Kimberly Rice Selected works

K The past six scrupulous years of architecture school at The University of South Florida shaped me not only as a designer, but as a person. I developed an intense passion for architecture and the way it affects experience and the environment. Through my education i grew my understanding of physical model making, digital modeling/rendering, and hand drafting to understand scale and space. I am actively seeking a full-time position in the architectural field to further my understanding of the profession and grow as a designer. my intention is to gain my hours and experience for acquiring my architecture license, as well as a deeper understanding of sustainable design. this portfolio is an assemblage of works from my education at the university of south Florida school of architecture and community design. these works showcase my passion and focus of sustainability, connectedness, and accessibility.

Casa La Atalaya by Alberto Kalach mother in law extension Latin american architecture / fall 2018 / professor josue robles

the mother in law extension of the casa la atalaya by alberto kalach in southern california complements the existing structure by incorporating the details of Materiality. the usage of wood and concrete creates a certain designation within the spaces of public and private. one of the most important aspects of the existing Structure is the usage of light. The extension uses a main light well off the prayer room to filter light into the internal spaces. a panorama curtain wall system allows light to be flooded into the main spaces as well as providing a spectacular view. the privacy of the owners is recognized through the suppression of the extension into the topography. the view from the existing is undistorted and the extension can be reached in just a few steps but remain unseen. in highlight of the climate and landscape, two balconies are provided. the main terrace is an extension of the living room and sliding glass doors can allow the home to Literally expand. the second additional terrace off of the bedroom is an exterior prayer room and private exterior space. the interior prayer room is located four feet higher than the rest of the home to create a sacred space. the room is open with no doors but because of the angle of the walls, privacy is created.

queens street canopy in aberdeen, scotland advanced design d / summer 2018 / professor josue robles

The existing conditions of Queen Street in the city center of aberdeen are unused as a destination and is clearly just used as a pedestrian and car through-way. The square is bare, unused, and has no clear program. The entire site is used mainly by the police, which take up a majority of land usage. my group began by learning the history of Aberdeen and the style of urban and architecture language of the city. I found this helpful to design something that fit into the culture and town. I think the next steps of talking with city council members from other sectors was the most helpful because of their insight to the project. The main urban and architectural principles used for our project are a central sheltered gathering space and major pedestrian route. This area has a high amount of light exposure and the overhead condition allows for easy transition between two major structures: the Concert Hall and Queen’s Market. The wave like motion is influenced by the nearby coastline. The essential architectural parts of the existing buildings that are maintained within the project are Marischal college, The Arts Centre, and Queens Church. this project was accomplished with the group members annabelle c. and lin y.

The University of South Florida Interfaith Chapel is located in the heart of campus next The Marshal Student Center and many of the academic class rooms. The Chapel is available to all students, staff, and faculty regardless of their religious beliefs and Affiliations. There is no religious icons, decorations, or symbols present in The Interfaith Chapel to indicate any form of religion. The building is to be used for group worshiping, special events, and individual meditation. The Chapel contains a library and offers religious counseling services aside from the worshiping and gathering spaces. The building is intended to be a safe and stress relieving space. The space is without influence and is able to uplift and calm a user in a inspirational way. The user will find solitude but not loneliness through the use of light as a means of guidance and inspiration. The demographics of the building’s users are college students around 18 years of age or older, college professors around 25 years of age or older, and college staff around 18 years of age or older. The Chapel will serve 47,000 students and 15,000 professors and staff. The building is intended to be multi-cultural, multi-gender, and multi-religious for all 62,000 people.

the fort matanzas museum of history core design III / spring 2016 / professor nancy sanders

FORT MATANZAS in saint Augustine, florida is a historical remembrance of florida’s colonial history. The fort has been standing since 1740 and its landscape provides a home to hundreds of wild life. Through studying the landscape surrounding fort matanzas, the strong connection between bodies of water became prominent. In the study model to the top right is intended to show these connections through a WIRE FRAME MODEL Intertwined with a WOOD BASE on plexi ribs woven together to bind the two wood systems. the wood base is scored with the construction lines of the MAP OF THE FORT and its surrounding landscape. This ORTHOGONAL MAP WOOD BASE acts as a stamp when watercolors or paints are applied. The watercolor paintings created the series of paintings, one is shown at the bottom right. the concept drawn from these study models and drawings is the importance and hierarchy of the water and history supporting the forts placement and Existence. the views and circulation from the following final model were created to showcase this concept.

the deaf milieu masters project / fall 2018 - spring 2019 / professor nancy sanders

Sight, sound, taste, smell, touch, temperature, pain, balance, and awareness all affect one’s relationship to architecture. But what happens when one of these senses are lost? The intent of my masters project is to discover the balance of sensory loss through architecture with studies of the Deaf Community. This specific community not only has its own culture and way of life but also a dire need for accessibility and Gratification within architecture. For instance, those who can hear are able to talk within tight or narrow corridors. In contrast, the Deaf Community has difficulty signing to each other in small spaces because it is needed for them to see the entire group they are signing with. Therefore, there is a need for larger social interaction spaces and circulation when Communicating in American Sign Language. The final product will be able to be implemented into many geographical locations and cultures by way of the fluid language of the senses. I will conduct physical studies of the senses while finding case studies of buildings that interact well with a person’s senses. My research will give me insight into the accessibility of architecture for those with sensory loss and will also inspire ways to provide an enjoyable relationship when designing spaces. My result will be a relatable entity of architecture bridging both the hearing world and the Deaf Community by the notion of the human senses.

To interact with the site as well as my previous research and

concept of a sensory interaction that supports the loss of hearing and the

C

culture of the Deaf Community, I came up a sequence of three entities called The Rochester Deaf Milieu. The three main components are The Thermal Spa, a Pedestrian Bridge, and The Poetry Center.

The Thermal Spa contains four main alcoves, a hot spring, a large

grand relaxation stair touching the existing water, and circulation by a grand spiral stair and a pulley mechanical elevator.

The Pedestrian Bridge is an organic symbiosis with the landscape

that balances from the safety of before the drop to cantilever over the edge above the loud and shaking drop of the waterfall. The bridge circulates around the historical Gorsline Building facade, out to water again, for a lookout pier containing seating.

The Poetry Center is an intervention within the historical Gorsline

Building facade and bones; honoring its history, but challenging a new beginning. The program of the Poetry Center is a main lobby on the ground floor, bringing you down a grand stair or a double elevator into the first underground floor where a study or community gathering space overlooks a large double floor circular library. Circulating around is the large auditorium. Then further down the wide hallway, is the lobby for the artist housing containing four units. Circulating down into the second underground floor, either by way of the artist housing stair or the main lobby circulation, is the large double floor circular library, an office space, a small auditorium, and the other two units of the artists housing.

The Thermal Spa was inspired by my influential initial study of Peter Zumthor’s Thermal Vals. The use of materiality to interact with one’s senses inspired the design of The Thermal Spa in The Deaf Milieu to be a place of tranquility and restitution.

The Pedestrian Bridge’s organic nature is inspired by the anatomy of a cochlear implant. it’s also a symbolism of anxiety within public space in Deaf Culture. The left portion of the bridge is safe, While the right portion cantilevers off the water fall.
