Case Study Architect

JEANNE GANG Jeanne Gang is an American architect, born 19 March 1964 in Belvidere, Illinois. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Illinois in 1986 and went on to get her Masters of Architecture with Distinction from Harvard Graduate School of Design in 1993. In 1997 she opened her own firm, Studio Gang Architects, in Chicago. Gang is known for her innovative approaches to environmental and ecological sustainability issues. She is best known for her Aqua Tower in downtown Chicago. It’s an 82-story mixed use skyscraper and was completed in 2010. At the time it was one of the tallest buildings in the world designed by a woman. Throughout her career, Gang has earned many honors and awards. One notable one is in 2016 she was named Woman Architect of the Year by the Architectural Review. In 2009, Gang’s firm received the Emporis Award for the best new skyscraper of the year. The Aqua Tower is in Chicago and was completed in 2009. James Loewenberg, who’s firm developed the project, invited Gang to design Aqua Tower in 2004. It’s her and her firms best known project and at the time of its completion, Aqua had one of Chicago’s largest green roofs. The building most notable feature is the curved concrete balcony overhangs. The balconies serve a dual purpose: they add strong visual interest and diffuse strong winds, allowing for balconies to be placed on all four sides of the skyscraper, a feat of skyscraper engineering.

The Vista Tower is currently under construction is Chicago, IL. It’s a residential and hotel building with 101 stories and it’s made up of three columns that move rhythmically in and out of place, creating a flowing appearance. On the ground level, the building creates a pedestrian connection between the Chicago Riverwalk and the nearby community park’s outdoor recreational facilities. It features a gradient of colored glass as a response to the various conditions of the frustum volumes, improving the overall building’s environmental performance.

The Solar Cave is in New York, NY on 40 Tenth Ave. It was built in 2019 and is an office building with the goal of LEED Gold sustainability. The building explores how shaping architecture in response to solar access can expand its potential to have a positive impact on its environment. The gem-like façade also allows the building to benefit the important public green space of the High Line. The carved curtain wall not only blocks sun glare and heat gain but also creates dynamic corner workspaces.

The Writers Theatre is in Glencoe, IL and was built in 2016. Its intended to bring people together across boundaries and is LEED Gold Certified. The design was inspired by the inn-yard theaters of the early modern period of English drama, which brought together all social classes with live performance. The building is organized as a village-like cluster that surrounds a central hub. It features two performance spaces: A main stage seating 250 and a smaller black box venue seating 99. Its also has great timber trusses with lighter wood lattice supporting its second- floor canopy walk. In good weather, the lobby can open to the adjacent Woman’s Library Club Park.

E1 Poster This was your first project working with our case study architect. In this poster we were asked to introduce them and their work. This poster talks about Jeanne Gang and four of her works: The Aqua Tower, The Vista Tower, The Solar Cave, and The Writers Theatre.

E2 Analyzing Images In this project, we were asked to identify different elements of composition in images of our architects building. The green is highlighting the trees that are used to frame the building. The black lines show the perspective lines that draw the line up to the top of the building. The red grid is showing the rule of thirds being used in the framing of the picture.

E3 Mood Board This project aimed to capture the mood and essence of our architects work.

Chicago and San Francisco 2003 - Current Fluid, Blocky, Twisted, Reflective, and Repetitive

I felt that Jeanne Gangs buildings were fluid, blocky, twisted, reflective, and repetitive. I tried to capture this by finding examples of other objects that displayed those features.

E4 Photo Assemblage In this project we were asked to recreate an image of our architects building using textures or objects. Below is the source image used. The goal of the project was to be able to turn off the source image and still be able to make out the image.

E5 Montage For this project we were asked to go into downtown Scranton and take a picture of building then place a building from our architect onto that picture. Below are the two images used in creating the montage.

E6 Flat Render The goal of this project was to recreate the source image of a building from our architect using the flat render technique. Below is the image used in the flat render.

AE7 Archi Portrait

This project was the first one done after transitioning into online learning. We were asked to create a portrait of our architect using their works. During the process of creating the archi portrait I used AutoCAD, Illustrator, and Photoshop to achieve the final product.

Photo Rendering

A1 Photographing Models This was the first project we had in Digital Media. It was meant to introduce us to InDesign. We were asked to take 25 different pictures of another persons model. Highlighted are the 2 pictures that I chose to move forward with.

A2 Photo Rendering In this project we were asked to practice using Photoshop by overlaying 3 different textures onto one of the pictures taken for the last assignment. I revised this project slightly by touching up the dirty background and making it appear clean.

A3 Entourage As a continuation of the last project we were asked to add on to the last assignment and add entourage to the rendering. I revised this project by making the figures clearer, adding shadows to the figures, and touching up the background.

A3 Entourage In addition to the first part of the project, we added a second model . We were asked to chose a second picture from the 25 taken in the first assignment. Then add 3 textures and entourage to this picture as well. I revised this project by making the figures clearer and touching up the background.

A4 Hybrid Rendering For this project we were asked to place the renderings we made before into a background. The angle I chose for this picture wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the best for placing it in a setting so I went back and adjusted the angle of the grass and trees to make the placement more believable.

A6 Hybrid Collage Rendering In this project we were asked to create a digital magazine type collage of our models, creating a scene. I revised this project by cleaning up the people and background as well as adding depth to the line work model by using shadows.

Tessellation

AE8 Tess. Site Plan This project was connected to the tessellation studio projects we were currently working on. The goal was to imagine the tessellation as a building and place it in a site plan. I imagined this tessellation as maybe an aquarium on the beach with smaller related buildings around it. I used the Photoshop brush tool to achieve the textures on the ground and used illustrator to create the buildings and tessellations,

AE9 Collage Rendering This was a 30+ day project for studio. We had to freehand draw a building and an object in either one point or two point each day. Then add color to the drawings using Photoshop. This semester I was also taking a freehand drawing class, so I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t struggle too much with the freehand drawing part of the assignment. I struggled more with finding a style that I wanted to render the drawings in. I decided to go with color renders rather than realistic rendering.

AE10 Layered Map This project was also connected to the tessellation studio projects. We were asked to map out how we created the model for studio. I chose to draw the flattened individual tessellation piece then place them together for the background then place the model on top.

AE11 Tess. in Context This project was meant to show the final tessellation studio model in a realistic environment. I felt this model would work really well on the beach, where the tide could come in and change the experience of the structure. I believe this project was also meant to show the progression on your skills from the beginning of the semester.

AE12 Tess. Section + Facade For this tessellation project we were asked to imagine what our tessellations would look like as building fronts. I imagined these as funky, colorful apartment buildings in a young neighborhood.

AE12 Tess. Section + Facade This set of tessellations was a more abstract version of the color version. The entourage were meant to help us understand the scale of the tessellations and how people would interact with them.

Shadow Box

A5 Plan + Section This was the first use of Auto-CAD in our digital media class. The goal was to introduce us to the program by asking us to create a plan and section of your studio shadow box model. I was first introduced to Auto-CAD in a high school class, so this was not my first use of the program. Due to my experience with the program I was able to complete this project with minimal issues.
