King Edward VI School

End of Term Bulletin 10 July, 2015

O

ver the past fortnight we have had a huge array of activities including an excellent Arts Festival which included an innovative Art Exhibition using the Big Top, a host of university open day visits, work experience placements, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and preparation for the Fourth Year students as they consider their Sixth Form options. Sports Day and the Swimming Gala both proved to be very competitive occasions and, as ever, the Allen Grant Inter-House competition has been fiercely contested! A wide range of visits and events organised for Endeavour occupied the penultimate week with much of this recorded in more detail in the latest issue of Konnections. Many parents also enjoyed the splendid biennial ball organised by the tireless KES PTA. Over the summer many students will be involved in activities abroad and in the UK including the Summer Camp in Swanage, the Geogedacht team in South Africa, an expedition to the Himalayas, a Rugby and Hockey tour of South Africa and the watersports holiday in France, as well as further Duke of Edinburgh expeditions. Our thanks go to all of the staff involved in those trips – they will be giving up a lot of their holiday to make them work so smoothly. We thank Mrs Thomas, Deputy Head (Pastoral), Mr Kay, Miss Stenning, Mrs Coker, Mr Reece and Dr Berryman for all they have done for the School and wish them well in their new roles or retirement. The names of the staff replacing them may be found on page two of this publication. I wish you all a good break over the summer.

Mindfulness Training

Normandy 2016 The next payment will be due at the start of the autumn term

Annie Davison, our School Counsellor, is a qualified Mindfulness Teacher for Teens. Mindfulness is training in concentration and self-awareness which can help young people respond better to the demands of performing well at school and with interactions with their peer group and family. Students who have participated in this training have said it has helped them, not only with stress, anxiety and relationships but also with concentration and sleep problems. Next term Annie will be running a Mindfulness Course, which will be open to students of all age groups. You can find more about it by clicking here to access details from the School website. More information about the specific course can be found at www.mindfulnessinschools.org.

Montpellier 2016 The Sixth Form Language trip to Montpellier will be launched at the start of term. The dates are Sunday 10 April to Friday 15 April which is during the Easter Break. Students will attend 3 hours of intensive classes with native French teachers in the mornings and take part in a range of activities in the afternoon. They will stay with host families. This proved hugely successful last year and it is recommended that AS and A2 students sign up.

If you, as parents, are interested in learning more about Mindfulness, then please contact Annie on ad@kes.hants.sch.uk.

School duties are also carried out by our Prepositors and Heads of House together with the Lower School Prefects. They have all worked very effectively with a varied range of responsibilities and opportunities to develop their team work and leadership skills.
