King Edward VI School Southampton
Carol Service St Mary’s Church Southampton Monday 15th December, 2014 7.30pm
‘Peace on Earth, goodwill to men, from Heav’n’s all gracious King!’ Our service begins in the darkness of Advent; reminding us of our great need of God. In Jesus he comes to us, making known His love for the errant world; the grace of that love seen in the vulnerable child, the intensity of that love found on the Cross, its power in the Resurrection. Christmas, then, is fulfilled at Easter. This year we have witnessed many examples of human failure to live up to the ideal Jesus has set for us. War, violence and terrorism, intolerance, inequality and injustice remain dominating features of our world, a constant darkness in what should be a joyful and bountiful world. The awesome destructive power of Nature has reminded us how fragile all life is on our planet, how precious each person is, how urgent it is we attend to our care of each other and of the Earth. Yet, amongst the failure we see God working, in the love we know, kindnesses and selfless giving that we encounter, daily, in our relationships and neighbours. At Christmas God's rule in our hearts started to be a reality in a new and irreversible way through Jesus. We are all called to make it tangible and evident in the world we order. The radical message of Christmas, of God made man, heralds the beginning of the New Kingdom of God, where Heaven and Earth have come together. The challenge for each of us every day and every year is to make it more than an aspiration. Julian Poppleton School Chaplain
CANDLES Please be ready to light your candle in the final hymn and pass the flame on. Do keep it lit for the blessing and carry the light out into the world as a symbol of Christ’s coming and our continuing mission. Any left behind will be used in churches attended by our students. AT THE END OF THE SERVICE Do join us for seasonal refreshments. May we ask that the congregation remain seated until directed by the stewards. This is to allow safe movement, the extinguishing of candles and the clearing of some chairs so that the refreshments can be enjoyed by everyone. We are very fortunate to have George Castle, Assistant Director of Music at Winchester Cathedral, playing for tonight’s service. Music before the Service: Nun komm der Heiden Heiland BWV 659 Les enfants de Dieu Es is ein Ros’ entsprungen

O sisters too, how may we do For to preserve this day? This poor youngling, for whom we sing By by, lully lullay.
That woe is me, poor child for thee! And ever morn and day, For thy parting neither say nor sing By by, lully lullay.
CONGREGATIONAL CAROL Hark the herald angels sing, Glory to the new born King; Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled: Joyful all ye nations rise, Join the triumph of the skies, With th’ angelic host proclaim Christ is born in Bethlehem. Hark! The herald angels sing, Glory to the new born King.
Christ, by highest heav’n adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord, Late in time behold him come Offspring of a Virgin’s womb: Veiled in flesh the Godhead see, Hail the incarnate Deity! Pleased as man with man to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel. Hark! The herald angels sing, Glory to the new born King.
Hail the heav’n born Prince of Peace! Hail the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all he brings, Risen with healing in his wings; Mild he lays his glory by, Born that man no more may die, Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth. Hark! CONGREGATIONAL CAROL Solo
Angus Armstrong
Once in Royal David’s city Stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her Baby In a manger for His bed: Mary was that Mother mild, Jesus Christ her little Child. Choir
He came down to earth from Heaven Who is God and Lord of all, And His shelter was a stable, And His cradle was a stall: With the poor, and mean, and lowly, Lived on earth our Saviour holy.
All
And our eyes at last shall see Him, Through His own redeeming love, For that Child so dear and gentle; Is our Lord in heaven above: And He leads His children on To the place where He is gone. Not in that poor lowly stable, With the oxen standing by, We shall see Him; but in heaven, Set at God’s right hand on high; Where like stars his children crowned All in white shall wait around.

The Colours Of Christmas
John Rutter
The First Year Choir
Blue for the robe of his mother so mild, Gold for the precious gifts they brought to the child; Silver the starlight to shine through your sleep, And a rainbow for all the sweet dreams you will keep. These are the colours of Christmas: Let them shine all over the earth.
GOOD NEWS FOR ALL PEOPLE READING
Luke 2. 8-20 A Babe is Born read by Daniel Stephens, Head of Reynolds
CONGREGATIONAL CAROL It came upon the midnight clear, That glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth To touch their harps of gold: ‘Peace on the earth, goodwill to men, From heav’n’s all gracious king!’ The world in solemn stillness lay To hear the angels sing. Still through the cloven skies they come, With peaceful wings unfurled; And still their heav’nly music floats O’er all the weary world; Above its sad and lowly plains They bend on hov’ring wing; And ever o’er its Babel sounds The blessed angels sing. Yet with the woes of sin and strife The world has suffered long; Beneath the angel strain have rolled Two thousand years of wrong; And man, at war with man, hears not The love song which they bring: O hush the noise, ye men of strife, And hear the angels sing.
MARY BORE SWEET JESUS CHRIST READING
A Dissenter’s Hail Mary James Badcock read by Tabitha Piggott, Head of Capon You bore him, fed him, clothed him, led him, You carried him, suckled him, sang him to sleep. You nursed him, enfolded him, encouraged him, Scolded him, you suffered him, Moved him to laugh (and to weep). You were the chosen one, you were the maiden. He was yours before he was ours. With your flesh the Word was laden, Seed of eternity, Hope of the years. For your obedience, your faith and your firmness, For your humility, tenderness, grace, Sinners salute you, presume to say ‘Thank you’, who love him and serve him, But had not your place.

Away in a Manger
The Choir
Rejoice, O mother of God. Virgin Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, for thou hast borne the Saviour of our souls.
Traditional arr. David Willcocks
Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky, looked down where he lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes. I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky, And stay by my side until morning is nigh. Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay Close by me for ever, and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care, And fit us for heaven, to live with thee there.

Silent Night

Anna Cooke
Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht, Alles schläft; einsam wacht Nur das traute hochheilige Paar. Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar, Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh! Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!
Silent night, holy night All is sleeping, alone watches Only the close, most holy couple. Blessed boy in curly hair, Sleep in heavenly peace! Sleep in heavenly peace!
Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht, Gottes Sohn, o wie lacht Lieb' aus deinem göttlichen Mund, Da uns schlägt die rettende Stund' Christ, in deiner Geburt! Christ, in deiner Geburt!
Silent night, holy night, Son of God, oh how laughs Love out of your divine mouth, Because now the hour of salvation strikes for us. Christ, in Thy birth!
CONGREGATIONAL CAROL God rest ye merry gentlemen, let nothing you dismay, For Jesus Christ our Saviour was born on Christmas day, To save us all from Satan's power when we were gone astray: O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy. The shepherds at those tidings rejoicèd much in mind, And left their flocks a-feeding in tempest, storm and wind: And went to Bethlehem straightway this Blessed Babe to find: But when to Bethlehem they came whereat this infant lay, They found Him in a manger, where oxen feed on hay; His mother Mary kneeling, unto the Lord did pray: Now to the Lord sing praises, all you within this place, And with true love and brotherhood each other now embrace; This holy tide of Christmas all other doth efface:

Masters In This Hall
Traditional arr. David Willcocks
The Choir
Masters in this hall, hear ye news today Brought from over sea, and ever I you pray: Nowell! Nowell! Nowell! Nowell sing we clear! Holpen are all folk on earth, born is God’s Son so dear: Nowell! Nowell! Nowell! Nowell sing we loud! God today hath poor folk raised and cast a-down the proud. Going o’er the hills, through the milk-white snow, Heard I ewes bleat while the wind did blow: Shepherds many and one sat among the sheep, No man spake more word than they had been asleep: ‘How name ye this lord, Shepherds? then said I, ‘Very God,’ they said, ‘Come from heaven high’; This is Christ the Lord, Masters, be ye glad! Christmas is come in, and no folk should be sad:
CONGREGATIONAL CAROL O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting light; The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.
O morning stars, together Proclaim the holy birth, And praises sing to God the King, And peace to men on earth; For Christ is born of Mary; And, gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wondering love.
How silently, how silently, The wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming; But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive him, still The dear Christ enters in.
O holy Child of Bethlehem, Descend to us, we pray: Cast out our sin and enter in, Be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell: O come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Emmanuel.

‘Nova! Nova!’
Bob Chilcott
The Chamber Choir
Nova! Nova! ‘Ave’ fit ex ‘Eva’. Gabriel of high degree, He came down from Trinity, To Nazareth in Galilee, Nova! Nova! ‘Ave’ fit ex ‘Eva’. He met a maiden in a place, He kneeled down afore her face. He said, ‘Hail, Mary, full of grace!’ When the maid heard tell of this she was full sore abashed I-wys, and wened that she had done amiss. Then said the angel, ‘Dread not you, You shall conceive in all vertue A Child whose name shall be Jesu.’ ‘It is not yet six months agone Since Elizabeth conceived John, as it was prophesied before.’ Then said the maiden verily: ‘I am your servant right truly, Ecce ancilla Domini.’

The Call George Herbert read by Ben Dunford, Head of Lake
Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life; Such a Way as gives us breath, Such a Truth as ends all strife, Such a Life as killeth death.
Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength; Such a Light as shows a Feast, Such a Feast as mends in length, Such a Strength as makes his guest.
Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart; Such a Joy as none can move, Such a Love as none can part, Such a Heart as joys in love.
HOPE DOES NOT DECEIVE CONGREGATIONAL CAROL The first Nowell the angel did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay, keeping their sheep, On a cold winter’s night that was so deep: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel. They looked up and saw a star, Shining in the east, beyond them far: And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night: This star drew nigh to the north-west; O’er Bethlehem it took its rest, And there it did both stop and stay Right over the place where Jesus lay: Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heavenly Lord, That hath made heaven and earth of naught, And with his blood mankind hath bought:
READING
Love received and love given Thomas Merton read by Emma Falconer, Head of School The times are difficult. They call for courage and faith. Faith is in the end a lonely virtue. Lonely especially where a deeply authentic community of love is not an accomplished fact, but a job to be begun over and over, as in all Christian communities in general. Love is not something we get from Mother Church as a child gets milk from the breast; it also has to be given. We don't get any love if we don't give any. Christmas is not then just a sweet regression to breast feeding and infancy. It is a serious and sometimes difficult feast. Difficult especially if for psychological reasons we fail to grasp the indestructible kernel of hope that is in it. If we are just looking for a little consolation we may be disappointed. Let us pray for one another, love one another in truth, in the sobriety of earnest Christian hope, for hope, says Paul, does not deceive.
CAROL
The Sans Day Carol Traditional Cornish Carol arr. John Rutter The Choir Now the holly bears a berry as white as milk, And Mary bore Jesus who was wrapped up in silk: And Mary bore Jesus Christ our Saviour for to be, And the first tree in the greenwood, it was the holly, holly, holly! And the first tree in the greenwood, it was the holly! Now the holly bears a berry as green as the grass, And Mary bore Jesus, who died on the Cross: Now the holly bears a berry as black as the coal, And Mary bore Jesus, who died for us all: Now the holly bears a berry as blood is it red, Then trust we our Saviour, who rose from the dead:
CONGREGATIONAL CAROL O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem, Come and behold Him, born the King of Angels; O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord. God of God, Light of Light, Lo, He abhors not the Virgin’s womb; Very God, begotten not created: Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation, Sing all ye citizens of heaven above; Glory to God in the highest: BLESSING VOLUNTARY
