Art Appreciation by Erica Bauwens

Actress and artist Jane Seymour stops by Stone Harbor for a Memorial Day exhibition of her work. Emmy award-winning actress Jane Seymour is known to many as a presence on screen. From her time as Bond Girl Solitaire in Live and Let Die and more recent appearances in movies like Wedding Crashers to her long-time television stint as Dr. Mike Quinn on Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, Seymour is an instantly recognizable talent. But off camera Seymour has also become known for her work with the fine arts, as a painter, photographer, sculptor and more. Seymour has captured audiences across the globe with her art, and is now taking on the Jersey Shore for a special Memorial Day art exhibition. We spoke with Seymour in anticipation of her exhibition, “Jane Seymour: Up Close and Personal,” which opens to audiences at the Ocean Galleries in Stone Harbor from May 15 through May 25. Seymour herself will be on hand to meet guests and talk about her art and signed acquired pieces from May 22 to May 24. SOUTH JERSEY MAGAZINE: What can visitors expect from your Stone Harbor exhibit? JANE SEYMOUR: I do a variety of different styles of painting—everything from pen and ink to watercolors, pastels, mixed media and major oil. My subject matter ranges from mothers and children to floral bouquets and landscapes. One of the signature looks I have is a single flower from head on and I have miniature pen and ink drawings that I’ve become quite known for. They are very spontaneous and are often the inspiration for the fabrics that I’ve made for my women’s clothing line and bedding collection. SJM: What should people look for when viewing your art? JS: Most people are surprised by the range. Most artists stick to one medium or one subject matter. Mine are more like my acting career; more diverse and spontaneous and inspired by the life I’m leading. If I just made a movie in the English countryside I may paint more watercolor villages, but I live by the ocean and the ocean is very spiritual and inspirational to me so that often becomes my inspiration as well. SJM: So I suppose it is fitting that your new show is at the Shore. JS: There are a lot of ideas and thoughts behind my paintings, especially my ocean scenes. The ocean, or a wave, is constantly in motion, like life. So for a lot of people when that motion doesn’t go in your direction—be it emotionally, romantically—they tend to back away. The wave lets go of water it no longer needs, and as it comes and it crashes it doesn’t stay down; it continues to move forward. If your heart and mind are open you can collaborate with new water or water that’s been through its own cycle. SJM: The exhibition is called Up Close and Personal; do you find the relationship with your fans to be more personal or intimate through the fine arts? JS: A lot of people know that I paint to some degree. This is what I do for me, and I started painting having gone through a very tough time in my life. I still feel like art is the way I can most clearly express myself. When acting I’m dealing with someone else’s writing or directing, and when I’m painting it’s a very clear expression of who I am and what I am feeling at that time. I love when people see the work and connect to it in a personal way, and that’s what’s so fun about being at a gallery like Stone Harbor. SJM: What inspires you in everyday life? JS: Wherever I go my camera is with me. I start to notice details—be it in wrought iron or flowers. I take photographs of what is growing around me; and of course right now all the flowers are out. I love tulips so I might come up with some new tulip paintings soon.

SJM: I noticed that you have dabbled with sculpture work. Is 3-D something you might like to try next? JS: Oh absolutely. I have a number of more classical sculptures that I don’t show that are more personal and private to me and my children. I love sculpting, and I look forward to doing more of that in the future. SJM: Do you have any future goals for your art? JS: I’m trying to get a little bit more abstract at the moment, and allowing myself to be a lot freer. I’m trying a lot of different techniques. But color is a very big part of what I do, and that shows through in all my work. SJM: What else do you have in the works right now? JS: I’m on the television show Jane the Virgin right now, and I have a film called Bereave that’s in film festivals right now. CNN is also going to be showing a documentary about Glen Campbell, called I’ll Be Me that I am an executive producer of. I have another movie called High Strung that will air in Cannes right before I come to Stone Harbor, and I’m going to be launching several handbags that will be available to the public. I’ve been very busy lately, so it will be nice to have a little vacation in Stone Harbor. Published (and copyrighted) in South Jersey Magazine, Volume 12, Issue 2 (May, 2015). As the product of a '90s upbringing - during the era of "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" - I was especially tickled to interview the lovely Jane Seymour recently. She'll be in the area next week to debut her newest collection of oil paintings and watercolors. *$//(5< Actress/artist /gracious person Jane Seymour has a show‌

Aside from the Jersey Shore, Seymour told me she comes to our fair city a lot and called it "an amazing place," where she has hosted a number of art shows in conjunction with the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. A squiggle inside a mural on South Street depicts her "Open Hearts" symbol, the trademark of her Open Hearts jewelry line. She said she had "minutes in which to do it." "I come to Philadelphia a lot. I have a number of art shows there, friends there - I love Philadelphia," she told me. This year's Open Hearts Foundation Gala will be held on Saturday at Seymour's home in Malibu, Calif. It celebrates three individuals who have overcome adversity in one form or another. Paul Stanley, frontman of the rock band Kiss, is one of them. He'll be acknowledged for his work with the California-based organization Mending Kids, which provides life-changing - and free surgical care to children worldwide. Stanley was born with microtia, a congenital ear deformity that left him unable to hear out of his right ear. DJ's gone to the dogs

This year's canine carnival broke last year's attendance record, with more than 8,000 four-legged friends and their owners. The dog walk offered pets and pet owners the ultimate doggie date as they took part in interactive games, like vying for a prize for the longest kiss between owner and dog and taking their pooch's photo inside the "Dogs Playing Poker" painting. Porn star Teagan Presley was trotting around town last week, enjoying carriage rides through Old City and paying a visit to the Betsy Ross House, a source friend told me. The award-winning adult-film actress also devoured a cheesesteak from Geno's (1219 S. 9th St.) and donated several fun items for next month's Philly police vs. firefighters hockey game and charity raffle. The hockey game is May 17 at the Flyers Skate Zone in the Northeast (10990 Decatur Road), where teams from the fire and police departments will face off. All proceeds benefit the families of fallen police officer Robert Wilson III and fallen firefighter Joyce Craig. Presley generously donated two of her DVDs and a Fleshlight - a sex toy for men. Contact a team player for a chance to win all three. On Twitter: @RuffTuffDH You May Like

Among the works are acrylic paintings in Seymour’s “Open Hearts” series, which was inspired by her mother’s idea of “opening your heart.” Selected as a 2007 contestant for TV’s “Dancing with the Stars,” Seymour designed a pendant in the image of a painting and wore it during a performance on the show. “My mother was dying of a stroke, and it was her favorite show,” said Seymour. “I had one necklace made, and Kay Jewelers saw it.” The jewelry company expressed interest in bringing the pendant to the public, and the idea morphed into a line that now includes earrings and other pieces. “I published four books about “Open Hearts.” I had no intention of doing jewelry,” Seymour said. The jewelry collection has been well-received by the public. According to the artist, the pieces typically start conversations about life changes. “Usually, people start telling their stories,” she said. “We’re encouraging people not to be afraid of change and challenges in their lives.” Through her personal experiences and friendships with accomplished artists, Seymour has taken a hands-on approach to studying art forms. She has painted with some of the world’s great artists, she said, and taken inspiration from famous works, such as Claude Monet’s “Water Lilies” painting. “I’m a great lover of the impressionists. I like to visit what Monet did,” she said. “But, I tend not to do one image and do it 25 times.” Miller, who also operates an Ocean Galleries site in neighboring Avalon, said she and local art collectors are happy to have Seymour back in Stone Harbor, following previous gallery exhibits in 2007, 2008 and 2009. “She’s very prolific, and she’s a busy lady,” said Miller. Seymour is famous for her television roles as the title character in “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” and in “Jane, the Virgin,” as well as her work in films such as “Live and Let Die,” “Somewhere in Time” and “Wedding Crashers.” She recently completed work on the film “Bereave” and has executive-produced the documentary “Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me,” which is expected to air on CNN. Seymour said the film tells the story of country singer Campbell, who embarks on a farewell tour after receiving an Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis. Seymour said it provides great insight into living with the degenerative condition. “It’s also a really great love story between his family and his wife,” she said. Meanwhile, Ocean Galleries will follow up Seymour’s collection with exhibits by John Lennon, Peter Max, Victoria Montesinos and Alexandre Renoir (great-grandson of world-famous impressionist PierreAuguste Renoir) throughout the summer season.

Seymour began painting more than 20 years ago as part of a healing process for personal challenges experienced at that time. Since then, Ms. Seymour has emerged as an established and accomplished painter, creating an intimate world of delicate watercolors, colorful vibrant oil paintings, pastels, and bronze sculptures. Often described as a California colorist, Ms. Seymour believes that her art reflects the essence of who she is. Her collection of expressive art often reflects her passions in life, such as flower gardening, which is evident in her colorful flower arrangements, detailed landscapes, and lush garden paintings and watercolors. Her Ocean Galleries exhibition includes an elaborate series of paintings and watercolors depicting Monet’s famed Giverny gardens and numerous beachscapes and figurative paintings, many of which were inspired by her home life in Malibu, California and recent visits to the East Coast.
