In the past, thousands of Coronans supported CORONANight with the Angels, organizing their own groups of co-workers, friends and family. Fond memories remain of the past games when some businesses would charter transportation for their employees and enjoy a night of bonding and promoting “esprit de corps”. This year, Administrative Professional’s Day is also on April 27. This allows a splendidly timed opportunity to show appreciation to your dedicated administrators with tickets to see the Los Angeles Angels. Walking for those who served! May 28, 2016
T
he CORONA Chamber Foundation is proud to present the 2nd Annual Memorial Mile March on May 28, 2016. This is chance to show appreciation and honor those that paid with their lives in order to maintain America’s freedoms during Memorial Day weekend. The inaugural Memorial Mile March, held last year, found hundreds of participants of all ages carrying small American flags. Attached to the flags was a tag that carried the name of a soldier killed in America’s defense or a veteran that served our country. We will begin the walk with those who are walking in honor of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice…followed by those waving the flag with names of veterans who have served. We will have Active Duty leading the walk, carrying a large American Flag.
Foundation Vice President Don Williamson is the founder of CORONA History Association which has supplied the Chamber with names of Corona residents that perished while serving in WWI; WWII, Korean War, Vietnam and others. The Chamber Foundation will have flags noting the names, branch of service and years served affixed on each; individuals can pick up a flag that day with these local war heroes name on it. Marchers can write the name of any veteran(s) they wish to honor on the tag or add the name of one of our local military heroes that made the ultimate sacrifice. On-line pre-registration is encouraged and may be completed on the CORONA Chamber of Commerce website link, www.CORONAchamber.org.
THE CORONA CHAMBER FOUNDATION IS PROUD TO PRESENT THE 2ND ANNUAL MEMORIAL MILE MARCH ON MAY 28, 2016. THIS IS CHANCE TO SHOW APPRECIATION AND HONOR THOSE THAT PAID WITH THEIR LIVES IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN AMERICA’S FREEDOMS DURING MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND. The 2016 Memorial Mile March will begin at the office of the CORONA Chamber of Commerce, 904 East Sixth Street, Corona, at 9 a.m. with registration starting at 8 a.m. A small donation will be encouraged, but not required, with any funds raised going to the CORONA Chamber Foundation, a 501-C3 charity. During registration, American flags and tags to attach to them will be distributed.
The actual distance of the Memorial Mile March route is approximately 1.5 miles. The course covers the southern half of Grand Boulevard. Marchers will have the opportunity to enjoy many of Corona’s most historic homes as they stroll past them. The Memorial Mile March will conclude on the lawn at the Corona City Hall. A brief tribute honoring the fallen heroes and the planting of the
flags in a patriotic symbol will conclude the event. The Memorial Mile March concept is the inspiration of U.S. Army veteran, Mike Ehredt, who selected Corona as the location for the first Memorial Mile March in the country. In 2010, Mike ran 4424 miles from the Atlantic coast in Maine across the United States to the Pacific coast in Oregon. Each mile he ran, he left a small flag with the name, rank, age and hometown of each soldier that lost their life during the war in Iraq. He called his tribute to these men
and women, Project America Run. Two years later, on August 25, 2012, Mike took off, this time from the U.S. / Canadian border in Minnesota on Project America Run II. Once again running alone, on this journey, he placed flags with the same personal details, honoring the lives lost in the Afghanistan war, ending his sojourn at the Gulf of Mexico in Texas. Sponsorship opportunities are available to businesses or individuals. Interested parties should contact the CORONA Chamber Foundation (951) 737-3350

hether traffic conditions on the 91 freeway allows maximum speed or crawls at a pace that allows drivers to count the individual pebbles on the highway, it is easy to miss Blackburn’s Farm to Table, a restaurant at 4300 Green River Road #106, just east of the Green River 91 freeway ramps. It is well worth finding the modest confines of the eatery that are visible south of the freeway. The location of Blackburn Farm to Table gives no obvious indication that it houses one of the preeminent cuisines you will discover in the region. Chef Bill Blackburn brought his expertise, refined through experience and formal training with internationally renowned culinary institutes and master chefs, to the western edge of Corona’s boundaries. Here, just as the name indicates, he brings product fresh from the farm to his kitchen where he creates dining masterpieces. You can select familiar sounding dishes prepared uncommonly well, such as grilled breast of chicken or hand made hamburger. There area also meals not as common in Corona such

ole Position Raceway is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and is now considered one of the most-exciting entertainment venues in the Inland Empire. The national chain of indoor go kart tracks began in Corona and has now expanded to Nevada, Texas, Oklahoma, New York, New Jersey and Missouri. “We never dreamed that we would have such an impact on this industry,” said Ken Faught, President and co-founder of Pole Position Raceway. “Indoor karting has become extremely popular, especially with companies looking for places to host corporate events. Our chain of kart tracks have hosted thousands of team building events, new product launches and holiday parties, and we have a wide range of customers.” The indoor karting center features high-performance and electric karts that race at high speeds around a European-style ¼-mile course with up to 12 competitors at a time. The company has both adult and youth karts, and racers just need to be at least 48 inches tall and able to safely operate the karts in order to join the fun. “There are a lot of racing options,” said Kevin Sallee who is the General Manager. “Most of our racing is done ... Can Your Business Survive A Disaster? By Frank Barbarossa, Onsite Computing
D
isasters. They do happen -it’s only a matter of ‘when’. While most businesses acknowledge it, surveys show that only one in four companies worldwide have adequate protection in the event of a major disruption. We’re not talking about insurance here, but a Disaster Recovery (DR) plan that could save you thousands of dollars in losses and worse, a business closure. If you haven’t heard much about what DR is, this post will help you gain some insight about what it is and how it can affect the future of your business. As we all know, unpredictability is a fact of life. The aftermath of Tropical Storm Bill in Texas and recent floods in South Carolina are a grim and unfortunate lesson for many overconfident business owners who think their companies are spared from the likelihood of cataclysmic weather, technological malfunctions, or human actions. A 2014 survey by the IT Disaster Recovery Preparedness (DRP) Council reveals just how many companies worldwide are at risk: 73 percent of SMBs are failing in terms of disaster readiness. What does this mean? It means that 3 out of 4 companies aren’t prepared to handle emergencies and save their businesses from a worse-case scenario. If it’s not clear and compelling enough for a business owner like yourself to consider putting a well-conceived Disaster Recovery
(DR) plan into place, perhaps it’s time to give it some thought. Doing so can save you years of business loss. Here is some useful information about what DR is all about and how it can ensure your business’s survival in the wake of unforeseen circumstances.
ural types of disasters include floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, landslides, tsunamis, and even a pest infestation. On the other hand, technological and man-made disasters involve hazardous material spills, infrastructural or power failure, nuclear power plant meltdown or blast, chemical threat and biological weapons, cyber-attacks, explosions, or acts of terrorism and civil unrest.
What is Disaster Recovery (DR)? Disaster recovery is a plan for restoring and accessing your data in the event of a disaster that destroys part or all of a business’s resources. It is a key component involving many aspects of business operations that requires this information to function.
Why does your business need DR? Regardless of industry or size, when an unforeseen event takes place and causes day-to-day operations to come to a halt, a company will need to re-
HAVING A CLEAR AND WELL-CONCEIVED DISASTER RECOVERY (DR) PLAN IN PLACE CAN SAVE YOU YEARS OF BUSINESS LOSS. HERE IS SOME USEFUL INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT DR IS ALL ABOUT AND HOW IT CAN ENSURE YOUR BUSINESS’S SURVIVAL IN THE WAKE OF UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES. The job of a DR plan is to ensure that whatever happens, your vital data can be recovered and mission-critical applications will be brought back online in the shortest possible time.
cover as quickly as possible to ensure you will continue providing services to clients and customers. Downtime is one of the biggest IT expenses that any business can face. Based on 2015 disaster recovery statistics, downtime that lasts for one hour can cost small companies as much as $8,000, mid-size organizations $74,000, and $700,000 for large enterprises.
What kind of disasters are likely to happen? Business disasters can either be natural, technological, or man-made. Nat-

For SMBs particularly, any extended loss of productivity can lead to reduced cash flow through late invoicing, lost orders, increased labor costs as staff work extra hours to recover from the downtime, missed delivery dates, and so on. If major business disruptions are not anticipated and addressed today, it’s very possible that these negative consequences resulting from an unexpected disaster can have long-term implications that affect a company for years. By having a Disaster Recovery plan in place, a company can save itself from multiple risks including out of budget expenses, reputation loss, data loss, and the negative impact on clients and customers. How do I create a DR strategy for my business? Creating, implementing, and maintaining a total business recovery plan is time-consuming but extremely important to ensure your business’s survival. Many organizations don’t have the time or resources to dedicate to this process. If you would like to protect your company from unexpected disasters but need further guidance and information on how to get started, talk to a professional IT organization. Weekend full closure of 91 yields results as crews consolidate work efforts
S
olid planning, strong teamwork, and a supportive community allowed the Riverside County Transportation Commission’s 91 Project team to conduct a weekend full closure of eastbound and westbound 91 in Corona, Feb. 19-22. The 55-hour full closure of the 91 between the 71 and I-15 cleared the roadway, allowing crews to consolidate three major work efforts in a safe environment. For weeks prior to the closure, the project team implemented a robust “91 Steer Clear” public outreach campaign, which urged motorists to plan ahead, avoid the area or stay home.
SOLID PLANNING, STRONG TEAMWORK AND A SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY MADE THE 55 HOUR CLOSURE A SUCCESS. Once the roadway was cleared, crews tackled three complex operations: Crews demolished the west half of the Maple Street Bridge, removing and hauling away close to 2,200 tons of concrete. To prepare for construction of the new westbound Maple Street onramp flyover bridge, workers placed 48 steel “Super Beams,” each weighing 22 tons and measuring 120 feet by 3 feet. Workers also placed smaller beams and built the wooden framework for the structure.
Crews paved the eastern end of the project limits near I-15, another major operation requiring multiple layers of pavement. To view a time-lapse video of the weekend work, go to the “91 Steer Clear” webpage on the project website, sr91project.info. The effort placed approximately 200 workers on site during the weekend, all focused on completing the operations in time to reopen the roadway by Monday, Feb. 22 at 4 am. Crews opened the westbound lanes by 1:30 am and the eastbound lanes by 3:30 am. They also used the roadway closure to perform various maintenance activities, including pothole repair, lane restriping and trash pickup within the project limits. Because of the outreach efforts, which included billboards, signs, radio ads, social media posts, news conferences, heavy news coverage, email reminders, detour maps and presentations, motorists heeded the warnings and steered clear from the area. Metrolink operated extra trains and offered a “2 for the price of 1” promotion. Ridership on regularly scheduled trains passing through Corona showed a 30 percent increase over the same weekend a year ago with 2,672 passengers. The City of Corona aided the effort by spreading the word to its residents, creating a list of 55 things to do during the 55-hour weekend closure, and hosting a social media “Staycation in Corona” contest. “The 91 Steer Clear was an incredible success. The way to approach a complex operation like this is to plan ... Continued on page 6

Legislative Outreach
O
ften stated, if you are not at the table, most likely you are part of the menu! This phrase has become common ground in political arenas – and while the CORONA Chamber does not endorse individuals, we do focus our energy and outreach in advocating for good common sense legislation, protecting jobs and working against any anti-business legislation. At their February 18 Board of Directors meeting, a unanimous vote provided solid direction for the CORONA Chamber to be involved in information and collection of forms, letters and emails specific to the Southern California Edison (SCE) Transmission lines. SCE plans to build a new substation in CORONA. 66kV lines are being proposed by SCE, some overhead and some underground. The Corona Chamber prefers all lines to be installed underground. “We understand the costs increase when selecting underground versus overhead,” says Mark Peabody, 2016 Chairman of the Board, “We know the city leadership has worked for years to create an aesthetically beau-
tiful community. Overhead lines do not fit into this plan. Additionally, underground is much safer.” “The environmental appearance, as well as the continued health and safety of our residents is of paramount importance when moving forward with a project of this magnitude. The City of Corona has gone to great lengths to plan our urban area to successfully transition into a premier location for businesses and residents as we move into the 21st century. They have embraced technology and quality of life issues to attract productive and active community members who desire a robust economy and a beautiful landscape in which to live, work and raise their families.” Technology exists to construct this entire project with the goal of causing the least amount of interruption during construction, preservation of our pending and newly-constructed roads associated with the 91 freeway project and arriving at an end result that does not leave our citizens with unsightly overhead powerlines that would detract from the beauty we
are trying to create and preserve in our city. Not only are overhead powerlines unsightly, but they are also unhealthy to live or work around, limit development of prime real estate and drive down the values of adjacent land. Underground transmission lines are largely undetectable, just as reliable and help preserve the envi-

tudents, parents, and teachers from La Jolla to Sherman Oaks arrived by 7:15 the morning of February 13, 2016 for the 1st Corona STEM Academy VEX Robotics Competition. The buzz started immediately as people came in and settled into stations around the gym at El Cerrito’s Gym, looking for power outlets and room to put all of their equipment. The 35 teams filled up the room quickly and started running their robots in the practice fields, shooting foam balls across the arenas into small nets. The teams spent weeks leading up to the event working on fine tun-
ing the programs and parts on their robots. Local engineers, Avery Smith and Bruce Rouman, diligently interviewed students and checked their Engineering Notebooks to qualify a team to go to the State Finals. Both Corona High and Auburndale Intermediate from our school district had robots in the competition. Since coach Pete D’Agostino from Auburndale was busy running the event, his all girls team, the Robodogs, had to turn to others for guidance and assistance as it was the first event they competed in. The girls were happy that students from the other teams
were friendly and willing to help with their problems. They didn’t qualify for the elimination tournament, but it was a great experience for them. The teams worked hard all day and at 5:30, we had a tournament winner and several Judges awards. Auburndale student, Christen Michaelides said, “the robotics competition was definitely very challenging, but it was also fun.” She said she recommends a lot more people join because it’s a lot of fun. Teammate Stephanie Mendez said “We got to interact with other teams… It was a great first time experience. I love Robotics!” Overall,
ronmental serenity and beauty we all desire. The CORONA Chamber sent overnight a package of over 150 letters from businesses, residents and organizations to the CPUC expressing the concerns of local businesses, their employees, residents and organizations relative to the planned project.
