YOUR JOURNEY TO FLUENCY
MEASURING PERSONALISE YOUR PROGRESS YOUR COURSE
KINGS LONG TERM COURSES
BEING PART ENRICHING OF YOUR YOUR LEARNING COMMUNITY
MAXIMISING YOUR EXPERIENCES
Your journey to fluency Your personal journey “ On a long-term course studying English at Kings, you will go through many stages on your journey to fluency. This is not the same for everyone, but there are common features that most people experience Marc Burgess Senior teacher, Kings Oxford
Stage 1: Euphoric Stage
Stage 2: Struggle Stage
Stage 3: Homesick Stage
When you first start your course, you will feel excited about the prospect of learning new language skills, making new friends and exploring a new country. Your motivation is high, and you are very keen to make progress.
You may begin to experience some stress at the differences between your culture and the new culture you find yourself in. You may find yourself frustrated that things that were so easy in your home country take more effort and concentration when using English as a second language.
Some students go through a period of homesickness, where they miss family and friends. You may find yourself wanting to spend time with people from your own country rather than with students from other countries using English .
Our friendly team of teachers and support staff will help you to adapt to your new environment with information and guidance on all aspects of your new life. This includes cultural practices, language learning tips and lots of opportunities to meet new friends and take part in a variety of activities in your new home.
Our teachers and academic staff will help you to move through any areas of difficulty you are experiencing and encourage you on your journey to fluency. You are making progress and may have moved up to a higher-level class.
Your teachers and welfare staff will be aware that you may feel this way and will support you. It is important to realise this is just a temporary stage and keep up your motivation to study and make progress.
I stayed with a host family. She was amazing, she was really friendly with me always and helped me with everything. When I arrived I couldn’t speak one word and was using Google translator to speak to her, and she’d always support me and eat dinner with me and tell me “practise your English, practise your English!”. That was amazing. You have to make mistakes so you can correct the mistakes, and after that you improve. ”
ACHIEVE DEEP FLUENCY IN ENGLISH
“ I started in Level 1, studying colours and basic things, and now I am in Level 5. I have really good progress and I could really make a relationship with people from a different nationality and understand the culture from a different kind of country. Before I came here I said to myself, “I cannot improve my English, it’s too hard a language”, but you have to believe in yourself.
Matheus, who we met on page 11, talks about how immersion in UK life helped his personal development
GAIN CULTURAL FLUENCY IN ENGLISH
This is where you come to accept and enjoy your new life living in an English-speaking culture. Your command of English has improved a lot, you have moved up to higher level classes, you can do most things in society, and you grow in confidence.
Your language has improved greatly, you have moved up a number of class levels, and now you are working on fine-tuning areas of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. You will be aware that your time at Kings is drawing to a close, and that you are in the final precious few weeks or months with your new friends and lifestyle.
Your teachers will help you to challenge yourself and work on your core language skills, and encourage you to specialise in your own individual areas of interest. You can now travel confidently and enjoy the cultural aspects of living abroad. You may find yourself giving support and advice to new students who arrive at your school.
Your teachers will be encouraging you to think about how you can use your newly acquired English language skills in your future life, for further study perhaps at university, for your career progression, or both. You will be given opportunities to talk to our expert staff about how you can best make use of your new skills in terms of future study and career progression.
