Prayer, the Foundation for Leading a Company for Christ Prayer is the very spiritual air we breath. It is how we commune with God. Prayer is the connection with God that gives us the power to be effective business owners and leaders of our families and in our communities. It is through prayer that our efforts each day count for eternity. Prayer is our “extension cord” to God’s powerhouse. The purpose of this course is to train us to be powerful in prayer and equip us to be effective through prayer in every aspect of our lives. Strategies for Prayer Start the day with prayer. “...in the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you.” Psalm 5:3

In a solitary place without interruption. “…very early in the morning, Jesus … went off to a solitary place where he prayed.” Mark 1:35 Read Scripture daily. Learn the mind of Christ. “Your statutes are wonderful, therefore I obey them.” Psalm 119:129 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…” Colossians 3:16 Give God Your First Fruits, Your Best. 2. To Lead effectively, Follow Christ in Prayer Leadership OVERVIEW: • Power comes from being under authority. • The believer is under the authority of Christ and draws his or her power from Christ. • We will bear much fruit as we remain under Christ’s authority. The issue is being under authority
7
“... a centurion came to him [Jesus], asking for help. ‘Lord’, he said, ‘my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering...’ Jesus said, ‘I will go and heal him.’ But the centurion answered and said, ‘Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word and my servent will be healed. For I, myself, am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go’ and he goes, and that one ‘Come’ and he comes. I say to my sevant, ‘Do this!’ and he does it. When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, ‘I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.’” Matthew 8b-10 Faith is understanding and believing the authority of Jesus “I am the true vine and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bears fruit, he prunes so that it will be more fruitful. You are already clean because of the Word which I have spoken to you. Remain in me and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself: it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” John 15: 1-8 Excellence in Business Leadership Under Christ’s Authority “I am the true vine and my Father is the gardener.” • The Son is under the Father and the Father is over all. Pruning in Christ
8
“He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bears fruit, he prunes so that it will be more fruitful. You are already clean because of the Word which I have spoken to you.” • We can expect to experience pruning. Remaining in Christ “Remain in me and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself: it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” We remain in Christ by: • Spending time with Christ every day. • Letting Him speak to us through the Scriptures and through prayer. • Asking Him to bear fruit through us. • Practicing the presence of Christ all day, every day. Effectiveness in Christ “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” • We can do nothing of significance for the Kingdom without Christ. • A daily prayer time is crucial for effectiveness. Lack of Power “If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fi re and burned.” • Not abiding (remaining) in Christ results in not being used. Power in Abiding “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you.” • True power comes from abiding in Christ, being under His authority and experiencing His power.
9
Fruit-Bearing “This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” • The end result is accomplishment (fruit bearing) that brings God glory and shows we are Christ’s disciples. Therefore: • Place yourself under Christ’s authority and remain there. • Spend time with Christ every day to remain (abide) in Him. • Let Him speak to you through the Scriptures and prayer. This takes time. There is no shortcut. • Ask Him to bear fruit through you. • Experience His power working through you to further the Kingdom and bring glory to God. 3. Follow the Model of Christ, in Prayer Leadership OVERVIEW: We Are to Follow the Ways of Jesus in Prayer: • Spend much time alone with the Father in prayer as a lifestyle. • Do only what we see God doing or what he has commanded. • Spend significant time in prayer before any major decision. Jesus Modeled Prayer for us: • Jesus spent much time in prayer. • Jesus prayed alone with the Father. • Jesus did only what he saw the Father do. • Jesus spent significant time in prayer before a major decision. Jesus spent much time in prayer All night in prayer “One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray and spent the night praying to God.” Luke 6:12 About 9 hours one night in prayer 12
“After he had dismissed them [the crowd], he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone. During the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.” Matthew 14:22-25 [The fourth watch was about 3 – 6 AM.] Jesus prayed alone with the Father “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place where he prayed.” Mark 1:35 “At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them.” Luke 4:42 Excellence in Business Leadership Jesus taught us to pray alone with the Father. “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray o your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matthew 6:5-6 Jesus did only what He saw the Father doing. “Jesus gave them this answer: ‘I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can only do what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does, the Son also does.” John 5:10 “By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgement is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.” John 5:30 Jesus did only what the Father commanded. “So Jesus said, ‘When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am the one I claim to be and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me’. ” John 8:28
13
“For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it.” John 12:49 We can do nothing without Jesus. “I am the vine; you are the branches/ If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.“ John 15:5 • We must seek Jesus to do the work through us. Prayer, the Foundation for Leading a Company for Christ Jesus spent significant time in prayer before a major decision. “One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles.” Luke 6:12-13 We are to follow the ways of Jesus in prayer: • Spend much time in prayer as a lifestyle. • Be alone with the Father in prayer. • Do only what we see the Father doing or what He has commanded. Other models of prayer • The disciples made prayer a priority. “We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.” Acts 6:3b-4 . Application: If Jesus, the Son of God, had to spend significant time in prayer, can we, who have been called to run our companies for Christ, lead small groups, or serve Christ otherwise, do any less? Study Scripture to be equipped to lead the company for Christ. “All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16 Pray the Scriptures. • Pray selected verses back to God, claiming His promises. Be Strategic in Prayer Make prayer the center point of your relationship with God. Give God a substantial offering –your full attention. • Not while driving to work. Give God the first fruits – pray early in the day. “In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice, in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.” Psalm 5:3 Make your time with God the most important and significant time of your day. Spend lots of time in prayer – it’s the most important time you will spend on the company that day. If you are not spending at least 1/2 hour per day in prayer, you have not come to grips with the fact that Christ owns the business. Prayer,

Progress Report Application & Commitment James 1:22-25 “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it-- he will be blessed in what he does.” (NIV)
