The first thing you want to do when getting into the domain sales business, is find a good Internet domain registration site. They charge a reasonable fee per registered domain, usually under $10.00. Some even give discounts for bulk registration. You also want to find out how much it will cost you to transfer the domain name, as well as how soon after your registration this transfer can take place. You don’t want to register a domain and find try to sell and transfer only to find out that you may have to keep it in your name for say 90 days before you are allowed to make changes to ownership of the account. Do your research and make sure you are registering the domain with a site that also offers many other domain related services, such as email, site builders, hosting, blogs creation and any other extra services. You may also want to consider registering not just the .com, but the .net, .info and maybe .org depending on the domain name. Many registrars offer huge discounts for these additional registrations. The peripherals like web hosting and email are some of the things you can offer your potential buyers when you list your domain name for sale. These are very inexpensive and the cost can be tacked onto the price you set for your domain name. The price will be very important since you are not going into business to loose money, so

what you sell the name for should cover the cost of registering the name as well as any extras. Be careful not to get too carried away with the extras, you do not want to go beyond say $20, for reasons that we will go into later. Make sure you also take advantage of any free listing features that EBay has to offer. Some of them like a picture, are valuable resources that could help make your listing really stand out, and the “return on investment” is high. Also every so often EBay offers discounts on featured listings so if you can get this discount use it.

1.PICK THE RIGHT NAME: What’s in a name? Everything! Your ability to sell you domain name will hinge upon how clever and useful a name you can get. The domain name itself, is the far and away the most important element to your success on EBay. The best selling domain names are not necessarily very difficult to come up with. The hard part is finding a name that will be in great demand. The key to domain names is a

name that has well used keywords within the name itself, so that the appeal is obvious. If you search completed listings on EBay, You will find that the domain names that sold for a good price had keywords within the name. There was a recent sale for over $4,000, and this particular domain name had a very popular keyword in its name. Others that were not as well thought out either did not sell or sold for less than what it might cost to register the name. Examples of keywords would be things like wedding, rings, baby, diamond‌the list is endless. These are words that people use in searches all the time, so having a domain name with a word like this could be really valuable, and having one with more than one of these keywords is phenomenal. If you let your potential customers know that using a domain name with the search word/term in it and they will be guaranteed to get high visibility and tons of traffic via the search engines, you will be letting them know just how valuable what you are selling is. Don’t try and go with a current trend or celebrity name, these names are not the best sellers. The really good ones are usually owned by the celebrity or their fan club, so don’t fall into the trap of trying to cash in on the recent celebrity to go to rehab or doing something taboo. This will not be money well spent, search the completed listings and you will see countless of these domains unsold. The key is having a name that has no time limit and does not depend on the popularity of some new or cyclical trend. You will have a hard time trying to predict where trends are going. A highly popular search term or word will carry you a long way. 2. USE THE DOMAIN NAME IN TITLE:

You want to use the name of the domain in your title or description, this lets potential bidders know what they are about to bid on. The reason for this is that you want your potential buyers, some of whom only scan through title and subtitle, to know that you have something of value. This will also draw them into the description to see what other offers you have or what you might be giving with the domain name. The domain name is the primary item for sale, so if you have picked well, having the name boldly displayed should draw people into your auction. Not using the name in the auction title can sometimes be a sign that the name for sale is low rated, and so you want to get people to look at your description and maybe want to buy it for the extras and not really because the domain name is a must have. When you have “gold for sale, would you hide that? The answer is no. So if you have come up with a really good domain name, you want to be sure that that is the first thing people in the market for a domain name see. Your EBay title is you first impression, use it well, and it will serve you well. Misuse it and it will cost you dearly.

3. USE A PICTURE AND SUBTITLE: In your subtitle be sure to mention that you have other highly sought after domain names for sale. This where you will pitch the other .net, .org or whatever other names you registered. The reason you use this subtitle this way for one it will allow the people who may loose out in the bidding war over your main domain name, the opportunity to see what other great names you have and set you up for more sales.

There is also the prospect of looking like an expert because you have more than one item for sale. It allows for the impression that you do this all the time, and that this is just another one of your sales. However if you are new on EBay and don’t have any feedback, you will have to really vamp up your sales pitch in the description. The picture is not necessary, but a really catchy picture would be a great way to get added attention. Make the picture as relevant to you domain name as possible. You have heard that a picture is worth a thousand words, well that is true. Use at least one picture the first picture is free, so make the most of it. You will get a good return from this, and it is well worth the effort of adding one to your listing. This is also where you can add that you are offering the winning bidder free software, templates or whatever other website freebies you can come up with. The more you can offer the better . You will be creating a domain name package that will stand out form the competitors who usually do not see the value of inexpensive items that can be very important to drawing people into your listing. When searches are conducted don’t forget that you will have a better chance of showing up during searches for software as well.

4.MAKE THE DOMAIN DESCRIPTION COUNT This is where you get to pitch about your domain name. You will tell all your potential bidders how you have a potential gold mine for sale. You will have the chance to express the value of your domain name to whatever industry it is relevant to. So if for example you have a name for the jewelry industry, you will let them know how vital the name is in the jewelry industry. How when searches are conducted on search engines regarding jewelry, the domain name is one of the most used search words or terms, and that will allow them to gain more visibility for their site and business.

Here is also where you will be making offers for free or low cost peripherals being offered with your domain name. You will also be making sure that you use this area to let bidders know about you’re transfer rate and how soon that transfer will take place after payment is received. What forms of payment you accept, and how soon you want payment made after end of bid, along with any other business matters. You can also offer to transfer the domain for free, since most good sites will give you this with the purchase of a domain name. The main thing is that you use the description well. Do not put too much information so that the bidders feel as if they are required to read an essay. Make the important points stand out by being as brief as possible. Include enough information to keep people interested, but not too much that they get bored reading. You want to be sure they see what wonderful freebies are included incase they need additional incentives to keep bidding.

5. OFFER FREE HOSTING AND EMAIL Some registrars have free hosting and email, this is where the research counts. If you have done your research you will have found a site that has this offer, so you will register the domain name with them and add the free hosting and email. Once you have your listing, you will make sure you add this as part of the description. Do not forget to mention that these add on features are only transferable if the winning bidder stays with the same registrar that you are getting the service from. Hosting can be really expensive, so when you find a place(and they are out there) that offers free hosting, grab at the chance to offer it with your listing. This alone can make a listing saleable. The value of free hosting should not be underestimated, it could be the thing that makes your listing stand out from all the others, so it is well worth it

especially if you can get it for free, or for little cost and add the cost to the listing price. It is important to be sure and check what the criteria is for the free hosting and email. If there a major restrictions be sure and mention at least the fact that the restrictions exist, even if you don’t get into the specifics of what they are. The bottom line is the winner of the bid may want to move the name to their own registrar, and this will negate the free stuff that is only applicable if they stay with the site you registered with. Look into the email too and be sure to give as much detail as you can without once again getting too bogged down with details. Like if its 1 email address and 25MB storage, or whatever the basic detail are. You might also choose to upgrade this option for free if the name sells over a certain amount. The fees are very reasonable so lets say the name sells for over $1,000 you might offer to upgrade to a 5 email address with 1000MB storage which will cost $20.00/year. Don’t forget that if some of these services are being billed on a yearly or every couple years, be sure to say how long the length of this service is paid for, so that your bidders are aware of what they are getting. You do not want to get a reputation for offering services that people believe are they never have to pay for and then get billed for later. As impossible as this seems, when selling on EBay sometimes you have to get really specific, this does not require endless info, just say for example free email for 2 years or whatever the offer is.

6. OFFER FREE SOFTWARE AND TEMPLATES You can get relatively inexpensive software from different sites out there, even on EBay. The great thing about this is that you can translate this into added bids. The value of freebies is underestimated. You may get only one more bidder, but that could be the difference

between a high price sale or a sale that starts and stops at the offering price. All it takes to create a bidding war is more than one person interested in what you are auctioning. The offer of free software and templates will help your listing stand out. Most other domain sellers are usually just selling the domain name and nothing else. Now you come in with a great name, and as if that was not enough to generate interest you are throwing in some added incentives, that will bring in further interest from bidders looking for free stuff. This software should in some way be relevant to either website creation or the industry that would be most relevant to your domain name. So perhaps if it a retail industry name, you may be able to get inventory tracking software for example. Searches on EBay are also conducted based on what is in the title and description. So you have the word “Free” added to your listing and this will draw in other bidders that may not have otherwise have seen your listing. This is a powerful way of generating added interest to you’re domain name. This could essentially bring in hundreds more people to your listing, and of those hundreds perhaps two or three will be interested. Once again it is important to realize that all it takes is two or three bidders fighting for your domain name to have a bidding war on your hands.

7. MAKE YOU’RE LISTING FEATURED Now the featured listings will cost you money, but if you think you have a name that will be of great interest and has the ability to make thousands of dollars, then it will be worth this expense. The other thing is that should you have other listings you can let them all ride on the back of your featured listing.

The idea behind having a featured listing is that it gets top billing when a search is done for domain names. That is to say your listing along with all the other featured listings will be one of the first ones to come up on the home page of the domain name listings. This concept can be very helpful when there are a lot of listings, since it gives your priority. You want this because most bidders will not go beyond about two or three pages in each category of items they are looking for. Be mindful that as other newer listings come up that are also featured, you’re listing may get bumped down, this is why the added features and maybe highlighting your listing may help, but is not as important. Another point is that at some point when a bidder is searching, they can rearrange the listings so the newest ones come up first or the ones nearly ending. Featured listings helps keep your newly listed domain around the first page or so(depending on the number of featured listings) when the search is for newly listed, and when it is almost closing and the search is for ending soonest it should do the same.

8.CROSS PROMOTE YOUR LISTINGS Cross promotion is important because it allows you to pitch all your goods to buyers looking at any one of your sales. This helps make your listings stand out in several categories. The assumption is that someone looking for one of the other items you are selling is quite likely to look at another item you are selling if there is a convenient link to that item. Now imagine you are selling a domain name for the retail industry and you also happen to have a wholesale lot of clothing for sale. It is very likely that the person buying or looking at your wholesale lot could also be in the market for a domain name. This is a great way to draw them into your domain name sale.

Here is the thing, you could also create a listing for the domain name in the wholesale clothing category if the name was relevant. The people in the market for wholesale clothing are also likely to appreciate a good name for their online business. Take full advantage of the fact that other domain name sellers are most likely not listing in this category, and you may be able to get some really good bidders come form a cross category that is very relevant to the domain name you are trying to sell.

9. PROVIDE A LIST OF PRODUCT SOURCES Now that you have people viewing your listing grab their attention. You could compile a list of maybe 10-20 suppliers who provide whatever the product is that will be sold through the website of the domain name you are offering. This is another value added freebie that could be the best “magnet to your listing. You may even get people bidding on you domain name mainly to get their hands on your suppliers list. Another way you could use this list, is to offer it up for sale, and use that listing to draw in more bidders to the domain name. The key is that they may want the list, but if they have the chance to get a really valuable domain name, software, hosting and whatever other freebies you are offering, they are more likely to bid on the domain name. The beauty of it is that you may end up selling some copies of the list outside of the give away with the domain. One thing that may keep some people away from getting into the business could be the lack of good wholesale sources for product. You can provide that and to compile this list may just take some of your time. The idea here is that you are going into the domain name business and in order to do that you have to do some leg work before and set yourself up for success.

10. SET RIGHT PRICE Last but definitely not least make sure you have a starting price that is not ridiculous. You could start at $1 and put a reserve, but this is an additional cost for listing,. You want to make sure that the money you spend is value adding. You would be better off setting the price at $19.99 and no reserve, this will not cost you money, and assuming you followed the advise from earlier you did not spend more than $20 on this domain registration and any extras you are “throwing” into the deal. The more valuable your domain name, the easier it is to set a low price, because you know the name alone will draw in buyers and you will make a great deal of money on the sale. This therefore means that you can start at $1 and have no reserve and you will make your money had over fist. The example mentioned earlier had a listing price of $1 and no reserve, but the name was so valuable, that 19 bids and $4,000 dollars later, they did not loose money. Setting too high a price will put buyer off. Many people think they can come up with really good domain names themselves, so they will not even bother to look at a listing with say a $150.00 starting price. However these same people will get into a bidding war with others and end up paying well over that amount. So the idea is to attract people to your listing based on the many reasons including the reasonable price. There plenty of unsold domain names where the starting price is completely unrealistic. The key is not giving it away, but also not over inflating its importance. You know the value of the domain is based on what others are willing to pay for it. The key is drawing in enough people who want to purchase your domain name and getting them to “fight” each other over it. This is truly the key to getting a good price.

The bottom line is you are going to create a package deal. Everything about this package is going to draw in valuable bidders. Each idea has the potential to draw in a bidder and that will give you 10 bidders, well that is more than you need to get a really good sale going on. You want more than one interested party. And each one has their reason for wanting your package deal. You get a really good domain name, make your description informative. Add on some freebies and goodies that industry relevant, and you have an invaluable product . This will stand out since just about all the other listings on domain names are just the name for sale. Get creative and draw in customers form other sections with your other listings or listing the domain name in those sections.
