Together we can
Our Vision We are very proud of our diverse intake and work hard to enable everyone to feel part of the school. Our motto is ‘Together we can’ and we try to reflect this right across the school with students, staff, parents and the wider community working in partnership to provide the best opportunities for young people. We aim to ensure that all of our students develop positive attitudes to learning through recognising their achievements and nurturing their skills, talents, interests and abilities. We want our students to be confident, responsible citizens who have an understanding of the world around them and are able to make a real contribution to the school community and beyond. We aim to promote an ethos of tolerance, respect, fairness and equality, where all students are valued. Whatever your child’s interests and abilities, Kingsbury School and Sports College is the right choice because at Kingsbury, Every Child really does Matter.
‘Students from different backgrounds get on very well with each other. This is a strength of the school.’ OfSTED

Introduction Welcome to the Kingsbury School and Sports College prospectus. It is designed to give you a flavour of the school and the experiences our students have during their time with us. We are a multicultural, 11-16 community comprehensive school of 900 students set on an 11 acre site in Erdington about three miles north of Birmingham city centre. We have been a Sports College since 2003 and are now in our second phase of specialist status; our 2nd target setting subject is ICT.
Enjoyment
Our innovative curriculum has been praised by OfSTED. We aim to meet the needs of every learner through a broad, balanced, appropriate curriculum which includes both academic and vocational courses. As a Sports College we have an emphasis on healthy lifestyles and, in addition to PE lessons, students are encouraged to take part in physical and outdoor activities. We recognise that not all young people enjoy team games so we have orienteering, mountain biking, climbing, archery, trekking and dance available as part of their PE course. We also offer residential experiences such as; an annual ski trip; Year 7 camp; Year 9 camp; Duke of Edinburgh award scheme; HMS Belfast history trip; surfing weekends and much, much, more... Our innovative enrichment programme allows students to develop their skills and talents through activities such as singing, circus skills, deejaying, performing arts and enterprise.

Achievement We want to recognise progress and celebrate success. Our students are encouraged to be creative, solve problems, think for themselves and find the best way of learning that suits their needs. We offer students the chance to gain different types of qualifications from GCSEs to NVQs. We want students to take qualifications when they are ready so we enter some students for examinations earlier than others. We track each student’s progress to make sure they aim for the highest possible qualifications. We inform parents and carers of how well their child is doing as we believe the home school partnership is the key to success. Our Learning Platform, ‘Kingsbury Live!’ allows students and parents to access teaching resources, homework tasks and lesson content. It provides live information about school events and the opportunity for electronic communication between home and school.
‘The range of vocational options has been increased and this is providing broader and more appropriate opportunities for students.’ OfSTED
Leadership We provide plenty of opportunities for students to play a full part in the decisions that we make, from recruiting staff to improving our facilities. We encourage our students to take on leadership responsibilities such as: prefect; sports leader; peer mentor; form representative or school council member. We provide training for our young leaders to be successful in their roles and offer qualifications in leadership, such as the Junior Sports Leader’s Award.
‘Members of the school council and form representatives feel their views are valued.’ OfSTED
Preparation for life Students have the opportunity to learn vocational skills such as construction and motor vehicle maintenance. Some students complete work placements as part of their course and all students are encouraged to complete two weeks of work experience during Year 10 and Year 11. Students are given the chance to practice interviews with employers and we have good links with Connexions and further education colleges. We aim to make sure our students value learning and continue with education beyond 16. The majority of our students go on to further study at local colleges and school sixth forms.
‘There are good links through work experience with local companies that support students’ preparation for the world of work.’ OfSTED
