God’s strategy to influence Peter: Acts 10:9-22 • Five types of power ( Reward, coercion, expert, referent and legitimate) • God used a sixth type of power: Informational power

• God speaking with people- teaching, explaining, reasoning, debating, asking and answering.

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: Power and Influence

• People are most powerfully influenced when they have a clear, logical understanding of “what” and “why” without the right information, achieving the desired result is next to impossible

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: Power and Influence

Power has become a dirty word • People who have it, deny it • People who want it, do not want to appear hunger for it • People who engage in its machinations, do so secretly

The three legs of persuasion • Logic • Passion • Ethics.

Source: The three legs of persuasion by Chris Widener Leadership Principles from God’s Word: Power and Influence

Logic Logos • Your vision must make logical sense to the volunteers who are following you. • Vision. Do you have a vision of where you want to go? • If you want people to follow you, you need to have a vision, an end result that you are targeting. Leadership Principles from God’s Word: Power and Influence

Logic Logos • Clarity. Is the vision clear? • Can it be articulated clearly? • Does it make sense?

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: Power and Influence

Logic Logos • Can you communicate your vision so that it is understandable and compelling? • Do you communicate it regularly so that the logic of it sinks in? Leadership Principles from God’s Word: Power and Influence

Logic Logos • Strategy. The strategy for getting to your destination must be logical for your followers. • Does it make sense for them to follow you? • A well-thought out strategy is a must. Leadership Principles from God’s Word: Power and Influence

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: Power and Influence

Passion Pathos • Many leaders underestimate the importance of passion. • Today more than ever, passion is paramount to persuasion. • People are persuaded less by logic and reason than they are by passion

Leadership Principles from God’s Word: Power and Influence

Passion Pathos

• Are you passionate about your vision? Does that come through when you speak about it? Does it come through in your meetings? • People want to know that you are passionate about your vision. If you aren’t passionate about it, why should they be?. It takes a passionate person to move a group toward a vision. And the bigger the vision, the more passion you need to get there! Leadership Principles from God’s Word: Power and Influence

Ethics Ethos • This is the most important aspect of these three legs of persuasion. Ethics. Integrity, Character. • People will always make a decision about your character and that will affect your ability to persuade, for good or for bad. Leadership Principles from God’s Word: Power and Influence

Ethics Ethos • If your volunteers see a crack in your character, they will run for the hills. • Followers will allow for mistakes, but not for poor character. • People just do not follow unethical people very long. Leadership Principles from God’s Word: Power and Influence

Ethics Ethos • Here are some good questions to ask yourself: Am I honest? Do I do what is right? Am I responsible? Am I the same behind closed doors as I am in public? Am I a person of integrity? • Will people follow you if your character is less than stellar? Not for long. Leadership Principles from God’s Word: Power and Influence

The three legs of persuasion • Become a person with a vision that is logical and well reasoned, combine that with an intense passion, and you are well on your way to persuading people and achieving the goal for your organisation. • Rest these on the foundation of impeccable ethics and you will have all three legs of persuasion.

Learning, application and commitment: James 1: 22-25 • “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. • Do what it says. • Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in the mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. • But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it - he will be blessed in what he does.” (NIV) Leadership Principles from God’s Word: Power and Influence
