No bus or train available. Distance from school. Quickest way from home. Because I drop my children off for school on my way. Need car at end of day to pick up son I do not cycle in the dark / winter

Too much to carry.

Car either alone or share but due to pick up of child need to dash off asap and try to combine chores such as supermarket shop pre or post school en-route. If i lived close enough i would walk. I like the train journey but the walk to school this end in the wet weather is not appealing and the cost of the train is more than running a car.

4. Is there any aspect of your journey that you find difficult, dangerous or unpleasant please fill in the following table: Getting out of Southampton always slow especially on the a35/Milbrook flyover - not helped by queues for the 271 which more often than not causes conjestion and blocks two lanes of traffic. The reverse actually, I find it quite relaxing. Sitting in traffic - and the knowledge that I am spending money and burning polluting fuel. Sometimes the gate desn't open automatically as I leave the site (it used to) and then I end up trying to find my card at the bottom of my bag (my fault really I shold just be organised and have the card easy to access!) A car gets me to my childrens childcare on time as no other transport would. The car is warm, comfortable, and infused with my own choice of music. I can shave on the way to work (cordless, bit by bit at every red light) thus saving time at home. All these as well as the amount to carry make it much more convenient than alternatives.

Speed of traffic on Hill Lane. Proximity of cars to the pavement. Occasionally, the exteeme danger posed by cars driving OVER the edge of the pavement. Why not use the urban equivalent of dragons' teeth along the edge of pavements as is done in mainland european cities? Getting stuck in rush hour traffic on the M27 Too much traffic! If there is an accident/roadworks everything comes to a standstill Traffic congestion in Archers Road, particularly after heavy rainfall. Earlier this term it was taking nearly 30 minutes to get from the Avenue to Hill Lane by car. Buses stoipping at the bus stop at the top of Hill Lane cause a lot of traffic congestion around the roundabouts on Winchester Road dreadful road surfaces for cyclists and need to share very busy roads with heavy traffic flow

5. If you do already walk or cycle, or wish to start, is there anything that would help make your journey easier or safer? For example, Improved street lighting. More cycle paths. Lockers to store things in a changing area. Improved cycle path on Winchester Road. Wider footpath down the eastern side of Hill Lane. Lighting through the main morth-south path on the Common. A cycle track on Hill Lane Improved road surface on Hill Lane and improved pedestrian crossings. Greater cycle storage and chan ging facilities. New + more cycle racks (bikes are damaged when full). Storage for clothes/towels etc. Improved changing facilities. cycle storage for cycles with disc brakes. Improved shower facility would enable more cycling and less train aspect. Less to carry. I live 10 miles away and am a) too nervous to cycle that distance on major roads and b) need to look smart at work and would arrive with squashed hair and all sweaty! I would have to allow about three times as long for the journey plus showering etc. Cycle route from the forest into southampton

6 .If you use a bike to get to school was it purchased through the “Bike to Work Scheme

7. Are there any other comments you would like to make about the things that influence the way you travel to school? There is only one bus in the morning (U9 at 7.45) and one bus in the evening (4.15). Both are overcrowded. The fare is more than my petrol costs. Q3 would not allow me to fill in multiple reasons. There have been marked improvements to cycle paths and lanes between c/ford and Southampton in the last 2 yearswhich is very good news. I would consider car share if I didn't have the children to drop off every morning but it is just not a viable option for me. A cycle way down Hill Lane is long over due. Traffic on Hill Lane travels in excess of 30mph. Speed bumps, please.
