Behind The Lens of Fashion Photographer Ali Lomas How would you describe your style of photography? My fashion imagery and portraits have a distinctive style; a whimsical, magical feel often with darker undertones, my works have been described as blurring the boundaries of fashion and fine art photography. There is a dreamy, hazy feel to a lot of my images, a softness often contrasted by a meaning in the image. What are your best bits about being a photographer? And the not so glamorous?! Glamorous would be the prep, making everything pretty and watching the models being transformed into beautiful creatures, and all the truly beautiful designs and bits and bobs I get to handle. The not so glamorous would be the sometimes compromising situations you have to get in to get the picture you want, like standing in freezing makeshift studios in the coldest winters and attempting to row down a stream with broken oars and a boat that isn’t sure whether its wanting to capsize with a shivering model in lingerie, but it's usually all worth it in the end. What have been your highlights so far? Getting a first class degree in 2009 was a huge achievement, but was topped by probably my biggest highlight of my career so far… in November 2009 I was awarded the Godfrey Argent Award and ELLE Commission from the National Portrait Gallery Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize, making me the youngest person to have exhibited at the gallery and it was such an unexpected and amazing experience and achievement. Shooting for ELLE in 2010 was equally amazing, working for such a prestigious and successful glossy was an absolute dream.

How do you find inspiration for your shoots? I take inspiration from so many things, experiences in my life, feelings, thoughts, music, fashion, even just seeing a place can light up my imagination and I can visualize all these ideas for shoots. My models are also very inspiring, I may direct and choreograph the models during shoots but often their ‘look’ can bring about new ideas, or the way they move in front of the camera, I love awkwardness and self-consciousness it speaks in pictures. If you could work on any companies campaign who would you choose? There is something beautiful about contour design, and I love photographing lingerie. There is a certain beauty with lingerie models, a perfection that makes the designs appear even more beautiful. It would be a dream to work for brands such as Agent Provocateur, La Perla, Bordelle, Andres Sarda, Wolford or Tallulah Loves Lingerie. I love currently working with some hugely talented graduate contour designers creating lookbooks, it's so exciting and encouraging as everything is so free and creative; anything goes. My favourite, hopefully upcoming designer, has to be Phoebe Blockley whose lingerie collection I’ve just shot. It would be such an achievement to be regularly working for high fashion magazines, and campaigns of any kind though. Any quick tips photographers? Never give up…

Ali Lomas Photoshoot with Contour Designers Phoebe Blockley & Ros Strach

Hot off the press this Spring Summer 2011 saw Ali Lomas capture the delicate beauty of Contour Designers Phoebe Blockley and Ros Strach. Kindred Sole Edition loves the vintage inspired pieces and the understated femininity of the designs. The old school glamour of both collections with their close attention to detail result in timeless pieces that every woman will covet.

Stylist to the stars Tamar Kendall answers your fashion questions... Qu: My friends getting married in July and I need a dress that I can wear to both the wedding and to the evening reception. I am a size 10 and 28 yrs old. Every outfit I have tried on so far seems to be too dressed up for the daytime wedding. Can you suggest a dress that is appropriate for both day and evening? Claire, Uttoxeter A: In your case Claire, I think it's all about the accessories! You can't go far wrong with an elegant shift dress, such as this little beauty from Topshop, £46. Loosely pin up your hair and pop a fascinator in for the ceremony. For the night time let your hair fall loose and pop on a couple of bling accessories, along with a stronger lip colour – you'll instantly look sexier and dance floor ready! Qu: I have seen a lot of women wearing stripe maxi dresses that look really nice. I would love to get one but I am not too sure if they would suit me or not. I wear a size 14 and am an average height but I just worry with stripes going across they will make me look bigger. Is there an outfit you could suggest or a golden rule I could follow? Vicki, Solihull A: Vicki I'm afraid that your gorgeous proportions do not lend themselves to horizontal stripes. As a rule vertical stripes are always safer for us ladies without curves. But don't think this means that you should avoid pattern altogether and go for a 'safe' plain option. You will look amazing in this seasons selection of bold prints such as this leopard print maxi dress from ASOS, £35. However, if you have your heart set on rocking the stripe look you can still achieve it by opting for a simple white or navy maxi, teamed with a cropped nautical cardigan. Doing this will also help to divide up your proportions and make you look taller. Qu: I have seen so many wedges in magazines but there seems to be too many different styles to choice from. I would like a pair that I could wear quite a lot rather than just a couple of occasions. What would you suggest? Louise, Cornwall A: If you want something that you are going to get lots of use from it is always best to go for a timeless style that won't look dated and go off trend too quickly. In your case a simple pair of espadrilles would be perfect. Espadrilles are ideal as they can be worn with dresses, shorts, jeans, trousers...pretty much anything you can think of! Also they usually come in a sensible height so they are super comfortable to wear. Kindred Sole have a lovely pair of espadrille wedges. At only £29.99 make them your style steal!

Qu: I bought a pair of red chinos about two months ago that fold up at the ankle. I love them but I never know what to wear them with. I dress quite smart casual and do like to look trendy. Sam, Birmingham A: This simple classic look really requires a nice crisp white shirt or white vest top tucked into the trousers, finished with a thin belt. During the day I would definitely suggest teaming the chinos with a smart pair of brogues. Kindred Sole have a nice selection, including these Bronx Herald White Brogues, for only ÂŁ43 By going with a white brogue, you are keeping the look fresh and season appropriate. Turned up chinos look great glammed up with a pair of heels too, so check out the great selection at kindredsole.com.

Qu: I have just had a big career change going from teaching to working for a big organisation. I now work in an office where suits seem to be too smart but jeans seem to be too casual. I really need some inspiration. Your stylists help would be really appreciated! Alex, York A: Alex, you must broaden your style horizon! There are so many looks in between the extremes of jeans and suits. Chinos look smart (see Sam's style solution above!) and are massively on trend, such as these grey Topshop chinos, ÂŁ38. Providing you are careful to choose a sensible length, you could also wear a shirt dress.

Girl Got Beats…….. She is tour DJ for Kelis and has been described as '‘Easily The Best Female DJ In the UK’ by Time Out - We catch up with DJ Nikki Beatnik for a chat about all things music and fashion…… KSE: How would you describe your sound? Nikki: My sound is electronic with a love of bass- heavy music, so my dj sets are influenced and include everything from house to dubstep, hiphop, 80's, 90's & moobahton. I love very new sounds mixed with old school records. What projects are you working on at the moment? I'm making records with my Brother & co- producer Statis, writing & producing our own records for Beatnik Productions as well as working on singles & tracks with lots of other artists. I'm also tour DJing for Kelis which is an on- going friendship and tour thing. We have know each other forever, so it is great fun touring together & Kelis's set's are DJ led as opposed to band led, which is very fresh, the stuff we have coming up is brilliant. Apart from that I'm constantly Blogging about DJing, fashion & music & I also run a party in East London called Fashbashsoundclash where Beatnik play live sets & have guest artists. Its the most fun party in London, what going out used to be about! Check my daily Blog out, Id be so happy with new followers! www.djnikkibeatnik.blogspot.com Are there any new DJ's or artists we should be looking out for? Watch out for all of the Beatnik crew of artists, they have some amazing tunes coming out, produced by us www.beatniktv.com also my friend Tyson who used to front the band Unklejam is back with his solo album, the first single Out Of My Mind is brilliant, 80's influenced dance, but he has the voice of Donny Hathaway & Prince mixed with UK swag.

Nikki doing her thing on set

You have worked with so many brands and artists - who has been your favourite? My favourite artist is obviously Kelis as she is a great friend and the most talented of all of them in my view as she writes, produces, sings live, styles herself and is truly talented. Apart from that Tomoko Takahashi the acclaimed artist/ painter was a blast as she is also highly intelligent & very free. When I did her launch party for her huge exhibition, it was in the De La Warr Pavilion by the sea and she stripped off during the exhibition and jumped in the sea! Then the whole thing turned into a massive rave by the beach. I love people like that, so eccentrically brilliant. I also studied Fine Art, so art & design and fashion are close to my heart. I have also DJ'd for a ton of other people and artists, Jay- Z, Beyonce, Mariah, Kelly Rowland, Adidas, Elle...there are so many I find it hard to remember what I have done in the past 10 years. Russel Simmons was very nice to me, genuine and very interesting and I loved doing the Reebok campaign as I had been a genuine fan of Freestyles, which I represented.

If you could collaborate with any other artist who would you choose? I would love to work with Omar, he is from the UK and so talented, but the most underrated artist on the planet. I also wanted to work with Smilie Culture, so I was so sad to hear of him passing away. There is a long list actually, Slick Rick is also on there :) I like interesting characters and true artists. I cant wait to work with more and more people and make more records. I'm so lucky to be working with my brother the other half of Beatnik as he is a creative genius and and uber- geek and I am in love with my job of DJing and love playing live and so together we make a good team writing and producing.

When can we expect to see your next single/album released? We have a plan this year to be releasing singles constantly and pretty much for the foreseeable future ! You can check out our sounds on the Beatnik Website and also sign up for free mixes and tunes on my Blog. Also you can follow me on Twitter & hear about everything! @djnikkibeatnik What has been the highlight of your music career so far? I've got to travel the World and been to every continent, stayed in some amazing places & DJ'd at some amazing events & clubs, that is priceless. The highlight would be the true friends I have met all over the World who are all talented and interesting, I'm very lucky. Who has been your musical inspiration? I have over 10,000 records, so I cant pin it down to one artist or sound. I love new music and new sounds so my inspiration changes daily, but my parents surrounding me with music as a child and being so musical themselves influenced me greatly. They also pushed me to learn instruments and go to music school, so its def thanks to them for everything- they are my only true influences and my endless support- my family. You were described as 'Easily The Best Female DJ in The UK' by Time Out. What advice would you give to new DJ's starting out?

Don't do it! lol the DJ is a constantly changing phenomenon and I'm not sure which direction it is going in now with everything becoming more computer based and everyone wanting to be a DJ, there is a saturation of the market & a watering down of talent somewhat. However if you really have a talent and a passion the one thing you can do is practise. Know music inside out and if you have any classical training or theory of how music is composed, all the better. DJ'ing is also not a full time career for most, there is a constant struggle and you will have hard times as well as highlights, like with any creative job. Its also very male dominated and not easy to hold down a relationship or have a normal life. If all of that appeals! Go for it. You have worked with Fashion brands including being the face of Reebok Freestyles and Fashion events including Fashion Rocks. How would you describe your style? My style is easy, not too try- hard. I love shoes, bags & jewels. I never like to look too 'done' I prefer my old vintage T- shirts to anything else I own. I also love hats. I have way too much of everything, so now I'm trying to buy classic pieces that last. I have become a devotee of Burberry & I'm obsessed with Ferragamo shoes. I mix High Street brands, Asos, River Island & Topshop are my favourites as their on- line service is good, with higher end pieces. Other than that I'm happy scouring vintage shops & markets on my travels. The cheapest old worn out T- Shirt & a Coca- Cola make me happier than anything :) Ladies and Gentleman that is the uber talented fab-u-lous Nikki Beatnik – If your not familiar with her music then get yourself over to her website!! Nikki Beatnik is fast changing the face for female DJs – If you heart your tunes then your going to love Nikki Beatnik! Don’t forget to follow Nikki on Twitter to keep up with her music adventures!
