STUDYING ART & DESIGN

IN THE UK

Those who choose to study Art & Design in the UK will be immersed in one of the richest cultural heritages in the world. They will also be following in the footsteps of some of the most renowned and progressive names in advertising, design and fashion, including Stella McCartney, Vivienne Westwood, Jimmy Choo and Apple’s Chief Design Officer, Jonathan Ive. A world-leader in creative innovation Historically, the UK has been responsible for many world-leading innovations that have reshaped the creative industries. These include introducing the first moving colour pictures, the first Teletext service, and more recently, being home to the first newspaper brand — The Independent — to fully integrate augmented reality into daily editorial content. Inspirational cities with thriving arts scenes Whilst London is undeniably one of the most exciting and inspiring cities in the world for a student of Art & Design to base themselves in, there are many other places in the UK which have also become known for their arts scene on an international level, including Manchester, Glasgow, Leeds and Bristol. All of these vibrant university cities have welcomed our Art & Design alumni.

Outstanding arts-focused universities The UK is home to a wealth of excellent universities, including many who regularly rank in the Top 20 for Art & Design globally. In 2018, four of the QS Top Universities for Art & Design were located in the UK. Within the field of Art & Design there are many specialisms, and many UK universities are particularly highly regarded in a particular field. Kingston University, for example, was ranked 2nd in the world in the Times Higher Education best undergraduate fashion schools category and 2nd for fashion and textiles in the Guardian’s 2018 University Guide.

THE KINGS

ART &

DESIGN FOUNDATION

Most students who intend to take an Art & Design degree in the UK are required to do a Foundation year before starting university. One of the primary aims of this is to encourage students to explore their creative abilities, and to establish which areas of Art & Design most interest them. The Foundation also provides an excellent basis for the preparation of a portfolio on which applicants are assessed for university entry. For international students, the Kings Art Foundation has the additional benefit of helping improve language skills and adapt to UK study in preparation for university.

ART AND DESIGN IN THE UK

“ When I first started the course, I had no idea of what university I might go to in the coming year. I did not even know about what specific degree I was going to take in university. My Art teacher Kate had assisted me to select my potential pathway through identifying my strengths and weaknesses from my visual work. During the first term, I was told that my style of works have many similarities with illustration, since then I began to narrow down my development from various Art & Design areas to illustration. ” Pak Fai Chui

OUR PROGRAMMES

“ As there are very few students, the teachers can really focus on each individual person. Because I can call the teachers by their first names everything feels very personal here — it kind of feels like a big family home. I’m looking forward to future projects and what I can make and focus on that’s relevant to my pathway — I’m interested in games design so I would like to make more illustrations and digital work, which would be relevant for my future. ” Annabelle Greenaway

ART AND DESIGN AT KINGS

“ Through my Foundation course, I have learned to present to an audience, which has given me the confidence and improved the language I needed to present work critically however, my Japanese school did not have such a great opportunity. Studying here with so many different people from different cultures has definitely improved my potential, not just the way I speak but also the way I think. Moreover, I am enjoying the freedom and the experimental nature of this process.” Chiemi Nobata

The portfolio should show the range of work students have done in the last two years, either in classes or in their own time. We advise them to show work done in a variety of media and materials, and they should also include: à A ny approaches to drawing, such as experimental drawing, quick planning sketches and direct observational drawing. à A ny work relevant to the specialist area(s) they are considering (for example fashion or fine art). à A ny museum studies or work inspired by other artists, designers or craftspeople. à Some developmental work — not just finished pieces — showing how they explore a subject or theme and experiment with ideas visually. “ My lecturers and professors are very friendly. They know a lot about animation. They have been in the industry and they know about a lot of things. My year at Kings helped me in a lot of ways. It helped me with academic things like when I had to apply to university and the interviews and portfolio itself. I built up a very strong portfolio at Kings. It was amazing — I got to practise life drawing, and now I’ve got more experience in this because of Kings. Going to Kings for a year and getting used to the British culture and the accents also meant it wasn’t that shocking when I came to university because I already got that year as a base. A-LEVEL

ART AND

DESIGN

A-levels are widely regarded as the ‘Gold Standard’ qualification for top universities in Britain, and the rest of the world. They are suitable for the most able students intent on the most competitive degrees, and generally require the in-depth study of three different subjects over two academic years. Art & Design A-level students are required to have either completed a GCSE in the subject, or taken Kings Art & Design Preparation Programme. Locations: Brighton, Bournemouth, London, Oxford Start dates: September, January Entry level: Academic: Completed 10 years of High School with documented proof of excellent grades English: IELTS 5.5 (5.0 in reading and writing) or equivalent A Skype interview may be required. An Extended course of 7 – 10 terms is available for students with lower language levels (minimum IELTS 4.0). Length: 2 Academic Years (6 terms)

Completing an A-level in Art and Design can lead to a whole host of degree courses. Taken alongside two other subjects of your choosing, it can be used to access courses such as Architecture, Art History, or even an applied Art and Design degree, although often this will still require students to do an Art Foundation course prior to beginning Year 1 (see page 14). Some students choose to take A-level Art as a way to complement very academic subjects with a more creative option, or to further an interest which they have but are perhaps not certain of pursuing at university level.

Course content A-level Art students develop investigative, analytical, experimental, practical, technical, and expressive skills, an aesthetic understanding and critical judgement. They also gain an understanding of the inter-relationships between art, craft and design, and an awareness of the contexts in which they operate as well as knowledge and understanding of art, craft and design in contemporary society and in other times and cultures. For full details of the A-level Art programme, including syllabus, see the dedicated factsheet.

Ideal for students who: zz Want to study Art and Design along two other subjects in preparation for going to one of the UK’s top universities zz Want access to a wide range of degree programmes, not necessarily with a solely art/design focus zz Are interested in Art and would like more time to establish whether an Art focused degree is the right choice

Tina Deng Completed A-levels in Art, Maths, Further Maths and Physics Now studying Architecture at the University of Edinburgh

Mira Merali Completed A-levels in Art, Politics, Russian and History Now studying Art and the History of Art at the University of Art, Norwich

Fatemah Hashemi Completed A-levels in Art,Physics,Maths and Further Maths Now studying Architecture at the University of California
