Trailside Galleries will soon exhibit new works by Brent Cotton, the Montana-based artist best known for his landscapes and sporting imagery. On view will be an array of studio paintings and smaller scenes made outdoors. Raised on a cattle ranch in Idaho, Cotton learned about art from his grandmother, a talented watercolorist. He grew up sketching cowboys and horses, and an influential high school instructor encouraged him to pursue a career in art. Cotton then attended workshops S E P T E M B E R / O C T O B E R

and studied with leading figures in wildlife and Western art, among them Howard Terpning. In 1999, he moved to Maui, where his paintings took on a moodier cast. The foggy days he experienced there, combined with the forest fires of Montana, where he continued to spend his summers, led him toward a tonalism that seems both timeless and somehow familiar. “My new works,” Cotton explains, “explore the many moods of my corner of Montana, showcasing its rivers and the countryside I’m blessed to be immersed in every day.” 2 0 1 6
