What We Celebrate
O Lord Jesus, So that Your sacrifice on the cross may be told to everyone, You willed that it should be made new again on the altar. During the Last Supper, You said, “Do this in remembrance of Me.” By these words, You gave Your apostles and the leaders who were next to them the power to remember and imitate what You Yourself did. I believe that the Mass is both a sacrifice and a memorial. It reenacts Your passion, death, and resurrection. Help me realize that the Mass represents Your greatest gift to us and our most sincere prayer to You. Amen.
Do you have a prayer that you would like to share? Send your prayer/s to: The Editor, Young Messenger, 4/F SEDCCO 1 Bldg., 120 Thailand corner Legazpi Sts., Legaspi Village, Makati City or e-mail it to youngmessenger@diwamail.com. drian quickly noticed how cool it was inside the church. “Brrr! It’s freezing in here,” he whispered to Ate Bianca. Bianca pointed to the air conditioners lined up along the walls. “Welcome to China,” Ate Bianca teased. “Good thing we brought our jackets.” The two looked around them curiously. This was the first church outside the Philippines they had ever been to. It was a lot different from the one they had in their parish in Sampaloc. Every corner was brightly lit by lovely crystal lamps. They followed their parents toward a pew near the front. Soon everyone stood up. The priest marched toward the altar as the choir started singing. Bianca and her brother exchanged amused looks. The choir was singing a familiar Mass song. When the priest started speaking, the two looked at their parents in dismay. They had gone to a Chinese Mass! Adrian looked at his sister in confusion. Bianca shrugged and followed their parents’ lead. Adrian decided he might as well do the same. The Mass lasted one hour. On their way back to the hotel, Adrian asked if his parents understood Chinese. “Not a word,” Dad admitted with a laugh.

“But you seemed to know exactly what was going on during the Mass,” insisted Adrian. China has more than a billion people—the largest population among all countries. The exact number of Christians in China is unknown. There are only estimates: • •
“So did you and Bianca,” said Mom. “You knew when to stand, sit, and kneel down. You knew when it was time to exchange the sign of peace, receive communion, and make the sign of the cross.” Adrian stopped in surprise. It was true! Even

“It’s because the Mass, the Holy Eucharist, is done the same way in every Catholic church in the
world. It’s been that way for centuries,” replied Mom. “Who made it that way?” asked Adrian. “Jesus did!” Mom and Dad said together. “Jesus instituted the Holy Eucharist during the Last Supper with His disciples,” explained Dad. “The prayer and format evolved over the centuries. But the words that priests use to consecrate the bread and wine are the same ones Jesus spoke in the Last Supper.” “Jesus commanded His disciples to celebrate the Holy Eucharist,” added Mom. “Anywhere you go you’ll find the Holy Eucharist being celebrated the same way.” “No wonder it seemed familiar,” said Bianca. “And I thought you knew Chinese!” joked Adrian.

es, you can make wonderful art using eggshells from your kitchen! Try this activity; you can decorate cards and papers colorfully. Have patience while you make this activity. Ask Mom or Dad to help you out. Have fun!
What you will need:
• • • • • • • •
eggshells dye or food coloring (one or two colors) plastic containers water glue cardboard or paper roller pin, pestle, or pounder rubber or plastic gloves
REMEMBER! Ask your mom or dad’s help when you dye the eggshells.
What you will do
1. Ask your mom to save all the eggshells from cooking or from boiled eggs. Wash the shells thoroughly and dry them in the sun. 2. When you have collected many shells, dye them in batches using different colors. Use rubber or plastic gloves while dyeing, so that the color won’t stick to your skin. Let the shells dry again after dyeing. 3. Crush the eggshells with a roller pin or a pestle. Use a towel so that bits of the shells will not scatter around. Collect and sort the crushed shells and store them in separate containers. 4. Draw on your cardboard or paper any design you like. Apply a layer of strong glue on your design. Then, instead of using crayons or pens, carefully sprinkle each of the crushed colored eggshells onto your drawing. Let the glue dry and you have a threedimensional (3D) art to hang in your room!

epoy changed into a pair of shorts and an old shirt as soon as he and his family got home from church. His Ate Irene watched suspiciously as Jepoy quickly packed some stuff into his backpack. Hmm . . . I wonder what my little brother is up to, thought Irene. Jepoy glanced at Irene with a mischievous grin on his face. “You know me too well, Ate Irene.” He looked around to make sure their parents weren’t around. “You’re not going to tell on me, are you?” “Even if I wanted to, how could I? I have no idea what you’re up to,” said Irene. She was sure Jepoy was going to play a practical joke on someone. He loved to do that. But she didn’t know what exactly her brother’s plan and who his target was. “That’s why I’m keeping it a secret,” Jepoy said gleefully. Irene shrugged. “Well, whatever it is, dear brother, I hope you remember where we just came from and what we just did.” Then she flashed Jepoy a mysterious smile and started to walk away. Jepoy called after her. “Hey, Ate! What do you mean by that?” Irene turned around to face her brother. “We just came from the Holy Mass, remember? And if I’m not mistaken, you received communion along with Dad, Mom, and me.” Jepoy looked at her with a blank expression on his face. “So?” asked Jepoy.

“What does that have to do with my . . . uhmm . . . secret?” This time, Irene spoke in a serious but patient tone. “He said, ‘Go in peace to love and serve the Lord and your neighbor.’ Do you know what that means?” “I never really thought about it,” admitted Jepoy. Irene sighed. “It means that now we have received God’s love in the Holy Eucharist, we should spread that love to others. Through the priest, Jesus gave us His blessing so that we can do good every day. Then, we come back to church next Sunday to offer our good deeds to Him.” “But that’s like saying the Mass did not end . . . like our daily life is part of it,” wondered Jepoy. “It does not end, indeed,” followed Irene quickly. “The Mass isn’t just a Sunday activity. We live out what we learn and receive during the Mass in our daily life.” Jepoy was quiet. He seemed to be thinking What makes practical jokes not right? Diane waved back and made her way to Emily’s table. “Thanks for saving a seat for me,” she said. “What are friends for?” Emily replied with a smile. “Here. I bought you a pack of angel cookies, too.” Diane put up a grin while she sat down. “Angel cookies? I’ve never had those before. They look yummy,” she said. She opened the plastic package and took out a cookie. She was about to put it into her mouth. But suddenly she stopped and stared at the cookie in her hand. “What’s wrong?” asked Emily. “These are communion hosts, aren’t they?” Emily nodded in reply. She could not understand why her friend suddenly turned upset. “I cannot eat those!” Diane shook her head vigorously. “That would be sacrilege, a disrespect on the body of Christ!” Emily finally understood her friend’s concern. “No, it isn’t,” she assured. “Oh, yeah?” challenged Diane. “How sure are you?” “Very sure!” Emily replied confidently. “Sr. Florence herself told me.” Diane knew Sr. Florence was the manager of the school canteen. She also knew that Emily sometimes helped out in the kitchen. Emily took advantage of her friend’s silence to explain. “The stuff they use on angel cookies

Since this stuff is not consecrated, it’s just ordinary wafer.” “You mean it does not become Christ’s body and blood like the communion hosts?” asked Diane. The tone of her voice showed that she was still not convinced. “Don’t you remember what Sr. Karla said in our Religion class?” asked Emily. “It’s the power of the Holy Spirit and the words spoken by the priest during the Mass that transform the bread and wine into Christ’s body and blood.” She waved a hand in front of her friend’s face. “Hello? I can’t believe you forgot that. You kept asking Sr. Karla about it.” Diane’s face lit up. “You’re right. I kept asking her to explain . . .” “. . . and she kept saying it’s a mystery that is beyond explanation,” finished Emily. By Corazon Morilla “They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
From Luke 12:49-53 Sunday Gospel, August 19, 2007 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time
hat Jesus said in the Gospel may appear shocking at first reading. How could the Prince of Peace want fire to rain down on earth and cause division? Fire is associated with God and with how He moves in our lives. God appeared to Moses as a burning bush, remember? Fire is also used to represent God’s glory, holiness, and His wrath against sin. The Holy Spirit also came down upon Mary and the apostles on the first Pentecost in the form of tongue of fires. God is the fire that makes us pure and clean. Being a Christian is being loyal to Jesus Christ—whether you are for or against Christ. This loyalty should surpass relationship. When Jesus spoke about division, He wanted His love to compel us to choose Him over other people. Isn’t it idolatry if you put anyone or anything above God? Simply put, Jesus challenges us to examine whom we love first. A true Christian loves God above all else and is willing to leave all for Jesus Christ.

sn’t it wonderful if you are chosen to be the first member of a team? How about if you are chosen by Jesus to be the first disciple? That would be the greatest honor, right? The first follower of Jesus was the brother of St. Peter, the first pope. Just like St. Peter, the first disciple was a fisherman. He came from Bethsaida, a little town in the Galilee. He became Jesus’ first follower when Jesus said to him, “Come, follow Me.” And together with St. Peter, Jesus said, “I will make you fishers of men.” Who is the first disciple? Write in the blank the name of the apostle. Then pick the correct picture of the disciple, and color the picture.

arold was strolling in the park when he ran into Father Gerry. “Good afternoon, Father,” he greeted. “Good afternoon, Harold,” replied Fr. Gerry. The two knew each other well, because Harold sang in the choir and his parents served actively in the parish. “You’re just the person I wanted to see.” “Is it about that song you wanted us to learn, Father?” asked Harold. The priest shook his head. “No. I just wanted to ask you to remind your parents about the street Mass on Friday night. Your family will be hosting the weekly barangay Mass, you know.” Harold nodded vaguely. His parents had discussed the street Mass at dinner. But he had not really paid attention to their conversation. All he remembered was that the Mass would be held in front of their house. “You’ll need to prepare the table, chairs, candles, offerings . . .” Fr. Gerry ticked off the items on his hand as he spoke. “Oh, and food, of course.” Harold looked up at the priest in surprise. “Will the whole barangay be coming, Father?” The priest chuckled when he saw the worried look on Harold’s face. “Well, I don’t think the whole barangay will come. But the people on your street probably will.” Harold sighed in relief. “Phew! I thought we have to feed 100 people.” Fr. Gerry laughed. “Even if 100 would attend the Mass, you need not worry. The

What’s important is that we gather together as one family of God.” He winked playfully. “Anyway, the real meal takes place during the Holy Eucharist itself.” “Huh?” Harold was confused. He had never heard of a meal served during the Mass before. Sensing Harold’s confusion, Fr. Gerry explained, “During the Mass, the priest consecrates and distributes the host, right? “Exactly!” said Fr. Gerry. “In fact, the Holy Eucharist is three occasions in one. First, it’s a memorial of the Last Supper. Second, it’s a sacrament of love in Christ’s presence. Should I bring this book, Zach? No, leave that on the table. Just bring the communion cups.
How about that book?
It contains the scripture readings for the Mass. This is the book carried by the lector, right? What is it called again?
That is the lectionary. This one I’m holding is the Sacramentary. This contains the opening prayer, the prayer over the gifts, prayer after communion, solemn blessings, and Eucharistic prayers. Oops! Don’t forget to place the missalette on the table, too. That one contains all the parts of the Mass for a special occasion or season, just like this Sunday.
That is the Book of the Gospels. It contains, well, just the Gospels. It is primarily used in more solemn occasions.
Okay!
