SETTING, ACHIEVING and SUSTAINING GOALS Module 109 D Dr Mario Denton

GENERAL LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Participants will be able to… • 1. Recognize that the personal vision emerges from God’s purpose for one’s life. • 2. Be convinced that setting goals for life and ministry is biblical. • 3. Prepare Personal Mission Statement. • 4. Integrate one’s goals to the mission which is formulated out of the vision. • 5. Write personal goals in the areas of ministry, family, finance, health, social, and intellectual growth.

OBJECTIVES OF THIS SESSION: Be convinced that setting goals for life and ministry is biblical.

Passage to memorize Joshua 1:9 “ Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

Different people have different goals • One man at church always prayed the same prayer – so much the same that everyone could go three words ahead of him. Apart of it went, • “Oh Lord, since we last called upon Thee, cobwebs have come between us and Thee. We pray that Thou will remove the cobwebs that may once again look upon Thy face.”

Different people have different goals • One Sunday, just as he got to the phrase “remove the cobwebs”, another brother spoke a little louder than he inteded. • “Oh Lord, kill the spider!”

WHERE ARE WE GOING? WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO? WHAT IS IMPORTANT AROUND HERE? WHAT DO WE WANT TO ACHIEVE, BY WHEN AND AT WHAT COST? HOW WILL WE REACH OUR OBJECTIVES?

CASE STUDY: JOHN • Hallo Mario • My name is John and I am one of your MBA students who is currently attending your class. • On Saturday morning you discussed the three questions that can tell one so much about oneself, namely: Who am I? What is the reason for my existence? Where am I going? • You said that we could answer these questions and that you might be able to help us in this regard if we sent the answers to you. • I have answered the questions and would

Who am I? • As I’ve said, my name is John and I am 33 years old. I started my career as operations manager. • The business was subsequently sold and I was retrenched. I then became selfem ployed, but things did not work out as they should have. Now I am keeping myself occupied with odd jobs while studying for an MBA. • And this is where the problem lies. I have applied for a number of jobs, without success. I am married to a wonderful woman who is very understanding of my situation and me. • The problem is that one starts losing faith in oneself as one disappointment follows on the other. My wife is currently expecting our

What is the reason for my existence? • In all honesty, I don’t really know. It is a struggle from one day to the next. I am only existing, not living! • I would like to live for my wife and child, but because of the problems and worries of every day I only see the here and now. • If I were to do an EQ test now, I would definitely be below the acceptable levels.

Where am I going? • • •

• •

I am currently on the short list for a job again. I believe that should I be successful, it would be very difficult for me to make a real contribution to the success of the business. Furthermore, it is an accounting position – of which I have some experience but which I do not think is really my line of work. However, I am desperate and will do anything just to be able to work. It is a vicious circle. For most of the day you are doing something you do not really enjoy, only to be very frustrated by the time you arrive home at the end of the day when you would like to spend quality time with your wife and children

The Mirror PrincipleThe first person we must examine is ourselves.

Mission statement I am, through Christ who strengthens me, an established, passionate, international marketplace minister, making a significant difference in business leaders’ lives by training, coaching, consulting and facilitating with them to learn, apply and teach God’s financial principles in their organisations

M aster in his study field. He knows where he is going and what he wants to achieve A vailable. He is available to serve it be professionally or in friendship R ight standing with God. Loves God and will seek ways to please God and want God’s blessings in what he does I luminates a servant-leadership character O bservant of what goes on around him. Identifies new ideas and challenges in his surrounding Words from Charmaine Kapp on his 50th birthday

Leaders are to serve people but obey God.

Invite others to ask you some tough questions Are your keeping your priorities straight?

But a leader who goes his own way and seeks to benefit only himself cannot be an effective instrument in God’s hand. God had to break Jacob to make him useful. Genesis 32: 24-32

Breaking before blessing • Jacob broke physically when the angel dislocated his hip. • He also broke emotionally- he told the truth about his name and character. • From that moment on, Jacob began to fulfil his God-ordained destiny.

God blessed Jacob because: Jacob was alone with God. All distractions had been removed. v.24.

God blessed Jacob because: Jacob was hungry for God v.26. He desperately wanted to receive what God had for him.

God blessed Jacob because: Jacob was broken by God vv 25-28. He allowed God to break him and change him.

God blessed Jacob because: Jacob was honest with God v 27. He stepped pretending in order to let God work in his life.

Leaders cannot do anything of significance in the kingdom of God until they humble themselves before God and seek His face.

Leaders don’t set goals they set the standards They don’t merely set goals, they set standards that raise the bar for everyone.

Leaders don’t set goals they set the standards Malachi 1: 7,8 insists that these standards begin with our spiritual life.

Humility: The mark of a leader who finishes well.

Psalm 39: 4

“Lord remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered, and that my life is fleeing away.

“I amhereon earth for just a short while.”

Psalm119: 19

“… weareherefor but a short while.”

“… soon cut off and we fly away”

Psalm90: 10

Dag Hammarskjöld • "Never look down to test the ground before taking your next step; only he who keeps his eye fixed on the far horizon will find the right road.“ • "My philosophy of life is that if we make up our mind what we are going to make of our lives, then work hard toward that goal, we never lose somehow we win out." Ronald Reagan

Summary: Why set goals?

• Goals give direction in life. • Goals give a sense of purpose. • Goals give a set of guidelines for living. • Goals promote enthusiasm. • Goals give a resultsorientation.

IF YOU AIM AT NOTHING YOU ARE SURE TO HIT IT.

Some Food for Thought • REMEMBER : Opportunities never come to those who wait. They are captured by those who dare to attack. • HAVE YOU CONSIDERED? – We need to be interested in the future. That’s where we are going to spend the rest of our lives. • MEMORISE THIS – Whatever my life’s dream, I shall eventually succeed because I have put my whole heart into my dream.

GOD’S PROMISES AND CHALLENGES FOR FINISHING WELL

• I run straight to the goal with purpose in every step. I am not like a boxer who misses his punches. I Corinthians 9: 26. • My life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus. Acts 20: 24. • The Lord will work out his plans for my life. Psalm 138: 8. • Guide my steps by your words, so I will not be overcome by any evil. Psalm 119: 133.

“ A mission is a vision acted upon.”

John Haggai

Make a difference wherever you go? Be significant – stand out. Mario Denton

Closing comments Trust that you know understand: 1. The importance of setting goals. 2. The urgency of setting goals.

Make the difference. Stand out wherever you go. Be a lighthouse to the lost. Make it your burning desire. Mario

Prayer Focus • Father, In the name of Jesus, I surrender myself to walk in the Word. Your word living in me produces the Life in this world. • The word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. It makes my way plain before me. • I boldly and confidently say that my heart is fixed and established on the solid foundation – the Living

Remember my famous questions: • 1. Who are you? 2. Why do you exist? (What has God called you to do with your life?) 3.Tell me more about the person reading this slides seven years from now? 4. What are you currently doing towards the fulfilment of your goals?

Jesus said: Take what I have given you and change the world!

Feedback 1. How well was the objective of the subject explained? 2. How well did you understand the subject? 3. How well does the subject relate to your needs? 4. How well did the faculty involve you as participants? 5. How well were visuals & teaching aids used? 6. How well did you follow delivery? [Tone, speed, accent, etc.] 7. How well was class time managed? 8. How friendly, approachable, enthusiastic, and humorous was the faculty? 9. How motivated are you to practice what you have learned?

Learning, application and commitment: James 1: 22-25

• “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. • Do what it says. • Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in the mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

Learning, application and commitment • One of the Biblical truths (principles) that I have learned from this lesson was … • I intend to apply this truth (principle) in my business/Ministry by: ….. • With the help of the Holy Spirit, I will begin applying this truth immediately.

5 Strategy Questions • 1. Why do we exist?: PURPOSE • 2. What is our formula for success? MINISTRY RECIPE

• 3. What kind of organization should we be? ORGANISATIONAL CHARACTER • 4. What must we do and how will it happen? GOALS/PRIORITIES ACTIONS • 5. How will we win the support of our stakeholders? STRATEGIC CONVERSATION

DRAFTING OF A CORPORATE MISSION STATEMENT • Every organization has a mission, a purpose, a reason for being. • Often the mission is why the organization was first created. • It articulates the organization's essential nature, its values, and its work • An effective mission statement must resonate with the people working in and for the organization

Your mission statement should answer three key questions: • What are the opportunities or needs that we exist to address? (the purpose of the organization) • What are we doing to address these needs? (the business of the organization) • What principles or beliefs guide our work? (the values of the organization)

Mission Statement • The mission statement expresses what a church / organisation DOES to achieve its vision. • The vision statement expresses the end; the mission statement the means.

Your Mission Statement Should . . . • Express your organization's purpose in a way that inspires support and ongoing commitment • Motivate those who are connected to the organization • Be articulated in a way that is convincing and easy to grasp • Use proactive verbs to describe what you do • Be free of jargon • Be short enough so that anyone connected to the organization can readily repeat it
