INTRODUCTION: WHAT IS A PROXY? The definition of a proxy as they concern us is a web page that allows users to access websites that are restricted by the user’s network administrator. Proxies are commonly used for several reasons: security, load balancing, data caching in order to reduce bandwidth demands, and censorship or filtering.
Filtering proxies insulate you from objectionable elements of webpages such as cookies, ad banners, dynamic content like Javascript, Java Applets and ActiveX controls. Some anonymous proxies encrypt your Web communications, protecting you from routine monitoring or even dedicated surveillance. We are going to be creating proxies that filter websites, and provide the user with the capability to anonymously surf the web. Don’t let this technical jargon confuse you, it’s really very simple!
WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO USE A PROXY? The main reason people want to use proxies is because they allow you to access blocked sites. Many people at work or at school, love to conquer their boredom by browsing the internet. However the
network administrators of such places do not want their students or employees looking at their friends MySpace pages all day. Many of these networks have online gaming sites blocked and even certain forums and webpages are blocked due to their content. Another reason people want to use proxies is because their government has imposed restrictions on internet use. Countries such as China and Iran are good examples of this. Their governments are very rigid when it comes to censorship.
HOW CAN I MAKE MONEY WITH PROXIES? Proxy owners earn money by monetizing the traffic that is drawn to their proxy. I’m going to show
you how to do this using Google Adsense contextual ads and Adversal pop-unders. You can also make money by selling advertising space on your proxy to other proxy owners or anyone with a website or product that targets proxy users in general. The main ingredient to any profitable website is traffic. You must have traffic in order to make money. I’m going to be going over some very powerful traffic generation strategies with you so that your traffic will never go lacking.
IS PROXY OWNERSHIP A SUITABLE BUSINESS MODEL? The nature of network administrators allows proxy ownership to be a very viable business model. Administrators are constantly monitoring their user’s online activity, if a certain proxy becomes too noticeable the network admin will block it from being used on their network. This creates a constant demand for new proxies. More proxies are blocked everyday, and more new ones are created. However proxies are blocked faster than we can make them, so the demand for new ones is very high. With mastery of my proxy creation process, you will be able to create a new proxy within 30 minutes to an hour.
THE PROXY CREATION PROCESS Proxy creation will at first seemingly highly technical is actually an extremely simple process. It can be reduced down to the following steps.
Step 1 – Register A Domain Step 2 - Acquire Proxy Hosting Step 3 – Setup your Domain Step 4 – Code Your Proxy Step 5 – Upload Your Proxy To Your Host Step 6 – Register with Adsense and Adversal Step 7 – Infuse Advertisements Into Your Proxy Step 8 – Generate Traffic Step 9 – Make Money!!
Now let’s take an in-depth look at each individual step.
STEP 1 - REGISTERING A DOMAIN NAME Registering your first domain name is quite easy, it’s mostly point and click. For this example I’m going to be using www.GoDaddy.Com . However the process is very similar for all the other domain name registrars. First open your web browser and go to GoDaddy.Com.
Now type in your projected proxy name into the domain name search bar, and click “GO”:
I suggest you use .info domain names, as these are only $0.99 at the time of this writing. Even if the price goes up they will not be more than $3 or $4.
If your projected domain name is available you should see something like this:
Now go ahead and click continue at the bottom.
Next GoDaddy will throw all kinds of advertisements in your face about how important it
is that you need to register a .net and .com under the same domain name. However we are unconcerned with these sales pitches. Continue on and setup a GoDaddy account. Don’t forget write down your login number and password for later use.
After creating an account you will see a screen called registration and checkout options. Make sure that you register your domain for 1 year, check manual auto renew protection, and leave your domain uncertified.
Since this is your first proxy you don’t want to sink too much cash into a long registration length. You also want to be able to choose if you want to renew or not. Finally domain name certification is really an unnecessary feature for our proxies.
Now make sure you choose quick checkout so you won’t be bombarded with more needless advertisements:
Click continue and you should reach a screen like this one:
Scroll down and click the
button.
And that’s all there is to Step 1!!
STEP 2 – ACQUIRE PROXY HOSTING
There are tons of hosting companies out there, but many of them do not allow proxy websites on their servers. I suggest that you go to Google and look up some of these hosts. For this guide I’m going to assume that you are using them a host with the C-Panel web-interface. However if you choose a different host the process is very similar. When choosing hosting a few factors come into play. The host must support PHP. You are going to want hosting with a large amount of available bandwidth, which is a measurement of data transfer. Web space
is not that important, because the proxy website itself will not take up that much space on your host’s hard drive. 1GB is more than enough to hold a large network of proxies. The last factor to take into consideration is the amount of add-on domains that are allowed. If you plan on running more than one proxy, you are going to want a host who allows addon domains. You need to register your hosting with the same domain name that you just created at GoDaddy. Once you have registered for hosting you need to wait on an email with your account information. Once you have received it you are ready to go to step 3.
STEP 3 – SETTING UP YOUR DOMAIN. Now this email is vital. I suggest that you save it to your hard drive for future reference. The email will contain various information. You need to take note of the following: • Your hosting account user name • Your hosting account password
• Your nameserver addresses. The nameservers are vital to this step. Without having your domain using the correct nameservers, your domain will not point to your host’s server.
Now with the above information in hand you need to go back to GoDaddy. Once on their page again you need to log into your account with your customer number and password that you received in Step 1:
Now you need to click on “My Account”:
Once you are logged in you will see the personalized welcome page with your full name on it. Next you are going to click on “Manage Domains� under the My Products box:
Now you should see a screen like this:
Now check the checkbox next to your newly registered domain name. With the box checked click
on:
in the top navigation bar.
Now click on “Custom Nameservers� in the Set Nameservers box:
Now fill in the nameservers you received in your new account information email from your host:
Click Ok, and that finishes Step 3. STEP 4 – CODE YOUR PROXY This step requires editing of HTML and PHP code. This may sound highly technical but I can assure that this will be a breeze. You could do this in Windows Notepad, however I suggest that you download the free text editor TextPad which is more advanced than Notepad. With its color coding feature it makes coding our proxies easy as pie. TextPad can be found here: http://www.textpad.com/ Now you are going to need a template for your proxy. We are going to be using those available from freeproxytemplates.com. Access them at this address: http://www.freeproxytemplates.com/templates-list/
For this ebook I’m going to show you how to code PHPproxy Template #6. The process for coding the other templates is extremely similar to this one. Click on PHPproxy Template #6, and download it. The download link is hard to notice, but it is under the Google ads immediately under the template screenshot. It is going to download as a zip file. Once you have the zip file on your computer extract it to a separate folder named after your proxy domain name. You should have the following files: config.php, index.inc.php, index.php, style.css, topsites.php, and an image folder. Next load open config.php with TextPad. You should get this:
Now you need to start editing the PHP code. Start at the top and work your way down.
First edit your website info settings:
Replace “YourProxy.com� with your newly registered proxy domain. Make sure you leave
FreeProxyTemplates.com text intact, as this gives proper credit to the template designers.
Next edit your Meta Settings:
Again, replace “YourProxy.com” with your newly registered proxy domain. Do not edit the keywords.
Next edit your Website Layout Title:
Replace “your proxy” appropriately. If you have a domain which can be split into two words, such as “super-proxy.info”, type Super before the <span> tag, and Proxy in between <span class=”gray”>… </span>. This span tag will change the color of the text that is housed within to gray. If your domain is
just one word just put the text before the <span> tag.
Next, you need to edit your description:
You know the drill by now; just replace â&#x20AC;&#x153;YourProxy.comâ&#x20AC;? with your actual domain name.
Finally the Copyright code must be edited:
I hate to be redundant, but all you need to do is replace yoursite.com and YourProxy.com with your new domain. Do not worry about the ad codes just yet. We are going to edit those a bit later. That completes step 4.
STEP 5 – UPLOAD YOUR PROXY TO YOUR HOST
This step requires another software program. In order to upload files to your host, you could do it via the web(HTTP), however most HTTP file transfer managers, such as the one that comes with your Cpanel hosting, are quite cumbersome. We are going to be using the File Transfer Protocol, a.k.a FTP, to upload our files. In order to use FTP you need an FTP client, which is a fancy word for FTP software. Some of these clients cost money; however we are going to be using SmartFTP, which is completely free. Head on over to http://www.smartftp.com/ and download it.
Now when you first run SmartFTP you are going to have to tell it how it can access your web host. It will give you this dialog box:
Make sure that your protocol is set to “Normal FTP” and your port number is “21”
For the host tab, enter your domain name: www.proxy-1234.info or whatever it may be. Make sure to put the “www” in there.
Leave the path tab blank. Also leave the login type as Username and Password.
Your username and password are the same thing that your host sent you in your new account information email. Hopefully you wrote them down or saved the email.
Click on the
button.
After a few seconds it should log you in. Now you are only interested in the public_html folder, double click on it:
Once you are in the public_html folder, minimize SmartFTP and open up the your proxy folder on your computer with the edited config.php in it. Now go back into SmartFTP and drag the entire contents of your proxy folder into your public_html folder. The easiest way to do this is to resize your windows, and put them next to each other:
After the files have been uploaded, go to your browser and type your domain name into the address bar. Your proxy should come up, looking like this but with your domain name:
It is important that you do not click on any of the Google ads. That completes this step. You are now ready forâ&#x20AC;Ś.
STEP 6 – REGISTERING WITH GOOGLE ADSENSE AND ADVERSAL
Now these two programs require you to have an actual website before they will let you register. That’s why you must upload to your web server first.
Head on over to http://www.google.com/adsense and register. Google will contact you in 2 to 3 days with your account information.
Now after you have registered with Adsense register with Adversal: http://www.adversal.com/ You are going to need a Paypal account for this. Head on over to www.paypal.com and set up your
account. They’re free to setup and only take a few minutes.
STEP 7 – INFUSE ADVERTISEMENTS INTO YOUR PROXY Now after receiving your Google Adsense application approval, you are going to be able to log into your Adsense account. We are interested in your Adsense Publisher ID Number. You need it in order to earn money from the ads that are displayed on your proxy. Here’s how you find your Adsense Publisher ID.
Go to http://www.google.com/adsense/ and login. In the top left corner click on “Adsense Setup”:
Now click on “Adsense for Content”:
Now click on “Single Page” which is next to “Wizard”:
Now scroll all the way down to the bottom to the “Get Ad Code” screen:
This is your Adsense Publisher ID Number:
Of course yours will be different numbers than mine. I wouldn’t put the above number on any of your pages, seeing as I would get paid instead of you. Don’t worry about the “pub-“ before the number, either copy and paste and save it in a text file or write down your Publisher ID Number somewhere.
Now to infuse your Adsense ID into your proxy so that you get paid for the click s the ads receive. Open up the recently edited config.php in TextPad. Remember that you have it in your proxy folder on your computer.
Scroll down to the “AdCode Settings”
Replace:
With your Publisher ID that you just got from Google. Leave the “pub-“ in there otherwise it won’t work. Just copy and paste your number where the “xxx’s” are.
Now there are 2 more Adsense codes in your config.php file. Replace the â&#x20AC;&#x153;pub-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxâ&#x20AC;? with your actual Adsense ID number in those other two adsense codes as well. Now save your config.php file in your proxy folder.
Moving on to Adversal. First you need to log into your Adversal account at http://www.adversal.com/
As a side note, Adversal ads are not like Adsense ads. Adversal uses pop-unders, which are hard to block with software. It will work like this: A user types a website into your proxy that he wants to browse. When he clicks on a link on the proxified webpage, another website will open up under his browser. When he is finished surfing and closes his browser window he will see the pop-under website.
Pop-unders do not frustrate the user like pop-ups because they do not interrupt the users browsing, and the user only seeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s them when he either closes or minimizes his browser.
Now back to the instructions. Once logged into Adversal, the top of your page should look like this:
Click on:
in the navigation bar.
You should get something like this:
Enter your website URL. URL is Uniform Resource Location which is just a fancy way of saying web address. Choose 2 Categories for your website. Adversal’s categories are pretty limited, but I suggest for your Proxy you choose “Computers” and “Entertainment.” These choices will determine what kind of ads your visitors see. You could choose any of the other one’s if you wish.
When you are done click:
After a second or two depending on how fast your internet connection is you should see your new website appear under the â&#x20AC;&#x153;My Websitesâ&#x20AC;? category:
Now click on
in the top navigation bar.
You’ll now see this page:
Make sure that you are getting code for your proxy domain, and that you turn Entry Pop to “Off”. Go ahead and click
again.
Your code will appear below as follows:
Copy this code into a blank text file or you can just minimize your browser window.
Ok the next step is to backup the index.php file in your proxy folder. So make a copy of it and stick the copy in another folder. Now you need to open up your index.php file in TextPad. You should get this screen:
Scroll down until you see this:
If you can’t find that you need to click on Search in TextPad’s top bar. Then click Find, and type this into the “Find What” tab: <!-- Begin Publisher Code -->. Click
and it will take you right to it.
All you need to do is highlight the stock Adversal code and paste your Adversal code over it:
Make sure that you do not highlight the { ‘; } You need this to stay, otherwise it will screw up your PHP. Here’s a closer look at what I’m talking about:
Notice that I did not highlight the { ‘; }.
Now save your index.php file. Now open up SmartFTP again, this time it should log in automatically into your web server, otherwise just redo what I explained earlier about logging in via SmartFTP. Once in your public_html folder drag and drop the newly ad infused config.php and index.php files into the folder.
Using your proxy, type in a website such as www.myspace.com . Browse the site and make sure
that an Adversal ad pop’s under your browser. If everything is good, you’re OK! If not make sure to check back over your PHP to make sure that you didn’t overwrite any { ;’ }. This is the most common mistake.
That completes this step. Only one more to go before you’re seeing some cash!!
STEP 8 – GENERATE TRAFFIC
There are several ways to generate traffic to your new proxy. The first way to do it is through Proxy Topsite Submissions. Proxy Topsites are listing of proxies in order of popularity. As a proxy gets more popular its more likely that it will be banned by
observant network admins. Users of these Proxy Topsites browse through the listing looking for fresh proxies. So often those proxies at the bottom of the list will receive traffic. There are hundreds of proxy topsites out there on the web. In order to get your proxy included in the listing you are going to have to submit your site to the topsite itself. This is usually done by writing a small eye catching one sentence title line, followed by a two to three sentence description. You are going to need an email address to enter into the proxy topsites forms as well.
Submitting to each site manually can be very boring and time consuming. A savvy webmaster has come up with a script that allows you to submit to 121 topsites at the press of a single button. This tool
is currently free to use, so I suggest you take advantage of it, the URL is: http://www.freeproxysubmit.com/ Make sure to donate a dollar or two to this webmaster as his tool saves a lot of time and headache. Another way to generate traffic is through banner exchange with other proxy owners. I suggest you seek out other proxy owners on the Digital Point forums: http://forums.digitalpoint.com . Check out the “Freebies” section under “Buy,Sell, and Trade” as many proxy owners will offer free link exchange. There is also a Link Exchange forum on there as well. Yet another powerful method of traffic generation is by using proxy email lists. Some clever proxy owner somewhere thought it would be a novel idea to get the email addresses of his users, so that he could email them new proxies. Proxy email list
owners are always looking for new proxies that they can put in their emails. The only downside to this is, that some will charge for this service. However others will include your site(s) in an email for free. These proxy email list owners can be found on Digital Point as well. The last method of generating traffic that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m going to go over is using a site called Proxy.org: http://www.proxy.org/ This site gets tons of hits from people looking for new proxies. Its basically the Mecca of the proxy world. You can list your proxy on here for free, however for more traffic you can buy a bolded listing, or a top listing, or even a banner on the site. The only thing is the basic bolded listings start at $20 per month, and the banner listing can cost upwards of $200 per month. However with a banner
listing you can expect tens of thousands of visitors to your proxy nearly everyday, so you would easily recoup that initial investment in a few days to a few weeks. STEP 9 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; MAKE MONEY!!!
This is the easiest step there is as it requires no effort. After traffic starts pouring into your proxy, you WILL make money from Adsense and Adversal. If you successfully launch your first proxy and you start to see it make $3 per day from Adsense and Adversal, why not take your knowledge and launch 9 more proxies. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure you can do the math. 10 proxies making $3 per day each is $30 per day, which is an extra $900 per month stashed in your pocket. Now imagine having 50 proxies or 100 or even 1000!!!
Massive proxy network construction is where the real money is at. Taking what you have learned here, you can build as many proxies as you wish. The only limiting factor is time. I try to build at least 1 new proxy per day, some days I go on building spreeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and make 10 or more. Another way to make money is by creating your own proxy mailing list. You can do this using autoresponders. An indepth tutorial on this aspect is beyond the scope of this ebook, however there are many free resources available on the subject. The only thing standing between you and them is a Google search. Sometimes you need quick cash, and you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afford to wait on your next Adsense and Adversal payments to come in. When this happens you can make a quick profit from proxies by selling the proxy
site itself. What you would do is create a new proxy. Get some traffic flowing to it, thereby getting some Adsense clicks and Adversal impressions netting some revenue. Then after about a week or so, list the entire website for sale on Digital Point. Don’t forget to mention the fact that the proxy for sale already has traffic and revenue. This fact makes the site easier to sell. You are going to need to post some screenshots of your Adsense and Adversal earnings, as well as your traffic stats. Your traffic stats can be found on your webhost’s control panel. Also you could create a huge network of 25 – 100 proxies, get some traffic and revenue to it, and then sell the entire network at one time. Doing this will net you even more profit. An established proxy
network is going to save the buyer a lot of time, and make him/her a lot of money.
