The Sandhill Cranes of Whitewater Draw featuring the Historic Gadsden Hotel

December 7th-8th, 2023 & January 30th-31st, 2024 $426 (Based Upon Double Occupancy) $65 (Single Supplement) Day One: We’re traveling south to Tombstone—The Town Too Tough To Die—where we’ll find plenty of great little restaurants to choose from and enjoy lunch on self. Later, back in the Transits, we’ll head for Douglas, Arizona. Just a few miles north of the Mexican border, Douglas, a once remote ranching town is home to the infamous Gadsden Hotel. Built in 1902, then destroyed by fire, the Gadsden was rebuilt in 1929 in the Art Nouveau style—offering a magnificent Tiffany stained glass window overlooking the lobby, and a sweeping Italian marble staircase—up which Pancho Villa reportedly rode his horse. The hotel provided gracious hospitality to the growing business brought in by the mining industry and the settling of the Arizona Territory. The lobby of the Gadsden, “the living room,” hosted cattlemen, ranchers, copper mining executives and businessmen. For all of the Gadsden’s rich history, the hotel also had a dark side—catering to gamblers, and notable lawless characters of the American West. Famously haunted, guests and staff members have reported paranormal encounters on every floor, with the third floor seemingly the epicenter. The basement of the Gadsden is beyond fascinating—a 7,000 square foot labyrinth of twenty rooms—which secretly housed bootleg whiskey tunnels, brothels and a notorious speakeasy. We’ll check into our beautifully renovated rooms, and after a refresh we’ll enjoy a Welcome Dinner, served buffet-style with a glass of beer or wine, and it’s all included. After dinner, we’ll explore the Gadsden, beginning on the third floor, winding our way down into the basement—with guides recounting the darker history that arose from the underbelly of the hotel. Afterwards you might want to call it an early night—we’ve got a big day tomorrow! Day Two: We’ll be up before the crack of dawn to enjoy a continental breakfast, included, at the hotel. Back in the Transits, we’ll hit the road for Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area, one of the best places to view sandhill cranes, with an estimated winter population of over 30,000. Located in the Sulphur Springs Valley—a Chihuahuan desert grassland habitat—Whitewater Draw is surrounded by Arizona’s magnificent sky islands. The sandhill cranes spend the night standing in the draw’s shallow waters to evade predators, and then fly out at sunrise, to feed and socialize in the surrounding area. With an impressive wingspan of 6 to 7 feet, the early morning mass ascension of the sandhill cranes is a sight to behold! There is no visitor’s center at the Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area, but there are restrooms. In addition to sandhill cranes, the waters of the draw attract many kinds of ducks, geese, herons, egrets, shorebirds, gulls and terns, as well as various mammals. Don’t forget your camera! Formerly a cattle ranch, Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area was purchased in 1997 and is now managed to enhance wetland habitats and provide waterfowl habitat, and wildlife viewing. After this heart-stopping experience, we’ll travel to Bisbee, located 90 miles southeast of Tucson in the scenic Mule Mountains. Founded in 1880, Bisbee was one of the most cultured cities in the American West—the largest city between St. Louis and San Francisco. Downtown Bisbee still retains much of its cosmopolitan charm, with its mining camp roots also fully on display in the rollicking Brewery Gulch district—once home to 50 saloons and several brothels. We’ll visit the Queen Mine, don hard hats, miner’s headlamps and the always stylish yellow slicker, then head underground and back in time! Retired Phelps Dodge employees will narrate our journey 1,500 feet into the mine, recounting the dangers and dramas of mining days. Afterwards we’ll stroll the streets of Bisbee, now home to many interesting shops and galleries, and we’ll enjoy lunch on self with several fantastic restaurants to choose from. Midafternoon we’ll head for home—a relaxing journey through the rolling grasslands of Southern Arizona, with plenty of great stops along the way. This Kindred Tours Classic should not be missed!

The 13th Annual Havasu Balloon Festival

January 19th-21st, 2024 Friday-Sunday $779 (Based Upon Double Room Occupancy) $266 (Single Supplement) Day One: We’ll leave the Valley with a stop for lunch on self, as well as plenty of great sightseeing, on our way to beautiful Lake Havasu City! Upon arrival, we’ll check into the brand new contemporary styled Holiday Inn Express, conveniently located in English Village, next to the London Bridge. Guests of the hotel are just steps away from restaurants, shops and entertainment venues. After a refresh, we’ll head out for a fabulous Welcome Dinner at Angelina’s Italian Kitchen, where we’ll enjoy a three-course meal, with several entrée items to select from, a glass of red or white wine, and dessert, included. After dinner we’ll head out to the balloon field to explore the Glow Spectacular, a truly remarkable event, as pilots ignite the burners of their tethered balloons simultaneously and they glow like enormous holiday ornaments. Later we’ll enjoy a free evening in Lake Havasu City, on a festival weekend, where there will be much to see and do. Day Two: Breakfast is included at the hotel, then we’re off to experience the heart-stopping Mass Ascension—an early morning launch of hundreds of balloons—the most amazing display of sound and color! Afterwards we’ll explore all that this thrilling festival has to offer, including tethered balloon rides, food vendor’s booths, live music and so much more. Early afternoon we’ll head off to exciting Laughlin, Nevada—home to eight different resorts, side by side along the beautiful Colorado River, miles of fun-filled recreational and gaming opportunities, and a huge variety of dining choices—making it the perfect destination for lunch on self and a great afternoon. Later we’ll head back to Lake Havasu City where we’ll enjoy a free evening and dinner on self with several wonderful restaurants to choose from. Day Three: Breakfast is included at the hotel, then it’s bags out and we’re off to explore Oatman, one of Arizona’s most interesting ghost towns. This crazy little town began as a mining tent camp over 100 years ago, but quickly became a flourishing gold mining center in 1915, when two miners struck a ten-million-dollar gold find. Mining in Oatman was short lived. The town survived by catering to travelers on old U.S. Route 66 and nearly died when the route became what is now Interstate 40. Today tame burros roam the streets of lively Oatman, descendants of the early mining burros. We’ll check out the Oatman Hotel, where Clark Gable and Carol Lombard honeymooned in 1939, stroll the historic streets and handfeed the burros. Afterwards we’ll head back to the Valley with a stop for lunch on self, and plenty of great sightseeing along the way. Don’t wait to make your reservations for the 13th Annual Havasu Balloon Festival, designated as one of THE TOP 100 EVENTS IN NORTH AMERICA! Call Your Reservations In—480-497-2478

Pima Air & Space Museum

November 27th, Monday…………….$128 The concept for Pima Air & Space Museum began in 1966, during the celebration of the U.S. Air Force’s 25th anniversary. The commanders of the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, along with the Military Aircraft Storage and Disposition Center (MASD), recognized that the historic World War II and 1950’s era aircraft stored on the base were rapidly disappearing. It wasn’t just the metal that was going into the smelters, but also the aviation heritage of the country. The base officials began to set aside examples of many types of aircraft stored in MASD’s yards. These planes were placed along the base’s fence line so that the public could view them. So much has happened since 1966! Today Pima Air & Space is one of the world’s largest non-government funded aerospace museums, featuring a display of over 400 aircraft and 125,000 artifacts. We’ll enjoy a 1-hour narrated tram tour through 80 acres, learning about the highlights of the museum’s collection. We’ll also explore The Dorothy Finley Aerospace Gallery and The Arizona Aviation Hall of Fame. The Pima Air & Space Museum is home to Flight Grill, a beautiful quickservice restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the Navy and Air Force fighters. We’ll enjoy lunch on self at Flight Grill, where the menu features hand-pressed burgers, fresh salads and Sonoran cuisine, as well as daily specials. This fascinating tour should not be missed! Rancho de la Osa

The Most Historic Place in Arizona! February 28th-29th, 2024 Wednesday-Thursday $599 Per Person Single Room Occupancy $469 Per Person Double Room Occupancy $429 Per Person Triple Room Occupancy High in the Sonoran Desert of southern Arizona, 590-acre Rancho De La Osa is surrounded by 120,000 acres of Buenos Aires Wildlife Refuge. Historically rich, Rancho De La Osa’s headquarters was originally a village for Tohono O’Odham Indians, possibly dating all the way back to the Hohokams. The ranch is also home to the oldest continually used building in Arizona—built by Jesuit missionaries in 1720—to be used as a place of worship, a trading post and an inn for travelers. In 1916 Pancho Villa attempted to take the ranch, leaving a cannonball lodged in an adobe wall. Following the Gadsden Purchase of 1853, the ranch became part of the United States and was purchased in the late 1800’s by cattle baron Colonel William Sturgis, who built the great hacienda. In 1925 Louisa Wetherill, a noted archaeologist purchased the ranch and opened it to guests the following year. By the 1930’s Rancho De La Osa became a political hotbed, hosting President Lyndon Johnson and his wife Lady Bird, Vice President Hubert Humphrey, Senator Adlai Stevenson and many others. William Clayton famously wrote the Marshall Plan in what is now known as the Clayton House. Hollywood celebrities who visited the ranch included, Joan Crawford, Tom Mix and John Wayne, just to name a few. Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone with the Wind, spent time at the ranch and Zane Gray regularly wrote there. Today Rancho De La Osa offers a remarkable guest ranch experience, with fabulous food—much of it locally sourced—and a great wine list. There are endless activities to keep you busy from sunup to sundown, although many guests are drawn to the ranch for its tranquility and remarkable scenery. Day One: We’ll leave the Valley with a stop for lunch on self, and a little sightseeing, in the charming artist’s hamlet of Tubac. Later, back in the Transits, we’ll head for Sasabe, Arizona, where the adventure really begins! We’ll check into our rooms and take some time for a refresh, before heading into the dining room for a fabulous dinner, included. Day Two: A delicious breakfast will be served buffet style in the dining room, included. The morning is yours to enjoy. Rancho De La Osa is a wildlife photographer’s dream, and you’ll want to discover every corner of this fascinating property. Several ala carte activities are available at an additional price, including a one-hour horseback ride for $40. Early afternoon, we’ll enjoy lunch in the dining room, included, before getting back on the road. We’ll explore an incredibly scenic loop tour of Buenos Aires Wildlife Refuge, as we sightsee our way back to the Valley. This whirlwind tour includes so much!
