About the Summer School

A limited number of high-achieving students from the Mumbai and Delhi Summer School undergraduate programme will be offered a tuition scholarship to the King’s Summer School in London in July 2014.

Inspiring academics Our Summer School tutors are experts in their field who often complete ground-breaking research of their own; but most of all they have a real passion for what they do. Many come from King’s but for specific expertise we may also use external tutors and faculty from universities across the globe. Each of our tutors, whether internal or external to the College, undergo a selection process to ensure that they are engaging educators who enjoy working with students and can offer a unique and truly valuable learning experience.

Academic quality The academic quality of our courses is paramount. To help maintain our leading position and to provide excellent quality to our students, all of our courses must meet strict academic regulations. Each course comprises 45 teaching hours over two weeks. Coursework deadlines are typically two weeks after teaching finishes. Our courses are offered at a first year undergraduate level. Students who successfully complete the programme will receive a transcript.

Places are allocated on our courses on a first come first served basis. Early application is advised to avoid disappointment. We will send you notifications at each stage to update you on the progress of your application. H.R. College of Commerce & Economics is a leading commerce and management college in Mumbai, affiliated to the University of Mumbai. Located in the heart of South Mumbai, H.R. College was the first college to host the Summer School programme and continues to be a key supporter. H.R. Cities are home to an increasing share of everyone on earth and this means cities have never been more important. Course description

Giving an insight into the emergence of these growing ‘giants’ as undeniable economic and political actors in the international system, this course will provide you with the tools necessary to examine and define the BRICS as integrated players in a newly emerging world order. Join Mathilde Chatin to study the impact of the BRICS, both individually and collectively, on the current and future international scenario. This course will be International Relations based, but will also include trans-disciplinary economic perspectives as we look at the emergence of the BRICS. It tackles a range of themes: multilateralism, the reform of international organisations, and the formation of new blocs, BRICS participation in strategic debates on commercial negotiations, climate change, aid, development, and even sports mega-events. Using these scenarios we will explore and compare the respective attitudes and approaches of each BRICS country.

This course explores the crucial junction at which humankind now finds itself. This two-week course set in Delhi will use Delhi and other Indian cities as urban laboratories to explore crucial global urban challenges. Indian cities are some of the largest and fastest growing on the planet and offer a vital lens through which to ask critical concerns such as social issues, politics, urban planning and infrastructure as well as the relationship with the natural environment. Students will, through a mix of lectures, seminars, group work and individual learning exercises, come to understand how cities can be envisioned as organisms containing infinite and complex yet beautiful parts.

In an increasingly interconnected world, opportunities and problems from the Arab Spring to the European identity crisis and the ‘rise’ of Asia have become truly international.

Many countries across the globe have seen prolonged conflict and violence tear apart societies and cause unimaginable death and destruction. Conflict is everywhere on the news and it dominates high level political discussions from inter-state dialogue to forums at the United Nations.

Course description

Designed for all those interested in this unique sphere of academic study, students on this course will use practical case studies to examine approaches within International Relations, from core concepts like power or sovereignty to the specific theories of international politics, such as realist, liberal institutionalist, and constructivist thinking, as well as taking a close look at global governance and international political economy.

This interdisciplinary course will introduce students to different theories and approaches to the study of international conflict resolution and apply these approaches to specific case studies. Providing students with an understanding of basic marketing management issues, it will focus on the external environment of firms and the four Ps of marketing - product, price, promotion and place, applying the theories and concepts to the management of the marketing function within businesses. The course will also include an element of International Marketing and consider the importance of market research, segmentation, targeting, and positioning, as well as global market entry strategies. Understanding how markets are segmented and how products can be sold to different customers is vital for young entrepreneurs and students in the field of marketing. It provides an insight into the history of brain research, including rare glimpses into the brain’s development and functions thanks to neuroimaging techniques. What is the applicable law that governs trans-border commerce? How can disputes arising in this global environment be settled effectively?

The iconic ‘Hollywood’ sign situated in the hills of Los Angeles stands now as both a symbol and a relic of the US film industry. Various famous studio brands that have traded under that sign are collectively responsible for some of the most popular and profitable films of all time.

Course description

Transnational corporations form an omnipresent and powerful force in today’s world. They impact and mould legal and administrative practices across global boundaries. The course ‘International Commercial Law’ provides a sound understanding of central ‘principals’, relevant institutions and actors dealing with international commerce. The course, furthermore, covers topical aspects of contemporary dispute settlement mechanisms in international business law. This takes into account the role of domestic and international litigation, and includes international arbitration, ranging from ad hoc tribunals over state-to-state proceedings in international trading relations to investor-state arbitration. Through theoretical analysis and elements of practical training, the course provides participants with an understanding of crucial basic concepts underlying the evolvement of international commerce.

Course description

Yet, Hollywood represents far more than any concept of a national product, and its global impact has both hindered and inspired filmmaking movements from post-war Europe to contemporary Bollywood. This course asks students to consider the unavoidable impact Hollywood has made on global cinema culture. By analysing the formal and stylistic conventions that characterise Hollywood filmmaking: such as the studio system, stardom, genre and the blockbuster, we will place these in dialogue with a number of different filmmaking styles from historical and national contexts including the French New Wave, Spaghetti Western and the contemporary Bollywood franchise in order to challenge assumptions made about Hollywood’s cultural and artistic impact.

In this course we will consider Shakespeare in both his local and global contexts. We begin with an examination of early modern London, the city Shakespeare called home for many years, and the theatre industry in which he worked.

Exploring these and other questions, this course will examine gender, media and culture in transnational perspective. You will gain a critical foundation in gender theory and media studies, considering issues such as the representation of women in news media, constructions of gender and sexuality in advertising, and the influence of global capitalism on contemporary media forms. In dedicated workshops you will learn how to critically analyse media texts including newspapers, advertising, television and film. We will study debates over the democratising potential of online media, using case studies such as the Everyday Sexism Project to think through some of the ways social media might be used as a tool of social change. Invited guest speakers – including journalists, film-makers and activists – will give you insight on how to develop a career in the media. 20

Course description

We will investigate the social, cultural and economic influences that affected his writing, and how his plays made use of the performance conditions of the Globe Theatre. In our second week, we focus on Shakespeare in the twenty-first century and the ways in which this early modern playwright has become a global cultural phenomenon. We will consider the extent to which Shakespeare is a universalising force across cultures, and how our current understanding of his work contrasts with the original contexts for its production.
