he local chapter of American Diabetes Association will showcase three gentlemen with the coveted Father of the Year award. Mark Peabody, Ned Sciortino and Dale Venaas will be honored in a black tie preferred event. This ceremony also serves to bring attention to the rapid expansion of diabetes in our region while honoring these gentlemen. The event will take place at the Riverside Convention Center on June 13. The mission of the Father’s Day Council, “To identify and honor fathers who have demonstrated the

he Corona Chamber of Commerce’s Executive Leadership Roundtable (ELR) program selects a local service project to complete by their graduation in May. This year the 2017-2018 class has chosen to work with The Joe Dominguez

Memorial Mile March cont’d spells out USA. Affixed to each flag is the name of a local hero that sacrificed their lives in service to our country. Marchers may also create their own tag with the name of any veteran or active duty member that they wish to honor. Idaho resident, Mike Ehredt, founder of Project America Run, inspired this event. Mike walked from the Pacific to Atlantic Oceans and again from the Mexican to Canadian borders placing a flag approximately each mile with the name of a service member that gave their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan, respectively. Event Chair, Jami Merchant says this year’s March will be exceptionally important, “One of our Foundation Board members, Mark Maes (who sets the USA ribbon), has connected with World War II veteran, Robert Henry Morales. Mr. Morales, now in his nineties, will be our Grand Marshall.” Participation in the Memorial Mile March is FREE. The Chamber Foundation is always happy to accept donations to support local charity projects. The first 200 who are at the Chamber of Commerce at the 9:00 a.m. start time are guaranteed to receive a flag (registration check in begins at 8:00 a.m.) The route to the Historic Civic Center proceeds down Sixth Street to East Grand Boulevard and proceeds through the beautiful vintage homes that line the street and back to West Sixth to the Historic Civic Center. A brief ceremony will honor veterans following which shuttles will be available to return marchers to the Chamber of Commerce. Come and show your respect and appreciation for our country’s heroes, while enjoying what promises to be a beautiful day in CORONA.

LAC cont’d SACRAMENTO BOUND: In May, the LAC, which is an all-volunteer group whose members pay their own way, is headed to Sacramento. While in the State Capital, they will meet with elected officials and decision makers, to ensure they hear our local viewpoints and understand our positions on pertinent issues. The Corona Chamber has traveled to Sacramento many times through the years on this mission. Most recently, CEO and President Bobby Spiegel hand delivered the Chamber’s two page document (see on Chamber website) to CalPERS. The CalPERS Board’s history of poor investments has increased the amount of taxpayer reimbursements to retirement funds. The Chamber aims to encourage the CalPERS Board to change their investment policies and strategies. Each tax dollar sent to reimbursement CalPERS funding shortage could find a reduction in local emergency services and/or an increase in taxes. The Chamber enthusiastically supports Corona Police Sergeant Jason Perez, as he seeks to
be elected to the CalPERS Board. Sergeant Perez will be a refreshing voice to redirect the billions of dollars invested into optimum returns. LOCAL INVOLVEMENT: In March, Corona City Manager, Darrell Talbert met with the Chamber Board of Directors. Mr. Talbert provided details of the budget crisis the city is facing and some of the decisions that must be made in the months and years ahead. The following week our Chamber Board met with representatives from our police and fire departments. These agencies account for the city’s largest labor expenses. Each of the representatives provided insight into the current situation for the Board’s review. NATIONAL OUTREACH: The Corona Chamber is planning its annual visit to Washington DC. We will be traveling on Friday, September 21 and Saturday 22. Our official Legislative Summit begins Sunday, September 23. against Job Killer Bills and strive tor keep our two local military institutions in operation (March Air Reserve Base and NAV SEA). Funding for the Chamber takes more than a small percentage of the membership investment made by member

Peabody Scirotino Venaas to receive honors cont’d Mark was raised in Rolling Hills Estates by parents Dick and Ruth Peabody, a rural community on the Palos Verdes Peninsula where he cared for the family’s 17 horses, dogs and cats. As a youth, Mark was independent. He enjoyed hiking on the miles of horse trails in Rolling Hills during his summer vacations, collecting peacock feathers dropped by the wild peacocks that abound on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. He would often leave home before dawn and spend the entire day letting his imagination wander while adventuring on trails with names like John’s Canyon, Sleepy Hollow and Blackwater Canyon. As he got older, he grew to appreciate athletics and he competed in horse shows, played baseball, and wrestled in High School. He graduated from high school a year early and went off to college at Chico State at 17 years of age where he pursued an education in Business Administration. Six years and 4 colleges later, he graduated from Cal State Dominguez Hills with a degree in Finance while working full time for his father’s small family business, Peabody Engineering & Supply in Gardena, CA, a manufacturer of agricultural fertilizer equipment, alongside his brother Larry. In 1982, the same year he graduated from College, he and Larry purchased the company from their father and embarked upon a very difficult and challenging road to success. The Peabody of today is completely different from the company they bought, as they had to adapt to changing market conditions to survive. Today, the company manufactures plastic chemical storage tanks and Cellular antenna screening Mark Peabody products. Mark married Cheryl in 1984 and they had two sons, Kyle (30) and Adam (28) in Cerritos. During this time, Mark & Cheryl were very active in raising their children the right way. Cheryl acted as a teacher’s assistant at their Christian elementary school and Mark was Indian Guides Chief, Scoutmaster, Coach, Sunday School teacher and cheerleader as the boys grew up. During this time, both Kyle and Adam achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, Boy Scout’s highest honor only reached by 2% of all Boy Scouts. In 2002, Mark and Larry moved Peabody Engineering to Corona, CA where it remains to this day. Mark also moved his family to Corona at the same time. In the past 16 years, Mark has been very active in the Corona Community, serving on non-profit boards, Chairman of the Corona Chamber of Commerce, Governing Board at Corona Regional Medical Center and Fundraising Chair at the Circle City Rotary Club. In business, he has been honored with several awards including Manufacturer of the Year, Spirit of the Entrepreneur, Top Workplace awards and most recently, Family Business of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Mark and his wife Cheryl attend Crossroads Christian Church where they serve each weekend and also host a Bible Study in their home. In his spare time, Mark enjoys serving his church and community, gardening, hiking, reading and spending time with family and friends.

Ned Sciortino is Vice President of Development for Hillwood Properties. He has been with Hillwood for sixteen years and has overseen the development of the Norton Airport base in San Bernardino and many large fulfillment centers in the area, such as Ontario’s UPS Air facility, Stater Bros., Pep Boys, Mattel, FedEx and most recently, multiple Amazon Fulfillment Centers. His knowledge and expertise in developing such properties has had an impact on the success of companies choosing to locate in this region, resulting in the creation of thousands of jobs. His work often takes him to many Inland Empire cities to promote work for local comNed Sciortino munities. He believes his reputation speaks loud in the ecommerce business in the Inland Empire. Ned and his wife, Cathy of 39 years, have resided in South Corona for 33 years. They have 3 adult daughters, Carly with husband Eric, Natalie with husband David, and Tessa with husband Tycie. Collectively, they have six grandchildren, 5 dogs and 4 cats. Some of Ned’s community involvements include serving as a City of Corona Planning Commissioner, member of NAIOP, Corona Norco Schools Oversight Committee for Measure GG, City of Hope Contractors Annual Golf Tournament Commissioner, Corona Rotary International, as well as many work related Leadership committees. Ned is also the recipient of the REXIE Industrial Leader of the Year Award. In his spare time, Ned can be found enjoying a game of golf, a sport he has played since a young boy or spending time with his pride and joy, his six grandchildren.

Dale Venaas is a registered nurse and the Director of Health Education at Riverside Medical Clinic, where he has worked for the last 17 years. His clinical experience is in the cardiac and critical care nursing areas, but since coming to work at Riverside Medical Clinic in 2001, his focus has been on developing and implementing patient education programs for Riverside and its surrounding communities. Dale lives in Riverside with his wife Jennifer, who works as a clinical supervisor for therapists working at a social service agency in Los Angeles. His daughter Calli works as an office coordinator for a physical therapy clinic in Portland, Oregon. of cars, Grant said no for 2 months until his friend convinced him to do it. “I only agreed because I thought ‘who else would risk having me shoot their wedding knowing that I had no experience?’ I was scared to death, but it turned out great and I started getting calls from her friends and things took off from there.” Since then, Grant Romancia has become one of the most successful photographers in Canada. Photography has provided Grant with a lifestyle and the flexibility to help others. “I help organize a charity event involving 7 professional photographers, where we photograph 7 brides trashing their wedding dresses. We donate our time to photograph them, along with all of the other vendors donating hair, makeup, jewelry,

The brides fundraise, with the highest fundraisers winning prizes. 100% of the money raised goes towards a Childrens’ Hospital, where equipment is purchased.” The event has raised almost $200,000 in the last few years since it began. “My wife and I also volunteer as facilitators of a divorce care program, to help those going through all the difficulties of a divorce.” The initial camera investment was natural, as he is an avid classic car enthusiast. He is a recipient of many awards from the Professional Photographers of Canada, and since 2012, Grant has been a finalist for Photographer of the Year twice. This honor puts him in the top 5 photographers in the country. “I feel very blessed to be gifted with great talent, vision, and the ability to work so well with clients.” Marriage brought Grant to California, and with his outgoing personality, he is restarting his business. This means not only life saving techniques can be performed sooner, but also the need for patients to drive out of town for follow up treatment and continued services is eliminated. Despite his very youthful appearance, Dr. Khandhar has been in practice for ten years. He has been selected by the Corona Chamber of Commerce, to be one of our “40 under 40” honorees. 12 Money Tips for Your Kids or Grandkids. Most kids still graduate high school with very little comprehension of basic personal finance and end up very stressed or misinformed about their money decisions, so we believe this list is timely and useful.
1. For little kids, use a clear jar to let them help build up savings and watch it grow. 2. Teach them the difference between debit cards and credit cards. 3. Show them how and why to comparison shop. 4. Help them keep a family budget for 3 months. 5. Teach them the difference between saving and investing. 6. Teach them different ways to borrow money and what a credit score is.
7. Teach them simple interest vs compound interest. 8. Teach them about insurance: home, auto, disability, life, etc. 9. Show them how to research different investments: stocks, ETFs, real estate, mutual funds, private businesses, etc. 10. Discuss with them the difference between needs and wants. 11. Pay kids commissions, not allowance... teaching them money is earned. (They don’t get it by just breathing). 12. Teach them the difference between earned income and passive investment income.

The Kennedy Center Announces Arts Across America T
he John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts recently announced “Arts Across America”. The Corona Chamber was honored to help coordinate the inaugural event on March 2, 2018. The program helps recognize thriving arts communities across the country. Through community outreach and one-day events, Arts Across America will spotlight everyday cities and towns that are using the arts to promote connection, a strong creative economy, and cultural citizenship. Future events are currently scheduled for Fort Lauderdale, Florida on April 22 and 23, and in Braddock, Pennsylvania on June 8. Participating Kennedy Center leadership includes Artistic Advisor At-Large Yo-Yo Ma, Chairman David M. Rubenstein, and President Deborah F. Rutter.

Food Runners is Chamber feeds 300 Volunteers at March Air Growing! Field’s 100th Celebration The Corona Chamber supports our military in numerous ways. Our recent outreach enabled the volunteers (300 each day) to enjoy a hot breakfast that the Chamber provided. A special thank you to our partner, Lucy Silva with Food Runners, and chamber Board Members: Dean Seif and Kim Mabon for helping on Saturday morning. The March Field Air and Space Expo—Thunder Over the Empire was in celebration of March Field turning 100 years old!
The entire weekend provided many spectators the opportunity to watch a terrific show. We have included a couple of photos.
Food Runners Club is a life skills program that provides middle and high school students in the Corona area opportunities to serve others. Food Runners volunteers expand their personal horizons beyond their immediate peer group to a larger community: their neighborhood, their city, and surrounding Riverside County areas. Volunteers learn many areas of the food service industry, valuable work readiness skills, life skills and charity awareness. The Food Runners Club experience expands upon the traditional community service requirements colleges and universities look for. They provide catering to nonprofit organizations, schools and public service events at price points that enable organizations to more easily achieve their fundraising goals. We’re excited to announce the Food Runners Club has welcomed 8 new members this spring! New members bring with them new levels of enthusiasm and drive to learn and serve their community. They’ve most recently been busy catering and serving events like Seder at Congregation Beth Shalom, brunch at Inland Vineyard Church’s women’s group, breakfast at the 100th Anniversary Air Show at March AFRB and more. Most recently, they prepared and served dinner to the Corona Firefighters at Station 3. Cooking classes were added to the Food Runners Club program in 2017. Members have learned how
to prepare meals including a full turkey dinner with all the fixings, healthy lunches, and desserts like scones and decorated layered cakes. Each week’s class is free for members of the Food Runners Club, so Food Runners are seeking donations to help underwrite this unique program. Additionally, Food Runners has a huge BBQ & Brews event slated for September 22. Funds raised during the inaugural event last year netted over $27,000. This year the goal is to secure the final $15,000 needed to purchase a transportation vehicle. For more information, or to donate, please contact Lucy Silva at 951-235-2423.
