Smartphone data ‘Our Data Ourselves’ aims to understand the personal data young people generate on smartphones in their everyday lives. Working with teenagers between the ages of 14 and 18 from Young Rewired State, the project will develop tools and applications to visualise the data generated. The project aims to develop an ethical framework for data sharing, to make this framework available to the wider community and to highlight areas of development for privacy policy. The study is being spearheaded by Dr Mark Cote and Dr Tobias Blanke from King’s Department of Digital Humanities. The Globe Theatre
The future of modern languages A team of King’s academics led by Professor Catherine Boyle has been awarded almost £3 million by the Arts & Humanities Research Council to lead research that will seek to inform the future of the study and teaching of modern languages. The Language Acts and Worldmaking project will explore how learning a language affords greater cultural understanding of the world through the multilingual and multicultural lens of Iberian languages, empires and contact zones.
In partnership with the Royal Archives, King’s is undertaking a major project to digitise and interpret the archives of the Georgian papers held at Windsor Castle. The five year programme, officially launched by Her Majesty the Queen, will digitise some 350,000 pages of original archives, including official and private papers of Britain’s Hanoverian monarchs, as well as other members of the Royal Family, politicians, courtiers and the Privy Purse. This groundbreaking work will shed new light on Georgian Britain, its monarchy and empire during a time of profound cultural, political, economic and social change. Discover our courses

The role of CHD7 in stem cell maintenance in the brain identified Research led by Dr Albert Basson has identified how new neurons in the brain are regulated throughout life. The new research shows that CHD7 plays a key role in maintaining stem cells in the brain. As mutations in CHD7 are associated with a range of cognitive disabilities in CHARGE syndrome, these findings have implications for understanding the basis of brain defects in CHARGE patients. Dr Basson said: ‘We are very excited about these findings and are continuing our research to fully understand how CHD7 controls brain development.’
Piercing teeth in vertebrates did not evolve from their scales A collaborative study (King’s College London Dental Institute, Natural History Museum, Birkbeck (UoL), University of Sheffield and University of Vienna) has questioned a key theory: that formidable teeth, for example, in sharks, evolved from external skin scales. Scientists used X-ray computed tomography to examine the fossil ray, which has near identical dentition to sharks. The exquisite detail identified differences between the organisation and replacement of the animal’s tooth-like external scales along its saw-rostrum and teeth structure. The data has provided exceptional insight into the evolution of the teeth, allowing the use of these methods to find out more about the evolution and diversity of the teeth of the most fearsome creatures on Earth. kcl.ac.uk/dentistry

King’s at the forefront of the fight against Ebola
Study on safety of prescribing fewer antibiotics
A team from King’s Health Partners has been working at the heart of the UK government’s response to the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone. Dr Oliver Johnson, King’s MBBS alumnus and Director of the King’s Sierra Leone Partnership, has been honoured with an OBE for his services in the fight against Ebola. He was also named one of London’s 1,000 most Influential people by the Evening Standard. Made up in large part by volunteers, the team has played a vital role in responding to Ebola since the virus first reached the country in May 2014. They won a Guardian University Award in 2015 for their role at the centre of the ongoing Ebola response in west Africa.
A new study by King’s Division of Health and Social Care Research has found that reducing antibiotic prescribing for respiratory tract infections – such as coughs, colds, sore throats and ear infections – is not linked to an increase in the most serious bacterial complications, such as bacterial meningitis. The study, published in the BMJ, investigated whether reducing antibiotic prescribing for people attending their GP with respiratory tract infections could have an effect on safety. The widespread inappropriate use of antibiotics is contributing to the development of strains of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics.

Hard water linked to risk of eczema in infants A new study led by the St John’s Institute of Dermatology at King’s reveals that high levels of water hardness in the home may be linked to the development of eczema early in life. Around a fifth of children in the UK are affected by eczema. Researchers found that living in a hard water area was associated with an up to 87% increased risk of eczema at three months of age, independent of domestic water chlorine content. The founding of WiSTEM
At the Strand Campus, a legendary robot known as Inkha held the role of university receptionist for over a decade. Following her retirement, a group of enthusiastic and talented staff and students within the Centre for Robotics (part of the Department of Informatics) have created a new receptionist robot for the Strand Building, known as "Kinba". After a thorough induction process, Kinba is now working in our Strand reception and is enjoying getting to know staff and students from across the university, as well as finding time to tweet regularly.
We are proud to provide an inspiring environment for our students. Following the Faculty’s Ada Lovelace Day celebrations in 2015, a group of enthused students came together to form WiSTEM, Women in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics. The society’s main aim is to inspire young women to pursue careers in the STEM disciplines and work towards gender parity throughout academic and industrial STEM fields. Their successful initiatives to date include a mentoring scheme, a crash-course in LaTeX and a workshop to explore imposter syndrome.

After predicting gravitational waves in 1916, Einstein became uncertain about their physical reality. It wasn’t until the 1950s and early 60s that their physical status was clarified, with important contributions to the theory being made by members of the King’s relativity group such as Hermann Bondi, Felix Pirani and Roger Penrose. A number of experiments are attempting to detect gravitational radiation directly, and to add it to electromagnetic radiation as a tool for investigating the universe. kcl.ac.uk/nms

Supporting women with postnatal weight management: The SWAN Feasibility Trial Debra Bick, Professor of Evidence Based Midwifery Practice of the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery, is leading a team of researchers from King’s College London, St Georges’ University of London, Nottingham University, Lambeth and Southwark Public Health and the National Childbirth Trust to conduct this ground-breaking two-year feasibility study. The study aims to discover if women who are overweight when they become pregnant (or gain more weight than they need to during pregnancy) can be
supported to lose weight after giving birth and adopt more positive health behaviours if they attend weight management groups provided by Slimming World. This is the first study to consider a specific postnatal intervention. Professor Debra Bick said, “Our study is very timely, with increased recognition of the importance of effective postnatal care, including support for weight management, to potentially improve the life-course health of women and their infants. However, before recommending change, we need high quality evidence of effectiveness.” Watch our latest research videos kcl.ac.uk/nursing/research, then select ‘Research Themes’

New blood test to personalise depression treatment
WORLD-LEADING FOR OUR RESEARCH IMPACT
For the first time, scientists at the IoPPN have developed a blood test that accurately and reliably predicts whether depressed patients will respond to common antidepressants, which could herald a new era of personalised treatment for people with depression. Until now, it has been impossible to establish if individual patients will respond to common antidepressants or if they need a more assertive treatment plan.
REF 2014
Professor Carmine Pariante said ‘The identification of biomarkers that predict treatment response is crucial in reducing the social and economic burden of depression, improving quality of life of patients. This study provides a clinicallysuitable approach for personalising antidepressant therapy.’ Listen to our podcast soundcloud.com/ kings-college-london IoPPN, Denmark Hill
Pushing the boundaries of science to find novel treatments for eating disorders Anorexia nervosa and bulimia are lethal psychiatric disorders and those who suffer from these debilitating conditions, along with doctors, researchers and experts in this field, are desperate to find answers. IoPPN academics, Dr Sally Marlow and Professor Ulrike Schmidt, are turning to the brain to look for answers. Brain scans reveal areas and circuits in the brain which behave differently in people with anorexia nervosa. It’s thought that the food rituals, obsessional thoughts and habits that characterise the disorder become entrenched over time, making it ever more difficult to break free from them. Armed with this knowledge, researchers are now using electrical stimulation to reset

Incarnations: India in 50 lives
Peopling the Green Sahara?
ASPIRES 2
Professor Sunil Khilnani, Director of King’s India Institute, presented ‘Incarnations: India in 50 lives’ on BBC Radio 4. In this captivating series, Professor Khilnani explored India’s economic origins and future through the lives of the industrialists Jamsetji Tata and Dhirubhai Ambani, and told the story of the leader of the Indian independence movement, Mahatma Gandhi, and his opponent Jinnah, as well as exploring India’s artists, musicians, mathematicians and filmmakers. The series coincided with the publication of Professor Khilnani’s new book of 50 original essays about 50 extraordinary Indians who have helped make India, and whose influence continues to shape the 21st century.
King’s Geography Department has been awarded a Leverhulme Trust grant for an innovative three-year research project to examine the ecological and human response to climate change in the Sahara which went from desert to ‘green’ and back to desert in 5,000 years. Believed to be the largest scale project of its type ever undertaken, the research will explore the climatic, ecological and demographic history of the enigmatic ‘Green Sahara’, addressing how climate change affected broad-scale population dynamics, subsistence and cultural innovation.

Fees & living costs
Fees & living costs
Fees & living costs This overview is your starting point to understanding the costs involved in studying at King’s and living in London, and getting advice on how to fund your studies. Please check our website for fees for 2017 entry.
Full-time fee
Deposit and application fee
For details of course fees for 2017, please check our webpages.
You will be advised through King’s Apply whether you are required to pay an application fee of £50 to submit your application. Some courses have a fee deposit scheme. When you receive your offer you will be advised whether a deposit is required (usually 10 per cent of the tuition fee).
kcl.ac.uk/postgraduate
Part-time fee Where courses are offered on a part-time basis, fees are usually half the annual cost of the full-time fee. Full details are listed on our webpages. kcl.ac.uk/postgraduate
Bench fee Some research students are also charged a ‘bench fee’ in addition to the tuition fee to cover the cost of consumables and equipment used during research. Check with your faculty whether this is applicable to you.
Equivalent or lower level qualification (ELQ) fee If you are a home or EU student seeking to obtain an ELQ (other than teacher training qualifications), please contact admissions for advice on whether this will affect your tuition fees.

You can usually apply through King’s. See kcl.ac.uk/gradfunding
If you require a student visa to study in the UK you must have sufficient funds to cover both fees and maintenance (for yourself and any dependents in the UK). UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) requires you to demonstrate that you have access to a minimum amount of money to cover living costs. The amount changes regularly so always check the UKVI website for the most up-to-date information. If you have dependents you will have to show more funds are available. We would also recommend that you have access to more funds than this in order to cover all costs and any emergencies that may arise. More information is available from the King’s Student Advice Service. kcl.ac.uk/advice
How to pay: instalments and deposits Fees are payable in two equal instalments on 31 October and 31 January or 14 days from the date of the invoice if later. Some courses have a fee deposit scheme. When you are offered a place, you are advised whether or not a deposit is required (usually 10 per cent of the fee).

LAUREN Arts & Cultural Management MA
Studying at King’s is such an incredible opportunity because of the fantastic cultural organisations on your doorstep and the links King’s has with them. I did an internship with Fantasy High Street, an arts events organisation, which I found out about on my department’s Facebook page. The experience was invaluable and it was great to learn directly from people working in the arts. The Cultural Institute at King’s also gives you a sense of how arts organisations run and how to apply the knowledge that you’re learning in your degree.
Partnerships If you study with our Department of Culture, Media & Creative Industries you will be able to take advantage of our strong links with over 20 creative careers partners and enjoy modules co-taught with the Tate. If you are taking a Film Studies MA, then we also have partnerships with the BFI, Southbank, the national institute for film. We also offer a joint MA or PhD with Humboldt University Berlin, and joint PhDs with Hong Kong University.
During my MA, I took part in King’s Cultural Challenge, which is a universitywide competition. A few hundred people get into teams and come up with a pitch for a cultural event or programme, then present it to four directors of leading London cultural organisations. I competed in the final and got to take part in a presentation workshop. It’s something that was just incredible to have as part of my master’s degree. One of the best things about pursuing a PhD at King’s is having ownership of the whole project. Of course the expertise of the supervisor is key and I’ve been superbly guided throughout – but it’s very much a journey of intellectual independence. Undertaking scientific research in central London exposes me to conferences, lectures and specialist events. I also meet a variety of academics. All this keeps me firmly at the cutting edge of my field and broadens my knowledge. I also have easy access to excellent facilities and equipment. London is a great place to be and it is full of fascinating activities. During my study, I’ve made great friends from all over the world. But it’s more than social. We get to try out ideas, compare experiences and underst and mindsets which are so different from our own. That’s another part of education. Just what does it really mean to be a part of a global university and to live and study right in the heart one of the world’s most innovative cities? It means being at the core of new technology and surrounded by breakthrough businesses changing the world around us. That is certainly a feeling you will get from studying one of our computer science and engineering courses – you will be part of a diverse department that covers everything from theoretical computer science all the way to engineering, telecoms and robotics. And our home in central London means you are only minutes away from the worlds of technology and finance – we have strong partnerships in place with London Tech City in Shoreditch, with the City of London, and with global players like Facebook and Google. You will find a department that’s truly connected – not just to the rest of the university, but also to industry. You will have the chance to take part in joint projects with an industrial partner – and it may even help you to get work once you leave us. We also have one of the most active tech societies in the UK, with regular events such as hackathons to help build your skills and your professional profile. King’s also has a strong entrepreneurial spirit – our Red Lion Challenge business incubation service supports many of our students with advice and capital as they take their first steps in turning their ideas into reality.

ARAZ Regenerative Dentistry MSc, Dental & Health Sciences Research PhD
Before coming to King’s I was working as a senior house officer in maxillofacial surgery, where we dealt with a variety of cases of craniofacial defects and oral cancer. This work raised many questions about how to manage the defects of surgery and optimise the healing process. I was looking for a course that would answer all these questions. With its international reputation, the Regenerative Dentistry MSc at King’s was the course I was looking for. I enjoyed every single part of this master’s, especially working on my final project. The academic staff are very supportive and the Dental Institute occupies the top floors of Guy’s Hospital, which provides a fantastic environment for us to carry out our research. My dream came true in 2015 when I got a studentship from the Graduate School to study my PhD at King’s. Back in my homeland there is a high demand for well-trained academic staff and clinical researchers, so having this privilege from King’s will enable me to make a significant contribution. With 11 years of professional experience in software engineering, I decided to change my career to become a teacher. After securing a scholarship, I was offered a place for the PGCE at two prestigious universities, and looked at the courses very carefully to make my choice. I decided to accept the place at King’s because it clearly had the best offering. I wanted to be able to teach Computer Science at A-level and only King’s PGCE was guaranteeing training placements which included teaching sixth form classes. Additionally, for the subject specific part of the PGCE, I would have been taught by three senior lecturers and researchers instead of just one. Now that I am in my first year of teaching in an ‘Outstanding’ school, I realise how well the course prepared me for my teaching career. ’ Marco Computer Science PGCE kcl.ac.uk/postgraduate-community

I am a lawyer who, for over a decade, worked in child protection and youth justice. I wanted to undertake further studies to consolidate and enhance my skills and knowledge in child development and children’s rights and welfare in the UK. What particularly attracted me to the Child Studies MA was the multi-disciplinary dimension to the course which would, I felt, enable me to gain deeper understanding and appreciation of the different disciplines that work together in the interests of children. I would strongly recommend this course to practitioners as well as academics.’ Jennifer Child Studies MA kcl.ac.uk/postgraduate-community

‘I became interested in poverty and inequality after getting involved in politics during my undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences. I found that poverty was political, and after graduating I wanted to focus on these issues in more detail. The academic standing of the people here is second to none. I really enjoyed studying at King’s. Since finishing the master’s I’ve interviewed some former Prime Ministers and Secretaries of State for a video aimed at keeping international development at the top of the agenda. Before studying at King’s I was working at UNICEF, where I got involved in the organisation’s work which recognised the likely impact of climate change on children worldwide. This helped me realise what a massive threat disasters and climate change pose to international development. I chose King’s because of its global reputation and because it offers a master’s taught by leading academics in the field. During the course we attended a conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in Istanbul where we met disaster practitioners from across the world. We talked to senior staff from the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) about the mutual benefits of a post-master’s internship and they agreed to establish this. I was the first King’s student to take part in the three-month internship at ADPC in Bangkok and afterwards worked there for two more years. The experience was fantastic and has really shaped my career. Right now I’m managing a post-earthquake recovery programme Nepal at Mission East, a Danish NGO. My master’s gave me the background and understanding to start my career in DRR and I still refer back to my learning at King’s. Put simply, I couldn’t do the job I do now without it.

At King’s, we see illness as a human experience that is shaped by social, political and economic conditions, by cultural beliefs and ethical values, and by systems of language and meaning – and so the approach we take to studying it has to be interdisciplinary.
You will be supported by lecturers and professors who teach the subjects they research and who will help you to pursue your own ideas. Of course we look beyond our walls too – supporting you in the next steps you take in your career by helping you to engage with NGOs and charities, think tanks, government, intergovernmental organisations, the private sector, academia and medicine.

DR OLIVER JOHNSON OBE, King’s MBBS alumnus and Visiting Lecturer in Global Health
I’d always been interested in global health growing up because I travelled a lot, and studying medicine at King’s really nurtured that. I was part of a very international student community and I realised that in today’s environment it is essential to take a global approach to health because we live in a completely globalised society. I first arrived in Freetown in January 2013 as Director of King’s Sierra Leone Partnership, part of the King’s Centre for Global Health. We initially worked to help strengthen the local health system and then stayed throughout the Ebola outbreak in the capital. King’s was fantastic, providing us with logistical support and senior expertise and offering the highest level of technical support throughout our response to the outbreak. I don’t know where I’m going to go next – back into the field, with governments or non-governmental organisations – but I want to keep a relationship with King’s throughout my career so I can keep coming back, working with students and doing research into the very long term. Our focus has always been on combining research with the practical realities of how it then translates in the real world, in some of the busiest and most diverse clinical, policy and management environments in the UK. The emphasis here is also very much on collaboration and best practice sharing, particularly internationally. We’ve built strong, productive relationships with over 160 overseas partners ranging from hospitals to universities, giving you a broad range of opportunities to increase your own professional network for the future.

As a student of the Nineteenth Century Studies MA course, I loved the intimate class sizes and diversity of modules offered. The classes were very much a dialogue between the students and the teacher, which allowed the topics of discussion at hand to be engaged with thoroughly. With a King’s College London degree, I was able to return home to Canada and begin a job right away. I am now working in the education sector as an academic consultant, and hope to move back to the UK in the future to pursue a job in the history and heritage field.’ Mackenzie Nineteenth Century Studies MA kcl.ac.uk/postgraduate-community

History of War MA
I became interested in the history of war because I am of a generation whose parents served in World War II. My father, uncle and all my friends’ fathers served in the war and they never talked about it. It was this mysterious world that I was not allowed to enter. I developed a really strong interest in trying to find out what they experienced. This led me to study military history. I want to record what these people did, the sacrifices they made and what they went through so that it’s not forgotten.

I graduated from my last degree 40 years ago. The first advice I would give to other mature learners is don’t be frightened. You can do this and coming back is easier than you’d think. King’s is so welcoming to mature students and my professors were always available when I needed advice and guidance. If you’ve thought about returning for a degree – do it, it’s worth it!
Partnerships Externally, King’s has links with The University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill and you can also take joint PhD courses with the National University of Singapore (NUS) and with Hong Kong’s oldest and most esteemed research university, the University of Hong Kong (HKU).

At King’s we have an open, multidisciplinary environment – and for a subject area like imaging sciences, it has fostered an approach that has put us at the forefront of the field. You will be taught by the very best in the industry – experts with years of experience in medicine, physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, engineering and computing. We run a number of unique NHS-accredited courses with the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine and not surprisingly, we have a great reputation for research in this area. Most importantly, much of our research work has been translated into clinical best practice in real clinical settings thanks to our relationships with our King’s Health Partners: Guy’s and St Thomas’, King’s College Hospital and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trusts.

The inter-disciplinary nature of the degree has allowed me to develop my practical material skills as well as my critical thinking. Being able to learn and develop my linguistic abilities, as well as some manuscript training, allowed me to engage with primary material that had been previously inaccessible to my research. Moreover, the networking possibilities made available to students by studying at institutions such as the British Museum and British Library, and meeting academics from external organisations at research groups and societies allowed me to challenge and engage with front-running academic debates.’ Rebekah Medieval Studies MA kcl.ac.uk/postgraduate-community

The best part was that most of the professors work as either solicitors or barristers and this gives us a really good understanding of how to apply law in practice. One of our professors took us to see him defending a case on Treaty Interpretation in court, which was a great opportunity for us to experience this environment. As an international student I found the UK, and London in particular, really welcoming. I felt like a local, instead of a person just living here for a short amount of time, so I had a great experience.

DAN Accounting, Accountability & Financial Management MSc
Before I came to London, I was studying my bachelor’s degree in China. I decided to do a postgraduate degree at King’s to become more competitive in the job market and develop my professional knowledge of the field. Thanks to King’s Careers Department, I gained an internship with MG Group as an accountancy and tax intern. During the internship I developed a greater attention to detail; increased my business awareness skills and gained many opportunities to network with experts and professionals in my field. This really was great preparation for my future career. King’s has a brilliant reputation both in terms of academics and career opportunities. Additionally, the culture here is so diverse and dynamic – it’s a great place to study. As an international student, I found the other students extremely helpful when I first arrived. I really enjoy living in London and I would definitely recommend King’s for postgraduate study. It’s full of resources, interesting people and great professors. Professor Sir James Black always said that the five years he spent here at King’s as professor of analytical pharmacology were the happiest of his life. It’s no wonder that they were also the most productive, for a man once described as ‘the greatest drug-hunter of the 20th century’. Thanks to his incredible work here, he received a Nobel Prize for his pioneering research on beta-blockers and ulcer drugs.
At King’s, we also understand that research and development shouldn’t happen in isolation and we are proud to have forged such strong links with the pharmaceutical industry. Our commercial partners have an active and practical input into our curriculum, meaning that the teaching you receive is always up-to-date and completely relevant to the latest developments. It also means that you will build contacts and a professional network externally that will put you at a real advantage in an increasingly competitive job market.

At King’s you will see students and lecturers alike sharing ideas and grappling with big philosophical questions. Whether you want to delve into the history of philosophy, philosophy of mind and psychology, metaphysics, ethics or the philosophy of medicine, you will find a King’s expert who will guide you and be ready to debate with you. London’s religious and cultural diversity gives contemporary relevance to our study of religions, and King’s has one of the largest theology and religious studies departments in the UK. We focus on Judaism, Christianity and Islam, but also do exciting work in Buddhist studies. We have partnerships with the National Gallery, the Courtauld, Leo Baeck College, and the London School of Jewish Studies. As well as King’s fantastic library resources, you will have access to the British Library and Senate House Library. Studying theology and religious studies at King’s also offers opportunities to connect your studies to the arts through the Centre for Arts and the Sacred at King’s (ASK). In addition, our Centre for Social Transformation explores the nature of, and changes in, human self-understanding in the modern age. These centres are important to the interdisciplinary approach characteristic of our study of, and research into, religion at King’s.

My PhD borders on quite a few areas – philosophy of religion, philosophy of science, theology – and I chose King’s because they have the expertise to handle this. They’re really good at getting different departments to come in and talk and that’s helped me in terms of networking. You have people coming in to present papers who are really at the top of their field. The Graduate School has been a massive source of support during my research development. I’ve had courses on things like speed-reading and how to go about storing all the research I’m doing. They’re always putting something on that helps you ground yourself and gain skills that you might not have.

The story of physics has always been one of cooperation and collaboration, and it seems there’s something very special about doing science in an environment as diverse and stimulating as King’s. It certainly brought the best out in Nobel Prize winners like Maurice Wilkins, who worked on the discovery of the structure of DNA, and Peter Higgs, a King’s alumnus and first to predict the existence of the Higgs Boson particle.

The enormous diversity of patients who pass through their doors means you will have access to an incredibly varied clinical population and exposure to very specialist services and expertise. SLaM alone provides clinical services in seven London Boroughs, with a combined population of nearly two million. The experiences and knowledge gained from studying with us will give you the skills needed to succeed in your chosen career. Many of our students go on to pursue PhD research, or continue their studies to gain a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy). Others take on challenging clinical roles within the NHS or other healthcare settings, working in health psychology, forensic psychology, neurology, family therapy or mental health care. Many of our students are already established in their field of work and use their qualification as evidence of professional development. Some graduates move into the area of policymaking, scientific publishing, human resources, occupational health, management consultancy or roles in the pharmaceutical industry.

IN EUROPE FOR PSYCHIATRY AND PSYCHOLOGY VOICE OF THE ALUMNUS
The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience is such an active research institution so you’re right up to date with what’s relevant. It’s helped prepare me for working life and I’ve now secured a job at one of the major strategic consultancies based here in London. I’m originally from Copenhagen and studied my undergraduate degree in California. As well as a multicultural outlook, I think it gives you a sense of fulfilment to know that you can live somewhere new without knowing anyone and get on just fine.’ Oliver Organisational Psychiatry & Psychology MSc kcl.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/alumni

VOICE OF THE ACADEMIC
Neuroimaging is everywhere these days. Every morning newspapers and blogs are full of pictures of brains and colourful blobs promising to reveal the mysteries of just about everything. At the same time, neuroimaging as a scientific discipline has matured and this fast-paced cutting-edge research and clinical field is attracting the boldest and the brightest aiming to understand how the brain works in health and in disease. Neuroimaging is multidisciplinary by nature and we aim to train the next generation of neuroimaging experts so that they can push the field further, both technically and through its applications. Our experts in Defence Studies provide the professional military education and training support to the British military and any international visitors at the UK Joint Services Command and Staff College in Shrivenham – covering everything from military, naval, diplomatic and imperial history through to the ethics of conflict and strategic studies. If you are a civilian student, DSD provides postgraduate research courses with unparalleled access to archive materials and the defence sector. We see war as a human phenomenon. In the Department of War Studies, you will find that this approach means a remarkable diversity of research interests, disciplinary approaches, opinion and background exists among both staff and students. Our master’s courses will give you all the skills you need to support your career ambitions. You will be taught by people who are passionate pioneers at the forefront of world events as they happen – the War Studies academic team bring together a wealth of knowledge, as well as a growing network of links with other departments, think-tanks, organisations, policy-making bodies and institutions. These range from the Ministry of Defence and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, through to the Home Office, Chatham House, the International Institute of Strategic Studies and the MacArthur Foundation, Chicago.

The Telegraph VOICE OF THE ALUMNA
‘I look at my time at King’s with great fondness. For studying war studies generally and non-proliferation specifically there really is nowhere better, and King’s enjoys a reputation equalled by no other. I interned with an NGO that verifies the compliance with international treaties while at King’s. It was a wonderful opportunity to work in the field while still a student and acquire great insight and experience. What I feel summarises my MA was the fact that the field and our studies became so much more than just acquiring knowledge through reading. It became a year where we all lived and breathed non-proliferation.’ Kristiane Non-proliferation & International Security MA kcl.ac.uk/postgraduate-community

‘I enrolled on the MA to pursue in more depth a lifelong interest in global affairs alongside my job. The variety of issues covered and their relevance to the ‘real world’ made King’s a natural choice. As someone who works for a multinational firm, I have been delighted to note how much of the course content is relevant to the commercial world and the changing nature of the relations we have with governments and other institutions. A major feature for me has been the specific design of the course for distance learning, which has meant that I can combine study with extensive travel associated with my role.’ Richard International Relations & Contemporary War MA kcl.ac.uk/postgraduate-community

Changes to courses and guide information The following message contains some very important information. Please read it before you use this guide. This guide was printed in the autumn of 2016. It contains information on the courses that King’s College London (‘King’s’) intends to run for students who are planning to start at King’s in the autumn of 2017. King’s has made every effort to ensure that the information provided is both helpful and accurate but some changes, for example to courses, facilities or fees, may become necessary due to legitimate staffing, financial, regulatory or academic reasons.
Undergraduate-level courses (equivalent to final year undergraduate study) Grad Cert, Grad Dip: Graduate Certificates and Diplomas.
King’s will endeavour to keep changes to a minimum, and to keep applicants informed appropriately. For this reason, it is important that you regularly check the website for updates or contact King’s using the contact details contained within this document.

The university welcomes students from all over the world based solely on their academic ability and potential, from all social, cultural and economic backgrounds. All applications are considered on their individual merits and treated in a fair and equal way based on the information provided to the university through the application process. King’s College London is committed to embedding best practice into all of its activities to ensure that the university becomes a more supportive, inclusive and inspiring place to work and study, to enable everyone to reach their full potential. No liability to parents, sponsors or other third parties King’s dealings and contracts with students and prospective students do not create a contract or other legally binding relationship between King’s and anyone else, for example parents, guardians or sponsors. Degree awarding powers In July 2006 the Privy Council granted King’s degree-awarding powers in its own right. King’s exercises these powers whilst remaining a constituent College of the University of London. Therefore, all students who start a course in 2017 will study for a King’s College London degree.
