Why leaders fail • In the recent past, we’ve witnessed the public downfall of leaders from almost every area of endeavour – business, politics, religion, and sports. • One day they’re on top of the heap, the next, the heaps on top of them. Managerial derailment

Warning sign # 1: Poor self management • Tragically, if a leader doesn’t take care of him- or herself, no one else will. • Leaders are often perceived to be superhuman, running on unlimited energy. Managerial derailment


Warning sign # 1: Poor self management • Clear your schedule and take care of yourself – it’s absolutely vital to your leadership that you continue to grow and develop, a task that can be accomplished only when your tank is full. Managerial derailment


Warning sign # 1: Poor self management • While leadership is invigorating, it is also tiring. • Leaders who fail to take care of their physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual needs are headed for disaster.

Warning sign # 2: Poor communication • A lack of focus and its resulting disorientation typically lead to poor communication. • And when leaders are unclear about their own purpose, they often hide their confusion and uncertainty in ambiguous communication. Managerial derailment

Warning sign # 3: Ethics slip • A leader’s credibility is the result of two aspects: what he or she does (competency) and who he or she is (character). • A discrepancy between these two aspects creates an integrity problem.

Warning sign # 3: Ethics slip • The highest principle of leadership is integrity. • When integrity ceases to be a leader’s top priority– that is the moment when a leader steps onto the slippery slope of failure.

Warning sign # 3: Ethics slip • It is imperative to your leadership that you constantly subject your life and work to the highest scrutiny. • Are there areas of conflict between what you believe and how you behave? Has compromise crept into your operational tool kit? Managerial derailment


1. No other gods • Has your business become your god? • Has your career become more important than God? • Are you willing to say No to your job in order to say Yes to God? • Has your absorption in your work blocked out the still, small voice? Managerial derailment


2. No making fake gods • Have you replaced God with things? • Are material things- the tangible here and now- more important than God himself? • Does your identity or self-worth come from God himself?

3. No making fake gods • Whose name do you revere more than God’s? • How about your own? Or your company’s name? • Do you defend God’s name as vigorously as your corporate image? • Are you as offended when God is slighted as when you are put down? Managerial derailment


4. Observe the Sabbath • No work on the seventh day. Are you, as an act of faith, laying down tools once per week so that time can be focused on God? • Are you encouraging employees, suppliers, contractors, customers to spend time with God each week? Managerial derailment


5. Honor your father and mother • This one comes with a promise … a God–guarantee. • What does it say about multigenerational and family businesses?

6. No murder • Have you in your competitiveness, killed someone’s reputation? • Have you called anyone an idiot? • Have you failed to look after the health of someone in your household?

7. No adultery • Have you been “mentally trying on” other peoples’ wives or husbands? • Have you been “checking out” anyone in the office? • Have you been faithful to your company? • Have you cheated on a partner? Managerial derailment


8. No stealing • Are your software licenses current? • Have you infringed a copyright, stolen intellectual property, or failed to acknowledge source? • Have you taken time, money or possessions from others? • Have you unfairly charged a customer? Have you dishonored a return policy, or voided a warranty? Managerial derailment


9. No lies • No slander, no half truths, no words behind someone’s back … a clean mouth all around. • Have you spoken evil of someone in business? • Have you failed to speak good of someone when others spoke evil? Managerial derailment


10. No Lust • Real estate, wife, business … all off limits. Don’t even go there, don’t even want to. • Have you looked at what others said, ‘I wish that were mine!’

Warning sign # 4: A shift in focus • Leaders are usually distinguished by their ability to “think big”. • But when their focus shifts, they suddenly start thinking small.

Warning sign # 4: A shift in focus • A more subtle leadership derailer is an obsession with “doing” rather than “becoming”. What the leader does then flows naturally from inner vision and character. • It is possible for a leader to become too action oriented and, in the process lose touch with the more important development of self. If you can’t write it on the back of your business card, then it’s a sure bet that your leadership is suffering from a lack of clarity. • Take the time necessary to get your focus back on what’s important. Warning sign # 5: Risk aversion • Leaders at risk often begin to be driven by a fear of failure rather than the desire to succeed. • Past successes create pressure for leaders: “Will I be able to sustain outstanding performance?” Managerial derailment


Warning sign # 5: Risk aversion • When driven by the fear of failure, leaders are unable to take reasonable risks. • They want to do only the tried and proven. Attempts at innovation – typically a key to their initial success – diminish and eventually disappear. Managerial derailment


Heed the signs • The warning signs in life – from stop lights to prescription labels – are there for our good. They protect us from disaster, and we would be foolish to ignore them. • Don’t be afraid to take on honest look at yourself. If any of the warnings ring true, take action today!
