Second to Third Year Options 2021-2022
Second to Third Year Options All students (whether currently at King Edward’s or new applicants) entering into the Third Year (Year 9) are asked to make choices about the range of subjects that they will study. All pupils study, or continue to study,

the subjects below:
All pupils study at least two languages in the Third Year.
ENGLISH
Current pupils will continue to study their Modern Foreign Language 1, that being the language first started in the First Year. For their Modern Foreign Language 2 they have the option to continue to study their current Modern Foreign Language 2, i.e. the language started at the beginning of the Second Year, or switch to Italian or Latin.
HISTORY MATHEMATICS GEOGRAPHY BIOLOGY RELIGIOUS STUDIES CHEMISTRY PHYSICAL EDUCATION & GAMES PHYSICS We then ask pupils to choose a further five subjects to study alongside the mandatory ones listed above. This can be either
Two languages + 3 option subjects or
Three languages + 2 option subjects
Pupils joining the school next year must pick two languages from French, German, Spanish, or Italian. It is expected that one language will have been studied for at least two years, and that the other will have been studied for at least one year – unless opting for Italian which is taught as a beginners language. It is possible to study three languages, in which case one will be Latin. If you decide on two languages, you can add any three subjects from the list below, whilst if you decide on three languages, you can add two subjects from the list below: Art*, Design Technology*, Music*, Drama*, Computer Science, or Classical Civilisation. Please note that whether choosing two or three subjects from this list, at least one must be a creative subject, marked *.

Thinking Ahead to GCSE Options Please note that it will not be possible to begin a new additional language at the beginning of the Fourth Year. It is preferable, but not essential, for those intending to take Design Technology, Drama, Music, Art, Classical Civilisation, or Computer Science at GCSE to study the subject in the Third Year. You will be making more wide-ranging option choices next year, before entering the Fourth Year (Year 10). However, you will be able to make more important decisions about your languages. If in twelve months’ time you decide you want to take only one modern language to GCSE, you will only be able to choose a language that you have studied in the Third Year.
For students joining King Edward VI School in the Third Year: - Although two languages must be studied in the Third Year, only one needs to be taken through to GCSE. This decision is made in twelve months’ time. - If you have only studied one language in your current school you must pick that and Italian. - Should you need any advice regarding language options please do not hesitate to contact Mr A J Sinclair (Head of Languages) ajms@kes.hants.sch.uk
For current Second Year King Edward VI School students: All pupils must study at least one modern European Language at GCSE, which will have been studied during the Third Year. - If you do carry on with your second modern language or Latin, or you take up Italian as a new language in the Third Year, you don’t have to follow it right through to IGCSE – you make the decision whether to carry on with it in twelve months’ time. - If you wish to take other non-language subjects at GCSE in the Fourth Year it is preferable to take it as an option subject in the Third Year, although not essential. Deputy Head (Academic): Dr B M Waymark bmw@kes.hants.sch.uk
- Take lots of advice – from your tutor, your teachers, heads of department, Mrs Burnett or Dr Waymark. Visit the Guidance Centre and talk to the careers team. Although every effort will be made to match everyone’s choices, unfortunately it is impossible to guarantee that you will be given all your preferences. Various timetabling pressures mean that a few people may be unable to do their preferred combination, which is why we ask you to list alternatives.
