Census 101: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

T

he 2020 Census is almost here! Here are a few quick facts from the October 14 Census Complete Count Committee meeting about what it is, why it’s essential, and what you can expect. The U.S. Constitution mandates that everyone in the country be counted every 10 years. The first census was in 1790. It’s about fair representation; the results of the census are used to reapportion the House of Representatives, which determines how many seats each state gets. State

officials also use this data to redraw the boundaries of the congressional and state legislature districts, which helps account for population shifts. The census also provides for the distribution of more than $675 billion in federal funds, which is allocated by population for schools, hospitals, roads, public works, and other vital programs. In 2020, participating will be easier than ever, with the ability to respond to the census online. ... Continued on page 15

CEO’S Adaptability from Employers Required CORNER Bobby Spiegel

W

ith an ever-changing economy, business owners need to be on top of their game. While continual growth has always been a dream for businesses, these days, the workforce choices are becoming slimmer. This is evident by the trend for less trained applicants making demands for higher wages. On our recent trip to Washington D.C., Dr. Isaac Maya with USC’s Center for Economic Research, Department of Homeland Security and Commerce Department shared thoughts about the progress in technology that has caused this to happen. While we are grateful for these advances, current employees often will be slow to adapt to the change. While newer employees may be more eager to embrace it, their in-depth knowledge and shallow experience causes new implementations to be challenging. The Corona Chamber is proud to be on the forefront of identifying some amazing individuals. We are seeking nominations for the 2020 presentation of “40 Under 40”. These individuals lead others toward a better, brighter future within the greater Corona service area and its neighboring communities. Nominations are for those who are at least 21 and as old as 39 by October 31, 2019. Additional requirements can be found online at www.Corona40under40.com.

ACTIVE DUTY, RESERVE, AND VETERANS RECEIVE FREE REGISTRATION Pre-registration must be received by November 7.

(951) 737-3350 or www.MyChamber.org Public invited to attend. Fees vary. Breakfast included.

with New Economic Changes Nominations are made by community and business leaders and are selected by committee. We are looking forward to recognizing the leaders under the age of 40 who are making a difference in our community by excelling in industries ranging from retail, service, distribution, manufacturing and beyond. As our community grows, so do our programs: Recently we partnered with Paul Webb to provide training courses “Sales Masters Training” as an exclusive member benefit. He provided the initial training at our Chamber with back-to-back sessions enabling 60 business leaders to begin this process. If you are interested in learning more, contact Linda Richards, Linda@ MyChamber.org and she will review various options for Paul’s next in person training session. On Friday, November 8, we are hosting the NEW ECONOMY and Economic Summit at Corona City Hall. This program will feature insight and information on the future of our city and region. This is a FREE session. Please RSVP at http://bit. ly/2019EconBriefing or call (951) 7373350. This all-day session will be presented and moderated by the engaging Mo Collins (author, professor and trainer) who will share the stage with other high-powered leaders. We are happy to announce that on Saturday, November 9, Mo will

deliver her nationally acclaimed seminar for women in business. Her special #RosieWasRight will be making its West-coast debut. The full day workshop will be discussing multiple topics such as: three things that have kept women from building business profits and wealth in the old economy; why your passion is legitimate and important to success; how a triple bottom line of people, place and profits will transform your business,

your customers and your community; and trends that are changing every industry – including four industries where women hold 80% of the market (for now). You will have the opportunity to meet women across industries who have combined their passion with clever innovations to grow their sales by 20% - 30% and more. As of this writing, we have some space still available. Register today at http://bit.ly/RosieWasRight2019.

The Chamber is counsel. We bring unparalleled experience and insight to everything we do. And we are a trusted guide for those working to make our communities stronger. Give your business a voice at www.mychamber.org

Women’s Conference Hits a High Note

Photos by Focal Instincts Photography

RIVERSIDE COUNTY

O

ver 600 women and men gathered at the eighth annual Riverside County Women’s Leadership Conference on September 12 to celebrate the power and passion of women. The guest speakers and physician panel were captivating and engaging – from learning how to be a leader worth following, to the importance and power of words, to empowering women to lead with and not against their own biological instincts. The conference was filled with invaluable

life lessons and experiences that empowered all in attendance. Here is what a couple of women shared about their experience: “I learned that vulnerability is key to good leadership. I was reminded that in caring for others, women in particular, do not take time to care for themselves. We need to fill our tanks before we can give to others. I discovered some new insights on women in leadership, and how we perceive each other sometimes in

a threatening way and how counter-productive that is and that the power of words should not be underestimated. I will also share the information on healthcare that I received with regard to early screenings for cancer from the panel of physicians.” – Denise Terrazas “I learned that we should live courageously, boldly and learn to step out of our comfort zone. We have to use our courage to speak truth and use our voice to create good change. We have to remind ourselves that the world needs us.” – Delia Miller “Bring back Dr. Heiss and Sophia Brooks every year. Powerful content!” – Cita Longsworth “I thought the conference was outstanding. The speakers were powerful, the auditorium was perfect and you started and ended on time. The physician panel was fabulous. Great job. I will attend next year.” – Joy Wolfsberger “[I] wish we could bottle this up and

Success In D.C. Advocacy cont’d from page 1 development in Corona. Congressman Mark Takano (D-Riverside), Mark is the current Chairman of Veteran Affairs. Congressman Takano provided an update on what is expected from Congress for the rest of 2019. When the topic of healthcare was raised, our delegation expressed how difficult it is for small business owners to meet the high prices of healthcare. They informed Mark that they are not receiving appropriate value for the expense. As always, Congressman Takano was apprised of the CORONA 2020 progress. Congressman Paul Cook (R-Apple Valley), Geographically, Paul’s congressional district covers the largest part of Interstate 15. With Corona seeking transportation dollars and improvements, it is essential we maintain strong relationships with our regions elected officials. This was our first visit with Congressman Cook. We shared with him local initiatives, CORONA 2020 and I-15 funding. Other Capitol Hill visits included the offices of both of California’s US Senators, Feinstein and Harris. During a brief meeting with the Senators’ staffs, we provided Corona 2020 materials, expressed concerns on environmental issues and provided highlights of local business interests.

The Corona Chamber has enjoyed a longtime relationship with Admiral Eric Ver Hage, which began when he was Commander at NAVSEA, CORONA Division. The Admiral gave our group a 90-minute briefing regarding the Innovation Ecosystem Plan for NAVSEA. When he arrived at the NAVSEA there were about 890 emloyees, and today the local Navy base has over 1,700 jobs. These positions are filled by highly educated staff (83% scientists, engineers and technicians; 28% are veterans). NAVSEA is a state-of-the-art national asset facility, academic industry research partner and generous community citizen. The facility collaborates in education with numerous colleges and universities. Estimates are that 1,100+ employees make over $100k/year. Admiral Ver Hage shared activities at other NAVSEA installations (Newport, Keyport and Crane) and the Inland Empire Logistics Center. The NAVSEA goal is to improve the capability of naval fighting resources. The combined operations have increasing employee needs and are working with local community colleges to instigate certificate programs. This will help find and create the required talent. The CORONA Chamber held several meetings at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce offices revealed here: Tax Policy and Economic Development – The delegation met with the U.S. Chamber’s Interim Chief Economist, Executive Director, Federal Regulatory Progress, Joseph M. Johnson. He suggested that the possibility of

global recession is 7% in 2019 and 30% in 2020 while proposing a possible downturn in mid-2021. He differentiated between the global economies with the stability we are enjoying in the U.S. Labor Regulations, Workplace, Employment – Marc Freedman, the U.S. Chamber’s VP of Workforce Policy (Employment Policy Division) conducted a discussion of bills introduced by the House Education and Labor Committee and the myriad of rules and details of each potential law. Energy – Dan Byers, Vice-President, Policy; Information was provided on Green New Deal and polls that show over 50% “for”. A handout was provided on electricity rates from 2018 as well as oil production and gas production reports and the six-year cost of energy, which has dropped nationwide due to natural gas. In California, the cost of energy has continued to rise each year. This has

had an adverse effect on our State’s businesses where our operations are most sensitive to the cost of energy. Additional sessions attended by the delegation included: Dr. Isaac Maya with USC Center for Economic Research, Department of Homeland Security and Commerce Department spoke about implementing trade tariffs and utilizing data analytics for various Homeland Security measures. He explained challenges such as not enough training has been done for department members. This is essential to understand new technologies. Kathy Ruffalo and Cliff Madison are RCTC Federal lobbyists and are among the best in the country. They said that there is a potential that in 2020 or 2021 an infrastructure package could pass that would provide additional funding for the 91 and 15 freeways. Louis J. Jenny, Vice-President of Advocacy and Outreach, Design Build Institute of America, is also one of the Corona Chamber’s partners in Sacramento. They are the leading advocate for construction and help make the 91/15 projects possible. A special highlight was having our delegation visit Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, September 11. The Corona Chamber had the honor of placing the wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. 2018 Chairman of the Board John Weyhgandt, accompanied by his father, John, did this very significant task at 9:15am (coinciding with the horrific tragedy of 18 years prior). For the Corona Chamber of Commerce, ADVOCACY is a daily priority. We have monthly Legislative Meetings starting at 8am. Friday, November 1 we will be at Eagle Glen Golf Club for a special meeting with David Wolfe of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association. On Friday, December 6, we will host State Senator Richard Roth at the Corona Chamber office. Our next delegation will visit Sacramento in June 2020. Registration is now open at http://bit.ly/SacramentoLegislativeSummit2020. The Three Words That Foundation Transfers Create Business Success $200,000+ to FJC I

P

icture yourself in the shoes of your client, and ask yourself some simple questions. What is the reason you chose this business? Are there other options? Are there competitors that can fulfill the same desire or option? Would it also suffice just to do nothing? There are three words that may help to answer these questions: Unique Selling Proposition (USP). The Unique Selling Proposition is defined as the most important characteristic or driving force of your business. It’s what distinguishes your business apart from your competition. It’s what clients think of when they choose your business over others. The USP is often confused with a slogan or catch phrase. If the slogan doesn’t describe a promise, characteristic, or appealing idea that sets a business apart from other competitors, then it is not a real USP. So, what are some examples of the Unique Selling Proposition? Examples can be taken from some companies that have found extraordinary success with the USP. Some examples include: • Pizza hot and fresh in 30 minutes or less (Domino’s) • When you absolutely have to have it there overnight (FedEx)

• We Try Harder (Avis) • Melts in your mouth, not in your hand (M&Ms) Once you create your own Unique Selling Proposition, that message needs to be carried through in all of your marketing, advertising, and operations. There can be no conflict with the message. Everyone in the organization must know, act, demonstrate, and deliver the Unique Selling Proposition. So, go ahead. Look at the first paragraph and answer the questions. Developing and creating your own Unique Selling Proposition takes time and thinking. If you already have a Unique Selling Proposition, this might be a good time to re-examine. The reward will be well worth the effort. An effective Unique Selling Proposition will give you the differentiation, distinction, and advantage over your competition forever. t has been nearly two years since the public first heard of the horrific abuse suffered by 13 children, members of the Turpin family, living in Perris. The cruelty meted out by their parents drew worldwide attention. Some of the siblings were taken to Corona Regional Medical Center (CRMC). Linda Pearson, the Director of Marketing and Volunteer Services, knew CRMC was not equipped to handle the many calls they were receiving regarding possible donations for the victims. Pearson contacted the Corona Chamber of Commerce’s President/CEO, Bobby Spiegel, who also had been receiving numerous calls also asking how to donate. Ultimately, the decision was made that while the Chamber handled the acquisition of goods and cash, it would be the Corona Chamber Foundation that would provide a safe haven for the hundreds of contributions, totaling over $200,000 that arrived from all over the world. Jolted by the shattering story of the children, the Corona Chamber Foundation Board of Directors were determined to fulfill the verbal promises made while collecting funds that ALL 13 children would benefit from these donations. The contributions would definitely not be spent on bureaucratic services. There would be no compromise on this point. The Board has been

patient, watching the plans develop for the care of the victims that Spiegel fondly dubbed “The Magnificent 13”. After reviewing all options, the Foundation Board believes that Family Justice Center (FJC), affiliated with the Riverside County District Attorney’s office, is the right organization (https:// rivcofjc.org/). The Center has accepted that this will be a restricted donation only for services for and to the Turpin siblings. It is understood that each sibling’s needs may be different, and some may have no needs. The Family Justice Center is a seasoned force and will be a dedicated advocate for the Magnificent 13. The Board is confident that the professionals at the Family Justice Center will be the most appropriate stewards of the donated funds. No one who has heard of the Turpin children will ever forget what these innocent targets of abuse endured. Those who contributed can forever be moved by the knowledge that they played a small part on their road to normal lives. The Chamber Foundation works throughout the year raising funds every Saturday at Cars and Coffee and hosts the Annual Memorial Mile March and Corona Night with the Angels. and job creation is making the U.S. the premier place for business, and is restoring our position as an economic leader on the world stage.” The Trump Administration’s policies have delivered repeated wins for American workers. In July, the current economic expansion became the largest in U.S. history – a testament to the strength of President Trump’s business-friendly policies. Before 2018, nominal average hourly wage gains had not reached 3.0 percent since 2009.
