On the third day of the hunt, we located a great bull hanging out in the cedars. Unable to get a shot that morning, we watched where he went to bed and made a plan for the evening. The bull appeared at 300 yards early in the evening to drink from a puddle in a large rock. After a few minutes, the bull presented the right angle and Tom was able to take him with his son, Drew, at his side.

Everyone worked their butts off and covered a ton of country before locating Shelly’s bull. Bull I harvested “Mega” on the final day of general archery season in Western Oregon. I turned up this behemoth bull on a last-minute solo hunt close to home. Mega was a local legend, and my brother had years of trail camera pictures of him and lots of time invested in chasing him. I arrowed the bull after eight hours of cat and mouse in the thick coastal conifers. Thanks to my brother, Evan Cunningham of Coastland Outfitters, for teaching me how to hunt. After passing on six bulls opening morning, we finally spotted the giant bull bedded on a steep hillside. Over two hours later, I had my bull of a lifetime! He has tons of character with a split beam over 40" long and a base that is over 14.5".

With one week left to hunt, I made another trip back to Utah from Texas with my son, Willie. It was a great opportunity for some quality mother/son time and hopefully have some help packing mom’s elk. On day 2, we found our target bull. It was a long and steep hike through hip-deep snow to get close enough for a shot. At 450 yards, I settled in on my pack and made it happen. I’m so thankful to have spent this time with Willie.
