J
ackson, Wyoming, has a long history of attracting nature lovers, and Trailside Galleries’ annual Wildlife Discovery exhibition brings together a diverse group of wildlife artists with an appreciation for nature that goes further than aesthetics. The participating artists are keenly aware of how
climate change is affecting the world’s fragile ecosystems and use their art as an educational tool to encourage wildlife preservation. Bruce Lawes’ painting A Familiar Path depicts an icon of Africa. “The majestic elephant walks tall against an even taller backdrop and for this herd so ends a journey

not unlike that of yesterday, traversing the corridors of their memory along ancient trails that run like the long veins of life,” says Lawes. He hopes that efforts will be made to preserve the elephant, so the scenes of his paintings do not become a thing of the past. The African savanna was also an inspiration

for Lindsay Scott. Her painting Gathering features a herd of zebras grazing. Her background as a botanical researcher and biologist gives her a unique perspective on these impressive creatures. The scene in Ralph Oberg’s painting The Golden Warmth of Dawn was inspired by a backpacking trip through Colorado’s Gore Range. “Animals often orient themselves
broadside to the rising sun as they bend down so they will quickly absorb the morning’s warmth after a long, cold night,” Oberg says. After backpacking the trail once at 24, he says, “It was a bit more difficult at 65, but very rewarding to have witnessed this glorious sunrise after a violently windy and cold night at that high elevation.” Wildlife Discovery will also include
sculpture from Mick Doellinger and paintings by James Morgan, Renso Tamse and Ron Kingwood. The exhibition will be on view through March 15 at Trailside Galleries.
