Kingfisher Leadership news ‘Ten Commandments of Spiritual Authority’, taken from “Spiritual Authority” by Watchman Nee

Our three challenges for 2018: 1 - Authority

Authority. Whenever this subject is discussed, it seems to be focussed upon who is in authority in the church, who should obey whom, and so on. In other words, the discussion The church’s about authority is most often internally focussed - and this mandate: to an important and (See Matthew 28:18) declare on earth iscontentious subject. Many, for that which has 2. God’s delegated example, have taken the 6th point that Watchman Nee authority does not belong already been makes (opposite) as a license to the person exercising it declared in to ‘lord it over’ their – that person is just a congregation or group, and channel. Heaven this has led to spiritual abuse (See Daniel 4:28-33) and to the ‘heavy shepherding’ movement 3. The channel of delegated without realising that true leadership and true authority is responsible to God for authority comes from true submission to the how that authority is exercised. Lordship of Christ and a true servant heart towards those we are leading. (See Numbers 20: 1 - 14) However, I believe that the Lord is wanting us to 4. A leader is one who recognizes consider another aspect of authority, namely the God’s authority manifested in realauthority that He has given the church. He life situations. taught us to pray, “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, here on (See Job 42:5) earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10). Speaking directly to Peter, and, by extension, to 5. Subjection to authority means the other apostles, he declared: that a person is subjected to God Himself and not to the channel through which the authority comes. 1. One who learns spiritual authority as the power base for ministry must recognize the essential Source of all authority: God.

(See Matthew 16:8-9)

6. Rebellion against authority means that a person is not subjecting himself to God, though it may appear that the person is rejecting some impure manifestation of God’s authority through a human channel. (See Numbers 16) 7. People who are under God’s authority look for and recognize spiritual authority and willingly place themselves under it. (See Luke 7:1-10) 8. Spiritual authority is never exercised for one’s own benefit, but for those under it. (See Matthew 20:25-28) 9. A person in spiritual authority does not have to insist on obedience – that is the moral responsibility of the follower. (see 1 Samuel 18:1-9) 10. God is responsible to defend spiritual authority. (See again Numbers 16)

Questions to ponder: 1. What stops no. 6 above from opening the door to spiritual abuse? 2. What would you look for to assess whether someone has true spiritual authority?

“Whatever you bind [forbid, declare to be improper and unlawful] on earth will have [already] been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose [permit, declare lawful] on earth will have [already] been loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 16:19, Amplified version). They didn’t have authority to change God’s mind on things or to declare things on earth in a bid to get those things ratified in heaven - they had authority to declare on earth that which was already bound in heaven or loosed in heaven. This, I believe is part of the apostolic role of the church today - to declare: ‘Your Kingdom come!”, to loose (declare allowed), to bind (declare forbidden) so that His Kingdom will more fully be experienced here on earth. We are not called to simply put up with and accept the designs that satan has on this world, we are challenged to take up the authority given to us, to declare ‘Your Kingdom Come!’, both by the ways in which we radically serve in this world, and through engaging in the spiritual battle, which we will consider in the next Leadership Newsletter.
