High in the Sonoran Desert of southern Arizona, 590-acre Rancho De La Osa is surrounded by 120,000 acres of Buenos Aires Wildlife Refuge. Historically rich, Rancho De La Osa’s headquarters was originally a village for Tohono O’Odham Indians, possibly dating all the way back to the Hohokams. The ranch is also home to the oldest continually used building in Arizona built by Jesuit missionaries in 1720 to be used as a place of worship, a trading post and an inn for travelers. In 1916 Pancho Villa attempted to take the ranch, leaving a cannonball lodged in an adobe wall. Following the Gadsden Purchase of 1853, the ranch became part of the United States and was purchased in the late 1800’s by cattle baron Colonel William Sturgis, who built the great hacienda. In 1925 Louisa Wetherill, a noted archaeologist purchased the ranch and opened it to guests the following year. By the 1930’s Rancho De La Osa became a political hotbed, hosting President Lyndon Johnson and his wife Lady Bird, Vice President Hubert Humphrey, Senator Adlai Stevenson and many others. William Clayton famously wrote the Marshall Plan in what is now known as the Clayton House. Hollywood celebrities who visited the ranch included, Joan Crawford, Tom Mix and John Wayne, just to name a few. Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone with the Wind, spent time at the ranch and Zane Gray regularly wrote there. Today Rancho De La Osa offers a remarkable guest ranch experience, with fabulous food much of it locally sourced and a great wine list. There are endless activities to keep you busy from sunup to sundown, although many guests are drawn to the ranch for its tranquility and remarkable scenery.

Between A.D. 900 and 1150, Chaco Canyon was a major center of culture for the Ancient Pueblo Peoples. Chacoans quarried sandstone blocks and hauled timber from great distances, assembling fifteen major complexes that remained the largest buildings in North America until the 19th century. Many Chacoan buildings may have been aligned to capture the solar and lunar cycles, requiring generations of astronomical observations and centuries of skillfully coordinated construction. Climate change is thought to have led to the emigration of Chacoans and the eventual abandonment of the canyon, beginning with a fifty-year drought commencing in 1130. Chaco Canyon is a World Heritage Site and considered sacred ancestral homelands by the Hopi and Pueblo people, who maintain oral accounts of their historical migration from Chaco and their spiritual relationship to the land. Additionally, it is one of the designated New Mexico Scenic Byways. We’ll enjoy a picnic lunch, included, while exploring Chaco Canyon. Would you like to know more? We recommend The Mystery of Chaco Canyon, available free on Prime Video. Narrated by Robert Redford, this documentary examines the ancient ruins of Chaco Canyon, describing and demonstrating the intricate and precise astronomical alignments among the many buildings spread over a wide desert area. These alignments, along with other evidence, support the theory that Chaco Canyon was a major ceremonial center. Is this America’s Stonehenge?

Travel more than 150 years back in time on the Florence Historic Home & Building Tour an exciting opportunity to explore one of Arizona’s oldest towns. Established in 1866, Florence’s early economy was based in agriculture, but a mere nine years later silver was discovered at the Silver King Mine and Florence became the government seat of the newly formed Pinal County. Over the ensuing years Florence played an important role as a regional administrative center for all federal land transactions for Southern Arizona. The Arizona State Prison moved to Florence in 1908, replacing the Territorial Prison in Yuma. Inmates were shipped from Yuma by train to build the prison and lived in the surrounding desert during its construction. Throughout its history Florence’s architecture evolved from rustic Sonoran adobe brick buildings to the Modern Movement and all the architectural styles that existed in Territorial Arizona can be found along the streets of Florence today. We’ll stroll charming downtown Florence and enjoy the hop on, hop off trolley ride to outlying historical structures offered on the tour. Lunch is on self, with several great little restaurants to choose from. This fun annual trek should not be missed!

It wasn't until February 1978 that Tenen and Tufts told the property owners, James and Lois Kartchner, about their amazing discovery. During the four years of secret exploration, the discoverers realized that the cave's extraordinary variety of colors and formations must be preserved. The cave's existence became public knowledge in 1988 when its purchase was approved as an Arizona State Park. Extraordinary precautions have been taken during its development to conserve the cave's near-pristine condition. Today we have an opportunity to experience this stunning limestone cave in Southeastern Arizona that boasts world-class features. This “live” cave, is host to a wide variety of unique minerals and formations. Water percolates from the
surface and calcite formations continue to grow, including stalactites dripping down like icicles and giant stalagmites reaching up from the ground. Tour guides will unveil this fascinating underground landscape during a memorable 1-hour tour. There are two perspectives in every love story. The Last Five Years will captivate you with its emotional examination of relationships and ingenious, interchanging structure between present and past. Intimate and bittersweet, Jason Robert Brown's powerful, award-winning musical chronicles the triumphs, heartbreak, and intricacies of two artists in New York City. Cathy, a struggling actress, and Jamie, a literary prodigy, are in love but chasing their dreams to extents they may or may not admit to each other. Fall in and out of love with this hit musical deconstruction and compelling introspection that alternates through time. The musical's unconventional structure unfolds as Cathy tells her story in reverse, from the end of their relationship, and Jamie tells his chronologically, from the beginning. The two come together once – perhaps for the first time – at their wedding in the middle of the show. We’ll begin the evening with an early dinner on self, at Portillo’s, located at Tempe Marketplace. This wildly popular eatery is a Chicagoland favorite since 1963, when Dick Portillo invested $1,100 into a small trailer to open the first Portillo’s hot dog stand in Villa Park, Illinois. Today the Portillo’s menu includes their famous Chicago-style hot dogs, Italian beef sandwiches, chopped salad, cheese fries, and homemade chocolate cake. The Italian beef is slow-roasted for four hours, thinly sliced, and served on freshly baked French bread. Then, it's dipped in hot gravy made with their homemade blend of seasonings that they’ve been perfecting for 50 years. Ask for the Chicago-style hot dog “dragged through the garden” and you’ll understand what all the hype is about!

The Sonoran desert has a wider variety of plants than any other desert on planet earth. A stellar wildflower season depends on a mysterious mix of just the right amount of rainfall, beginning in autumn and running through the winter months. A spectacular wildflower season in the American Southwest is something that you will never forget a brilliant carpeting of the desert floor and mountainsides. Desert wildflowers are a quick show, and must be enjoyed within a short window of time. And with wildflowers there are no guarantees some seasons offering more dramatic displays than others. But even during the “worst” years, you ’ll always find some wildflowers when you know where to look. This tour is very popular and we don’t announce our destination, because wildflowers can be very elusive and we’ll be tracking their arrival. A Brown Bag Lunch is included chockfull of goodies. Don’t miss out on this fun and affordable
springtime trek. Call in your reservations and join us! Depart: Mesa 9 a.m. Phx 9:30 a.m. NW 10 a.m. R: 3 p.m.

Visitors to the Longhorn Grill, one of southern Arizona’s most iconic landmarks, still walk through the main entrance famously sculpted to look like a gigantic cow’s skull leaning against a boulder. Step inside to discover an all-new interior and a fabulous menu that runs from chargrilled burgers to slow smoked brisket sandwiches, big fresh salads topped with pollo asado chicken or grilled salmon, and imaginative rice bowls. Lunch is on self. Later we’ll head to beautiful Madera Canyon, located on the northwestern face of the Santa Rita Mountains in the Coronado National Forest. Madera Canyon and Madera Creek traverse four life zones, and many habitats between the desert floor and the mountaintops, making it one of Arizona’s most famous “Sky Islands.” With fifteen species of hummingbirds, and over 256 species of birds documented, it is a "required" site for all serious birders. You will not spend time in Madera Canyon without seeing plenty of wildlife. White-tailed and mule deer, rabbits, wild turkeys, and squirrels are regularly observed. Other animals like black bear, coati, foxes, ring-tailed cats, raccoons, bobcats, and mountain lion are more reclusive and only occasionally seen, and sixteen species of bats have been recorded in the Canyon. Madera Canyon is a perfect springtime destination! Depart: Phx 8 a.m. Scts 8:15 a.m. Mesa 9 a.m. R: 6 p.m.

Experience the drama of Arizona’s best kept secret! Taller than Niagara Falls, the Grand Falls are thunderous midMarch to early April the springtime runoff from the White Mountains. Often called the “Chocolate Falls” due to the muddiness of the Colorado River, the Grand Falls are dry throughout most of the year.
