The area between Los Angeles and San Diego is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery in the county. While there are a number of beach towns and coastal communities dotting the landscape, there’s none quite like Laguna Niguel. Located in the San Joaquin Hills in the southwest corner of Orange County, this hidden gem is surrounded by rolling hills and coastal canyons leading to the Pacific Ocean.

ike much of Southern California, Laguna Niguel has pleasant year-round weather with temperatures ranging from 67 to 79 degrees. Located less than a mile from the coast, Laguna Niguel residents are regularly treated to cool sea breezes and the Santa Ana winds. The City also enjoys a low crime rate, and is considered to be one of the safest cities in Orange County. Beyond the near perfect weather, Laguna Niguel has seemingly unlocked the secret for great coastal living in slow, easy style. Residents have the perfect mix of amenities and incredible outdoor recreational options backed by thriving retail, dining, and entertainment choices. With a family

friendly vibe, the city’s distinctive lifestyle and smaller size help foster a strong sense of community. As one of the first master-planned communities in America, Laguna Niguel boasts a lot of open green space, which distinguishes it from other areas. In fact, more than one-third of the City is permanently designated as open space. Coupled with city and county parks that are connected by a handful of walking trails that meander through or around the City’s many neighborhoods, and an extensive trail system running throughout the community, it’s easy to see why so many call Laguna Niguel home. An exceptional quality of life has become a standard in Laguna Niguel,

and the City has plenty to offer area residents and visitors. With a well thought out design and superior infrastructure to support current and future residential and business requirements, the City has also become a hub to meet many of the resident’s service, shopping, and dining needs, and is home to over 20 retail centers with more than 500 retail businesses and restaurants. Access is easy, too. Los Angeles and San Diego are just an hour’s drive away. Los Angeles and Riverside are also quick destinations via Metrolink, and residents can catch the Orange County Line and the Inland Empire Orange County Line from the Metrolink station in Laguna Niguel. Laguna Niguel’s assets go far beyond the obvious and make the most of the area’s incredible scenery and fantastic weather. In fact, not only do the 66,000+ residents enjoy an upscale, but laid-back lifestyle in a safe community with stunning natural beauty at every angle, they have access to an incredible parks system. The City of Laguna Niguel’s Parks and Recreation Department doesn’t just promise to provide a wide variety of innovative, diverse and inclusive recreational and cultural opportunities which enhance the quality of life for residents of Laguna Niguel, it delivers. With two community parks, 25 neighborhood parks, six community sports parks, a dog park, and a skate and soccer park, the City boasts phenomenal neighborhood parks providing residents with plenty of options for an afternoon stroll, a picnic, or to just enjoy some time in the sun.

Focused on the growing community’s current and future facility needs, the Parks and Recreation Department cooperates in the planning and scheduling of the City’s Capital Improvement Program. The Laguna Niguel Parks & Recreation Master Plan was originally adopted in 1989 and updated in 1998. It serves as an overall guide to the expansion of recreation programs and the construction and improvement of City parks and recreational facilities. Crown Valley Park attracts about a quarter of a million visitors annually and serves as the center of Laguna Niguel Parks and Recreation activities. Home to Crown Valley Community Pool, the Laguna Niguel Family YMCA, sprayground and the City’s aquatics activities, the Park has recently undergone extensive renovations and improvements.

With two community parks, 25 neighborhood parks, six community sports parks, a dog park, and a skate and soccer park, the City provides residents with plenty of options.

JUST COMPLETED On August 8, 2017, the City celebrated the completion of Tier II of the Crown Valley Park Improvement Project. New additions and upgrades to the park include a new culvert crossing, which replaced the existing dip crossing so that the park entry does not need to be closed due to flooding during large rainstorms. The new bridge also includes decorative lighting, along with sidewalks and bike lanes on each side to enhance pedestrian safety and access to the park. A new decorative metal archway spanning across the entry drive was also constructed to highlight the entrance to the park. In addition, two new parking lots with convenient access from Crown Valley Parkway were added. A new entry monument sign with enhanced raised planters and landscaping was also built to highlight the new entry.

LAGUNA NIGUEL

COMING SOON With the Tier II improvements complete, the City is looking ahead to their future plans for the park, and currently has the new Crown Valley Park Community Center in the design phase. The 30,000-square foot threestory building will include: • Staff Offices • Art Room • Fitness and Dance Room • Collaborative Tech Room • Multi-Purpose Room with a 300-Person Dining Capacity • Catering Kitchen • Multi-Purpose Classrooms Continued on page 12...

BASKETBALL AT THE YMCA From Father’s Day to summer camp the YMCA has a rich history in shaping our nation. “Innovation and impact are in the Y’s DNA,” says YMCA of the USA CEO Kevin Washington. “For more than 160 years, the Y has delivered lasting personal and social change by listening to communities and providing innovative, effective solutions to community needs.” One of the innovations the Y is credited with is the formation and growth of basketball. In 1891 James Naismith, the father of American basketball, developed the game at the YMCA using a soccer ball and peach baskets while looking for an indoor winter sport.

Today the Y serves over 10,000 neighborhoods in the US where basketball is a program staple, including our local branch the Laguna Niguel Family YMCA. The Laguna Niguel YMCA offers adult and youth basketball programming year round including leagues, classes, camps and clinics. Over 900 people participate in Y basketball programs at the branch each year. “The Y is a great place for youth to learn the game of basketball and also learn character values for off the court at the same time,” says Laguna Niguel Executive Director Jennifer Heinen. “It is also validating to see players who make it to the college and professional level after growing up at the Y.”

The Laguna Niguel Family YMCA is located within Crown Valley Community Park and offers a full fitness facility and offsite childcare programs at local elementary schools. In addition to a beautiful gymnasium, the location has something for the entire family to stay active and healthy. A family membership at the YMCA offers free on-site childcare while you work out, a Pilates Reformer Studio, over 70 group exercise classes a week, free youth fitness classes, cardio & weight equipment, lap swimming, and more. To take a tour of our local YMCA please call (949) 495-YMCA.

SURFERS, SEALs AND SOCCER MOMS – PILATES REALLY IS FOR EVERYONE. I first heard the word “Pilates” 15 years ago and I am sure I pronounced it wrong then, so here it is: “puh-laht-eez”. Like the word, it was mysterious and exotic, the favored exercise of Gwyneth and Madonna. Back then it felt like the exclusive domain of superstars and supermodels, not for your average fitness seeker. Much has changed. Today, over 10 million people practice Pilates in the United States, and Pilates is now the fastest growing and most sought-after form of group exercise among women in health clubs across the U.S. Pilates has recently exploded on the health and wellness scene the same way Yoga reached a mainstream audience over the last 20 years. There are plenty of parallels: like Yoga, Pilates increases flexibility and strength through

the entire range of motion. It improves mental focus as well as depth and rhythm of breathing. It re-aligns the body and corrects posture, giving practitioners that long and lean look, the so-called “Pilates body” that attracted those Hollywood A-listers so many years ago. But at the core of Pilates (and there is a lot of “core” in Pilates) is the notion that it is an exercise regimen that promotes functional movement and positions us to do all of the things we want to do, whether that’s play with our kids, swing a golf club or catch a wave. Pilates uses a number of machines with strange names like the “Reformer” or “Exo-Chair,” but they all implement springs or pulleys so that you are gently and smoothly moving against resistance and your own body weight – just like you do in everyday life. “I think the first thing that attracted me to Pilates was how approachable it is, that anyone can do it,” says Keely Watson, who owns five Club Pilates studios in Southern California and has practiced and taught Pilates for 10 years. “Pilates is low-impact–gentle on knees, necks and backs—and it’s a great way to get in shape, building strength and flexibility as well as improving balance and posture,” says Watson. “Our clients include people just starting on their fitness journey, pre-natal moms, and individuals with back, hip or knee problems.” w w w. L N C h amb er. co m

The second thing that attracted her? “That it absolutely kicked my butt! Pilates can be dialed all the way up to challenge athletes of all levels. A lot of clients we work with use Pilates to complement their core sports, so we’re seeing a lot of surfers and golfers coming in these days. When we started in San Diego we worked with a few Navy SEALs who looked to Pilates for injury prevention and general strength training. Those guys need to be agile, strong and flexible. But this is true for everyone.” Club Pilates Laguna Niguel offers a free introductory class, group classes and private instruction.

CITY & REGIONAL

PARKS Something For Everyone

A

park is the center of the community and a great hub where families and neighbors can interact with one another. It’s a space for community events. It’s a place to move from sedentary to active lifestyles. It’s also the perfect place to create childhood memories, and enjoy a picnic, summer concert, or a movie. In Laguna Niguel, parks bring value to the community and are some of the City’s most coveted assets, offering dozens of diverse recreational activities and providing a place for residents and visitors to relax and enjoy the area’s natural surroundings.

Beyond the role of recreation and social well-being, parks help local economies, combat crime, and reduce environmental impacts, which is why the City regularly invests in its local parks and their amenities. In 2017, park improvements included:

LAGUNA NIGUEL BOASTS OF: • 2 County Regional Parks • 2 County Parks • 25 Neighborhood Parks • 2 Community Parks • 6 Community Sports Parks • Pooch Park • Skate & Soccer Park

• Laguna Niguel Skate Park Upgrades: Fences were painted and cracked concrete surfaces were repaired giving the 20,000 square foot skateboard park a fresh look.

22 I

LAGUNA NIGUEL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

• Basketball Court Resurfacing: The City resurfaced basketball courts at Marina Hills, Ocean Breeze, Hidden Hills, and Laguna Niguel Skate and Soccer Parks, as well as the four full courts near the Federal Building, breathing new life into the community’s outdoor recreational scene.

• Pickleball Courts: A cross between badminton and tennis, Pickleball I

is easy to learn and is growing in popularity. Families that like to have fun, laugh, and exercise together now have their choice of four pickleball courts at Laguna Niguel Regional Park. County Park entrance fees apply. • Shade Structures: New shade structures were installed at Crown Valley Park Playground and Hidden Hills Park, making a big difference for park guests on hot summer days and prolonging the life of playground equipment and rubber surfaces. The Parks and Recreation Department is making the most of the great outdoors as it continues to offer an abundance of fun and countless family-oriented activities for people of all ages this year. To see

a complete list of City and County parks, amenities, calendar of events, and trail maps, visit the City’s website at www.CityofLagunaNiguel.org. CROWN VALLEY PARK IMPROVEMENTS – CONSTRUCTION CONTINUES August 8, 2017, marked the completion of Tier II Park improvements at Crown Valley Park. On this momentous day, more than 100 people celebrated the second of three major renovation phases and saw the City’s investment in making this Park an attractive and inviting place for community members and future generations to enjoy for years to come! Completed improvements included a new culvert crossing that replaced a previous dip crossing. This means the Park entry does not need to be closed anymore due to flooding during heavy rainstorms. The bridge also features decorative lighting, along with sidewalks and bike lanes on each side to enhance pedestrian safety and access to the Park. A new decorative and branded metal archway was added across the entryway to highlight the

entrance to the Park. In addition, a digital electronic marquee was installed at the Park entrance to promote City events and recreation programs. The celebration also marked the completion of two new parking lots with convenient access from Crown Valley Parkway, adding approximately 66 parking spaces for visitors. The north lot is accessible from the Park entry road and will be convenient for softball and lower soccer field users. The south lot has direct access from Crown Valley Parkway and will be convenient for upper soccer field and trail users. A new staircase will also provide direct access to the upper soccer field. Restoration of the creek, water quality improvements, and the conversion of the Niguel Botanical Preserve from potable to reclaimed water rounded out Tier II improvements. The next phase, Tier III of the Improvement Project, is currently under design by LPA Inc., and will include a 30,000-square foot Crown Valley Park Community Center with staff offices and rooms that the public

will be able to rent for their special events. The three-story building will have a contemporary look and feature a dedicated art room, fitness and dance room, collaborative tech room, multi-purpose room with a 300-person dining capacity and catering kitchen, and multi-purpose classrooms. The lower aquatics level features locker rooms with private changing areas and classrooms that open to the pool deck. The upper level will feature an outdoor rooftop patio overlooking the pool. A festival plaza and other pedestrian-oriented amenities are also in the planning phases, as well as a realignment of the main drive aisle and parking next to the new building. There will also be some modest exterior improvements to the Cityowned YMCA building. The City expects to begin construction of the new Community Center in summer 2018, with the goal of completing the final phase of the project in early 2020. It was the second year in a row that the District has outranked the rest of the state’s top ten largest districts, which include Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco. Two of the three CUSD high schools have also been awarded a silver medal and named as “Best High Schools 2017” by US News & World Report. CITY NEWS HELP KEEP YOUR COMMUNITY CRIME FREE – JOIN NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

Neighborhood Watch, Crime Watch – whatever the name, it’s one of the most effective and least costly ways to prevent crime and reduce fear. Neighborhood Watch fights the isolation upon which crime both feeds and creates. It forges bonds among area residents, helps reduce burglaries and robberies, and improve relations between police and the community they serve.

TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR BUSINESS SAFE

Los Angeles and Orange Counties have been seeing increased incidences of burglaries and Laguna Niguel is not immune to that. Most burglars and thieves are opportunists and select targets that offer them the opportunity to carry out the crime undetected, with the fewest obstacles in the way. As business owners and merchants, here are some tips to increase security and deter criminals from eyeing your business: Install motion detection lights around the perimeter of your business to increase visibility and reduce hiding areas for criminals. Install infrared cameras near access points to monitor your business and patrons. An infrared camera will capture specific details of suspects during the day or night. Most camera systems allow people to view videos from virtually anywhere on their smartphones or tablets. Make sure cameras are working and are not only used as a deterrent. It is recommended to archive security footage for at least one month. Make frequent cash deposits and limit the amount of money left in your business overnight. The most common items stolen are cash and cash registers. Purchase a safe, bolt it down, and lock currency inside it during off business hours. Know your neighboring businesses and join Business Watch – a free program that provides safety education and networking opportunities. Business Watch hosts meetings with presentations on topics such as robbery and burglary prevention, self-protection, vandalism prevention, emergency preparedness, and more. To get started, contact Laguna Niguel Police Services at (949) 362-4346. 32 I

Why Neighborhood Watch? • It works! Throughout the country, dramatic decreases in burglary and related offenses are reported in communities with active programs. • Protect your family and property! Many families have working parents and children involved in many activities that keep them away from home. An empty house in a neighborhood where none of the neighbors know the owner is a prime target for burglary. How Does a Neighborhood Watch Start? A motivated individual or a few concerned residents, can spearhead the efforts to establish a Neighborhood Watch. A Crime Prevention Specialist will come to your neighborhood watch meetings and share valuable information about home/vacation/vehicle security tips. In addition, learn how to identify suspicious activity, how to provide suspect information when calling the Sheriff ’s Department, and much more! To start or to reactivate a Neighborhood Watch program, contact Crime Prevention Specialist Kimberly Sawyer at (949) 362-4305 or at ksawyer@ocsd.org.

PREVENT PROBLEMS CAUSED BY DISCHARGING POLLUTION INTO WATERBODIES You and your business play an important role in preventing pollution in our waterbodies. When it rains or when water flows off of our properties, it gets collected by the storm drain system where it picks up dirt, trash, debris, sediment, chemicals, and other pollutants and then flows untreated into our creeks, rivers, bays, and the ocean. Help preserve the environment and improve water quality by doing simple things as part of your daily business activities:

1 2

Keep your business and its surrounding areas clean.

Keep the trash dumpster lids closed and preferably under a shelter.

5

Never wash tools, dirt, debris, trash, or spilled material down the storm drain.

6 3

Protect your storm drain inlets from pollution. Remember, “Only Rain Down the Storm Drain.”

4

Keep a spill cleanup kit ready and easily accessible if you store or use chemicals, oil, fuel, and similar products. Use dry methods to clean up spills whenever possible.

Train staff regularly to be prepared for these best practices.

Inspections as mandated by the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System Permit issued to cities and counties by regional and state authorities under a federal program. The City conducts business inspections and inspectors will examine facilities and provide guidance on ways to achieve permit compliance. For more information, visit www.CityofLagunaNiguel.org or call (949) 362-4337. Let’s work together to keep our local creeks, watersheds, and the ocean clean!

SUSTAINABLE WASTE MANAGEMENT FOR YOUR BUSINESS What type of trash does your business generate? Maybe it’s mostly paper, some cardboard, bottles, cans, and some food scraps from the break room. Or if you own a restaurant, perhaps most of your waste is food scraps and cardboard products. All of these “waste” materials aren’t truly waste because they can all be recycled. Most businesses are required by law to divert these materials away from the landfill. CR&R Waste Services offers recycling programs at a reduced rate when compared to equivalent trash service. The City’s partnership with local businesses helps comply with California laws governing solid waste and recycling. • Assembly Bill 939: The City is required to divert 50% of their waste away from landfills. CR&R reported that businesses, residents, and building projects diverted over 30,000 tons of materials away from the landfill

in 2016. This equates to a 53% diversion rate for the City. • Assembly Bill 341: Commercial businesses that generate 4+ cubic yards of trash per week and multifamily properties with 5 or more units are required to implement recycling programs. • Assembly Bill 1826: Food service establishments that generate four or more yards of organic waste (i.e. food scraps, produce trimmings, plate scrapings, etc.) are required w w w. L N C hamb er. co m

to have a food waste recycling program in place by the end of 2016. In Laguna Niguel, sustainable waste management such as recycling, reuse, and composting is not only good for the environment, but it is also good for your bottom line. If you would like help implementing a cost-effective waste reduction or recycling program, contact CR&R’s Sustainability Coordinator, Karla Del Rosario at karlad@crrmail.com or at (714) 372-8257. I
