Fortnightly time-tabled PSHE lesson with tutors. Time also available during the extended Wednesday morning tutor time. Programme enhanced by a collapsed timetable day. Designed to complement the Junior Science curriculum and Extended Studies Programme.
Autumn term: ground rules, anxieties, study skills, appropriate internet and technology use, organisation, menstruation (girls with nursing staff). Spring term: bullying, internet safety, self esteem, friendships, personal hygiene (with nursing staff). Summer term: exam preparation, internet safety, team building/ project activities, PSHE Day.

The Junior Science curriculum addresses several topics that relate to PSHE themes. Lessons on specialised cells and tissues and organs help to form an understanding of health and there is a series of lessons on puberty and reproductive systems. The Extended Studies programme looks at well-being, physicality, culture, philosophy, creativity and confidence. This is achieved via topics on food, first aid and an introduction to mindfulness, dance, castles, reality and representation, equality and diversity (LGBTQ+, religious tolerance, racism and sexism)and a Mission to Mars project (computer programming and communication skills). Early in the Autumn Term there is a first year assembly about online safety and iPad use and one Extended Studies Session is used to mark Safer Internet Day. In addition to the PSHE programme, Nursing staff cover menstruation (girls only) and personal hygiene with pupils in small groups and early in the Autumn Term, pastoral heads run a “Transition Day” on healthy relationships with the following aims: Encourage healthy relationships between students Discourage cliques forming Train students to recognise harmful situations and react in a constructive fashion Introduce good practice for mental health Reinforce all aspects of cyber safety Help students to organise themselves.

Careers option talks given to both 2nd and 3rd Year pupils before option choices. 3rd Year pupils take Fast Tomato careers profiling test. Upper School Pupils introduced to Career Department facilities on tutor group basis. All 4 th Year pupils take Morrisby Careers Profiling Test and receive individual feedback and they attend a Careers Fair in the summer term. Every 5th Year pupil receives individual careers interview. 6th Form Students work with tutors/ Careers Department/ Director of Student Guidance as University applications and future careers considered. Work experience placements are organised for those pupils who wish to have them. UCAS sessions and Personal Statement preparation as well as an introduction to gap years and practice job interviews are undertaken during FS in the LVI Year. Advice with personal statements, gap years, University Interviews and UCAS applications is ongoing throughout the LVI and UVI Years and advice and input is tailored to individual students. In the Spring Term there is an evening HE Fayre for LVI students where a large number of Universities are represented and in the Summer Term there is an evening Careers Fair, a LVI FS session on job interviews (followed by the individual practice interviews) and then a collapsed timetable careers day (covering networking).

Wednesday morning PSHE sessions cover various topics such as the benefits of sleep, how to manage strong feelings, assertiveness, making decisions, bullying, esafety, social networking, relationships, learning disabilities and autism, challenging stereotypes, time management, same sex relationships, smoking, binge drinking, mental health, resilience, sun safety and healthy eating. 3rd Year Biology lessons cover several topics – nutrition and digestion, respiration and smoking.
4th Year PSHE Day – 5 sessions: LGBTQ+, contraception, STIs, leadership and teamwork, internet safety and sexting Talks to the whole year group on alcohol and drugs 4th Year Biology covers several topics - blood clotting preventing blood loss and infection, heart rate and exercise, the role of the skin in temperature regulation, the roles and effects of various hormones, human reproduction. 5th Year Drop in sessions on managing exam stress Talk by Alex Fryer about contraception, sexual identity, consent, pornography, peer pressure and delaying intercourse. 5th Year Biology covers several topics – microorganisms and disease, inheritance and genetics.
LVI Talks (Extended sessions on LVI PSHE Day) to whole year group on drugs and Mental Health. PSHE FS sessions cover HIV/ AIDS, avoiding street violence, domestic abuse and diversity. UVI Talk addressing sexual behaviour, consent and relationships within the contexts of foreign travel and ‘Fresher’s’ week’ and the university environment. The .b Mindfulness course is offered in UVI FS. All students Students can choose to sign up for the .b mindfulness course after school. Parent Talks Evening talks to parents about understanding your child’s behaviour (separate talks for boys and girls). Understanding your child’s temperament, mindfulness, how to survive and enjoy your child’s teenage years and teenage mental health are covered as part of the “Life with a Teenager Evening” which is run every 2 years. There are talks each year to parents about the misuse of drugs and internet safety .
