SIDESPLITTERS These jokes may not be polite, but they sure are funny. Be warned.

ABOUT THE SERIES

What do you call a fairy who hasn’t washed? Stinkerbell. Cover not available

IT’S A GAS by the Editors at Kingfisher

This hilarious series features hundreds of family-friendly jokes collected thematically with entertaining illustrations on every page and an affordable price that makes them perfect for party favors, stocking stuffers, and fun on the go.

How many farts does it take to make a stink bomb? A phew. Everyone knows that for children of a certain age, nothing is funnier than a fart joke. And to that end, the Editors at Kingfisher realized that the Sidesplitters series was missing one critical genre to make it complete: jokes about bodily functions. Here you will find the silliest, the wackiest, the groan-out-loudingest collection of bathroom jokes ever collected for the under-ten set. We recommend you dish it up at a slumber party with a big helping of beans—and then run for cover. What does the Queen do if she breaks wind? She issues a royal pardon.

EPIC ADVENTURES The larger-than-life stories that inspire us all

EPIC FLIGHTS by Von Hardesty, illustrated by Peter Bull There is nothing more inspiring to mankind than flight. This book looks at five of man’s most remarkable airborne adventures: Charles Lindberg’s transatlantic flight; Breitling Orbiter 3, the world’s greatest balloon adventure; Apollo 11’s trip to the Moon; Amy Johnson’s 1930 flight from England to Australia in a Gypsy Moth biplane; and Voyager’s amazing uninterrupted around-the-world flight in 1986. Each story is illustrated with a wealth of original source material, photographs, maps, and an engaging narrative that outlines the engineering, planning, and sheer derring-do behind these awe-inspiring feats.

EPIC TREKS by Dr. Betty Hagglund, illustrated by Peter Bull

EPIC FLIGHTS 978-0-7534-6669-8 EPIC TREKS 978-0-7534-6668-1 Paper Over Board • September Ages: 10 to 14 • Grades: 5 to 9 11 7/8 x 10 1/4 • 64 pp.

From the earliest times, men and women have explored their world—some for riches and fame, others for religious beliefs, and still others for advancing knowledge. Of course, in the days before modern transport, finding their adventures often involved traveling incredible distances overland, extraordinary hardships, and living in uncertainty for months, even years, at a time. Here are collected four of the most epic explorations mankind has ever undertaken: Lewis & Clark in North America, Livingstone & Stanley in Africa, Burke & Wills in Australia, and Amundsen & Scott in Antarctica. The dangers and triumphs of each story is meticulously and engagingly written to create a vivid picture of these courageous journeys.

$19.99 ($22.99 CAN) VON HARDESTY has written widely on aerospace history. His books include Great Aviators and Epic Flights and Lindbergh: Flight’s Enigmatic Hero. DR. BETTY HAGGLUND has spent many years studying and writing about exploration and has published numerous books and articles on the topic. A NATION OF IMMIGRANTS by Paul Robert Walker Along with the dominant narrative of the founding of America, there is a parallel history to tell—the story of the successive waves of immigrants that formed the backbone of every aspect of American expansion. This book begins with the arrival of prehistoric man across the Bering land bridge and moves forward through the first European settlers and the arrival of African Americans in the slavery period to the wave of Irish immigrants during the 1850s, the arrival of Chinese as laborers during the late 19th century, and the mass arrival of new workers to fuel the Industrial Revolution. It finishes by covering the modern period right to the present day. Readers will appreciate the rich and important historical legacy that immigrants have given America.

THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION by Hilarie N. Staton The story of the Industrial Revolution is the story of America’s rise to power in the world. This book traces the history of the US industrial movement, from the individual craftsmen of the American colonial period through the rise of early factories making use of water for power and transportation. It covers the role America’s vast natural resources played in the growth of industry, the explosion of invention, wealth, and poverty in the late 1800s, and the rise of mass production that defined American economic power through the 20th century. Along the way, it tells the very human story of how this progress affected generations of Americans who helped make the Industrial Revolution possible.

A GENIUS CHAT WITH

SIMON BASHER Q: THE STYLE OF ILLUSTRATION IN YOUR BOOKS IS VERY DISTINCTIVE. WHAT INFLUENCES INSPIRED YOU IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF YOUR STYLE? SB: I’ve been interested in art and illustration since I was a kid. I studied illustration at Art College and became familiar with many classical and modern artists but a recurring interest has always been comics, graphic novels, pop art and character design. Comics like 2000AD, sci-fi artists such as Roger Dean and fine artists Michael English, Paul Klee and Dali. I also had a strong passion for Dick Bruna the creator of Miffy and Hergé who wrote TinTin. My fascination has always been with creating very simple characters using minimal line work but conveying depths of detail and personality.

Q: WHAT TECHNIQUES DO YOU USE TO CREATE THE ART FOR YOUR BOOKS? SB: I work with the very talented writer Dan Green and different consultants for each book. Dan has a fantastic ability to write about difficult subjects and concepts but still keep it very concise and humorous. Once I have read the text and researched the visuals of the subject I look for the quintessential personality traits and key points. I do a small pencil sketch then work using Adobe illustrator and a pen and graphic tablet to draw a digital version.

Q: HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHICH TOPICS TO TACKLE? SB: After we had created the first book and it was well received by both students and teachers the publisher commissioned two more books to complement The Periodic Table, these were Physics and Biology. They were also well received and from there we have continued to explore Science and educational subjects. The main goal is to take subjects that can be very abstract and difficult to understand on that first encounter and make them engaging, friendly, informative and hopefully fun.

Q: IF YOU COULD BE ANY ELEMENT FROM THE PERIODIC TABLE, WHICH ELEMENT WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY? SB: Bromine, firstly it’s a very interesting element but mainly because I like the hat I designed for him!

Q: WHAT BOOKS CAN YOUR FANS BE LOOKING OUT FOR NEXT? SB: I’m working on some fantastic titles at the moment, these include Oceans, Weather, Dinosaurs and I’m particularly looking forward to Technology.
