BETWEEN CITY AND PORT // A watercomplex A scuba diving institute in the port of Genoa
Genoa is positioned on a very narrow piece of land, squeezed in between the mountains and the sea. This provides a topography in which the port and the city are forced to live very close to each other. Whereas in other port cities the port recedes itself from the city center, this is not possible in Genoa due the the mountainous hinterland. Thus the large-scale port is directly adjacent to the medieval city. On the dividing line between port and city is an elevated road located, the Sopraelevata, a transborder that has
somehow also become a boundary, but an unclear boundary that is sometimes easy, but sometimes impossible to cross. The area of the Sopraelevata, the interweaving of the two worlds is what creates the interscalarity: The intermediary between two scales. Reprogramming this line in order to enhance new public functions might be a solution to make the bridge between the different scales. The public building as an interscalar program in-between industrial and residential buildings.

different time intervals and used by a diverse group of audience.
By analysing Roman baths I found out that the atmosphere of the water not only provides space for the baths, but also forms space for sports and knowledge, construing a shared cultural framework for the civic sphere. By translating this program to the contemporary urban condition, I synthesised a building program that reflects the diverse needs of the city: A diving institute with pools and a library as the most important parts of the building. Also public functions will be implemented like a bar/ shop, a restaurant and an open air theater. These programmatic elements will be activated by
The final result is a public building that connects to the city by its form and materials, but it is also a transition/ connection/passage from the port to the city and vice versa. The project focusses on positioning in the city, the composition in relation to the surroundings and the theme/program of water to actualise the regeneration of the public realm, not only as an infrastructural entity but also as a culturally signified element in my design, which has been essential in Genoa’s history.

EMBRACING DARKNESS // Santos pakhuis Design for an hotel in an old coffee warehouse
The first time visiting the old coffee warehouse Santos I was fascinated by the darkness of the building and how the little light coming in was accentuated by its scarcity. Instead of trying to fight the darkness, the darkness is embraced in the public space as an unique atmosphere and also as a reference to the dark color of coffee and its heavy smell. The thick brick walls are kept closed at the lower levels and artificial light is used to accentuate the original architectural elements
with an industrial and rough beauty. The hotel rooms however are contrasted to the public space with a very light interior. A new volume is added to the upper part of the building, slightly set back from the original facade. The contrast between the new and the old is the same as the contrast between the light and the dark. Opening the upper part of the facade also brings in some light from the top towards the bottom of the building.

THE PRINTWORKSHOP // Rotterdam Accentuating the inky mess
The colorful ink dripped everywhere, the robust machines and the bright prints are the elements that really define the atmosphere of a print workshop. A very clean and minimalistic architecture helps to show the beauty of an inky mess to its visitors. The building is positioned inside a building block, so only a small part of the building is visible from the street. This gives the freedom to design a very open building without losing the privacy of the people making use of
the workshop. The open facade also brings in the overhanging green of the neighbors to the building, giving a very comforting, quiet atmosphere. To articulate the light, the roof is made of an open construction. However, the oblique surfaces make sure no direct sunlight can ruin the prints of the workshop. The whole building is one big space, divided by tho small wooden volumes containing the more private programs of the building.

MUSEUM KUNSTHAL // Rotterdam A new design for the Kunsthal by Rem Koolhaas
Inspired by the original Kunsthal by Rem Koolhaas we were asked to design a new museum. A scenic routing and the Kunsthal as a monolithic element in the Museum park were the starting points for my design. The path of the exposition spaces is crossing the main public route of the museum several times, with different view points. As a visitor, once in the museum, you are free to choose your own
route, skipping rooms or changing the sequence of your own path. The volume is designed as a massive rock, cloven by the public route, connecting the Museum park with the important road at the other side of the building. The two concrete blocks are covered by a curtain of corten steel. As a visitor you have to go through this curtain to enter the building.

THE AIRING // A foldable hotel room Design for a world of globalisation
Globalization will increase in the future. More and more events will be organized over the world, temporary visited by a lot of people. New buildings and hotels have to be build to give all these temporary inhabitants a place to sleep. When the events are finished, people go back to their own place, leaving an overload of new buildings unused. To solve this problem, the Airing is a design for a foldable temporary
apartment which can be attached to already existing buildings. When events are finished, the Airings are folded back and loaded in the truck to move to the next city. The Airing is not only a temporary apartment, but also an amazing opportunity to experience the city in an extraordinary way. It is fun for the visitors and at the same time, once used, lights the city as little lanterns in the streets.

DOUBLE U TABLE // Two directions, multiple options Design for a small, multifunctional table
The Double U table, is a small and flexible table that can be used in many different ways. The base is a very simple aluminium frame which can be positioned horizontal or vertical. In this frame different elements can be placed to create a table
that suits you and your interior. The specific form of the frame makes the table suitable as a laptop table at your couch or just an ordinary coffee table with different storage options.
