Clarifying the VISION AND MISSION of the Organisation
C
hrist came to earth with a clear purpose. As he communicated this
to His disciples, they eventually understood who He was and why He came. At the end of His earthly ministry, He established the purpose and direction for the church with the Great Commission, which it continues to carry out today. Likewise, a Kingdom Business should have an enduring purpose that everyone in the organisation clearly understands, shares and supports. Leaders should establish clear, Godhonouring vision and mission statements and communicate them clearly to everyone in the organisation.
Module Objectives In this module you will learn how to:
2
1. Recognise
foundational Scriptural principles and practices for
establishing clear statements of organisational purpose and future direction 2. Develop
or refine your Vision Statement
3. Develop
or refine your Mission Statement
4. Communicate
your purpose and direction to members of your
organisation
Chapter Title Page
Biblical Principles for Clear Purpose and direction The practice of clarifying the vision and mission of the organisation is consistent with the principle of Godly Stewardship and is a common thread with Biblical leaders. Perhaps the finest example of this principle can be found in Jesus’ establishment of His church on earth. Jesus created vision for the church with His last words, promising His disciples: “… you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8 NKJV) With this vision, Jesus emphasised His enduring and eternal purpose for the church He had founded. The power of this vision has engaged and inspired millions of believers to spread the Christian faith throughout the world. Through the Great Commission, Jesus gave the church its specific and detailed mission to guide its actions:
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been
3
given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you. And lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:1820 NKJV) With this commission, Jesus identified: • What the church is to do (make disciples) • How it is to go about it (baptise and teach) • For whom it is done (all nations) The combined effect of these statements has given clear direction and purpose throughout its history thus far and “to the end of the age.”
Discussion: 1. How have these directional statements affected the actions of believers and the church?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------2. How do they apply to a modern-day business?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Additional study: You may wish to do additional reading about how God has given Biblical leaders and their followers direction in the following passages: • Genesis 12:1-4 – God’s promise to Abraham • Exodus 3:1-10 – God’s choosing of Moses • 1 Chronicles 22 – David’s charge to Solomon • Nehemiah 2 – God sends Nehemiah to rebuild Jerusalem’s wall Other reading about vision: • Habakkuk 2:2 • Proverbs 29:18 Focus
2. Clarifying the Vision and Mission of the organisation Step One: Develop a vision statement As with the example of Jesus’ vision for the church, organisations and the people in them need an enduring vision for the future. It is the responsibility of the organisation’s leaders to create, shape and instil that vision in the hearts and minds of everyone in the organisation. A vision should be: • An enduring pointer to your future • Compelling, challenging, tangible and immediate • Short vision statements or longer, more richly detailed vision scenarios
Create an enduring pointer to your future A vision is sometimes called a picture of your company in the future. Your vision is the inspiration pulling you into the future and is the framework for all your strategic planning.
5
A vision statement articulates your dreams and hopes for your business. It reminds everyone what you are trying to build. A vision statement may apply to an entire company, to a single division of that company or even a departmental team. Whether for all or part of an organisation, the vision statement answers the question, “Where are we going?”
Make it compelling, challenging, tangible and immediate A vision statement is primarily for you and other members of your company. It must present a compelling and challenging image for you and your employees and must be shared by all. Therefore, visions statements should be expressed in terms that every employee can aspire to, something greater than a financial objective that only stockholders would appreciate. While a vision statement doesn’t tell you how you’re going to get there, it does set the direction for your business planning. That’s why it’s important when crafting a vision statement to let your imagination go and dare to dream – and why it’s important that a vision statement captures your passion.
Choose a short vision statement or longer vision scenario Short vision statements can point to a future state or a future goal. Examples of each are: • Future state: We are a world-class ceramic technology and manufacturing company that operates on Biblical principles and glorifies Jesus Christ in the market-place. • Future goal: Our company will be recognised as one of the top one hundred companies to work for in South Africa. One of the most compelling Vision Goals of all time was US President John F. Kennedy’s national challenge to go to the moon.
6
“I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth. No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind or more important for the longrange exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish.” Because none of the technology to accomplish this goal was available in 1961, the goal was indeed audacious. However, the challenge presented by this goal was clear and compelling and caught the imagination of an entire nation and mobilised industry, government agencies, educational institutions and the individuals that comprised them. People were engaged, challenged, stretched and focused by this vision. As a result, the seemingly impossible accomplishment was realised on July 20, 1969. Longer vision scenarios create vivid word pictures of the future. One of the most compelling future-state scenarios presented, was Martin Luther King Jr’s “I have a dream” speech: “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be selfevident: that all men are created equal. “I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice and sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
“I have a dream today.
“I have a dream that one day down in Alabama with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification, one day, right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join
7
hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers. I have a dream today.
“I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together. This is our hope. This is the faith that I go back to the South with. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.” From a speech delivered before a joint session of the US Congress May 25, 1961.
“This will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with a new meaning, 'My country, ‘tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim’s pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring.' And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania! Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado! Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California! But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia! Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee! Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring. And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, 'Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!'” King’s speech was delivered at the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963.
8
Business Examples: (Christian Book Store) “Our vision is to see the products we sell and donate provide people with the hope of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord.” (Beckett Corporation) “Our vision is to build a family of exceptional companies – each of which serves its customers in distinctive and important ways – and each of which reflects the practical application of Biblical values throughout.” (Chick-fil-A) “ That we might glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us and to have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A.” (Henry Ford, 1903) “I will build a motor car for the multitude. It shall be large enough for the family, but small enough for the unskilled individual to operate easily and care for, and it shall be light in weight and it may be economical in maintenance. It will be built of honest materials, by the best workmen that money can hire, after the simplest designs that modern engineering can devise. But it shall be so low in price that the man of moderate means may own one and enjoy with his family the blessings of happy hours spent in God’s great open spaces.”

12
Step Two – Define a mission Statement Step Two – Define a Mission Statement The mission statement helps clarify why the organisation exists and what it does. A mission statement for a Kingdom Business has these characteristics: • It clearly defines the “work” of your business • It highlights the value you provide to customers • It is concise and engaging so that everyone in the organisation can remember and identify with it • It identifies the business as a Kingdom Business
Great Mission Statements define the “work” of your business An organisation that understands what it does best and sticks with its primary competency has less chance of wandering from the very thing its customers want and need. Define the work of your business in a way that identifies your key competency and value for the customer, not just the product or service you provide. For example, a publishing company might say: ABC Publishing Company prints and distributes books and periodicals for Christian authors. While technically correct in identifying the function of ABC Publishing, the above statement is limiting and doesn’t point to its real competency.
A
stronger statement might be:
ABC Publishing Company enables the Christian community to make disciples for Christ through innovative communications media and services. This statement better identifies ABC’s competency and elevates it above the commodity level.
13
A mission statement is also present-oriented, thus defining the business you are in today. Leaders use the mission statement to keep people and plans focused on the core business. All activities and projects should be tested against the mission statement with the question “Is this in keeping with our primary mission and does it contribute to that end?” Proposals for major new products and services beyond the scope of the mission should be questioned. Examples: Herman Miller: “We study work and living environments and design and deliver products and services that make these environments work better.” Google’s mission is “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful”.
Great Mission Statements highlight the value you provide to customers Both customers and employees should understand the value received from your organisation. The Ritz-Carlton Hotel chain exemplifies this principle: The RitzCarlton Hotel is a place where the genuine care and comfort of our guests are our highest mission. We pledge to provide the finest personal service and facilities for our guests who will always enjoy a warm, relaxed, yet refined ambience. The RitzCarlton experience enlivens the senses, instils wellbeing, and fulfils even the unexpressed wishes and needs of our guests.
Great Mission Statements are concise and engaging so that everyone in the organisation can remember and identify with it MISSION STATEMENTS Limit your mission statement to a maximum of seventy-five words. It will be easier to remember if you can use fifty words or less (better), or even twenty-
14
five words or less (best). Peter Drucker says that mission statements should fit on a T-shirt. 75 words 50 words 25 words
Good Better Best
The key is to make the mission statement engaging enough so that your employees feel a calling to the mission because it’s worthwhile. Some organisations fulfil both objectives with a shortened or “tag line” version of their mission statement, something that captures the essence of the organisation’s purpose as well as the hearts and minds of its employees. Ritz-Carlton Hotels accomplish both goals in their statement:
We are ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen! Other examples of tag lines: • Our mission is to heal. Our passion is to care! (Medical Centre) • Building homes of distinction since 1982. (Builder) • Early care and education at its best! (Daycare centre) • On your corner In your corner (Bank)
Great Mission Statements identify the business as a Kingdom Business More and more Christian-led businesses are boldly proclaiming their recognition of the sovereignty of God and their desire to be excellent stewards and servants of the business He has entrusted to them. Such statements are unique to organisations whose purpose is to honour God. We urge you to prayerfully consider such a proclamation in your mission statement.
15
Examples: “Interstate Batteries exists to glorify God as we supply our customers worldwide with top-quality, value-priced batteries, related electrical powersource products and distribution services. Furthermore, our mission is to provide our partners and Interstate Batteries System of America Inc. (IBSA) with opportunities that are profitable, rewarding and growth-oriented.” Kimray, Inc. is a manufacturer of oil and gas equipment and controls, serving producers and equipment manufacturers in the petroleum industry. “In order to effectively serve our stockholders, employees and customers, the Board of Directors is committed to: • Honouring the Lord in all we do by operating the company in a manner consistent with Biblical principles; • serving our employees and their families by establishing a work environment
and
company
policies
that
build
character,
strengthen
individuals and nurture families, and • producing a high-quality, marketable product at a fair price in order to provide a return on the stockholders’ investment, share the Lord’s blessings with our employees and invest in our community. We believe that it is by God’s grace and provision that Kimray Inc. has endured. He has been faithful in the past, and we trust Him for our future.” “Ultimate Support Systems Inc. is a Business in Ministry, which markets, designs and distributes quality support solutions while seeking to know Jesus Christ, to be like Him and to share His life and love with the world.”

Inviting Jesus into Your Life The Bible makes it clear that we have to do something to accept the gift that God offers. This is an act of faith. The Disciple John writes, “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) Believing involves an act of faith based on all that we know about Jesus. It is not blind faith. It is putting our trust in a Person. In some ways, it is like the step of faith taken by a bride and a bridegroom when they say, “I will,” on their wedding day. The key is three things: Sorry... Thank you... Please...
Sorry You have to ask God to forgive you for all the things you have done wrong and turn from everything that you know is wrong in your life. That is what the Bible means by “repentance.”
Thank you You believe that Jesus died for you on the cross. You need to thank Him for dying for you and for the offer of His free gifts of forgiveness, freedom and His Spirit.
Please God never forces His way into our lives. You need to accept His gift and invite Him to come and live within you by His Spirit. If you would like to have a
25
relationship with God and you are ready to say these three things, then here is a very simple prayer that will be the start of that relationship: Dear God I am sorry for the things I have done wrong in my life. Please forgive me. I now turn from everything that I know is wrong. Thank you that Jesus died on the cross for me so that I could be forgiven and set free. Please come into my life by Your Holy Spirit to be with me forever. Thank you, Jesus. Amen.
Now what? If you have prayed this prayer, it is important to tell someone! This may be your Group Director, a fellow member of the group, perhaps a boss or coworker who accepted this great gift of life at an earlier time. Then, find a way to get connected in a local church that loves Jesus and has a heart for the new believer.
