ontana wildlife artist Adam Smith began preparing for his upcoming solo showcase at Trailside Galleries last November. The painstaking detail that the young artist puts into each realistic painting means the process is slow and steady. And for this show, Smith will present three major works, each requiring up to a month to complete. This latest grouping by the 29-year-old will include both North American big game animals and possibly a few African subjects as well. All works will be sold by draw on Saturday, September 14. “This is the first time I’ll have a large body of work shown together. It’s rare for me, because I don’t paint that fast, but the end result is definitely worth it,” remarks Smith. Acrylic paintings in a range of sizes will be
available coupled with a few new subjects for the artist such as the yellow-headed blackbird and the red-winged blackbird. These new designs represent ideas that have been brewing in Smith’s head for a while. “It’s always fun to try new subjects and new challenges,” he acknowledges. “You learn something from the last painting and bring it to the new.” An enthusiastic traveler and explorer, Smith says the best part of his profession is going out and gathering reference material. Research trips have taken him to Utah, Alaska, Africa, and countless national parks in between in his quest to realistically capture his subjects in their natural habitat. Gaining a reputation for his detailed, realistic paintings of big game animals, Smith
is particularly pleased with the recently completed snow scene of a cougar titled Closing In. “The piece was labor-intensive with all the pine needles,” he notes. While his father, well-known wildlife artist Daniel Smith, is revered for his portrayal of snow, Adam has shied away from painting the granular material, until now. Closing In has been well received, confirming the son has inherited his father’s artistic prowess. “If anything, I hope people see my work as a collection of the different ranges of what I do and the different feelings and attitudes of what I do,” he muses.
