NGV Contemporary // Nicolas Reyes Beltran// Studio 36 // Level C
NGV Contemporary is a sculptural expression of its site conditions. The design is heavily influenced by the opportunities provided by its location and is a sweeping gesture that presents itself to the city around it. The double skin arrangement aims to provide the visitor with an intimate encounter between them and the art on exhibit. The desired result is to provide an experience that spawns moments of joy, wonder, and reflection. The monolithic building provides the city with a temple for contemporary arts and further establishes Melbourne as a world capital of culture.

The area inside the skin is treated as a conditioned space and the triple layering of mesh, polycarbonate and concrete creates different levels of thermal break. Airflow is created by the sun heating up the skin cooling causing hot air to rise similar to a Solar Chimney

The detail Section shows the perforated metal mesh overlay onto a translucent polycarbonate skin. The idea behind it is for the mesh to maintain the monolithic form of the building and the internal polycarbonate panels to be varied according to the program on every level. The mesh will be continuous but the polycarbonate panels can be alternated in terms of transparency to reveal views or filter light according to the program requirements.
The basement allows for trucks to enter to the loading bay from where art and deliveries can be dropped off and collected. From the loading bay, there is access onto the workshop where art can be assembled and transported to the galleries through the service lift or moved onto the main storage area of the building for objects, not on exhibition.

The mezzanine level is an open space where art can be arranged with great flexibility and is the first floor where the skin can be experienced. The purpose of this floor is to allow for escalators to be feasible to provide an area for freestanding art walls to be placed according to the needs of the exhibition.

Is an open space where screens or walls can be arranged and Closed off by a curtain for total darkness. The balcony allows for doubleheight sculptures to be placed. This area shows the greatest challenge in the design of this building which is to place walls in a floor plate that will not pierce through the skin as the building is tapering up. The solution to this problem was to use the floor plate above and its geometry to give form to the walls below. The walls on all floors are directly related to the plate above ensuring they do not pierce through the skin and the resulting juxtaposition creates a balcony that allows the visitor to experience the sweeping skin.
