Foundation of A KINGDOM BUSINESS Welcome to the session. In this session, we will: • Review God’s eternal perspective for business. • Define the term “Kingdom Business.” • Review foundational Scriptural principles for a Kingdom Business.

1. Introduction What brings you here today? Many Christian leaders want to model Christ, exemplify Him and glorify Him in all aspects of their lives, including business. As we begin this session, reflect on your reason for being here today. Are you here because: • You’ve taken the business as far as you can and you’re wondering, “Is it time for me to move on – to do something different?” • Your business has reached a plateau and you don’t know how to take it to the next level? • Your business is experiencing quality or service issues that you feel are not God-honoring and you want to find answers for making things better? • You just want to make the business a better place to work? • You feel God is calling you to find a higher purpose for the business with which He’s entrusted you?

I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward all of God in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:14) In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33b)

For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the worldour faith. (1John 5:4) Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will fi nd rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:2830) Exercise: Group Discussion Let’s take a few minutes to get to know the other members of the group. Please introduce yourself using the following format: • Name and Company • Briefly describe your business: o Type of business (principle products and/or services) o How long in business o Number of employees o Your role (title or position) • Family information (spouse, children) • Briefly describe your spiritual journey • What brings you here today? Why did this program seem attractive to you?

2. Kingdom Business - Work and Business From Gods Perspective God’s Eternal Perspective for Business How does God see business? Are there some long-term goals or purposes for a Christian-owned business? You’ve probably heard it said that a Christianowned business should have one unifying purpose: to glorify God. But what does that mean? First, we need to understand that work (and business) is good and should honor God. • God Himself is a worker and deemed that (legitimate) work is good. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1) And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. (Genesis 1:31a) • God gave us the privilege of sharing in His work by caring for His creation. The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. (Genesis 2:15) • Work (i.e. business) should glorify Him. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. (Colossians 3:2324)

Businesses glorify God by: • Serving in the ministry of Jesus Christ. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way,

let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.(Matthew 5:1416) Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:1920) “… the focus of the mission of a Kingdom Business is the advancement of God’s Kingdom on earth.” --Prof. Dr. Jörg Knoblauch Kingdom Companies KINGDOM BUSINESS - WORK AND • Providing for the needs of the people in the business; employees, partners, and suppliers as well as “owners.” But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. (1Timothy 5:8) Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. (James 5:4) In order to honor and glorify God, a business must be a healthy one that values and pursues excellence and continual improvement in all areas. The house that I am to build will be great, for our God is greater than all gods. (2 Chronicles 2:5) Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer derision.” (Nehemiah 2:17) Exercise: Group Discussion (God’s Eternal Purpose for Business) Briefly discuss the following questions:

1. What beliefs do you hold about God’s view of work and businesses? How do your beliefs align with those stated above?

What specific thoughts do you have about the purpose of business in serving peoples’ needs? 3. Discuss the statement that, “The central focus of the mission of a Kingdom Business is the advancement of God’s Kingdom on earth.” 4. Why is it important for a Kingdom Business to be healthy and pursue excellence?

3. The Meaning and Foundation of a Kingdom Business In Genesis 2:A Kingdom Business acknowledges the Sovereignty of God and honors Him through excellence in the operation of the business under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. Kingdom Businesses operate on a foundation of Biblical directives and principles including: Stewardship The Great Commandment The Great Commission

Kingdom Business Foundation The Kingdom Business Foundation consists of Biblical directives and principles that further define the nature and distinction of a Kingdom Business in contrast to the world’s view of business.

Let’s review these directives and principles in more detail.

Sovereignty of God • God is the sovereign creator of the universe and owns everything including our businesses. I n the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1) The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.(Psalm 24:12) • A Kingdom Business is subject to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and the advancement of His kingdom on earth. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowedon him the name that is above every name, so that atthe name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and onearth and under the earth, and every tongue onfess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:911)

Stewardship stew-ard n. (stooerd) One who manages another’s property, finances, or other affairs.

• God has given us dominion over His creation (the business). Christian business owners and leaders are called to operate as stewards of the business not owners. Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” (Genesis 1:26) The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. (Genesis 2:15)

• The Master (God) provides resources (the business and its employees, customers, products and services). The Steward (owner/CEO) is entrusted with those resources and must account for how he sustained and grew them. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy. (1 Corinthians 4:2) And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful. And that servant who knew his master’s will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating. But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, will receive a light beating. Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more. (Luke 12:4248) Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing fi ve talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made fi ve talents more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ (Matthew 25:1921) STEWARDSH IP Foundation of a Kingdom Business Exercise: Group Discussion Sovereignty of God, Stewardship Briefly discuss the following questions: 1. Why is it important for a Kingdom Business to begin with the recognition of the sovereignty of God and the Lordship of Jesus Christ?

2. What does it mean to be guided by the Holy Spirit and the final authority of God’s word in all matters of personal and business conduct? 3. How much thought have you given to the concept that God owns the business and you are the appointed “steward” of His resources? 4. To whom are you accountable in your business? Do you have a board of Directors or Council of Advisors? Do you receive Godly counsel from them? 5. What additional Scripture passages can you offer to support these principles?

Weigh-In on the Issues: (Use a scale of 1-5, with 5 being the highest) __________ To what extent do you believe and accept the Sovereignty of God over your business. __________ How ready are you to integrate this belief into your business? __________ To what extent do you believe and accept the Stewardship responsibility over your business. __________ How ready are you to integrate this belief into your business? (Transfer these numbers to the Weigh-In On the Issues Summary page at the end of the Study Guide)

Great Commandment • The Great Commandment is central to Kingdom Business stewards as we seek to honor God and to love others. And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:2831)

• Godly stewards believe in the power of prayer for guidance and intercession. Prayer is offered for and with employees, customers, suppliers and other stakeholders. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. (James 1:5) The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:5b7) Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Commandment by modeling Jesus as servant leaders. A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:3435) And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:4245) The greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. (Matthew 23:1112) The Spiritual Leader o Demonstrates God’s love and mercy through servant leadership rather than being served. o Is a witness rather than a preacher.

o Is not necessarily a Bible expert, but knows God personally through prayer and regular reading of His Word. o Practices humility and self-sacrifice. o Prays for individuals and families. o Models prayer in decision-making. o Mentors believers in the company. o Tells the Good News of Jesus Christ to employees, vendors, and customers. GREAT COMMAND M E NT GREATOMM ISSION Great Commission of a Kingdom Business • The Great Commission commands us to take the transforming message of the gospel to the marketplace and the world. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19 20) • A Kingdom Business is a ministry in its relational circle. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8) • A Kingdom Business funds ministry out of the “increase,” or profits, of the business. Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting withwine. (Proverbs 3:910)

Exercise: Group Discussion Great Commandment and Great Commission Briefly discuss the following questions: 1. How does belief in the Great Commandment distinguish a Kingdom Business from other businesses?

2. How have you used prayer previously in your business? What more do you see yourself doing? 3. How easy or difficult do you think it will be for the leaders in your business (including yourself) to become “servant leaders?” 4. In what ways can a Kingdom Business fulfill the Great Commission? 5. What ministry activities are you or your employees engaged in personally or as representatives of your business? 6. Discuss the implications of ministry within your relational circle. 7. What additional Scripture passages can you offer to support these principles? The great commission Jerusalem Judea

4. Moving from believe to Conviction : A Kingdom Business is Different As we have seen in the foundation principles, a Kingdom Business requires transformation to become and organisation where… • Choices are made with consideration for the long-term eternal purpose of the company rather than primarily focusing on short-term needs. • Decisions are made with prayer and the wise counsel of the Holy Spirit rather than with speculation and human experience. • Leaders do not view people as expendable resources but rather are concerned for the physical and spiritual welfare and growth of their people. • There is focus on continually improving products and processes to prevent problems and errors rather than reacting in a fi re-fighting mode. • Continual improvement efforts target the elimination of waste and inefficiency. • A portion of revenue is committed to furthering God’s Kingdom on earth rather than simply providing a more affl uent lifestyle for stakeholders.

Organisational Transformation Requires a Corresponding Transformation in its Leaders Leading this kind of business assumes some basic beliefs in its leaders. Check your alignment with these beliefs.

God’s invitation for you to work with Him always leads you to a crisis of belief that requires faith and action. You must make adjustments in your life to join God in what He is doing. Henry Blackaby Experiencing God True belief is more than intellectual agreement or understanding • As true believers in Jesus Christ, we seek to grow and mature.

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.(Philippians 2:1213) • We study the Word of God and we meet with other believers for prayer and discussion. And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.(Luke 18:1) Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as It is working. (James 5:16) • We seek to learn practical ways to work out our beliefs, and we act in accordance with those beliefs. S o also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. (James 2:17) • Our priorities change to come into alignment with God’s priorities. If we are growing, maturing Disciples of Christ, our growth has to lead us to a greater alignment with God’s plan and direction for our lives. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. (Philippians 3:1315) But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. (Matthew 6:33) • The resulting transformation in our behavior becomes a catalyst for change in our homes, businesses, and communities. “ But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirty fold and sixty fold and a hundredfold.” (Mark 4:20) By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. (John 15:8)

Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it-- he will be blessed in what he does.” (NIV) Name and Number of Module ________________________________________ Participant’s Name: ________________________________________ The Biblical Truths (Principles) I learned from this module: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inviting Jesus Into Your Life The Bible makes it clear that we have to do something to accept the gift that God offers. This is an act of faith. The Disciple John writes, “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 Believing involves an act of faith based on all that we know about Jesus. It is not blind faith. It is putting our trust in a Person. In some ways, it is like the step of faith taken by a bride and a bridegroom when they say, “I will,” on their wedding day. The key is three things: Sorry... Thank you... Please...

“Sorry” You have to ask God to forgive you for all the things you have done wrong and turn from everything that you know is wrong in your life. That is what the Bible means by “repentance.”

“Thank you”

You believe that Jesus died for you on the cross. You need to thank Him for dying for you and for the offer of His free gifts of forgiveness, freedom and His Spirit.

“Please” God never forces His way into our lives. You need to accept His gift and invite Him to come and live within you by His Spirit. If you would like to have a relationship with God and you are ready to say these three things, then here is a very simple prayer you can pray that will be the start of that relationship: Dear God I am sorry for the things I have done wrong in my life. Please forgive me. I now turn from everything that I know is wrong. Thank you that Jesus died on the cross for me so that I could be forgiven and set free. Please come into my life by Your Holy Spirit to be with me forever. Thank you, Jesus. Amen Now what? If you have prayed this prayer, it is important to tell someone! This may be your Group Director, a fellow member of the group, perhaps a boss or coworker who accepted this great gift of life at an earlier time. Then, find a way to get connected in a local church that loves Jesus and has a heart for the new believer.
