A guide to Socrative What is Socrative? Socrative is a free classroom response tool which works on any internet enabled device or via the iOS/Android app. It allows you to send multiple choice, true or false or short answer questions on the fly to your students as well as make your own quizzes, share them with others and have them marked for you too.

What can I use Socrative for?  To revise vocabulary  To check comprehension  To facilitate formative assessment in all four skills How to sign up for a Socrative Teacher account Go to www.socrative.com and click on the “Sign Up” icon or tap the App Store app on your iPad and search for Socrative Teacher. Tap the Free button to install. You will need to put in your iTunes password when prompted. Tap Create account.


Fill in your details and click Continue. Read the instructions and click Next until you reach the main screen.

This is the main screen. You’ll see you’ve been given a Room Number which you need to give to the students before you can start sending them different exercise types. Mine is 29701.


Getting started Ask your students to install the Socrative Student app from the App Store and ask them to enter your Room number on their opening screen then tap Join Room.

They will then see this screen and in the Teacher App, you tap one of the Single Question Activitiesfor questions on the fly or Quiz-Based Activities where the results can be displayed in a spreadsheet.

Creating a Multiple Choice activity In the Teacher app, tap Multiple Choice.


In the Student app, tap one of the answers A to E.

In the Teacher app, you can see the result is displayed along with the number of users. Tap End Activity to return to the main screen.


Creating a True/False Activity In the Teacher app, tap True/False.

In the Student app, tap True or False.

As before, the result is displayed in the Teacher app. Tap End Activity to return to the main screen.


Creating a Short Answer Activity In the Teacher app, tap Short Answer.

In the Student app, type in your answer in the Submit response box and tap Submit.

Creating a Quiz-Based Activity In the Teacher app in the main screen, tap Manage Quizzes

Tap Create a Quiz


Give your Quiz a name and decide if you want to make it shareable so others can import your quiz into their own Teacher app.

Tap either Multiple Choice or Short Answer for your first question. In the example below, I’ve chosen Multiple Choice and I’ve put a tick in the box next to the correct answer. You can also add an explanation for the correct answer too.


To make a Short Answer, tap Short Answer. You can also use the arrow keys to change the order of the questions in your activity or delete the question by clicking on the delete icon. When you’ve finished creating your quiz, tap Save.

Tap the Main screen.


Tap Start Quiz.

Select your quiz from the dropdown menu and tap Student-Paced or Teacher Paced Quiz. There are also some Advanced Quiz Options to choose too.

In the Student app, enter your name and tap Submit.


In the Teacher app, tap Send Next Question to Students.

In the Student app, tap the correct answer and Done.

In the Teacher app, the result is displayed. Tap Send Next Question to Students.


In the Student app, write in your answer and tap Finish.

In the Teacher app, tap End Activity. You can also tap Hide Live Results if you think this will effect what students write as their answers.

Tap Email Report if you want a spreadsheet showing who entered the correct or incorrect answers. Otherwise, tap No Report.

Here is the spreadsheet generated in this example. Correct answers for multiple choice questions are highlighted in green and incorrect ones in red.


Creating a Space Race activity. In the Teacher app, in the main screen, tap Space Race.

Select the activity from the dropdown menu, the number of teams and whether you want to assign colors or not. Tap Next.

In the Student app, choose a team by tapping a colour.


In the Teacher app, tap Start Space Race.

In the Student app, enter your name and tap Submit..

Tap the correct answer and Next question.


In the Teacher app, the result is displayed. With multiple teams there is a sense of competition. Tap End Activity to finish and Email Report if required.
