July 2013 Pt 1 – Student day
Pt 2 – Parent presentation - Intro – Mr N ick Culver - The curriculum – Mr Adrian Dellar - Co-curricular in the Sixth Form – Ms Hilary Smith - Higher Education – Ms Ruth Greenwood
The Challenges ahead • A higher education market in flux • Increased grade anxiety – grade deflation and the importance of ABB • Tougher, more selective graduate employment market, despite recent improvements • Economic uncertainty for state funded Colleges, Universities, public sector employers
Higher Education is becoming more complex • Competition between universities is fragmenting the system; Sixth Formers will need dedicated expertise to navigate the entry process “Birmingham to convert CFdchoices to unconditional” Cambridge Economics faculty: “the advice on the University website which discourages applicants from offering Business Studies does not apply to Economics applicants” Although GCSE grades are generally more important for Oxford, and UMS scores more so for d Cambridge, there are differences within subjects and within individual Colleges
Small sets and tutor groups, but big opportunities Co-curricular opportunities, Foundation Studies and PSHE are based around the skills and aptitudes that employers seek and that we believe will give students the confidence and desire to succeed as young adults once they leave the School Decision making

Higher Education and What Happens@ KES?
The school website provides you with a complete guide to the Higher Education preparation process as well as useful links and presentations
We have a section for Parents as well as a section of Student Resources
Not ever intended as positive PR for HMC schools, the Sutton Trust Report
listed us as 30th in the entire UK for our success in placing students in ‘highly selective’ universities
What students need to Know……. • Not all Universities are ‘equal’ • Not all university courses have the same employment rate • Not all universities have the same ‘student satisfaction’ level • Not all Sixth Form statistics are presented as percentages!
Our students are taught to use the information available to make sensible decisions E.G: Percentage of students in full time graduate employment within six months of leaving university. There are often anomalies that need thinking through. For instance, Imperial has a higher graduate employment rate than Cambridge in this table – but Imperial has specialised science courses and a significant % of Cambridge graduates go into research. Ms Truss's findings show that 15% of comprehensive school pupils and 11% of sixth-form college pupils were entered for at least three "facilitating" Alevels in 2010, compared with 31% at independent schools
So, Why Higher Education preparation in our VI Form? Small is beautiful – and impressively successful. Students will be in a tutor group with a maximum of just 6 students applying for University with the help of a personal tutor. A ratio of 1:6 is unlikely to be bettered anywhere with a comparable number of students proceeding to university.
In addition, once part of the VI form HE system, students stay part of it until they move to university. Our students are supported through their applications even if they opt to take a year out – GAP year in Tibet? No problem: we’ve done it before!
Statistics • If you’re trying to make decisions [For University or for VI Form] always try to get answers in %. • These are our recent statistics and we’re very proud of them!

We generally quote 10 -11% as an average figure for our statistics for Oxbridge, but in fact, over the past 6 years we’ve averaged a rate of 13%. These figures are for applicant year groups, which is only fair. If we looked just at UVI figures the statistics can change quite dramatically. In 2010, for instance, 19% of those applicants then in the UVI subsequently proceeded to either Oxford or Cambridge; last year 17%
In a VI form college of 2,000 [ assuming approximately 1,000 per year group], that would mean anything between 100 -190 students would be proceeding to Oxbridge every year over a period of years to match our figures. BUT - Ultimately this is just one piece of the bigger picture and simply a convenient way of comparing statistics. We firmly believe that VI Form Education is a whole lot more than just HE success.
