Vitamin C

for summertime skincare Formerly known as Vitamin C Renewal, the Intense Defense with Vitamin C range from Avalon Organics helps fight environmental aggressors such as UV rays and pollution. These agents create free radicals on the skin that cause premature signs of visible ageing. Studies have shown that antioxidants can neutralise these damaging free radicals. The Intense Defense collection of skincare products balances with vitamin C, white tea and lemon bioflavonoids to help defend skin and support its natural cellular renewal cycle.

• Boosts your skin’s own defence against UV exposure (Dermatological Surgery, 2008 & Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, 2012 & The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology, 2010). Vitamin C is more beneficial when added to a blend of other antioxidants and cell-communicating ingredients. For this reason, Avalon Organics have blended white tea and citrus bioflavonoids. It is thought that applying white tea to the skin inhibits the activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP). MMP levels increase with age, and this so collagen and elastin perform their assigned task of maintaining your skin’s freshness while they stop functioning as appetizers for wrinkle-inducing, firmness-reducing enzymes. MMP, or. All skin contains MMP, which is healthy, but the amount increases with age. Unfortunately, increased levels of MMP means the molecule gobbles up collagen and elastin in our skin. White tea can help delay this.

Vitamin C provides potent antioxidant protection in skincare, shielding skin from damaging free radicals. The most abundant forms of free-radical damage are environmental factors we can’t escape—think sun damage, pollution and oxygen—that assault skin on a daily basis, but

Bioflavonoids have the ability to neutralize reactive oxygen species by donating one of their electrons, thus stabilizing the molecule and breaking the oxidative chain. This can result in visible signs of healthy, more vibrant skin. It’s important to remember that all antioxidants, including vitamin C, are vulnerable to destabilizing when exposed to air and light (Skin Research and Technology, 2008). So always store in the right conditions and use before the best before date to ensure you are using efficacious and stable products! It’s also important to mention that vitamin C forms are effective in lower concentrations, so don’t get caught up in the belief that only higher strengths are beneficial for skin. Research has shown that concentrations as low 0.6% provide antioxidant and anti-aging benefits to skin (Skin Research and Technology, 2008).

that’s where topical vitamin C has been proven to help (Dermatological Surgery, 2008 & Dermatology Research and Practice, 2012).

Without question, vitamin C is a powerful tool in your anti-ageing arsenal. For best results, use as part of a skincare regimen that includes a daily broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Vitamin C in skincare products can have a multitude of positive effects, including• Reduce the appearance of age spots and hyperpigmentation, and other types of sun damage, such as premature lines and wrinkles. • Boost collagen production, thus firming the skin • Reduce inflammation and irritation • Fade post-breakout red marks by improving skin’s natural healing response • Increase the effectiveness of your sunscreens

Skincare Focus: Acne

Acne is commonly associated with teen skin, but more and more women are also experiencing the condition. For teens, when we hit puberty, testosterone levels in both boys and girls can increase, which causes an overproduction of sebum from our sebaceous glands. We need sebum in our For acne or skin prone to blemishes skin as it acts as a natural moisturiser, and breakouts, look for products to but when too much is produced our target these problems. Natural ingredients that may be beneficial for this

HOW DOES ACNEDOTE WORK?

skin issue include Willow Bark Extract, Aloe Vera, Chamomile, Salicylic Acid, Tea Tree Oil, Honey, Lemon and Oatmeal. Do not look for products to “dry out” the skin as this will only cause the affected areas to produce more oil in the long term, and also do not be scared to use products that contain the right types of oil, as oil balances oil in the skin. Besides from Tea Tree, you may also wish to consider Bergamot, Clove and Lavender. Always remember that what you put in your body affects your skin as well as what you put on it. Limit caffeine and alcohol intake, don’t smoke, and drink water like it is going out of fashion. Acne can be caused by deficiency in Zinc and Essential Fatty Acids. Good sources of zinc include shellfish such as oysters, beef and lamb, spinach, cashews and pumpkin seeds. Make sure you eat a healthy, balanced diet with lots of oily fish to provide EFAs, along with a spectrum of colourful, antioxidant-packed fruits and vegetables.

Try Alba Botanica’s AcneDote to Remedy Acne in Teens and Adults Alike Acne at any age is no fun at all. Whether going back to school with breakouts and blemishes, or a stressed out adult experiencing hormonal acne, Alba Botanica’s range of products, AcneDote, is formulated especially to target breakouts, blemishes and acne in skins of all ages.

pores can become clogged, leading to spots. In our 20s and 30s, hormones (both sex and stress) can be unbalanced and this tends to manifest itself in breakouts and blemishes around the chin and jawline. Many mainstream brands formulated to treat breakouts and acne contain alcohol. This can be very drying on the skin, and can leave it feeling tight, too tight for comfort! Whilst alcohol may help dry up sebum, it can send our sebaceous glands into overdrive as they try to compensate for the lack of sebum in the skin. In the long run, alcohol-containing skincare may infact make breakouts and acne skin worse.

On the Spot

AcneDote contains 2% Salicylic Acid, naturally derived from Willow Bark Extract, along with skin soothing ingredients such as Aloe and Chamomile to calm inflammation and redness. Salicylic Acid works by thoroughly cleaning the skin’s surface and also helps to slough away dead skin cells. Note, this is no quick fix and it can take three weeks or longer for skin to respond to this regimen.

5) 2 - 3 times a week, use the Face & Body Scrub, formulated with ground walnut shell. This exfoliator gently foams to help scrub away oil, dirt and pore clogging dead skin cells. Gentle enough to be used daily, if necessary.

4) Many customers complain that their skin is dry even though they are suffering from acne. This is where the Oil Control Lotion comes in. It’s light enough to keep skin oiland shinefree, but delivers enough moisturisation to take away any feeling of tightness in the skin. To use, apply to a freshly

THE ACNEDOTE SKINCARE REGIMEN 1) A good skincare regimen starts with a decent cleansing product. Deep Pore Wash is just this a gentle foaming was to help fight breakouts. To use, apply to wet face using small, upward circular motions, massaging into a foamy lather. Rinse thoroughly. In the evening, to ensure all pollutants, makeup and bacteria are removed from your skin, we recommend a double cleanse. 2) After cleansing, tone with Deep Clean Astringent. This product cleans deep down in the pores, neutralising acnecausing bacteria and reducing breakouts in just eight hours*. Apply

founding director and creator of international green beauty brand Antipodes has had from the very start, back in 2006: “A desire to create premium scientifically validated organic beauty products from fully sustainable sources which can be used everyday by everyday women”.

We identified a significant market opportunity to produce skincare products that were certified organic and sourced from natural compounds that could also stand up to robust scientific scrutiny. My background is in pure science therefore I’m a firm believer in the importance of scientifically validating the Antipodes beauty products. My desire is to create premium scientifically validated organic beauty products from fully sustainable sources which can be used every day by everyday women. Along with our Research & Development team, we identified a significant market opportunity to produce skincare products that were certified organic and sourced from natural compounds that could also stand up to robust scientific scrutiny. Scientific validation has been the number one priority of the company ever since.

What makes Antipodes different to other organic & natural brands? Scientific validation has been the number one priority of the company ever since. Antipodes has invested over $400K in Research and Development within 3 years, and has secured a government Ministry of Science and Innovation grant, which matches our investment dollar for dollar. Antipodes combines in vitro laboratory investigations with human clinical trials to investigate product formulations involving New Zealand-sourced bioactive botanical ingredients. These independent tests have shown Antipodes products to significantly stimulate collagen production at a cellular level. More collagen means more youthful skin - plumper, smoother, healthier. Alongside the science is the real proof – rave reviews from customers - that Antipodes products are improving the appearance and health of their skin. My desire is to create premium scientifically validated organic beauty products What does the future hold for Antipodes in the UK with regards to new products etc?

The UK market is exciting and dynamic, and also incredibly competitive. Consumers are seeking scientifically validated products, and quality is top of agenda for many people. Our focus is on the development of products with a long life in the market, and genuine science, so whilst we are aware of trends, we don’t react to them. What I do predict is that brands with a strong culture will become more revered, (like Antipodes!) as women are searching for a brand that is aligned with their lifestyle, ethos and beliefs, whilst being results oriented, and fun to use.

Her pure, honest skincare that delivers outstanding results has found favour with women of all ages right around the world: Antipodes is now sold in nine countries and some 300 stores throughout its homeland New Zealand. Adding a pop of colour to your nails can be the crowning last step to complete your outfit, or maybe you just like how clean your nails look with a hint of colour on them. However, what most nail polish lovers don’t think about whenever they get their nails done at the salon or give themselves a manicure at home, is that most popular nail polish brands contain rather harmful ingredients to make your nails look colourful.

Here we share how to paint your nails like a pro Think about what happens when you go for a manicure at the salon.

5. After rinsing thoroughly and patting dry, apply your favourite moisturiser to your hands (remember you won’t be able to do this for an hour or so afterwards!) 6. Now’s the time to apply the nail polish base coat. Always check the instructions of your particular product, but non-toxic base coats tend to take around 2-3 minutes to dry. 7. Next apply the first layer of colour nail polish, and leave for as long as the instructions say. 8. Follow up with a second coat of nail polish 9. Apply the top coat. Try not to touch anything for an hour to ensure no smudging!

1. Firstly, remove any nail polish that is currently on your nails. 2. Then soak your hands to soften cuticles and make it easier to remove any hard skin or to push back your cuticles. 3. Next, clip, file and buff your nails. Buffing helps ensure that there is a good smooth surface to apply the nail polish base coat to. 4. For an extra indulgent affair, use a facial exfoliator to treat your hands. 16

Flying means being in close proximity to a lot of people, but in fact you are more likely to pick a bug up in the airport than on the airplane. Ensuring you get adequate sleep before you fly and drinking enough water and remaining hydrated throughout the flight will help your immune system stay strong and fight off any potential illness. Prior to your travel you may wish to take an immune support formula to bolster your immunity. Look for ingredients such as vitamin C, Astragalus, Garlic and Elderberry. You may also wish to consider an Omega-3 as supplementation with this increases the activity of white blood cells that fight dangerous bacteria, preventing infection Omega-3 also protects the lungs from respiratory tract infections, which occur in 20% of all Travellers[1].

What is

HAY FEVER? Hay fever is an allergy to pollen from grass, hay, trees or weeds. Those allergic to tree pollen suffer with symptoms early Spring, grass and hay Spring/Summer and weeds any time from Spring through to Autumn. Pollens all contain proteins which cause antibodies to release histamine which in turn causes cells in the nasal cavity, sinuses and eyes to become irritated and inflamed. Whether we suffer from hay fever or not is all down to our immune systems. Also, the chance that you will suffer from hayfever are greater if your parents suffer from hay fever or asthma.

H

ay fever symptoms are the

result of our immune system reacting to harmless pollen particles in the same way as our immune system would respond to harmful antigens. An antigen is any substance that causes your body to produce antibodies, ‘Y’ shaped proteins that protect our bodies from infection and disease. In this immune response, immunoglobulin E antibodies (IgE) detect the pollen ‘antigens’ and activate mast cells and T helper cells (specifically type 2 or Th2 cells). The increase of Th2 cells and the mast cell histamine release in the mucosa and peripheral blood result in inflammation, hay fever symptoms and atopic conditions. This reaction within the body results in aggravating symptoms such

as sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, running nose, and itchy skin. In layman’s terms, little pieces of pollen enter our body, our body thinks it is under attack, releases antibodies and histamine which in turn causes inflammation of our cells creating the aforementioned symptoms. Two essentials hay fever sufferers should not leave the house without are: sunglasses, the bigger the better as they are acting as a barrier to prevent pollen entering the eyes; and tissues, because nobody likes an unprepared snuffler/ sniffler/sneezer on public transport, in the office or in the pub!

Five Top Tips for a Little Daily Detox The to detox or not to detox question still divides many individuals, experts included. Some say that although your liver is a well-functioning organ designed to detoxify your body of moderate amounts of toxins, such as alcohol and inorganic matter, if you live a stressful life, in the city, and consume a far from perfect diet (including trans fats, artificial sweeteners, colours and the like), then your body may well thank you for a detox. Others argue that there is little scientific evidence to back up the notion of detoxing, and that your body is a detoxifying machine - regularly expelling and processing impurities through not just your liver, but also your kidneys, lungs and intestine.

W

Whatever camp you sit in for detoxing, there are little steps than can be taken every day to help your body keep itself as pure as possible. Here are our five top tips for a little daily detox Eat organic whole foods - this is important not because of the nutrient density of foods, but rather to avoid pesticides used on non-organic produce, and artificial flavours, sweeteners and

colours used in processed foods. Ensure you eat at least five portions of fruit and veg a day, taking in a broad spectrum of colours, as part of a varied balanced diet. Foods that can help your body’s detoxifying pathway include greens, such as wheat grass, barley, spirulina, chlorella and alfalfa, an coconut oil.

2

Drink lots of water - this point often divides opinion also, however drinking more water aids your body’s elimination process by keeping your bowels well-lubricated.

Magnesium: The Mighty Mineral

Magnesium is essential for over 300 critical metabolic reactions that take place within our bodies, including both structural and functional roles. Magnesium ranks fourth in overall abundance within the body, but intracellularly is second, with potassium coming in first. Around 25g of magnesium is contained within the average person, 60% of this in the skeleton, 27% in muscles, 6% inside other cells and the remaining 7% outside our cells

improve countless aspects of health. These include insomnia, depression, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, endothelial dysfunction, diabetes, osteoporosis, migraine headaches, and asthma. Magnesium can contribute towards improving sleep quality, calming the nervous system, improving brain function, preventing metabolic syndrome in newborns, and treating ADHD and hyperactivity.

Reduce body fat

We have already touched on several factors magnesium is involved in that contribute to fat reduction – regulation of glucose/ insulin sensitivity, stress hormone reduction, decreasing inflammation and maximising protein synthesis. All of these aid fat loss, particularly fat around the middle – abdominal fat.

ATP production

Without magnesium, it is impossible for the body to produce adenosine tri-phosphate, the universal currency of energy within the body. Magnesium provides stability in ATP by creating a complex with the molecule by binding to the phosphate groups.

As an active individual or athlete there are even more reasons why you may wish to supplement your diet with magnesium -

Ion transport

Magnesium is required for ions, such as potassium and calcium, to cross cell membranes. This means it is responsible for a healthy-functioning nervous system, a regular heart beat and muscle contractions.

Faster recovery

Increase anabolic hormones

Magnesium helps with muscle cramps and spasms associated with endurance exercise. Athletes partaking in prolonged exercise may become magnesium deficient because of increased magnesium losses in sweat. The more anaerobic the exercise, the great the movement of magnesium from plasma into erythrocytes.

Magnesium is crucial for fat metabolism and therefore production of testosterone. Studies have also shown increased growth hormone and IGF-1 levels with adequate magnesium intake.

Get stronger

Harder workouts

Research has shown that taking magnesium during periods of resistance training makes you stronger. A study found that a group that took 8mg of magnesium per kg of body weight a day improved strength significantly compared to a control group who only trained.

A study has shown that taking magnesium supplements not only allowed athletes to run at maximum intensity for longer but also the athletes had increased VO2 max.

Immune function

Maximise protein synthesis

Magnesium supports immune function, and low immunity can hamper post-workout recovery by taking our body’s focus away from muscle repair.

Our bodies need sufficient magnesium in order for protein synthesis to occur. Magnesium is necessary for the activation of amino acids and the attachment of mRNA to the ribosome. Research has shown a positive correlation between magnesium levels and lean tissue growth rates, i.e. protein synthesis.

Improved flexibility

Tight muscles are loosened in the presence of magnesium. Low magnesium results in a buildup of lactic acid which causes pain and tightness in muscles.

Decrease inflammation to improve heart health According to many medical professionals, magnesium deficiency is uncommon. However the blood serum test used by most doctors to diagnose magnesium deficiency is not an accurate measure, due to the fact that only 1% of the body’s magnesium content is found within blood serum. The body is set up to maintain magnesium levels in blood serum within a tight range, so it’s possible that magnesium levels in the blood appear normal whilst elsewhere there is deficiency. A more revealing test is the EXA test which measures magnesium levels within the cells.

also a good source. It’s important to point out however that due to intensive farming practices many soils (organic included) are nutrient-poor, and inorganically-grown vegetables contain almost no vitamins and minerals. This means most people will benefit from magnesium supplementation of their diet. The recommended daily intake of magnesium for adults is 420mg for men and 320mg for women. Athletes trying to build lean muscle mass should be aware that high protein intake can inhibit the absorption of magnesium, 1g of protein per pound of bodyweight is a good maximum to follow. Furthermore, high protein diets also contribute to increased loss of magnesium through urination. Likewise, refined and processed foods, and sugars can upset magnesium balance within the body. The best diet one can follow includes a rainbow of vegetables, low GI fruits, whole grains and moderate amounts of lean protein for the majority of the time. Besides protein, dietary fibre, zinc, vitamin D, high fat diets and calcium rich foods also all decrease the body’s ability to absorb magnesium, and high levels of zinc and vitamin D increase the body’s need for magnesium.

Groups at increased risk of deficiency include those with renal or gastrointestinal disorders, alcoholics and the elderly. There are no definitive symptoms to suggest magnesium deficiency but weakness, fatigue, loss of appetite, muscle tremors and spasms, nausea, vomiting and changes in personality may all suggest magnesium deficiency. In athletes, a lack of increased strength from one workout to the next suggests poor recovery which may be an indication of a lack of magnesium in the body. Magnesium makes up part of the chlorophyll molecule – the green pigment that gives plants their colour. Therefore, green leafy vegetables are a great source of magnesium, and whole grains, nuts and meats are

Being part of so many enzymatic reactions in the body it goes without saying that magnesium can 26

Alkalisation

Inflammation of all tissues in the body increases oxidative stress, cardiovascular tissue included. Hard workouts with inadequate recovery can contribute to heart disease. A study has found that magnesium deficiency leads to increased inflammation in the body, affecting blood vessels, cardiovascular and intestinal tissues.

Magnesium helps restore the body’s pH balance and reduces lactic acid, which is partially response for Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS).

Stronger bones

We always associate calcium with building stronger bones however without sufficient amounts of vitamin D and magnesium available, calcium is useless. Magnesium activates the pathway in the body which converts vitamin D into its active form that helps with calcium absorption and bone building. Magnesium is also involved in the hormone reaction pathway that leads to the release of calcitonin, a hormone which preserves bone structure and pulls calcium out of the blood and soft tissues and back into bones where it belongs. Magnesium also suppresses parathyroid hormone, which breaks bone down.

Improve insulin sensitivity

Having insufficient magnesium in the body makes it difficult to lose weight and build lean mass as the body’s sensitivity to insulin is significantly decreased. This is a vicious circle as increased insulin resistance means additional loss of magnesium.

Lower cortisol levels

As previously mentioned magnesium calms the nervous system and inhibits the release of stress hormone norepinephrine, whilst removing excess cortisol to bring levels back to normal.

Superfoods

for super beauty!

With so many food fads and trends in today’s market, it can be difficult sometimes to separate the wheat from the chaff (note wheat is definitely not a superfood - far from it!) To stand a chance of recognising what’s a superfood and what’s just another clever marketing ploy, we must first understand what a superfood is. A superfood is a food which is richer and denser in phytonutrients than your average food and has positive health benefits with few/no negatives. The problem with the term superfood is that there is no standard set, no minimum bar that the food has to pass to become super. But, without a doubt, some foods are more nutritious, just like some are more delicious, than others! It’s important that we eat a well balanced diet to maintain our wellbeing, healthy weight and to let our bodies perform at their very best. Some superfoods that are easy to consider adding to your diet (you may even be eating them already!) are-

Stressed in the city? Tired of typing? Moody in meetings? The stress of work, combined with the often sedentary nature of our jobs, does our immune system no favours but did you know that our stress levels are not dictated by the activity we are doing, but how we react to the situation. Our reactions are governed by our nervous system, and there are several things we can do to support a healthy nervous system function:

7 Top Tips for A Healthy Nervous System Function

Kinetic’s Must-Stock Stress Supplements

Exercise regularly, or at least be active. Even a 20 minute walk every day is better than nothing. The stress of being cooped up in an office all day can reduce your energy and concentration. This stress can also greatly reduce immunity and feelings of wellbeing as a result. Why not take a walk in your lunch hour? Even gentle exercise will increase blood flow to the brain, which will improve cognitive function and boost energy levels naturally. . Yoga is incredibly good for improving your all round health, but also does amazing things for your nervous system.

Nature’s Answer Liquid vitamin B-Complex

Reduce coffee and other stimulants. Coffee may provide immediate improvement to energy and concentration, but it will eventually leave you fatigued and lacking focus. Swap coffee for green tea to have a more gentle stimulating effect with the added benefit of antioxidants. Don’t smoke. Ever. If you’re a smoker in times of stress, realise that you are actually having a detrimental effect on the situation! Smoking affects the neurotransmitters in your brain, including serotonin, dopamine and GABA.

-

Some research indicates B-complex vitamins are linked to improved mood and that B vitamins are important for sleep and the formation of several important neurotransmitters associated with stress.[1]

Nature’s Answer Celery Seed -Celery seed does a great job at keeping stress hormones in the blood at a healthy level. When stress hormones are neutralized, blood vessels can expand and pass more blood throughout the body, relieving the overall increased pressure.

Terranova Smooth Synergy - Featuring Avena Sativa is one of the most soothing and gentle tonics for supporting healthy nerves. In addition to gramine and avenin, milky oat seeds are a rich source of nerve tonifying B-vitamins and minerals. Also in high quantities is Ashwaghanda Root which, like ginseng and rhodiola, has historically been used for its adaptogenic properties and may support energy metabolism and nervous system health.

Sleep. A lot. Our circadian rhythm dictates that the most regenerative hours of sleep are those before midnight. Whilst in some jobs and lifestyles, bed before midnight is not possible every night, at least try to make it 2-3 times a week. Set priorities, and focus on one task at a time. As we get older, our multitasking functions decrease, and recently the media has denounced the idea of multitasking as increasing efficiency. Make a to-do list of everything, prioritise tasks, and set realistic deadlines. Eat a balanced diet; ensure you eat a lot of sources of B-vitamins, fresh fruits and vegetables in a wide spectrum of colours, and stay hydrated. Find ways to manage stress. Stress has been found to be a contributing factor to many health concerns and conditions such as insomnia, IBS, high blood pressure, and low immunity to name a few. Stress levels at work can escalate when racing to meet a deadline or dealing with a disgruntled customer. Try to implement stress management techniques throughout your work day to keep stress levels under control. Examples of these strategies include taking a lunchtime walk, performing 5 minute breathing exercises or improving time and project management skills.

31

Ener-C - When the body is exposed to significant amounts of stress, it releases the hormone, cortisol. Cortisol is directly linked to the release of insulin, immune processes, and other pertinent bodily functions. When there is an over-saturation of cortisol in the body, muscle tissue can decrease in mass, cognitive processes are hindered, and other important bodily processes take a toll. Studies suggest that healthy vitamin C supplementation can neutralize the amount of cortisol being produced by the body.[2]

We’ve had it drummed into us for years: saturated fats are bad for you. The fact is, all saturated fats are not created equal. Some saturated fats occur naturally, whilst others are hydrogenated. This process artificially manipulates vegetable and seed oils by adding hydrogen atoms whilst heating the oil, producing a rancid, thickened oil that really only benefits processed food shelf life. These unsaturated fats, artificially manipulated into saturated fats, are also called trans fats, have been touted as healthy and heart friendly for years by vegetable oil companies in whose best interest it was to promote them as such. But trans fats are not healthy, and they have been ousted as the villain, however much confusion remains over other saturated fats, coconut oil included.

What’s So Special About Coconut Oil? Coconut oil is packed full of the good fats that your body needs. It’s also so easy to incorporate into your diet. The medium chain fatty acids in coconut oil are digest more easily that the fats in say butter or eggs and when ingested at surplus requirement are not stored sent directly to the liver to be converted to energy. This raises the metabolism which will contribute to weight loss. Coconut oil is also used by the body to make hormone substances which control blood pressure, and aids absorption of several different nutrients. It is also anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial.

which has anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-protozoa properties.[1] Monolaurin is a monoglyceride that can actually destroy lipid coated viruses such as: • HIV, herpes • Measles • Influenza virus • Various pathogenic bacteria • Protozoa such as giardia lamblia Lauric acid is a powerful virus and gram-negative bacteria destroyer, and coconut oil contains the most lauric acid of any substance on Earth! Capric acid, another coconut fatty acid present in smaller amounts, has also been added to the list of coconut’s antimicrobial components. This is one of the key reasons you should consider consuming coconut oil, because there aren’t many sources of monolaurin in our diet. But the health benefits of coconut oil don’t stop there.[2] Coconut oil is also about 2/3 medium-chain fatty

acids (MCFAs), also called medium-chain triglycerides or MCTs. These types of fatty acids produce a whole host of health benefits. Coconut oil is nature’s richest source of these healthy MCFAs. By contrast, most common vegetable or seed oils comprise long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs), also known as long-chain triglycerides or LCTs. Let me tell you why these long-chain fatty acids are not as healthy for you as the MCFAs found in coconut oil: LCFAs are more difficult to breakdown and require enzymes, whilst MCFAs permeate cell membranes and do not require any enzymes to break them down prior to utilisation MCFAs are easily digested, LCFAs are a burden on the digestive system; MCFAs are sent directly to the liver rather than being stored as body fat, LCFAs are stored as fat MCFAs stimulate metabolism, leading to weight loss LCFAs can be deposited within your arteries in lipid forms such as cholesterol. What About Hemp Oil?

Rich in protein, omega-fatty acids and fiber, hemp has a nutty-tasting seed with a wide variety of uses. Hemp is loaded with all 20 amino acids (including the 9 essential), it’s a densely nutritious food and an excellent addition to the diet of anyone looking for plant-based protein. The protein found in hemp seed is very digestible, making it a great choice for sensitive diets.

How About Flax Oil? Flax oil contains more Omega-3 fatty acids than any other botanical in the world. Yet that high content of extremely degradable fats means it can spoil if not handled just right. Over-pressing of flax oil is common, which unduly heats the oil, damages its integrity, diminishes its nutritional value, and ruins its naturally nutty flavor. Barlean’s proprietary, truly cold-pressed technology protects the perishable flax oil from the damaging effects of heat, light and oxygen. Barlean’s organic, pure flax oils are sourced from premium North American flaxseed only, are packaged in opaque bottles to prevent oxidation, and are freshness dated to ensure the very highest quality and best taste.

Cultivated for thousands of years throughout Asia and the Middle East before finally making its way to Europe and then the Americas, hemp is an extremely versatile and hardy plant. Its many uses include food products, textiles, building materials, bio-plastics, auto parts and more. Hemp is not to be confused with marijuana. Although the two plants are related, hemp products contain only trace levels of THC (less than 10ppm) and will not cause a psychoactive effect. It was once widely grown in the United States for its fibre.

Coconut contains lauric acid, a medium-chain fatty acid also found in human breast milk. Lauric acid makes up about 50% of coconut oil. Your body converts lauric acid into monolaurin, Kinetic Essential Oils: Nutiva coconut OIl, Nutiva Hemp Oil, Barlean’s Fortiflax product 32

rotein powders are the hottest sports nutrition product since electrolyte-rich sports drinks. Once reserved for body builders and those wanting to bulk up, more people are utilising the power of protein powders for various reasons, including • growth, either through adolescence or building muscle • when starting to work out or increasing workout intensity or frequency – the body needs protein to recover and repair thus preventing injury • immune support – protein is essential for making antibodies • recovery from injury - the body needs protein to repair itself and accelerate healing • vegetarian or vegan-ism - it can be difficult to get enough protein into the diet when meat, chicken, fish, dairy and eggs are eliminated, so protein powders are an easy way to compensate for this • trying to lose fat, whether overweight or cutting a leaner figure

and cons -

Whey is a water soluble milk protein containing all essential amino acids and many of the non-essential, and available in three forms; > Isolate – provides a high yield of protein (around 90%) and contains a low level of allergens, i.e. lactose. > Hydrolysate – means in effect the whey is predigested, however it is thought to be less efficient once inside the body. There are also questions about the purity of Whey Hydrosylate as the processing methods may give rise to the occurrence of aspartic acid (a component of aspartame) and glutamic acid (MSG). > Concentrate – the cheapest option, with higher carb and fat levels than the others, but also the least altered form of whey. When buying whey protein powders you should always watch out for sweeteners of both the natural and artificial variety, and ideally look for whey sourced from grass-fed animals.

When selecting the right protein powder always look for the best quality, not the most expensive product with the best marketing campaign! Learn to read ingredients lists, look for organic, always non-GMO, and minimal additional ingredients. Now, let’s look at the different types of protein and weigh up the pros

Casein is the other dairy protein and unlike fast-digested whey, it is slow to be digested. This makes it a good choice for spiking protein synthesis and also hunger management.

Amazing Grass Raw Reserve Greens & Protein - 14g of protein per serving from a protein blend of organic brown rice, organic hemp seed, organic quinoa and organic pumpkin seed

Egg protein powder is a good source of vitamins A, B and D, and vitamin E if the chickens are grass-fed. Egg protein powders are around 80% protein, with 9% leucine, the amino acid that stimulates muscle building after eating. The only protein powder with more leucine is whey (around 15%.) A typical serving of 30g provides around 25g protein, the equivalent of four eggs, however 20g of fat would also be consumer in four eggs unless you were to remove the yolks (which in my opinion is a real waste as they are so wholesome and full of goodness!)

Amazing Grass Amazing Meal - 16g of protein per serving from a protein blend of organic quinoa, organic pumpkin seed, organic brown rice and organic hemp protein Nutiva Organic Hemp Protein - 15g of raw organic hemp protein per serving. With 50% protein, 26% fiber (90% insoluble, 10% soluble), magnesium, iron and zinc, and beneficial fats, our Hemp Protein 15g is one of nature’s perfect superfoods. One serving provides 15 grams of raw organic protein and 8 grams of fiber (32% DV).

Hemp protein powders contain all the amino acids, including the non-essential ones. It is also a source of essential fatty acids, making it a good option for vegetarians and vegans. When looking to buy hemp protein powder always look for one that is hexane-free. Hemp is not the best protein powder for shakes and smoothies, but does work well in recipes and foods such as pancakes, muffins and oatmeal. Hemp protein powders are also rich in fibre, containing around 90% insoluble and 10% soluble fibre.

Nutiva Organic Hemp Protein Hi Fiber - 11g of raw organic hemp protein per serving. With 37% protein, 40% fiber (90% insoluble, 10% soluble), magnesium, iron and zinc, and beneficial fats, our Hemp Protein Hi-Fiber is one of nature’s perfect superfoods. One serving provides 11 grams of raw organic protein and 12 grams of fiber (48% DV). Nutiva Hemp Shakes - 10g of raw organic hemp protein per serving, 20% of the DV of fibre and the bonus of good-for-you essential fatty acids, all wrapped up in delicious chocolate and vanilla flavours.

When looking for a brown rice protein powder it’s important to search out one that is sprouted. This process includes the bran and endosperm layers and means that the amino acid profile is improved and becomes whole. Rice bran also contains over 100 known antioxidants! For those whom taste is an issue, rice protein is one of the most palatable of protein powders – it’s easier to blend and less chalky. Also look for a bio-fermented product, which means the plant’s own natural enzymes are used to create a final product with considerably more bio-available protein is left in the final product.

Jarrow Brown Rice Protein - 12g of brown rice protein per serving, available in original or vanilla, chocolate or mixed berry flavours. Jarrow Whey Protein - 17g of protein, 8g of amino acids, 4g of BCAAs per serving Jarrow Iso-Rich Soy Protein - 25g of soy protein per serving

Pea protein comes from yellow split peas and has an incredible 98% digestion rate. It’s satiating, making a good protein to aid weight loss. The down side with pea protein is although it may contain the full spectrum of amino acids, it can often be very low in cysteine and methionine, the sulphur-containing amino acids, but high in lysine. For this reason, many products blend rice and pea protein together, as brown rice protein is high in cysteine and methionine but low in lysine.
