Building a KINGDOM BUSINESS Leaders need to understand how to build a Kingdom Business based upon a solid Biblical foundation. This study guide will provide the design and process for building an excellent business while fulfilling its ministry purpose. It also provides an opportunity for the leader to make a commitment to transform the existing business into a Kingdom Business.

2

Focus

1. Introduction Workshop Objectives The purpose of this study guide is to advance your knowledge and check your commitment to become a Kingdom Business by: • Learning more detail about the design for a Kingdom Business • Understanding the implementation process that is used to carry out the design • Determining your commitment to become a Kingdom Business

A Kingdom Business acknowledges the Sovereignty of God and honors Him through excellence in the operation of the business under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God.

3

In essence, the leader of a Kingdom Business believes that their business is their ministry, and that an excellent business can advance God’s Kingdom in the marketplace.

Exercise: Pause for Reflection 1. Share with each other what is on your heart about becoming a Kingdom Business. Are there any issues you must deal with personally? With your organisation?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Pray for each other as you feel led to do so.

Focus

2. Construction of a Kingdom Business As we will see, the foundational principles become the framework for the construction of a Kingdom Business. Just as with any building project, the construction of a Kingdom Business requires two basic things:

4

The Design A design provides the blueprint for the building project and includes clear specifications for materials, as well as the final product. One of the best examples of a Kingdom Building project is when King Solomon carried out the original plans of his father, King David, to build a temple for the Lord as described in I Kings 5:5:

“I intend, therefore, to build a temple for the Name of the Lord my God, as the Lord told my father David, when he said, ‘Your son whom I will put on the throne in your place will build the temple for my Name.’”

Notice how the temple begins with a design of the framework as described in I Kings 6: 2 and II Chronicles 3:3:

“The temple that King Solomon built for the Lord was sixty cubits long, twenty wide and thirty high.”

In fact, Chapters 6 and 7 in I Kings and Chapters 3 and 4 of II Chronicles are filled with immense detail on the design of the temple.

The Process The scripture about the building of the temple also reveals a construction process. The process begins when King Hiram of Tyre agrees to provide timber for the project. This is followed by a description of how the large stones were prepared in the stone quarry. The scripture further describes other processes that were essential to the construction, which include:

5

• Roofing • Flooring • Carving • Paneling • Gold plating

In this seven year building project, we see a God-honoring design that is completed through an excellent construction process. The output pleased God, as He appears to Solomon and says in I Kings 9:1:

“I have heard the prayer and plea you have made before me; I have consecrated this temple, which you have built, by putting my Name there forever. My eyes and My heart will always be there.”

Exercise: Group Discussion 1. How was your existing business designed?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6

2. What are some of the important steps that were taken to build your current business? Include facilities and equipment, customers, and employees in your consideration of important steps.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. If you could start your business again, what would you do differently? Why? Building a

Focus

2. Design of a Kingdom Business 7

If the design of the Kingdom Business is to fulfill its purpose, then it must contain the right building blocks.

Building Blocks Within the framework of the foundational principles are the following building blocks:

Building Block Applications As we examine the design of a Kingdom Business more closely, we will find a significant amount of detail within each major building block. The detail is provided in the form of applications that are necessary to complete the building block. The applications in each of the building blocks will be presented so that you will have a better idea of all that is expected of a Kingdom Business.

Leadership Applications

9

Heavy emphasis is placed upon the Leadership building block because of the expectations given to leaders in scripture. An example is found in Philippians 1:9-11:

Scripture: Philippians 1: 9-11

All of the following leadership applications are intended to fulfill the Kingdom Business expectations leaders:

Leadership Applications • Leading with Scripture and Prayer • Organising the Leadership and Focus Teams • Clarifying Vision and Mission • Measuring What’s Important • Early Win Projects • Leading as a Servant • Applying Biblical Principles to Financial Stewardship

11

• Basic Leadership Skills • Leading with Values • Developing Balanced Goals and Plans • Managing Successful Projects • Leading For Results • Managing Individual Performance Building a Kingdom Business The following is a brief description of each application to provide a deeper understanding of the requirements for leadership:

Leading with Scripture and Prayer Leaders need to understand the importance of spending time daily with God (“the Boss”) and learn how to listen to His “‘operating instructions.”

Organising the Leadership and Focus Team Just as Jesus chose His twelve, senior leaders must choose a leadership team who will help carry out the mission. The selection process must consider the unique gifts, skills and experience that are important for the role. The roles and responsibilities must be well defined. Focus area team candidates are also selected.

Clarifying the Vision and Mission of the Organisation Leaders must have clear, God-honoring vision and mission statements and must communicate them so thoroughly that the work of the organisation is aligned with them.

12

Measuring What’s Important A set of top measures is needed to drive activity in a balanced way toward the expectations for business excellence, ministry and continual improvement.

Early Win Projects Good stewards ask two questions: What should we stop doing that we are presently doing and what should we start doing that we are not doing? … in the next 30-60 days?

Leading as a Servant The most effective leaders are those who lead by example and practice Servant Leadership. Jesus told His disciples, “I came to serve and not to be served.” Are you a Servant Leader?

Applying Biblical Principles to Financial Stewardship Leaders should establish and apply financial policy and processes based on Biblical principles to practice financial stewardship.

Basic Leadership Skills Individual leaders need basic tools that include planning, prioritization, delegation, coaching, decision-making, problem-solving and communication to help them be effective and efficient in their role.

Leading with Values

13

Leaders need to identify a written set of the right values for their organisation and learn how they are used to guide, guard, and gauge behavior and performance.

Developing Balanced Goals and Plans Leaders need to develop a set of goals and plans that align with the vision and mission of the business to serve each of the focus areas in balance with each other.

Managing Successful Projects The implementation of goals and plans often require projects and leaders need skills and tools to manage a successful outcome. Leading For Results To fully engage the organisation, leaders need a process to integrate the goals, measures, and value-driven behavior expectations into everyone’s daily work. The process should also provide a development plan to enable and encourage individuals to fulfill their purpose.

Managing Individual Performance and Growth Leaders need to apply a process of continuous guidance in performance, behavior, and growth for the success of each individual in fulfilling their purpose.

Exercise: Leadership Focus Assessment 1. Complete your review of each Leadership Focus Application.

14

2. Turn to The Kingdom Business Self Assessment in the Appendix and answer the questions under Leadership Focus to assess the current state of your business.

Ministry Focus Applications The next building block to examine is the Ministry Focus. Any business can become excellent in what it does and be successful. However, the Ministry Focus distinguishes the Kingdom Business by using the business as a means to minister to the lives that it touches. In doing so, the business acts out the Great Commandment and the Great Commission to advance Gods Kingdom in the marketplace.

Ministry Focus Applications • Ministering to Employees

15

• Ministering to Partners and the Community

Ministering to Employees Leaders need to know how they can balance the demands of the workplace with the ministry needs of the workforce and reach people in a way that honors Jesus Christ.

Ministering to Partners and the Community Leaders need to develop a clear and responsible strategy for outreach to customers, suppliers, and other ministry organisations, including churches, for ministry and discipleship.

Exercise: Ministry Focus Assessment

1. Complete your review of each Ministry Focus Application.

2. Turn to The Kingdom Business Self Assessment in the Appendix and answer the questions under Ministry Focus to assess the current state of your business.

Employee Focus Applications When the topic of managing resources is presented, the main emphasis must be upon human resources. In fact, excellent businesses consider this to be one of, if not the highest, priority. The reason is that business is all about people and Christ provided the best example when He transformed ordinary people into extraordinary leaders.

16

Employee Focus Applications • Understanding Employee Satisfaction and Well-Being • Analyzing Employee Data • Developing Job Descriptions • Selecting and Placing Employees • Educating and Training Employees Building a Kingdom Business

Understanding Employee Satisfaction and Well-Being Leaders need to know how well the organisation is fulfilling the needs of employees by measuring their satisfaction and well-being.

17

Analyzing Employee Data After data on employee satisfaction and well-being has been gathered, leaders need a process to analyse the results and identify strengths and opportunities.

Developing Job Descriptions To fully enable and engage employees, leaders need to understand the principles for defining job responsibilities and expectations and develop descriptions for key positions.

Selecting and Placing Employees Part of operating any business involves the successful selection and hiring of people. Ideally each selection is successful and the individual contributes and grows in the business. Many times a hiring failure can be traced back to the way the individual was selected.

Educating and Training Employees Leaders need to define and provide excellent training and education for all who have been selected to carry out the mission of the organisation. As a result, the true potential and talent of each individual will be realized.

Exercise: Employee Focus Assessment 1. Complete your review of each Employee Focus Application.

2. Turn to The Kingdom Business Self Assessment in the Appendix and answer the questions under Employee Focus to assess the current state of your business.

18

Customer Focus Applications Serving the right customers in the right way with the right products and services are keys to bringing value to the marketplace. The result is customer loyalty and business growth, which provides a Kingdom Business the opportunity to use its resources to advance God’s Kingdom.

Customer Focus Applications • Understanding Customer Expectations • Analyzing Customer Data • Defining Marketing and Sales Plans • Keeping Customers Satisfi ed

19

Building a Kingdom Business Understanding Customer Expectations Leaders should take on the attitude of being a servant, and then deliberately work to understand and integrate the individual needs of the customers and markets into the business operation.

Analysing Customer Data After customer data have been gathered, leaders need a process to analyze the results to identify strengths that provide opportunities for business growth and improvement of products and services.

Defining Marketing and Sales Plans Serving others involves the desire to understand their needs. The next step is to defi ne a plan to connect the organisation’s services and products to those who need them. When all of this information is organised, it becomes the marketing and sales plan for the organization.

Keeping Customers Satisfied Managing customer concerns can be a powerful business tool and can show the organization’s true commitment to service. Leaders should make certain that they respond to customer concerns with the way given by Jesus in Matthew 7:12: “So whatever you wish that others would do to you do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”

Exercise: Customer Focus Assessment

20

1. Complete your review of each Customer Focus Application.

2. Turn to The Kingdom Business Self Assessment in the Appendix and answer the questions under Customer Focus to assess the current state of your business.

Operating Excellence An important expectation of a Kingdom Business is that it operates in the most effective and efficient way. Operational excellence requires the business to not only maintain waste free processes, but continually improve its operation as well. This level of stewardship requires process management tools.

21

Operational Excellence Applications • Focusing on Housekeeping and Safety • Identifying Key Processes • Defining and Measuring Key Processes • Controlling and Improving Processes • Selecting and Managing Suppliers

Focusing on Housekeeping and Safety Leaders need to establish a practice to keep the work environment clean and safe to refl ect the desire for good stewardship and care for employees.

Identifying Key Processes Every business has key processes. Identifying which ones are essential to the mission and performance of the organization is the first step to process management. For

22

example, the key processes in today’s workplace include sales, order entry, production, and delivery at a minimum. What other key processes are essential to your mission?

Defining and Measuring Key Processes It is the responsibility of the leadership to provide instructions for key processes in such a way that everyone consistently follows the instruction and measures the results to verify that the products and services meet their expectation.

Controlling and Improving Processes As good stewards, it is the responsibility of the leadership to establish controls for maintaining key processes and provide methods to improve the key processes in a way that continues to refi ne them and bring new value.

Selecting and Managing Suppliers Suppliers should be considered as partners to the business and leaders should have a process to select, maintain, and integrate their involvement into the business to enhance operational performance.

Exercise: Operational Excellence Focus Assessment 1. Complete your review of each Operational Excellence Focus Application.

2. Turn to The Kingdom Business Self Assessment in the Appendix and answer the questions under Operational Excellence Focus to assess the current state of your business.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. What are the 3-5 areas of your organisation that need the most improvement?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3.The Building Process In the beginning of this study guide, two basic things were identified to build a Kingdom Business: • Design • Process

The previous section described the design and all of the building blocks and applications within it. This section will describe the process that will carry out the design. It is called the Process for Kingdom Business Transformation.

Here are some key points about the Process for Kingdom Business Transformation: • The process follows the design for a Kingdom Business by using all the building blocks and applications within them. • The process illustrates how the building block applications are used in a logical sequence to transform the organization into a Kingdom Business. • The process is based upon a continual cycle of improvement, or restoration cycle, so that the business continues to excel and advance God’s Kingdom in the marketplace.

building block applications as a series of training study guides. These study guides are organised in a logical order for the transformation of the organization. For example:

4. The Leader’s Commitment i Business The role of spiritual leader of a business:

• Helps develop a shared vision for the business including everyone not just the owner or CEO.

• Demonstrates God’s love and mercy through Servant Leadership rather than being served.

• Is a witness rather than a preacher.

• Is not necessarily a Bible scholar, but knows God personally through prayer and regular reading and study of His Word.

29

• Practices humility and self-sacrifice.

• Prays for individuals and families.

• Models prayer - including for the business and for business decisions.

• Mentors believers in the company in the practice of regular prayer.

• Leads by example (including making some sacrifices.)

• Tells the good news of Jesus Christ to employees, vendors and customers. ’s B Today, many organisations around the world have made the commitment to operate their business as a Kingdom Business. You can also join in that commitment if you sense God’s call to do so.

You have the wonderful blessing of others who want to help you. Excellent materials have been developed and a complete process has been designed to help you through each step of your journey.

All you need to do is answer, “Is God calling you to transform your organisation into a Kingdom Business?” If so, make your commitment known by placing your name in the space provided:

If you don’t sense God’s Call to transform your business to a Kingdom Business, how may we pray for you?

Inviting Jesus Into Your Life The Bible makes it clear that we have to do something to accept the gift that God offers. This is an act of faith. The Disciple John writes, “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 Believing involves an act of faith based on all that we know about Jesus. It is not blind faith. It is putting our trust in a Person. In some ways, it is like the step of faith taken by a bride and a bridegroom when they say, “I will,” on their wedding day.

36

The key is three things: Sorry... Thank you... Please...

“Sorry” You have to ask God to forgive you for all the things you have done wrong and turn from everything that you know is wrong in your life. That is what the Bible means by “repentance.”

“Thank you” You believe that Jesus died for you on the cross. You need to thank Him for dying for you and for the offer of His free gifts of forgiveness, freedom and His Spirit.

“Please” God never forces His way into our lives. You need to accept His gift and invite Him to come and live within you by His Spirit. If you would like to have a relationship with God and you are ready to say these three things, then here is a very simple prayer you can pray that will be the start of that relationship: Dear God - I am sorry for the things I have done wrong in my life. Please forgive me. I now turn from everything that I know is wrong. Thank you that Jesus died on the cross for me so that I could be forgiven and set free. Please come into my life by Your Holy Spirit to be with me forever. Thank you, Jesus. Amen Now what? If you have prayed this prayer, it is important to tell someone! This may be your Group Director, a fellow member of the group, perhaps a boss or co-worker who accepted this great gift of life at an earlier time. Then, find a way to get connected in a local church that loves Jesus and has a heart for the new believer.

Progress Report James 1:22-25 “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it-- he will be blessed in what he does.” (NIV) Name and Number of Module ________________________________________ Participant’s Name: ________________________________________ The Biblical Truths (Principles) I learned from this module: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I intend to apply this Truth (Principle) in my business by: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------________________________
