invitation International symposium minors and citizenship May 27 2016 10 am - 1 pm

Flemish Parliament Hall ‘De Schelp’

Program On May 27 2016 the Flemish Office of the Children’s Rights Commissioner organizes an international symposium on minors and citizenship. John Wall, Professor Philosophy and Religion Childhood Studies at the Rutgers University Camden (US) gives a lecture entitled ‘Empowering Children, Empowering Citizens: Human Rights in an Interdependent World’.. The nature of citizenship has changed over time and needs to be rethought again in the twenty-first century, where citizens are not so much autonomous individuals in small communities as interdependent members of diverse global networks. Children are the key to understanding this new kind of post-modern citizenship. They are the third of humanity who most obviously exhibit global interdependency, while also having been most profoundly denied citizenship rights to date. Using the perspective of childism, this presentation critically examines traditional ideas of citizenship rights, reimagines human rights as means for interdependent empowerment, and provides practical examples of child-inclusive citizenship rights to labor and voting. The working language of the symposium is English. 09:00
