ADobe ILLUSTRATOR

Adobe Illustrator software that helps a designer create vector images and artworks. Perspective drawings can also be created to show scenes from certain point of views making them look realistic. It consists of precision drawing tools and vast brushes. It is capable of holding various creative tools such as gradients, blob brushes, advanced typography, distortions, blending options, 3D effects, clipping masks and various other graphical tools. This software provides various advantages such as the shape builder that combines shapes and drawing enhancements that enables the designer to insert an image between

images using a clipping mask. A thing I like is the Pixel Preview which allows the user to rasterize the image at the time of work. Since this is one of the Adobe software, it is able to integrate with other solutions such as the Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Photoshop and other leading software. Its largest gain is that it works with most of the graphic files such as PDF, PSD, TIFF, GIF, JPEG, SWF and many others. Before creating an artwork, Adobe Illustrator allows the user to choose a profile whether it is a web or a print document offering various dimensions, colour groups and more.

ADobe PHOTOSHOP

Adobe Photoshop CS5 introduced new features such as the contentaware fill. It enables the user to remove any detail from the image and instead fills in the space left behind with the matching background. Selection is now made easier because specific areas of an image are selected within a click. It works by eliminating background colour around the selection edges and vary them using new tools. The software provides a 64-bit performance meaning it can take up and process very large images at once. It enables the user to save the

16-bit image files to 8-bit JPEGs. It integrates with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and Adobe CS Live online services to create HDR images and panoramas. It supports PDF pages and security controls can be added. Using Adobe Flash, the software can export high resolution images to be viewed with Adobe Flash Player. Photoshop supports many image files such as AI, PDF, NEF, CRW, TIFF, BMP, JGPEG2000, FXG, OpenEXR, PNG, Targa, Cineon, JPEG and PSD. It also supports video files for 3G, FLC, MOV, AVI, DV Stream, Image Sequence, MPEG4 and FLV.

ADobe INDESIGN

Adobe InDesign software enables the user to design page layouts using creative tools and typography from various fonts established in the software. It is able to incorporate video and audio that can be played on smart phones and tablets. It has a function to export documents to flash where the layout can be turned to animation and other interactivity. This software has the function to create eBooks thus it embeds the previous video and audio mentioned. The articles panel organizes the content of the page layout. Features support multiple page sizes, linked text, productivity tools, live

captions, automation and many others. The layers panel manages the items of the layout easily, just like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Something fascinating is that paragraphs can be split or spanned into multiple columns just like you see on a newspaper or magazine. Images can be altered and edited. Adobe InDesign integrates with other Adobe solutions such as Adobe Photoshop, Flash and Illustrator. It can also integrate with online services of Adobe. File formats such as IDML or XML are supported to enable developers modify files. It exports to all PDF standards.

YIYING LU Yiying Lu is a designer and illustrator who is famous for the Fail Whale and the Foul Owl. The whale appears on the network of Twitter when it slows down. The owl appears then an account gets suspended or spammed. She is the winner of the Shorty Awards who are the best producers of the short content on Twitter. She dreams of adding visual to the current Google Logo. She makes us of Coral Draw and Adobe Illustrator. She either sketches first or draws digitally directly from beginning to end. She mostly likes to make use of nature and animal imagery because they are quite symbolic and each viewer can interpret it in his own way. Currently Yiying likes to mix animals with technology “so they would be geek and cute. Her greatest inspiration is Saul Steinberg who was an American artists, cartoonist and illustrator mostly famous for his work that appeared in The New Yorker magazine.

CHRIS cHRIS LEAVENS

Chris Leavens is an artist currently living in Los Angeles. He started his career by working in the film industry but later he decided to change his work to an illustrator, graphic designer and web designer.

8

Chris creates vector art focusing on educational illustrations for children. He likes to add the elements of absurdity, anthropomorphism and humour. He likes his art to be thought of hard to describe and unique.

He makes use of Adobe Illustrator CS4 including textural elements. He learned Illustrator on his own and learned to use different tools. Chris created art first and thinks about the technical stuff later. He uses complex custom brushes to create textures. He starts off his illustrations by drawing basic flat shapes and setting the basic colours he would use. When Chris finalizes his composition, he adds details such as faces, clothing and decorations. He then starts shading and finishes off with textures. He makes use mostly of clipping masks because it is easy to add elements and move them within a mask. He uses gradients and feathered objects nested within clipping masks for shading. He also uses the classic pen tool and organizes everything in a lot of layers. His workspace involves a Mac Pro, a big LCD and a Wacom Intuos4 tablet which he keeps near his keyboard since he uses it a lot while drawing. He says “whatever helps you create faster and better is the right way”.

TRAVIS tRAVIS PRICE pRICE Travis Price is a freelance designer and illustrator. As a child he was influenced by skateboarding, graffiti and clothing design. In fact, he owns a kids label called Mister Mista. His style is versatile so that it attracts both kids and grownups such as cartoon characters, fantasy creatures and realistic portraits. He creates a lot of print posters where he thinks they are the best medium to express typography and illustration together. He studied Graphic Design and worked for various companies by creating T-shirts. Travis uses journals to keep ideas in where later he expresses them on Illustrator. He uses different methods between his personal work and client work. He starts his personal work by sketching rough ideas in his journal and redraws the idea in excess of a week. Usually clients have a solid idea of the final illustration. When he creates posters he combines typography with illustration which is the perfect medium for communication. Travis gives the idea of customizing existing fonts using the blend tool and 10

warp effects instead of creating a custom font. In his free time he likes to watch TV whilst sketching ideas. He is constantly inspired from search illustrations on blogs and websites such as ffffound. com and tutorials such as Vectortuts+.

Before one creates an illustration he has to ask himself three simple questions: Where do you want the eye of the viewer to go? Who are you creating the work for? Who is the intended audience?

ANDREA AUSTONI Andrea Austoni is a great Italian designer and illustrator from Milan. He has a degree in Architecture and did not really study graphic design. Andrea gets inspired from art and sociology which he also studied. Andrea is self-taught and has been designing professionally for the last twelve years and says that he still learns every day. The advantage to his work is his study in architecture because he learned to see the big picture and reach every detail which makes it easy for him to design. He specializes in icons of mobile and desktop applications where he combines the brand with the illustration. However he would like to develop more illustrations because they are much more demanding work. When choosing colours, first pick one and when done with it add another colour, see what happens and the process repeats itself with more colours added. Andrea makes use of Adobe Photoshop when it comes to adding textures and faint brush strokes so that he expresses complexity and interest

to the image. Basically it allows him to create complex shading with the use of digital paint, vector shapes and layer styles. Therefore vector graphics are combined with raster graphics. He suggests to beginning designers “don’t be “Don’t be afraid to follow your passions afraid to follow and interests, your passions and no matter how strange they interests, no matter are”.

how strange they are.”
