! The Hotels Kitchen and its’ history will be explored, as well as explanation of the Dining Room process, it’s signature dishes & we’ll use some freshly baked bread to make Bruschetta, which you may sample.
Lastly, had enough food and history? We’ll all re-group for transportation to the Legendary Jefferson Pools at 2:00 pm in the Great Hall. It is said these magnificent, crystal-clear warm springs were discovered hundreds of years ago by Native Americans as they journeyed through the valley. But even outside of the legend, archeologists have found evidence of at least 9,000 years of human use of these local waters. The Jefferson Pools consist of two main buildings. In 1761, the octagonal Gentlemen’s Pool House was built for use by ladies and gentlemen alike, though at alternate times from early morning to late evenings. The circular, Ladies’ Pool House was constructed in 1836, at last giving ladies a pool of their own. The United States Geological Survey determined that these springs have a remarkably uniform rate of temperature and flow and are unaffected by changes of the seasons – their waters are natural body temperature all year and flow at the astounding rate of 1,700,000 gallons per day. The mineral content of the waters is so high that you float easily and so crystal clear you can read a book through them.

Destination: The Homestead Resort, Hot Springs, VA George Washington might have been the first presidential swimmer in the ancient mineral spring pools surrounding The Omni Homestead Resort, but the waters are named in honor of Thomas Jefferson, who relaxed in and around the Gentlemen’s Pool House up to three times a day for three weeks in 1818. The resort has been a retreat for a slew of other presidential and notable guests, including Thomas Edison, who built the hotel’s first electric power plant. It was also the site for a series of international conferences held during WWII that would eventually lead to an organization now known as the United Nations. Talk about history! Ten years before our country was founded, The Homestead opened its doors as a humble, 18-room lodge tucked away in the mountains. Over the past two and a half centuries, the resort has evolved, sharing milestones with America and memories with generations of travelers. Today, The Homestead is an iconic resort encompassing 2,300 acres with 483 guest rooms, numerous dining outlets and more than 30 recreational activities. The Homestead Resort also offers several wonderful dining options, from gourmet to casual on-the-course dining. Visit The Homestead Resort Area Activities for more information, or call the hotel concierge at 800-839-1766.
Airports and Ground Transportation
Hot Springs, VA is located 32 miles from the Roanoke International Airport (ROA) Virginia. Transportation from the Roanoke Airport can be arranged through the hotel’s Transportation Department by calling 800-8381766. Parking rates at the Resort are $10.00 per night (self park or valet). Please note: the route winds through mountains, hilly and winding roads. Drive time is approximately 1 and 1/2 hours.
Clothing and Packing Hints
June in Hot Springs, VA is usually mild, with highs in the low 80’s, and lows in the low 60’s. The resort is large and has had many additions through their 250 year history. Good walking shoes would be advisable. The Saturday and Sunday Evening Receptions are casual and will be outside.
We are keeping the Tuesday night Closing Extravaganza casual and fun again this year! There will be inside and outside seating areas, various food stations, interactive entertainment, magic, singing and more! If you were able to join us last year, I think you can attest this is an event you won’t want to miss!
