Think Outside The Box!
Newproducts2012
Our resident I.T. Adviser John Donnelly of Salon Genius gives us some ideas on how to think more laterally.
Changing times mean changing attitudes. Customers all over the country have changed the way they view their salon which means that salon owners must change their ideas on attracting customers and start thinking outside the box. It’s no longer good enough to sit back and wait for clients to book in to the salon. Salon owners must think up ways of enticing new clients to the salon and, indeed existing clients back to the salon on a regular basis. Computer systems can help with this but the ideas must come from within and must be sufficiently innovative to get the attention of ever more discerning clients. Cross Marketing is one such idea. Clients love to get ‘something for nothing’. They feel happy leaving the salon if they feel they have got that little bit extra. It goes without saying that the treatment must be top class and the whole ‘salon experience’ has to have been worth it but the little bit extra might just be the deal clincher when it comes to that Client rebooking. Why not team up with other local businesses and give away their money off vouchers. Your clients would love a voucher for 20% off their next meal in the local restaurant or 10% off their next purchase in the local florist. These are sometimes described as ‘random acts of kindness’ but whatever way they are described, they mean you have a very happy client leaving your salon. Of course, your neighbouring businesses could reciprocate by offering vouchers for your salon to their clients. Better still, if you have a computer system in your salon and the local business has one in theirs, text a special offer to your clients offering them a special deal in the other business and let them do the same to their clients offering a deal in your salon. That way, both of you gain new customers. Recommend a friend has always been a sure-fire 10•••••Beauty Professional Ireland
way of getting new clients for the salon. It has to be done properly, however. There is nothing worse than someone recommending a friend to go and visit a salon only for that salon not to thank them for their good deed. Some Salon computer systems actually track recommend a friend vouchers. If a new client hands in one of these vouchers at reception, the computer instantly knows who gave them that voucher, sends them a text message to thank them and automatically gives them a discount when they next visit the salon. In this way, the client is more inclined to recommend more of her friends to your salon. Teaming up with other salons can also be beneficial to both businesses. Hair Salons could work on building crossover packages with the local beauty salon or nail bar and vice versa. Remember, the Client is interested in not only getting the best deal, but also minimising the hassle involved in getting everything done. Social media has become almost compulsory in the salon business. There are specialist marketing companies sprouting up all over the place specialising in social media marketing. Your salon software must be used in conjunction with social media sites. Online Bookings through facebook means your clients don’t even have to go to your website any more – they can book directly from your Facebook page 24/7. Try out some of your marketing ideas through facebook and see the response you get. If the response is good, roll it out to all your clients through the marketing function of your salon software. The marketing ideas people come up with are endless. They are also very very necessary in today’s challenging business environment. Every Salon owner must begin to think outside the box.

Be Creative! It is so important to be proud of your brand and give your client and the public the very best treatment. In turn, they will pass on that word of mouth positivity which is so important! Creative Academy are delighted to launch the CND Shellac™ Salon Certification Programme, which is designed to ensure that the public gets the correct CND Shellac™ pampering. BPI had a chat with them to get a good understanding on what the programme entails.
What is the programme? Salon clients across Ireland will soon be assured that the CND Shellac™ services they receive have CND’s official seal of approval. Rolling out from May 2012, The CND Shellac™ Salon Certification Programme will showcase salons that provide high quality CND Shellac™ services. It rewards Nail Professionals for proper techniques with the prestigious CND Shellac™ Certified Salons List. Why have CND and Creative Academy created such a programme? When you have a revolutionary product like CND Shellac™, there are sure to be “pretenders to the throne” - products that claim to be the same, and salons that claim to provide “Shellac” services, but are really using a lower quality product. Our aim is to bring in a premium level treatment with CND’s official seal of approval readily available to the Irish consumer. What does the Programme hope to change in the Irish marketplace? Unfortunately in Ireland five out of every ten women who ask for a CND Shellac™ Manicure – do not get a CND Shellac™ manicure! Consumers ask for the product by name and many are let down by what we like to call ‘Shellac Pretenders’. It’s important for the consumer to know how you can spot a phony and why it‘s important to demand the real “CND Shellac™”. As Nail Professionals and consumers can attest, not all nail services are created equal!
12•••••Beauty Professional Ireland
What are the benefits to being a certified CND Shellac™ Salon? For the consumer by choosing a CND Shellac™ Certified Salon she will: V Always receive the full CND Shellac™ service V Always pay the RRP of the treatment V Never be duped by a ‘shellac pretender’ For the salon they can V Flaunt their new-found fabulousness and nail wisdom as a certified superior nail professional! V Consumers will be driven into their business as Certified salons will be listed on our New consumer Smartphone friendly website shellac.ie V Creative Academy will launch a Consumer Campaign later this year advertising only CND Shellac™ Certified Salons V Salons will receive exclusive special offers from Creative Academy V Certified Salons will receive CND Shellac™ “Certified Salon” window salon signage and a CND Shellac™ Certified Salon Certificate. It sounds like a great way to reinforce the quality of the brand in both salons and the public‘s minds. Do you feel there is a demand for a certification process like this in Ireland? Absolutely! Everyday we are contacted by disgruntled members of the public who asked for a CND Shellac™ service and were lied to. The consumer has gradually started to recognise what the CND Shellac™ bottles look like and are more aware than ever if a salon is not offering the correct service or following the recommended CND step by steps. There is a growing problem with counterfeit products, as we have highlighted in this issue in our BPI Expose section. Why are there so many imitation brands appearing on the market? In February 2012 AdAge declared CND Shellac™ Power Polish as one of America’s 25 Hottest Brands of 2011, hailing CND for revolutionising the market with the no-chip nail colour. CND Shellac™ the only two week manicure that is safe for natural nails and comes off in less than ten minutes, is a winner among Nail Professionals and industry media alike. Lauded for its patent-pending formula, packaging and enticing colour range, the prestigious industry awards for this miracle manicure speak for themselves; that, in a nutshell is why we’re being copied so much. This program will definitely go a long way to helping put a stop to it!

The product also contains Sol-Collagenine, an anti-aging complex, which fights against wrinkles and fine lines. How to Use: Use daily, reapplying after swimming. Consultation Feature
The Bridal Beauty Menu In the second part of our bridal special Anne McDevitt shows how you can create a beauty menu for brides. Like all plans, if they stick to it they will look their very best on the big day! There are many ways you can be creative in attracting a bridal party. For example; an initial consultation for the bride, during which you outline your ideas and treatments plan for the lead up to the day. Tick off the treatments that are best to have close to the wedding and those that must be given plenty of distance from the event. Plan Well In Advance V Hair removal: the bride or bridegroom may see her/his wedding as motivation to tackle a long term problem. Electrolysis or laser must be done well in advance and any tidy up treatments should be done no less that two weeks before the big day (excessive hair problems will be an exception, but the therapist will manage the course of treatment to ensure no skin breakouts). V Red vein removal or treatment: red or thread veins should be timed so that the last treatment is at least four weeks before the big day. As most people need approximately three treatments, start at least four months before the event. V Laser Rejuvenation is best started three to four months in advance. It gives great results for fine lines or those concerned with scar marks or pitting from previous acne. Yellow dye lasers require three treatments over three months. The last one to be at least 2-3 weeks before the wedding. V Leg Veins should be tackled at the beginning of the winter before the wedding, as support tights need to be worn for a period of time. V Natural Nails on the day may require retraining. To grow strong nails it may take up to three months, recommend magnesium and zinc as supplements 450mg and 45mg daily respectively. Sources of magnesium are wheat germ (removed from most breads and cereals), almonds, buckwheat, garlic, raisins. For zinc eat oysters, haddock, dry split peas, turnips. The best supplement is sulphur in the form of MSM methyl-sulphonyl- methane. It builds cartilage strength and keratin from which nails grow. Sulphur is rich in raw sprouted foods or take a supplement of 1000mg-2000mg MSM per day. 18•••••Beauty Professional Ireland
Lash Smart
We caught up with Claire McElhinney of Inish Beauty and Laser Clinic in Co. Donegal. Claire recently completed a course in lash extensions with Lashperfect. Why Eyelash Extensions? I qualified as a beauty therapist with CIDESCO and CIBTEC qualifications a number of years ago and was looking for that something “Extra” to add to my CV. I took a look around and did some research. I was fascinated with the idea of eyelash extensions and absolutely loved what a difference the extensions made to all age groups of people In Ireland at the time there were not that many Eyelash extension technicians but I decided that if I had that fascination with extensions so would other people. Why Lashperfect? I googled and found that Lashperfect were the largest eyelash extension company in the UK and so I contacted them to see if there was a Irish Distributor, there was and I contacted Anne from BAAM cosmetics to organise training.
Close To The Big Day V Waxing: should be booked 48 hours in advance of the wedding. V Manicure: the day before (preferably late in the day) if not on the morning of the wedding V Facial: this one is just to give the complexion a glow for the day; no extractions. V Massage: one to two days before helps deepen the sleep and relax the body; relaxed brides are more likely to glow! The weeks or months leading up to the wedding can take their toll. Not all are good time managers. For some it can seem as though there is lots of time, which suddenly runs out - leading to stress. If you provide programmes or packages you can take some of the planning away from the bride and help her to look healthy and glowing on one of the most important days of her life.

What does training consist of? Prior to the Training day I received by post a pre-training day information booklet which contained information on safety, patch testing, contraindications and hygiene. The training was a full day after which I had to complete five case studies. The day was split into three sections, consisting of theory (contraindications, eye-care, product knowledge etc), then practicing with tweezers on mannequins and strip lashes and finally a third section where we practiced on real life models. At the end of the day we received our Eyelash extension kits and a very comprehensive training manual to bring home with us.
Were the case studies beneficial? I felt to have to do five case studies after the course was a great idea because you were able to get up to speed and get to grips with dealing with different kinds of natural lashes. Once my case studies were completed I returned them to the trainer and I was certified for insurance purposes. Another aspect of Lashperfect training that I liked was the fact that the training was BABTEC and the GUILD was accredited and it was not just some Mickey Mouse course! Also the trainer was available to answer any queries by phone in the weeks after the training if any issues arose. Practice makes perfect with eyelashes! That‘s the general feedback? Yes, I practiced and became very good at applying eyelash extensions and my customers in Dublin where I was working at the time became totally addicted. It was great to be able to experiment with the different types of lashes that can be used (B curl, C curl, D curl and J curl) and also the different colours available for that extra special look! And you became an eyelash instructor yourself? Sometime after I did an advanced course with Lashperfect and became a trainer myself. It was another way to be involved in the beauty industry. I trained therapists all over the country and enjoyed the travel involved and meeting different therapists. I now have my own salon and still do a huge amount of lash extensions. They are brilliant for every age group. I even did lash extensions on a 78 year old and she was absolutely thrilled with them and they looked fantastic! Now as an employer when I am recruiting it is always a bonus to see on someone’s CV that they have Lash extension training. As a trainer myself I always look to see where the person has been trained as it is imperative that the training is from a reputable company like Lashperfect. Would I recommend Lashperfect Eyelash Extension Training? As a lash technician and an employer - Absolutely!

BPI Expose
Stop The Poison! It‘s a very scary prospect that negative word of mouth could damage your brand‘s identity when it‘s not even your product! In this issue‘s “Expose” we look at the worrying trend of counterfeit beauty goods and, more importantly - how to stop it! We often watch programmes such as the popular “Customs” on RTE and presume that Irish Customs and Revenue Officials mainly deal with drug and cigarette smuggling. What we don’t realise is the hard work they put in trying to stamp out the trafficking of counterfeit beauty products into the country. Custom officials said the haul from last year was a 20% increase on 2010 with over 6,000 fake make-up products hauled. When these and other beauty products (including fake 21 day manicure and other nail products) were inspected they were found to contain cosmetically useless ingredients, and worse - dangerous compounds which could damage nails, cause serious skin reactions or even blood poisoning. If this is your product or brand that you believe in and have invested in, then it’s time to get angry! Some lip products purporting to be MAC were found to have cadmium and even lead in them! These products are mainly destined for weekend markets. So if you’re a make-up artist browsing around at a stall and you think you’re getting a bargain, think again! If it seems too good to be true - then it usually is! The Impact on the Industry The bottom line on counterfeit beauty goods is that it is no different to the seedy world of drugs, they come from a criminal underworld where people are enslaved to make them and disgusting additives are put in to bulk them up. Ultimately, they harm people. Counterfeit beauty goods are no different and can damage our industry. Dublin Airport customs manager Shay Doyle, urged that beauty parlours also need to be on the look out for fake cosmetics being sold as the real deal: “If it’s cheap, chances are it’s not the real product, but there are also people selling false products at genuine prices. These people are absolute criminals - members of the public are being duped into purchasing fake items for the genuine product’s price.” Mr Doyle added he would encourage people to support genuine local business. “Chances are the people selling fake goods are paying very little tax and, by buying the fake items, shoppers are pumping money into the black economy. This has a huge impact on Irish jobs and smaller businesses.” 20•••••Beauty Professional Ireland
What Can We Do to Stop It? 1 If you think an establishment or online business is using counterfeit products (with or without their knowledge) there are two options. If you are a distributor of a brand or a franchisee you can either contact them directly and draw attention to the situation or you can instruct your Solicitor to send an initial “Cease and Desist” letter if the copyright or patent of the product is threatened. This will allow someone enough time to correct their situation if they didn't realise that they were breaking the law. If you are ignored, then contact Revenue and Customs on the Customs Confidential Freefone 1800 295 295. They may require Gardai assistance with operations if they believe the situation to be criminal in nature. Many stories have been brought to our attention; where persons have been selling nail or make-up products through social media which are “passed-off” as authentic brands. If you come across such offerings be aware that they may not be the real deal. If you do come across these deals - for the good of our industry, jobs and your business contact the original distributor or customs. Remember, this affects everyone!
That number again: Customs Confidential Freefone 1800 295 295.

Bodypainting Special It was a sunny Sunday afternoon on the 11th of March when BPI Editor Lucy Earley went to meet renowned body painter Raquel Guirro where she was holding a workshop in Mad Art Gallery on Gardiner Street. Raquel Guirro worked on the critically acclaimed film ‚Pan‘s Labyrinth‘. She took direction from the renowned director Guillermo Del Toro and worked on building the magical characters with prosthetics and bodypaint. There was no mystery that attendance at her masterclasss in Dublin on the 11th of March was very high. Raquel was in the middle of applying prosthestics the students have made on her model Rosyln Fuller when I arrived. The class was a very comprehensive bodypainting workshop where students were shown how to make molded and flat prosthetics, brush and sponge techniques and bald caps to fit headpieces. Rosyln pictured in these photos is a very passionate bodypainting model who travels with Raquel to showcase her work. I really enjoyed the class and I think that the students were definitely getting a good grounding in bodypainting and enjoyed the prosthetics building. I took a few photos but as Raquel was practically naked when we arrived I wanted to showcase the finished bodypainting work here! About Raquel. Bodypainter: Raquel Guirro Raquel is a bodypainter and special effects technician based in Barcelona. She works mainly in film 32•••••Beauty Professional Ireland
and was part of a team which won an Oscar for the special effects/bodypainting work on the critically acclaimed film Pan‘s Labyrinth in 2007. Some facts about bodypainting: The World Body painting championships are taking pace in Pörtschach am Wörthersee, Austria from the 2nd to the 8th of July 2012. The World Bodypainting Festival has been running in Austria since 1998, attracting the world‘s finest bodypainters. It takes seven and a half hours to apply the paint for competition, after which judging takes place, followed by a live dance performance and photoshoot. Most bodypaint models are small, because the artist can paint them faster, leaving more time to concentrate on detail! They are frequently athletes or have an athletic history, as the prosthetics and headpieces can be extremely heavy. Bodypaint is among the world‘s oldest forms of decoration and embellishment of human beauty. Many tribal peoples today still practice the art of intricate bodypaint. Today, bodypaint is used in film, stage performance and, increasingly, in the fashion industry (model Heidi Klum has been feautured in bodypaint on a number of occasions, while Demi Moore, famously posed in a bodypainted “suit” on the cover of Vanity Fair).

2 Air brush effects without the airbrush, created using the brand new Gel paints now available from Be Cre-ative. Using one stroke technique this design will be a dream to put on and a delight to wear. This design can be created in a number of different ways, using acrylic paints, or airbrushing. You could even achieve this look through regular hard gel application or even a simple acrylic blending. But I have simplified the whole process for you, and with a few simple stokes you can achieve this perfect air-brushed effect, which not only slims the nail down and makes it seem longer, but it means you can save your self a lot of time in the salon. Step 1: Prepare the natural nail, remove the non living tissue and apply a sculpting for or a tip. For this design I have extended the nail bed and applied a clear free edge in acrylic. Step 2: To make it easier to show you in these steps, I have removed the sculpting form, however you do not need to do this at this stage in your application process. Using the gel paints, mix up a baby blue ( or an alternative colour if you wish), place a small amount on a non stick surface along with some white. The gel paint works like a paint so colours will easily blend
36•••••Beauty Professional Ireland
together, but it has the benefits of a gel, giving you more control and confidence over application. Using a flat square brush, preferably one which is stiff, divide the two colours, much like when starting one stroke. Step 3: Gently in short stokes apply the gel paint to the free edge of your nail, in a half moon, so that the blue is on the outside. When your happy with the depth of colour then flash cure before moving onto the other side. I would advice you complete all 10 fingers before completing the other side. You may need a couple of coats at this stage. Step 4: Repeat step 3, reversing the application and cure for 2 mins under a UV lamp or 30 seconds under an LED. Make sure you apply the gel paint thinly, you must press and apply like you would paint, not gel. Once you have cured, then apply a thin layer of clear gel and refine and finish the shape. Step 5: Cap the nail in a gel finish top coat. The gel paint does not self level which makes it perfect to apply over the top of a design and will really give you an interesting effect. Using a dotting tool, add small beads of gel over one side of the nail, varying the sizes. These will end up looking like dew drops, and high light the delicate design. Cure for the full 2 mins or 30 seconds under an LED lamp.

What makes CherryB wax different to others on the market? The fundamental difference is its low melting and working point, it is cool to the touch and thus reduces the risk of burning the skin. As it is an oil and wax system the wax sits on the oil not directly on the skin which significantly reduces discomfort. CherryB can be reapplied to the skin and will remove all types of hair from the lightest to the most stubborn short hair. It is a more relaxed experience for both the therapist and client as there is no need to stretch the skin and there is no risk of bruising, another benefit is the reduction in regrowth. How long are you in the beauty business? We are over five years in the beauty industry and commenced developing CherryB wax a year ago.
Tell us a little more about the other products? There are three additional products which used in conjunction with the cool wax will clean, prepare and care for the skin. They contain oils such as Tea Tree and Lavender which provide the best anti-fungal, antibacterial, soothing and healing properties. We also have a range of strip and roller wax.
Precision Waxing
What aromas is the wax available in? We have three aromas - Rose, Lavender and Very Berry which is my personal favourite and clients always comment on the lovely scent in the treatment room. In a sentence how would you describe CherryB? No Ouch! So what else can we expect from CherryB We will continue to expand the range in line. with therapist and client expectations and also launch a range of retail aftercare products. So how do we contact you? You can email us on info@cherryb.ie or contact us on 087 1724194

Salon Review
Great Vibes!
We talk to Kassy Lucas of Beauty by Kassy in Tullow, Co. Carlow the iFit Vibroplate.
The next generation of i.Fit vibration training
How have you incorporated iFit into your current beauty business? The iFit has slotted flawlessly into our salon. Our salon carries out all sorts of beauty treatments and we had previously to this machine carried a Vibroplate. We offered a free treatment to every client that entered our doors and we can safely say that 90% of clients whom tried the machine have purchased a course. When they try the machine you can really feel it working so it is feasible for us to offer a free one considering the rebooking rate. Do you find the new treatment is encouraging new customers into your business? Yes certainly, we have lots of people coming to try the machine that have not been in our salon before. Word of mouth is fantastic. When people get results from something, they always tell friends who in turn visit our salon to try it out. These then become customers. They will pick up a pricelist, or get their eyebrows done etc then always try other treatments.
What exactly is Vibration Training? What is vibration training? Vibration training is an effective way to keep your body in shape, it requires minimum effort and produces effective results without you even breaking a sweat. A 10 minute i.Fit work out can have the same effect as 60 minutes resistance training in the gym. Using one of the 3 specifically designed programmes can result in the user burning 300 calories in just 10 minutes.
For more information about offering your clients vibration training with i.Fit, along with an exclusive discount, call ROI 087 1918820 or visit www.ifitworldwide.com
How does it work? All i.Fit machines have two motors. One that powers the oscillation motion and one for the vibration motion. Oscillation, which is the up and down motion, will give the body a resistance work out. As the movement off balances the body, the body will try to correct itself, fighting against the motion. As one limb moves up, the other limb moves down allowing the bodies’ natural shock absorbing system to operate. The forces are dissipated by the pelvic girdle, thorax and lumbar spine. Exercising the muscles causes them to tire,
How many sessions do your clients need before the see results ? One of our members of staff used it four times per week and after three weeks had lost sixteen inches! We always recommend clients measure themselves or even if the salon measures them to show how well it works. Has it been worth the investment? It has well been worth the investment and it builds up our credibility because clients are seeing results. Our last machine never showed results like this so we are delighted to have purchased this machine. Would you recommend this product to other salon owners? In the current economic climate salon owners really need to keep their business fresh with new ideas and treatments for clients. This is a sure way to get new customers and excite existing customers. Weight loss is always something that women are interested in. You will always get customers to try out a new treatment like this but with a machine like iFit that shows results it ensures they return based on the results.
and resting allows them to recover. By doing regular exercise this strengthens the muscles and increases physical performance. Increase your salons revenue Having an i.Fit machine installed can help to create a new and exciting buzz for your business, and thousands of salons in the UK are benefitting from this extra service. It can help you attract new clients and increase your salon revenue. The i.Fit machine will take up no more than 1 square meter of floor space and can be installed into the most compact salons. They are quiet when in use, so don’t cause too much distraction once positioned within your business. You may find that they actually become a talking point for your clients – position the machine near a window and it will act as a great pull for attracting new customers! Most customers will use the i.Fit machine 3 to 4 times per week, and will pay €5 per session, which in turn generates extra profit for you. The cost of the i.Fit machine can be covered in a matter of weeks. Salons can also offer a range of packages and courses at different price ranges to suit their clientele.

Peanuts & Monkeys
Fat Is ...Good?! Our resident Nutritionist Judith Cooper explains why some fats are good and some are not.
Our resident Beauty Stig is really cheesed off this issue, and we get the brunt of the grain of truth as per usual! As the old saying goes my friends – if it sounds too good to be true it probably is! If you recently got the bargain of a lifetime on your favourite perfume or expensive skin care, I apologise! Not to put a dampner on your good fortune, but seriously if you pay peanuts the chances are you are getting monkeys! The annoying fact is there are counterfeits out there and the web is a trap for young players…so take an old grumps advice and be very aware! F.Y.I. – be warned against cheap shampoos in particular - these can be among the most offending – the ingredients may have originally been headed for industrial cleaners. Yep, that’s right -and trust me you do not want industrial cleanser on your scalp! Well, it’s one thing to be bombarded with counterfeits but another to be sold promises that are simply not true. As professionals, I have no doubt that you are equally irritated by the claims of over the counter or
supermarket products – hey I’m defending you here – take it easy! Remember the good old days when results were the one thing a salon could offer a client versus the pharmacy product or the high street? Well, I have good news my friends - although we are seriously competing for each others turf. (Did I mention the infiltration of the beauty zone by the medical profession?) The answer, I hear you ask? – How can we maintain our skin care reputation and satisfy our clients in this vast sea of products they are exposed to? Firstly, the good news is that over 54% of consumers fail to notice a new skin care brand being launched, Yippeee... My friends, the answer is quite simple and quite complicated, all at the same time; ensure you have a great brand that gives great results! (it does not have to be a well known brand - FACT!) Know your brand inside out! Run regular offers and treats of your product - this works great for single operators where commissions are not an issue – for example; buy 3 for 2, or similar. Always – during every visit give a professional prescription that will offer results! Ta da…..
Beauty Side Story “LUMPY PANTS” Another lesson in why DIY bikini waxing is not always a good idea! From an anonymous professional “I am a licensed Beauty Therapist so I wax women’s bikini areas all the time. I do Brazilian, Landing Strip, whatever customers need. I am a pretty private person so I just figured I would do it for myself. I had my own waxer at home so I turned it on and gave it a go. I immediately realised what a bad idea it was. I had no problem when it came to ripping other women’s hair out, but couldn’t do my own. I had wax in places I couldn’t see and nothing I had at home would remove it. I found the oldest underwear I had and drove to the beauty supply store to buy wax remover…all the while having a huge amount of wax in my pants. Needless to say ... never again.”

The Importance of Good Fats We all know we should reduce our intake of the bad saturated fats and hydrogenated fats found in many convenience foods. But what about the beneficial fats that are essential for health? Omega 3 fats are needed for preventing cardiovascular disease, brain function, controlling blood cholesterol levels, improving immune function and reducing inflammation to name some of its uses. The best source of omega 3 fats is found in oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, anchovies and sardines. Flax and hemp seeds are good vegetarian sources. Signs of deficiency can include high triglycerides, high blood pressure, tissue inflammation, dry skin and poor memory. Omega 6 fats are needed for hormone function, keeping blood thin, relaxing blood vessels, lowering blood pressure, skin and hair growth and decreasing
inflammation. Good sources of omega 6 are sesame and sunflower seeds, walnuts and evening primrose oil. Signs of deficiency can include loss of hair, behavioural disturbances, dry scalp and skin, heart and circulatory problems. Fats can be easily destroyed by heat and other processes so follow these guidelines to get the maximum benefits: V Eat some nuts and seeds on a daily basis. The best seeds are flax, hemp, pumpkin, sunflower and sesame. Grind then first and sprinkle on cereal and salads. V Eat oily fish two or three times a week e.g. mackerel, salmon, sardines. V Use cold pressed oils for salads or drizzling over cooked vegetables. V Use extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil for frying as they are most stable at high temperatures. V Do not overheat your pan when cooking. V Use a nut butter or olive oil or a small spreading of butter instead of margarines that contain hydrogenated fats. V Minimise your intake of fried food and saturated fat from red meat and dairy.
